Iqbal Ahmad has been sentenced to life in prison. He will be fortunate if he isn't murdered before too long. The Human Rights Commission of Pakistan is mentioned in this story, but where are the international human rights groups? From the BBC, with thanks to Robert R.:
Iqbal Ahmad, a member of the Ahmediya community, was found guilty of being disrespectful to the Prophet Muhammad in a mosque near Faisalabad....Human rights groups have called the blasphemy laws draconian and say the burden of proof is too easy for the prosecution.
The laws cover offences against Islam, the Prophet and the Koran....
The Ahmediya community, to which Mr Ahmad belongs, professes allegiance to Islam but was declared to be beyond the faith by a constitutional amendment 30 years ago.
A spokesman for the community, Malik Khalid Masood, told the BBC that Mr Ahmad's conviction was "an act of retaliation by his own family" who opposed his recent conversion to the Ahmedi sect.
In October, a Pakistani man was sentenced to life imprisonment for burning a copy of the Koran under the same laws.
The Human Rights Commission of Pakistan has in the past called for changes in procedures so investigators can test the validity of blasphemy accusations before cases reach the courts.
Analysts say judges are often too scared of the reaction from powerful local Islamic leaders to throw out cases.

The human rights advocates are far to busy complaining about Abu Graib prison abuse and "genocide" in Falludjia.
The Americans won't harm them over being smeared, so that's much safer!
Try to report something like this about the Muslims and you are likely to have your throat cut. What a degenerated lot! What a bunch of useful idiots!
Talk about screwed up priorities. Life sentence for saying something not so nice about a guy who was basically a scumbag, but if this man were to slaughter his own daughter in an "honour"-killing, he'd probably get off. Oh, the beauty & wisdom of Islam!
From what I know the ahmediyas have had it real hard in both pak and b'desh.
The problem mainstream mussie sects have with ahmediyas is that though they affirm allah to be the only god, they don't quite agree that mohd was the last prophet and instead call the founder of their sect the last prophet. Thats ground enough to have them constiturionally declared non-muslim and hounded and persecuted in public and pvt life ever since.
Shame on puke-istan!
Robert, Terminator and all:
Amnesty International has been lobbying the governments of Pakistan and Bangladesh regarding human rights abuses committed against the Ahmadiyya for years. Here are several links to AI urgent actions and reports that detail the plight of the Ahmadis - they're well worth a read:
