The law finally catches up with Jihad Jack Thomas, about whom I wrote almost two years ago. From The Age, with thanks to Nicolei:
A man has appeared in the Melbourne Magistrate's Court this afternoon charged with assisting the al-Qaeda terrorist group. Joseph Terrence Thomas, 31, also known as "Jihad Jack", is charged with two new counter terrorism offences - receiving funds from a terrorist organisation and providing support for a terrorist organisation. It is the first time the offences have been applied in Australia since new counter terrorism laws were introduced in 2002, the AFP said in a statement today.
Thomas kept his head bowed throughout the short appearance. Defence counsel Lex Lasry QC said he would not be making a bail application until he received more information and instructions from his client.
Magistrate Lisa Hannan remanded Thomas until Wednesday, when the court expects his bail application to be heard.
Australian Federal Police (AFP) earlier raided Thomas' home in Werribee, in Melbourne's south-west, seizing documents and computer equipment.
The former taxi driver and chef returned to Australia in June after being held in Pakistan for six months on suspicion of having terrorist connections after the country's interior ministry decided not to charge him.
Thomas was today charged with receiving funds from the terrorist organisation al-Qaeda in Karachi, Pakistan and elsewhere between November 2002 and January 2003.
A second charge states that between July 2002 and January 2003, at Karachi, he provided support or resources to al-Qaeda which would help the organisation to engage in preparing, planning or assisting in a terrorist act.
The real answer since they keep telling us it is all about the poor? That means public schools for them?

GIVE SCHOOLGIRLS CONTRACEPTIVE INJECTIONS
Nov 16 2004
By Bob Roberts, Deputy Political Editor
SCHOOLGIRLS should be given contraceptive injections to cut teenage pregnancies, Margaret Hodge said yesterday.
The Minister for Children said new policies were needed to reduce the number of under-18s having babies.
And the idea of the injections was "really interesting" to the Government. She said: "You don't want them to have babies at that age. You do want children to be put off having sex at such a young age. You do want them to have appropriate contraceptives."
Injections would be targeted at girls with one child already.
But her idea caused fury. Norman Wells, of Family Education Trust, said: "No matter how much sex education they give, no matter how many contraceptives they make available, if children are having under-age sex and multiple partners they are vulnerable."
Paul Burstow, Liberal Democrat health spokesman, said: "Young people should be given the information and the support they need to discuss sex and relationships and to understand the dangers they face."
COULD WE EVEN THINK SUCH A THING?? I CAN!!

France Tries to Defend Attack on Ivory Coast
NewsMax.com Wires
Friday, Nov. 12, 2004
ABIDJAN, Ivory Coast – France defended itself Friday against accusations by Ivory Coast authorities and some Western evacuees that it used excessive force in protecting foreigners against violent mobs during five days of upheaval in its former West African colony.
Ivorian government forces withdrew from rebel positions Friday, easing fears of a resumption of all-out civil war, as France and other countries continued to fly out thousands of foreigners. The head of France's armed forces, Gen. Henri Bentegeat, acknowledged for the first time Friday that his soldiers opened fire to hold back what he called a "pack of looters, rapists and uncontrollable or manipulated people" attacking foreigners in Abidjan.
But he told Europe-1 radio the soldiers did "the absolute minimum" in self-defense and claimed gunmen in the crowds killed "a very large number" of people.
At least three European women were raped during the rioting, French community representative Catherine Rechenmann told France-Inter radio Thursday.
'France Has Used Extreme Violence'
National Reconciliation Minister Dano Djedje reacted angrily to Bentegeat's comments. "France has used extreme violence against unarmed demonstrators ... and they should take responsibility for it," he told The Associated Press.
Presidential spokesman Desire Tagro claimed Friday that 62 loyalists died in the turmoil unleashed Nov. 6 by a deadly Ivory Coast air strike on French peacekeepers in the rebel-held north. The attack killed nine peacekeepers and an American aid worker.
France responded by wiping out the country's air force, after which loyalist youths in the south took to the streets of Abidjan and other cities armed with machetes, iron bars and clubs. France and other nations began flying out foreigners Wednesday.
By midday Friday, 2,192 of the 14,000 French citizens here had left the country along with scores from Spain, Germany, the United States and other countries, French officials said. Some 200-300 Britons were also expected to leave Friday after the British military joined the evacuation effort.
President Laurent Gbagbo's office issued a statement Friday urging foreigners to stay and saying it was taking steps to assure their safety.
Some evacuees echoed the Ivory Coast government's complaints of excessive force. An American restaurant worker and other witnesses said French helicopters fired on demonstrators in the commercial capital, Abidjan.
"Man, we heard of a lot of Ivorian friends dying," the worker said, speaking on condition of anonymity.
Hospital officials and AP journalists have confirmed 27 deaths and more than 1,000 injured in the past week, but that count likely is a partial one.
An Ivorian journalist, Antoine Masse, was among those killed during a confrontation Sunday involving the Ivorian army, demonstrators and French forces west of Abidjan, according to Reporters Without Borders.
Ivory Coast's military, launching an inquiry Friday into the air strike that sparked the violence, said it hoped to "establish the truth" of who was to blame. Ivorian officials have alternated between denying responsibility for the attack and saying it was a mistake.
Bentegeat said he was "certain" the attack was intentional. Planes had been circling for two days, he said. "There was no error possible."
An uneasy calm returned to the country Thursday. U.N. peacekeepers said government troops had withdrawn beyond the zone separating the government-held south and rebel-held north, U.N. spokesman Fred Eckhard said in New York. In Abidjan, shops reopened and traffic returned to the streets.

United Nations Tells Morocco to Decriminalize Abortion
GENEVA, November 10, 2004 (LifeSiteNews.com) - The United Nations Human Rights Committee (UNHRC) concluded a review on Morocco's compliance with the International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights (ICCPR), demanding that the mostly-Muslim nation "liberalize" its abortion laws. The UN committee composed of 18 UN human rights "experts" issued its recommendation on November 5.
The UNHRC report says, "The Committee notes with concern that abortion remains a penal infringement in Moroccan law except when used to save the life of the mother." The committee recommends Morocco "should ensure that women are not obliged to carry their pregnancies to term when that is incompatible with the obligations rising from the Covenant (articles 6 and 7) and to liberalize the provisions relative to the interruption of pregnancy."

American Legion Blasts DoD Boy Scouts Ruling
The leader of the nation's largest military veterans organization today admonished the Pentagon and America's leaders to stand firm against another move by the ACLU against the Boy Scouts of America, which, it claimed, "engage[s] in religious discrimination."
In a strongly worded letter to Defense Secretary Donald Rumsfeld, American Legion National Commander Thomas P. Cadmus responded to news that the Pentagon has agreed to warn military bases worldwide that they should not directly sponsor Boy Scout troops, partially resolving claims that the government has improperly supported a group that requires members to believe in God.
"The idea that sponsorship of Scouting by American military units is 'unconstitutional' goes beyond the absurd, even well past the point of stupidity," Cadmus wrote. "How is it the government can fund chapels on military bases, and Chaplains in the military, but not accommodate Scouting? Why is it that the rank of Eagle Scout is an attribute highly sought in candidates for military academies, but will soon become unwelcome on military bases? How is it the Congress can sanction Scouting by issuing them a federal charter, but the courts can declare them 'outlaws'?"
The settlement apparently came in a 1999 lawsuit filed by the American Civil Liberties Union of Illinois, which noted that American military units have sponsored hundreds of Boy Scout units.
"Is there no one in Washington, D.C., at the highest levels of government that will stand up for Scouts, for Scouting and support this movement that has long been an institution of highest reputation in America?" Cadmus asked. "Where's the President? Where's his Cabinet? Where's the Congress? What are the courts doing? Where is the outrage?
"For certain, outrage over this and other actions taken against the Boy Scouts of America in recent times is, today, reverberating through the ranks of The American Legion," Cadmus said. "On behalf of the 2.7 million men and women of the Legion, I am asking you to hold the line of assault on the Scouts. Stand up to the ACLU. Find a way to give those who serve our nation the chance to serve their children. Do what is necessary to blend the private organization that Scouting is with the military organization of our Republic. It has been done freely and openly for almost 100 years – That's a precedent that cannot be disregarded."
The American Legion is one of the nation's largest sponsors of Scouting units across the nation. The December issue of The American Legion Magazine features an article that describes the assault on Scouting entitled "On my honor, I must fight."

Non-Christian AFA cadets feel religious pressure, board told
By Mike Soraghan
Denver Post Staff Writer
Wednesday, November 17, 2004 -
Washington - The Air Force Academy, criticized last year for inattention to sexual assaults, now is troubled by cadets who are overzealous about religion, the academy superintendent said Tuesday.
Non-Christian cadets at the school north of Colorado Springs have reported feeling pressured by their Christian peers, Lt. Gen. John W. Rosa Jr. told the school's Board of Visitors at a meeting here.
"Some students had a feeling that 'If I'm not a Christian, I feel like I'm having Christianity crammed down my throat,"' Rosa said.
In surveys done in August, more than 30 percent of non- Christian students said Christian cadets are given preferential treatment, while less than 10 percent of Christian students felt that way. Only a little more than half of non- Christian students reported they "have not felt pressure to be involved in religion" at the academy.
For example, Rosa said that when the film "The Passion of the Christ" was in theaters, some cadets e-mailed their squadrons to suggest seeing it together. The film, a graphic depiction of Jesus' death, was particularly popular among evangelical Christians.
"People felt they were being coerced," Rosa said.
Many cadets bring their family's religious values to the academy with them, Rosa said, and don't realize they might be crossing a line when they talk about religion with others. He said the academy intends to address the problem by educating cadets about tolerance.
"It's not mean-spirited. It's all they know," Rosa said. "We must ensure a climate free of discrimination and marginalization."
Tuesday's meeting also showed the sexual assault scandal still weighs on the school. The scandal led to the ouster of Rosa's predecessor and three other top officers amid several investigations.
The survey found that the number of students who had heard racial or sexually harassing jokes had dropped from 90 percent to 56 percent. While touting the drop, Rosa said the figure is far too high.
"When I got there, we hadn't started training for our marathon," Rosa said. "Now we've finished training. I believe we're in our second mile, but we have a long way to go."
The 15-member visitors board oversees the military academy. In the past, The Denver Post reported last year, it had failed to aggressively pursue sexual misconduct at the academy and some of its members attended meetings only sporadically.
On Tuesday, most if not all members attended.
In early 2003, the school was rocked by allegations of sexual assault against female cadets and former cadets. More than 65 came forward, many saying their allegations were met with indifference, hostility and even retaliation.
The final investigation is still being finished by the Department of Defense Inspector General, an internal watchdog. The report is expected to criticize academy leaders by name for their roles.
In a closed session, board members got a briefing on the findings but were forbidden to discuss them publicly.
The report, a year overdue, now is expected to be out in December. Officials said the investigation is largely complete, but the IG staff is dealing with responses from the officers criticized in the report.

As for the French "over-reacting" in the Ivory Coast, these were the guys who sent frogmen out to blow up a small ship belonging to Green Peace, the Rainbow Warrior, which was attempting to halt French nuclear testing near some atoll in the South Pacific back in the 60s. And yes, I think Chiraqui was in the cabinet then too.
