Remember that "Tawhid" is not just "unity," as it is translated here, but the Islamic concept of the absolute unity of Allah. That in itself should be enough to convince people that these are something more than just "militants" or the vanguard of a "resistance." As I have illustrated here again and again, they want to impose a state based on Islamic law, and anyone who values human rights, and abhors the idea that the Creator desires blood and murder, should oppose them. But the general refusal to look squarely at the religious roots of this conflict makes it particularly easy for the American Left, in its opposition to the Iraq war, to see these people as plucky, if somewhat unattractive, freedom fighters. If the nature of the enemy had been acknowledged forthrightly from the beginning, it would be much harder for the Left to sustain that position.

Unfortuntaely, I see no way out for the civilized world but to continue taking casualities. The islamic world has perfected tha art of using our freedoms and our tolerance and our goodness against us. They've repeatedly abused our hospitality and our willingness to give the benefit of doubt to them.

Mosul seems to be one of the epicentres of anti-Coalition violence.
I thought it was meant to be under Kurdish control and therefore more sympathetic to the Coalition? Weren't there reports of the Kurds driving out the Arab settlers that Saddam had imposed on the area?

Yes there are those who although not blind still cannot see, they are to be found all over the world. They will employ what ever self delusion is necessary to avoid seeing reality. Of course the answer is one of having more women in power. History has shown that again and again in societies where women have social and political status comparable to men, intellectual knowledge (which leads to human rights, etc.) and technology (which leads to better standards of living) tend to become advanced.
However, Islam is not a religion which is compatible with elevated social and political standing for women, no matter how many Muslim women parrot a few verses from the Qu'ran which seem to prove their equality in Allah's eyes. Islam is at its heart and since its inception a patriarchal, misogynist religion. If women are ever to advance under Islam, the religion itself will have to be reformed in some manner.

Islam comes close to being pure evil. It kills those who don't believe in it and kills those who do. There seems to be no reason required for mass murder but the exercise of showing others that their version of islam is more powerful,(not right, just, peaceful, compassionate, wise), no just more powerful. The bigger the bomb, the more the casualties, the greater the satisfaction that allah has crowned them with success. Islam measures itself in indices of power, whether it be firepower, number of believers (voting power), how many were murdered with a single bomb, or other some measurable index of power. OBL confirms this worship of power when he talks of the strong and weak horse.
So how does one reform a religion, recognizably evil, and based on the principle of the worship of power? I have, for a long time felt, that women had the keys to the reformation of islam. I'm not so sure now. Women are offering their children to the jihad and even becoming suicide bombers. This is not the empowerment of women that was in the minds of the women's lib movement. Women and their children, like their counterpart male suicide bombers, have just become more grist to the jihad machine, ie the death cult machine.
There is one way to reform islam but it is alien to our democratic way. Kemal Ataturk in Turkey did a fair job in taming the beast of islam by virtually banning the practice of the outward manifestations of the religion. If memory serves me right, even the haj to Mecca was not allowed for Turks. Unfortunately for Turkey, its road to join the EU, has meant that the iron grip of Kemalism has had to be relaxed. Paradoxically, this has meant the rejuvenation of islam in that country. For the good of Turkey and its secular constitution, it would be better if it stayed out of the EU and continued with the vigorous application of Kemalism. Over another hundred years or so, Islam would more or less be extinct in Turkey. Then it can join the EU without any nagging doubts in any quarter.
If we take Turkey as an example, then a strong military type in the mould of Ataturk, in major muslim nations, could be the answer.

The US and coalition forces are closing in on Zarqawi now, it's just a matter of time, the UK government want him bad for Bigley, and it wouldn't harm Blairs chances of re-election to string the poisonous coward up before the country.
