AMMAN, Jordan (Reuters) - The family of Sheikh Omar Jummah had no idea he was in Iraq until a midnight caller told them he had died fighting alongside al Qaeda ally Abu Musab al-Zarqawi.Omar, 35, a Jordanian like Zarqawi, fought for a year with other Islamic militants battling to expel U.S.-led forces from Iraq. But he kept his family in the dark.
"He told us he was leaving for Saudi Arabia to take up a teaching job," said his 64-year-old father Youssef Jummah.
Jummah recalled that his son was deeply religious and had memorized the Koran by the age of 13. But no one in his family expected that his piety would drive him to militancy.
The almost universal failure to expect or at least suspect just that is the jihadists' best hope to prevail against their non-Muslim foes.

Hi. Are you nuts?
Forgive me for being so blunt, but your reaction to our re-election of President Bush has been so outrageous that I’m wondering if you have quite literally lost your minds.
One of Britain’s largest newspapers ran a headline asking “How Can 59 Million Americans Be So Dumb?” and commentators in France all seemed to use the same word – bizarre – to explain the election’s outcome to their readers.
In Germany the editors of Die Tageszeitung responded to our vote by writing that “Bush belongs at a war tribunal – not in the White House.” And on a London radio talk show last week one Jeremy Hardy described our President and those of us who voted for him as “stupid, crazy, ignorant, bellicose Christian fundamentalists.”
Of course, you are entitled to whatever views about us that you care to hold. (And lucky for you we Americans aren’t like so many of the Muslims on your own continent; as the late Dutch filmmaker Theo van Gogh just discovered, make one nasty crack about them and you’re likely to get six bullets pumped into your head and a knife plunged into your chest.)
But before you write us off as just a bunch of sweaty, hairy-chested, Bible-thumping morons who are more likely to break their fast by dipping a Krispy Kreme into a diet cola than a biscotti into an espresso – and who inexplicably have won more Nobel prizes than all other countries combined, host 25 or 30 of the world’s finest universities and five or six of the world’s best symphonies, produce wines that win prizes at your own tasting competitions, have built the world’s most vibrant economy, are the world’s only military superpower and, so to speak in our spare time, have landed on the moon and sent our robots to Mars – may I suggest you stop frothing at the mouth long enough to consider just what are these ideas we hold that you find so silly and repugnant?
We believe that church and state should be separate, but that religion should remain at the center of life. We are a Judeo-Christian culture, which means we consider those ten things on a tablet to be commandments, not suggestions.
We believe that individuals are more important than groups, that families are more important than governments, that children should be raised by their parents rather than by the State, and that marriage should take place only between a man and a woman.
We believe that rights must be balanced by responsibilities, that personal freedom is a privilege we must be careful not to abuse, and that the rule of law cannot be set aside when it becomes inconvenient.
We believe in economic liberty, and in the right of purposeful and industrious entrepreneurs to run their businesses – and thus create jobs – with a minimum of government interference.
We recognize that other people see things differently, and we are tolerant of their views. But we believe that our country is worth defending, and if anyone decides that killing us is an okay thing to do we will go after them with everything we’ve got.
If these beliefs seem strange to you, they shouldn’t. For these are precisely the beliefs that powered Western Europe – you – from the Middle Ages into the Renaissance, on to the Enlightenment, and forward into the modern world. They are the beliefs that made Europe itself the glory of Western Civilization and – not coincidentally – ignited the greatest outpouring of art, literature, music and scientific discovery the world has ever known including Michelangelo, Leonardo da Vinci, Shakespeare, Bach, Issac Newton and Descartes.
Europe Is Dying
It is your abandonment of these beliefs that has created the gap between Europe and the United States. You have ceased to be a Judeo-Christian culture, and have become instead a secular culture. And a secular culture quickly goes from being “un-religious” to anti-religious. Indeed, your hostility to the basic concepts of Judaism and Christianity has literally been written into your new European Union constitution, despite the Pope’s heroic efforts to the contrary.
Your rate of marriage is at an all-time low, and the number of abortions in Europe is at an all-time high. Indeed, your birth rates are so far below replacement levels that in 30 years or so there will be 70 million fewer Europeans alive than are alive today. Europe is literally dying. And of the children you do manage to produce, all too few will be raised in stable, two-parent households.
Your economy is stagnant because your government regulators make it just about impossible for your entrepreneurs to succeed – except by fleeing to the United States, where we welcome them and celebrate their success.
And your armed forces are a joke. With the notable exception of Great Britain, you no longer have the military strength to defend yourselves. Alas, you no longer have the will to defend yourselves.
What worries me even more than all this is your willful blindness. You refuse to see that it is you, not we Americans, who have abandoned Western Civilization. It’s worrisome because, to tell you the truth, we need each other. Western Civilization today is under siege, from radical Islam on the outside and from our own selfish hedonism within. It’s going to take all of our effort, our talent, our creativity and, above all, our will to pull through.
So take a good, hard look at yourselves and see what your own future will be if you don’t change course. And please, stop sneering at America long enough to understand it. After all, Western Civilization was your gift to us, and you ought to be proud of what we Americans have made of it.

Fallujah Marine in Trouble for Pulling a Kerry
The television press was awash Monday night with video of a U.S. Marine entering a Fallujah terrorist nest filled with dead snipers who, moments earlier, had been shooting at his unit.
Upon discovering that one of the snipers is still breathing, the Marine shouts a warning to his buddies, the screen goes dark and a gunshot is heard - suggesting that the Marine finished off the wounded terrorist. Iraq war critics are already salivating at the prospects of another Abu Ghraib-like military fiasco.
Not so fast, say the folks at FreeRepublic.com, who point out that John Kerry got a Silver Star with Combat V [for valor] for committing the same sort of "atrocity."
In fact, the February 1969 incident was considered by Kerry supporters to be his finest hour.
Patrolling the Bay Hap River, Kerry and his crew discovered they were about to be ambushed by a Viet Cong soldier who had just popped up at the shoreline with a loaded rocket launcher in his hands. With the VC about to fire, Kerry crew mate Thomas Bellodeau shot and wounded the attacker, saving the entire boat.
Only then did Kerry leap to the shore to chase the wounded enemy down - finishing him off behind a hootch.
When critics suggested that Kerry's actions that day were something less than heroic, they were hooted down by the press.
Certainly the as-yet-unnamed Marine in Fallujah deserves, if not the Silver Star, the same slack the press cut Kerry.

How did this get there?
My big question on all these video tapes of the killings in Iraq is "Why are the journalists and camera opperators allowed to stand by and do nothing while they film the war-crimes",are members of the media above the laws for human rights violations,these are the same people that whine about being injured in war-zones and depend on Marines to risk their lives to get them to a secured military post.
Please don't try to tell me that the Muslim working the camera in the beheading video's is an objective observer and only recording a new worthy event as a responsibility to bring the public the truth about the Iraq war.
I only hope that the film crew also appear at the Military trial for failing to stop the atrocities just as John Kerry did in Vietnam when
he waited until he was back home and could exploit
the human tragedy for his gains.
The "Good Semaritan" law puts part of the onus for a crime on the witness that fails to report or stop the crime.

Just watched Submission by Van Gogh on ifilm.com. It was powerful but much tamer than I expected. Van Gogh was killed for so little a slight to Islam? Muslims must have a wobbly faith indeed if their psyches are disturbed by so little.

Russia’s Top Prosecutor Suggests Taking Hostages to Fight Terror

Russia’s Prosecutor General Vladimir Ustinov has proposed taking hostages as a possible measure to fight terrorism.
“Detaining terrorists’ relatives during a terror attack would certainly help us save people,” Ustinov told the State Duma, speaking at a conference of law enforcement officials and law makers on the war on terror, the Russian Information Agency Novosti reported.
In his address, he urged parliament to consider the issue as they revise the law on terrorism.
In response, Duma speaker Boris Gryzlov said Russia’s parliament is prepared to consider an amendment to the existing law on terrorism to allow the possibility of federal forces taking hostages in the case of a terror attack.
At this point, Gryzlov noted, laws stipulate that terrorists’ relatives can be used for the purpose of negotiation, but their participation is voluntary. The amendment proposed by Ustinov would allow the federal forces to confine the relatives of terrorists by force if necessary.
FSB head Nikolai Patrushev, for his part, applauded suggestions to amend the current law on terrorism to give law enforcement authorities greater power in apprehending terrorists, but did not comment on Ustinov’s proposal in particular.
Allegations have appeared in the past that federal forces took as many as 40 people hostage during the Beslan school siege. All of them were reported to be relatives of Chechen separatist leader Aslan Maskhadov.
In another case earlier in the year, several other relatives were reportedly taken hostage and forced to spend days on their knees

Six Russians Killed in Sinai Taba Hilton Blasts — Arab Media

At least two Russians were killed in Thursday night’s Taba Hilton blast on the Sinai Peninsula that claimed the lives of some 34 people vacationing on the Red Sea resort. One of the bodies was identified as Anna Akhmatova, the identity of the second body has yet to be determined.
Nine Russians are said to be missing after the blasts. Unconfirmed reports citing Arab media say that four more Russian bodies have been discovered in the hotel wreckage left by a truck bomb that ripped through the lobby and destroyed an entire wing of the hotel.
Russian officials did not comment on reports of four new bodies being discovered, but confirmed that so far one Russian by the name of Anna Akhmatova was killed in the hotel, and that officials were checking eyewitness accounts of a second Russian body, the Newsru.com news site reported.
They do not rule out that the nine missing Russians may also be dead.
Gazeta.ru reported the news of four more identified bodies on Sunday evening, citing the Arab online newspaper Al Bawaba.
The Russian Embassy in Cairo is continuing to search for the missing Russians, Newsru.com quoted an embassy representative as saying. Egyptian police report, meanwhile, that search and rescue efforts are over.
Up to 15 Russians were injured in last week’s blasts, and three remain in Egyptian hospitals, undergoing treatment. Hundreds of Russian nationals were said to be vacationing at the resort, although exact figures differed.
Israeli law enforcement authorities say that Al Qaeda was behind the series of blasts that hit a number of Red Sea resort towns on Egypt’s Sinai Peninsula. Several Bedouins have been arrested on suspicion of being involved, one for selling explosives that brought down part of the Taba Hilton, Lenta.ru reported.
The Egyptian side is more skeptical about the Al Qaeda version, focusing instead on a group of Egyptian militants they say had help from the outside, The Guardian reported.

The media attacks on our marine in Fallujah are more ways to get our soldiers killed. This is a guest blog by a former marine and Navy Seal, Matthew Heidt, whose blog can be found here.
Security Rounds
We're gonna see more on this issue in the near future. Most folks who've served in combat are taking a much more objective view of how things are changing w/re to the Law of Land Warfare than those who have not.
The shots fired at the "unarmed" terrorist in that mosque in Fallujah are called "security rounds." Its a safety issue pure and simple. After assaulting through a target, put a security round in everybody's head. Sorry al-Reuters, there's no paddy wagon rolling around Fallujah picking up "prisoners" and offering them a hot cup a joe, falafel, and a blanket. There's no time to dick around in the target, you clear the space, dump the chumps, and moveon.org. Are Corpsman expected to treat wounded terrorists?
Negative. Hey libs, worried about the defense budget? Well, it would be waste, fraud, and abuse for a Corpsman to spend one man minute or a battle dressing on a terrorist, its much cheaper to just spend the $.02 on a 5.56mm FMJ.

UPDATE: Let me be very clear about this issue. I have looked around the web, and many people get this concept, but there are some stragglers. Here is your situation Marine. You just took fire from unlawful combatants shooting from a religious building attempting to use the sanctuary status of their position as protection. But you're in Fallujah now, and the Marine Corps has decided that they're not playing that game this time. That was Najaf. So you set the mosque on fire and you hose down the terrorists with small arms, launch some AT-4s (Rockets), some 40MM grenades into the building and
things quiet down. So you run over there, and find some tangos wounded and pretending to be dead. You are aware that suicide martyrdom is like really popular with these kind of idiots, and like taking some Marines with them would be really cool. So you can either risk your life and your fireteam's lives by having them cover you while you bend down and search a guy that you think is pretending to be dead for some reason.
Also, you don't know who or what is in the next room, and you're already speaking English to each other and its loud because your hearing is poor from shooting people for several days. So you know that there are many other rooms to enter, and that if anyone is still alive in those rooms, they know that Americans are in the mosque. Meanwhile (3 seconds later), you still have this terrorist that was just shooting at you from a mosque playing possum. What do you do?
You double tap his head, and you go to the next room, that's what.
What about the Geneva Conventions and all that Law of Land Warfare stuff? What about it. Without even addressing the issues at hand you first thought should be, "I'd rather be judged by 12 than carried by 6." Bear in mind that this is a perpetual mindset that in reinforced by experience on a minute by minute basis. Secondly, you are fighting an unlawful combatant in a Sanctuary which is a double No No on his part. Third, tactically you are in no position to take "prisoners" because there are more rooms to search and clear, and the behavior of said terrorist indicates that he is up to no good. No good in Fallujah is a very large place and the low end of no good and the high end of no good are fundamentally the same... Marines get hurt or die. So there is no compelling reason for you to do anything but double tap this idiot and get on with the mission.
If you are a veteran then everything I have just written is self evident, if you are not a veteran than at least try to put yourself in the situation. Remember, in Fallujah there is no yesterday, there is no tomorrow, there is only now. Right NOW. Have you ever lived in NOW for a week? It is not
easy, and if you have never lived in NOW for longer than it takes to finish the big roller coaster at Six Flags, then shut your hole about putting Marines in jail for war crimes. Be advised, I am not talking to my readers, but if this post gets linked up, I want regular folks to get this message loud and clear.

It is also important to note that there have been reports that just five minutes earlier and a block away from this incident, another wounded insurgent blew himself up. He took the life of a marine and severely wounded six other marines who were trying to give aid to this insurgent. Let us not forget that Senator Kerry received a purple heart for a very similar incident, although Kerry shot the boy in the back as he was fleeing. Not only was this marine correct in shooting the wounded insurgent, he was obligated to or risk the death or injury to whole unit.
