(CNN) -- The director of CARE in Iraq, who was kidnapped last month, may have been executed, a British official with knowledge of the abduction said Tuesday.The Foreign Office official said: "There is a video. ... We believe it is probably genuine, but we cannot be certain at this time."
Officials are in close contact with the family of Margaret Hassan and will release a statement in a few hours when they know what has actually happened to her, the office said.
It was not confirming or denying her death at this point.
In a statement issued through the UK Foreign and Commonwealth Office, Hassan's family said: "Our hearts are broken. We have kept hoping for as long as we could, but we now have to accept that Margaret has probably gone and at last her suffering has ended."
Hassan, who was born in Ireland and had lived in Iraq for 30 years, was kidnapped on October 19 by a group that did not identify itself.
The group said November 2 that it would turn Hassan over to an al Qaeda-affiliated group if the British government did not pull its troops out of Iraq within 48 hours, the Arab TV network Al-Jazeera said at the time.
CARE International suspended its operations in Iraq the day after Hassan was kidnapped in Baghdad.

OK, This is OT but disturbing to me, and I want to find out if this is happening to others:
We use several IMs- ICQ, YIM, AIM. It began on ICQ but it is now starting to happen on AIM- people of Saudi or Egyptian extraction (or should I say, direct from those countries), keep contacting my wife. So far it has not happened on mine...
I am sure many people would pass this off as overreacting, but we've both been on these IMs for over 3 years and All of this began in the last 12 months (I had two such contacts before joining my wife in Canada). There have been at least a dozen such contacts. All of these guys are in their early 20s according to their profiles. One of them even went so far as to say 'If you will marry me I will send you a plane ticket.'
Is there anyone else getting these kind of contacts?

You have to appreciate the fine art of double standards to understand that. The media are full of the story about the Iraqi jihadist but hardly a word about the torture and execution of the woman whose body was found the other day.
I don’t blame the Marine for the shooting, that was the second time they had to clear that building. The guys in the field know that all the wounded Islamic insurgents, when given the chance will shoot at them again. So the only way to cope is to kill everyone that has shot at you. If you don’t, he may be the one that kills you tomorrow. Maybe we should go back to the time when no cameras where permitted in battle? Our guys have enough to worry about in the war, lets not make their job even harder. This is war, not a police force.
We need to give the killers of Margaret Hassan the martyrdom that Mohammadanism requires of them and likewise to all Islamic insurgents.
Then we should turn Osama’s rhetoric around and announce that we are not fighting Islam, we are fighting its foreign policies.

Mr. President, here we go again, here we go again.
Rushing to give aid and comfort to the enemy.
Pushing and pulling and shoving and leaping over one another to assign blame and point the finger at America the Terrible.
Lining up in long lines at the microphones to offer apologies to those poor, pitiful Iraqi prisoners.
Of course, I do not condone all the things that went on in that prison, but I for one, Mr. President, refuse to join in this national Act of Contrition over it.
Those who are wringing their hands and shouting so loudly for “heads to roll” over this seem to have conveniently overlooked the fact that someone’s head HAS rolled - that of another innocent American brutally murdered by terrorists.
Why is it? Why is it that there’s more indignation over a photo of a prisoner with underwear on his head than over the video of a young American with no head at all?
Why is it that some in this country still don’t get that we are at war? A war against terrorists who are plotting to kill us every day. Terrorists who will murder Americans at any time any place any chance they get.
And yet here we are, America on its knees, in front of our enemy, begging for their forgiveness over the mistreatment of prisoners.
Showing the enemy and the world once again how easily America can get sidetracked and how easily America can turn against it self.
Yes, some of our soldiers went too far with their interrogation tactics and clearly were not properly trained to handle such duty.
But the way to deal with this is with swift and sure punishment, and immediate and better training.
There also needs to be more careful screening of who it is we put in these kinds of sensitive situations.
And no one wants to hear this, Mr. President and I’m reluctant to say it. But there should also be some serious questioning of having male and female soldiers serving side by side in these kinds of military missions.
But instead, I worry that the HWA - the Hand-Wringers of America - will add to their membership and continue to bash our country ad nauseam. And in doing so, hand over more innocent Americans to the enemy on a silver platter.
So I stand with Senator Inhofe of Oklahoma, who stated that he’s “more outraged by the outrage” than by the treatment of those prisoners.
More outraged by the outrage. It’s a good way of putting it. That’s exactly how this Senator from Georgia feels.

This is addressed to those who feel sympathy for the headhunters. It is said that Mrs. Hassan was a convert to Islam. It did not save her life to be one of them did it? She gave 30 years of her life in service to these people and this is her reward. I wonder if there is any humanity in these people ( and I use the word people lightly).

To kill a defenceless woman, practically an Iraqi, who had lived there for thirty years helping Iraqis, who was against the war in the first place... You would think that these guys could perhaps liberate her to gain PR points. But then you see it's not the case and you're shocked, you say, what a horrible, pointless murder... Then you realize, of course, that that's exactly what they are after. They want to kill women, children, babies, whatever, exactly to prove that they have no limits, that they will instill fear and stop at no moral boundaries to do so.
But in the end, savage and stupid acts like this only will isolate them even more, finishing with any support they could have. In fact, it should be quite clear now that the "insurgent" movement is not an insurgency at all, but a group of cold-blooded murderers, perhaps financed from outside (Iran? Gary, I think you'll find it's been happening for a lot longer than 12 months, and not just with people from Egypt and Saudi. Every woman I know who uses chat programs has been bombarded with marriage proposals from the muslim world, particularly Algeria, Morocco, Turkey, and Egypt. Some are probably genuine in their desire to escape those hellholes and find better lives, but others probably have less savoury motives.

You betcha. Even though the dictionary gives definitions of "to execute" in both legal and extra-legal senses, most people tend to think of "execute" as an action within the legal context. Murder, on the other hand, is defined only in the extra-legal sense, and is the more appropriate term to use.
The media almost always use the term "execute" instead of "murder," and this trivializes the true and illegal nature of the disgusting act.

1) Can someone tell me which, if any, Islamic countries are signatories to the Geneva Convention?
2) I have heard that while "holy places," among certain others, are legally protected from deliberate, targeted destruction during warfare, they lose this exemption if they are used for purposes of war-things like hiding places for snipers, weapons storage, etc.
Is this true?
