BAGHDAD, Iraq - Iraqi forces backed by U.S. soldiers and Marines raided mosques Tuesday in the insurgent stronghold of Ramadi and detained a prominent cleric following fierce clashes that hospital officials said killed at least four people.U.S. aircraft also rocketed a mosque northwest of Ramadi on Monday after insurgents opened fire from there on U.S. Marines, the command said.
The seven mosques targeted in Ramadi are suspected of supporting insurgents through a range of activities, including harboring terrorists, storing illegal weapons caches, promoting violence and encouraging insurgent recruitment, the U.S. command said.
Sheikh Abdul-Aleim Saadi, the provincial leader of the influential Association of Muslim Scholars, was detained at Mohammed Aref Mosque, his relatives and followers said.
Angry residents accused Americans of disrespecting the sanctity of city mosques.
"This cowboy behavior cannot be accepted," said cleric Abdullah Abu Omar of the Ramadi Mosque. "The Americans seem to have lost their senses and have gone out of control."
The 1st Marine Division said the raids followed a pattern of insurgent activity in and around Ramadi mosques in recent weeks.
"The 1st Marine Division respects the religious and cultural significance represented by mosques," it said in a statement. "However, when insurgents violate the sanctity of the mosque by using the structure for military purposes, the site loses its protective status."
This is great news. Our boys should not have to fight a defensive war. Its all or nothing.
A message should be sent by Totally Annihilating a few Mosques as that is the only thing these nihilistic's understand.
The 1st Marine Division is absolutely correct, according to international law (Geneva Convention) if a religious site or civilian neighourhood is used for military opperations it loses it religious or civilian status and becomes classified as military, and thus a potential target. Furthermore, combatants using such places for military action are comitting a war crime and take on the responsibility for any casualities among the civilian population of the area. As the "insurgents" in Iraq turn their own mosques in targets, so too the "activists" in Gaza who fire rockets from civilian areas at Israel make those neighbourhoods into targets.
Do these idiots think if it were Russian or the chinese that were at war with them, They would give a rats ass whether they are "violating holy places".
If these dimwitted savages care so much about these stupid buildings then why don't they protest against the terrorists using them as a fortress.

Check the military record.No monks were killed at the monistary.Prior to the bombing the Germans escorted out all monks and 40 civilians after removeing everything of value.The Germans did not occupy the monistary untile after it was bombed.It was the 2nd Polish Corps who finaly took it from the German 1st Paratroop Division.The monistary was rebuilt in the 1960's and reconsicrated by the Pope in 1964.There is an added Polish Cross there to comemorate the Polish troops who died there.

Iraqi group threatens to kill al-Zarqawi
BAGHDAD (AP) — A group of armed, masked Iraqi men threatened Tuesday to kill Jordanian militant Abu Musab al-Zarqawi if he did not immediately leave the country, accusing him of murdering innocent Iraqis and defiling the Muslim religion.
The threats revealed the deep anger many Iraqis, including insurgent groups, feel toward foreign fighters, whom many consider as illegitimate a presence here as the 160,000 U.S. and other coalition troops.

The video marked the first time that an Iraqi group made such a public threat against al-Zarqawi.
It was issued a day after U.S.-led coalition forces, who have been targeting al-Zarqawi, launched an air strike in the restive city of Fallujah on a suspected safe house used by his followers. The attack killed 15 people, witnesses said.
In the video, three men, their faces covered with Arab headscarves, were flanked by rocket propelled grenades and an Iraqi flag. The man speaking had a clear Iraqi accent.
"We swear to Allah that we have started preparing ... to capture him and his allies or kill them and present them as gift to our people." the man said. "This is the last warning. If you don't stop, we will do to you what the coalition forces have failed to do."

I heard a news comment related to SOA's post that a source having some sort of affiliation with the Sadar thugs divulged information to coalition forces that those murdered [which also included children] was for the sole purpose of blaming the americans in the event they stormed the Mosque.
