Happy Eid! Why would they think to do this on an Islamic holy day? Perhaps because they considered what they were doing to be an act of religious devotion? Did they by this action mean to "mar" Eid, or rather to observe it? From AFP, with thanks to Twostellas:
SRINAGAR, India - Suspected rebels in Indian Kashmir killed three policemen on the eve of Eid, Islam’s holiest festival, as they guarded a Hindu village that witnessed a massacre in 2003, police said on Sunday. The militants stormed the police post late Saturday in Nadimarg, 80 kilometers (50 miles) south of Srinagar, summer capital of India’s only Muslim majority state where a revolt against New Delhi’s rule has raged since 1989.
“The area has been sealed off and searches launched to arrest the militants,” a police spokesman told AFP.
The police post was set up to protect the few Hindu families remaining in Nadimarg where 24 people, including women and children, were killed in March 2003 by suspected militants clad in Indian army uniforms.
The villagers, known as Kashmiri Pandits, were dragged from their homes and shot to death.
The raid on the police post occurred on the eve of Eid-ul-Fitr which marks the end of fasting month of Ramadan....
More than 40,000 people thronged Kashmir’s main mosque in Srinagar Sunday to pray for peace. Eid is being marked Sunday in the Himalayan region of Kashmir while Muslims elsewhere in India will celebrate the festival Monday....
The nuclear-armed neighbours, which have fought two of their three wars over the Himalayan region, hold it in part but claim it in full. India accuses Pakistan of arming the Islamic groups, a charge Islamabad denies....
Kashmiri Pandits, residents of the region for centuries, have often been targeted by suspected Muslim rebels, causing thousands to flee. The Jammu and Kashmir government has been seeking to persuade them to return to their homes.
At least 40,000 people have died in separatist-related violence since 1989. Separatist groups say the death toll is at least double that number.
the eve of Eid, Islam’s holiest festival....
I am so sick of hearing how everything islamic is 'holy'...its either their "45th holiest site" or the "321st holiest day of the year for muslims" its ridiculous. Maybe this is a small but silly way that muslims have of claiming the earth as their own....make every inch of soil a "holiest site of islam" and make every holiday "holier" than all the others.
As for the killing on Eid....just a fitting way to end the bloody month of bombadan. On a brighter note I will no longer have to watch muslims walking around during daylight belching and looking ill from all the gorging and pigging out that happened before the sun rose.

U.S. officials estimated more than 1,200 insurgents were killed in the week-long fighting.
No Islam, No S**t
Remember when we only had news of the faithful making the Hadj to Mecca getting killed in stampedes?
Oh, for the good old days.
A local Muslim group held a buffet at a large
building and boasted that they collected 5000 lbs of food for the Food-Bank in my City.
This sounds very generous but it's the first time it occured and it looks like a ruse to deflect the attention to Islam for all the beheadings and the Theo Van Gogh murder.
The usual rant about Ramadan being a month of charity and peace was sold to the media, but while some Islamic org.'s are claiming to have over 100 years of Muslims living in Canada,I really question why it took until now for them to care about the needy and homeless.
This means they stayed mute on Aboriginal hadships, the Chinese immigrant slave labour issue, the Rights struggle for Blacks, the Nazi threat to the West( haven't seen any Muslim vet's in parades),the growing homeless problem in my City, and the high jail population for Muslims that are portrayed as peaceful and law-abiding.
The media was careful to avoid showing how the females were segregated from the men and how
most females were expected to dress modestly and wear hijabs. Although this effort will feed the need for longer then the period if nothing was donated,Muslims should strive to care all year round and do acts of charity in private.
This public display of giving stops be charity when the givers boast of the act, many groups raise funds but most aren't the faith-based that
do acts of kindness without expecting something back.
Islamic leaders are only attempting to make Muslims appear in a better light and fool the masses that Peace and Charity is at the root of Islam and Allah.
I don't talk about my work for charity or acts of giving to the needy, and I'm expected to do it all the time and not for 1/12th of the year to gain favour with Allah.
yes, Ala-Sux, as I noted in other postings, the Muslim community in Toronto, except for the African Muslims, has had little to say about Darfur. One small contingent participated in the rally a week ago Sunday on Nathan Philips Square. The bulk of support came from Jewish, Christian, Hindu and other organizations.
Yes, but: where the hell was the tv coverage for this? I heard not one word about it.
