More on the Dutch reaction to the van Gogh murder

Two stories from Radio Netherlands, with thanks to Hans de Vreij:

1)How to kill an unbeliever - Why the arrests made in the wake of the gruesome murder of filmmaker Theo van Gogh are unlikely to uncover a Muslim terrorist network. Q&A with Prof. Hans Jansen, see http://www.rnw.nl/hotspots/html/isl041105.html

2) Ominous letters - At least two more Dutch politicians have been given additional police protection in the wake of Tuesday's murder of Dutch film maker and columnist Theo van Gogh; Dutch gov't to announce
additional measures to combat radical Islam in the Netherlands.

See http://www.rnw.nl/hotspots/html/dut041105.html

And indeed, the Dutch government has declared war on Islamic extremism, which, although vague, is considerably clearer than "war on terror." (Thanks to Filtrat for the link.)

I sincerely hope President Bush will rename his ‘war against terror’ to ‘war against Islamic extremism’ as well. The people in the West have the full right to know what our enemy is, since we can’t defeat an enemy if we cannot define it properly.

If there is one postive thimg that has emerged out of the horrific slaying of Mr Van GO, it is the reaction of the Dutch people. BRAVO!
Would a hundred such murders awaken the French however?

It´´s very interesting the reaction but many and many muslims are in prison in the Netherlands, there ae few prisons, many hopes of lifes and the unique solution is death penalty for terrorism and expulsion to algerian and moroccan prisons made by the EU, the muslims are 930,000 in Holland and with only the 1%,namely, 9,300 would be integrists, there are too people, greetings

Here is a bittorrent file of the controversial short documentary by Theo van Gogh and Ayaan Hirsi Ali. The subtitles are Dutch, but most of documentary is spoken English.

i have travelled many times to different parts of holland i have seen many changes in the population especially in the larger cities in recent years.
it would appear that the "rules of islam" go out of the window when it comes to murder/honour killings or making money i.e. selling drugs.
holland as many other countries now have to suffer the wraith of islamists for the slightist thing and what is left of fee speech should not be guarded in speaking out against the short falls of islam and its dangers to those unaware of them.

sites like this provide one of the few outlets where ordinary people can discuss issues that seem to be "glossed" over or even ignored in for lack of a better term "main stream media".

Nordthiad,

It is too much to expect giving a name to an enemey with the word 'Islam' in it.

As we are forced to talk in euphemisms, we should call it "war against Jihad".

while i agree that nordthiad & Uhller_Isshaytan make good points, i'm of the mind that a general description "war on terror" leaves flexibility in american foreign policy to consider non-islamic states like north korea, cuba, & venezuela as potential enemies requiring military confrontation. also, as we are not only fighting the violent philosophy of jihad, but the acoutrements of such movement -- i.e. heroin trafficking that funds terrorism, wmd proliferation, and other such activities -- that may attract non-muslim criminals to aid & abet the jihad, it seems more fitting to consider nordthiad's "war against islamic extremism" and Uhller_Isshaytan's "war against the jihad" as subdivisions of the war on terror. perhaps a good metaphor would be to consider that the "war of the pacific" and the "war in europe" were subdivisions of ww2

I am sadened by the reaction of some people who seem to forget that no religion will require people to kill in the name of God. The muslim religion is a peaceful one and we should not forget that terrorists are not to be associated with the rest of the muslim population.
It is true that theses days, we are confronted to massive attacks from muslim fundamentalists but let's not forget that we should all fight against terrorism and maybe it is time to let the muslim society express their opinion. The Coran is about peace and respect, there is no true muslim who will kill in the name of Allah.
We are all different but have one thing in common which is the search for peace maybe people should respect each other and make the effort to understand each other, accept it and work together to have a better place to live.

"I am sadened by the reaction of some people who seem to forget that no religion will require people to kill in the name of God".
Islam does
"The muslim religion is a peaceful one and we should not forget that terrorists are not to be associated with the rest of the muslim population".
When was the last time you saw muslims protesting on the streets with anti-terrorist signs and banners?
"It is true that theses days, we are confronted to massive attacks from muslim fundamentalists but let's not forget that we should all fight against terrorism and maybe it is time to let the muslim society express their opinion".
I thought murdering truth tellers is how muslim society expresses they're opinion?
"The Coran is about peace and respect, there is no true muslim who will kill in the name of Allah"
So there are no true muslims?
"We are all different but have one thing in common which is the search for peace maybe people should respect each other and make the effort to understand each other, accept it and work together to have a better place to live."
Maybe muslims should respect others with a different view.Rape, murder, honour killings, beheadings, bombs(attatched to children),school bombings(Beslan) etc.......
Respect ahhhh,of course we must respect Islam or die, right?
Dolly you are a fool, ignorant, nieve, there is no Utopia.
I am from Australia and in Sydney August 2000 August my daughter was gang raped by 14 Lebonese muslims over a 6 hour period in 3 different locations by 3 different gangs.
Explain to me why I should respect lowlife pigs like them?
