I have spent a lot of time trying to explain how jihadists recruit; this is a little-examined field that actually reveals a great deal about the sources and goals of the international jihad. Here is more evidence from AP (with thanks to Jeffrey Imm) that recruiters play on the Islamic loyalties and sensibilities of those they are trying to recruit — a fact that presents severe difficulties for anyone who believes that the jihadists are twisting and hijacking the religion:
AMSTERDAM, Netherlands -- Two years before he allegedly killed a Dutch filmmaker in the name of radical Islam, Mohammed Bouyeri volunteered at his local community center and was a promising member of the second generation of Moroccan immigrants to the Netherlands. His transformation from student to purported jihadi terrorist fits a pattern of young Muslims in Europe who are being recruited by Islamic militants -- sometimes openly in the streets -- and trained to carry out violent attacks against the West.
Local youth who knew Bouyeri, 26, said he became interested in politics after the Sept. 11, 2001, attacks on the United States, but only grew radical after the death of his mother from cancer in fall 2002. He began wearing traditional Muslim dress, grew a beard and attended a mosque where key Sept. 11 hijackers and plotters had reportedly met, including Mohamed Atta....
The article then describes the killing and the note Bouyeri left on van Gogh's body, although it doesn't mention the Qur'an references in it.
Bouyeri also carried a will in his pocket written in proper Dutch titled "Baptized in Blood," urging others to "go for it, and Allah will give you Eden instead of this filthy Earth."...Bouyeri has yet to enter a plea to charges including murder and membership in a terrorist criminal organization. There are seven other suspects in the case who face charges of forming a terrorist conspiracy to murder Van Gogh and belonging to a terrorist criminal group.
At the time of the Van Gogh attack, Bouyeri was living with several of the suspects in an apartment where police seized fundamentalist literature and videos. He was not on any terror watch list, though he has been convicted of assault and a violent robbery, police said....
"They may start out as nice boys, but once they go to Afghanistan or wherever for training, then it's all over," said a young Muslim woman who grew up in Bouyeri's neighborhood.
She said she had seen recruiters handing out literature and propaganda openly on the streets and in some mosques. The woman asked not to be named for fear of reprisals....
Meanwhile, the focus has already shifted away from the implications of a Sharia killing on an Amsterdam street:
The case has prompted a backlash with Muslim groups yesterday asking the Dutch government to protect Islamic sites after an elementary school was bombed -- the latest incident following Van Gogh's murder. The powerful, pre-dawn explosion in Eindhoven, about 75 miles south of Amsterdam, caused no injuries but blew out the school's front doors and scattered glass and debris.Amsterdam city officials announced round-the-clock police protection for Islamic buildings. Ayhan Tonca, chairman of the Contact Group for Muslims and Government, said he'll ask today for permanent police protection, camera surveillance and undercover agents to help ensure the safety of Dutch Muslims -- about 1 million in a country of 16 million people.
More on recruitment:
After striking up a friendship, militants tell youths that modern mosques are too lax and take them to isolated, sect-like surroundings to convince them that taking part in jihad is a Muslim duty, with martyrdom the highest achievement."They watch jihad videos with each other and go to readings, congresses and (Muslim) summer camps. In addition, they participate in Internet chatrooms that discuss jihad and Islamic martyrdom," the report said.
As the culmination of their training, the young men make a written or recorded statement of farewell to their families -- similar to the one found at Bouyeri's arrest.
Bouyeri graduated from a local high school in 1995, and started college, but never finished. In 2001 he began volunteering at the Eigenwijks neighborhood center. A spokesman for Eigenwijks said Bouyeri quit coming in August 2003 because he was upset that alcohol was served there, and that women mingled with men.
Bouyeri began attending services at the al-Tawhid mosque. There, he befriended Samir Azzouz, 18, who was arrested in the Netherlands in June for allegedly planning to bomb a major Dutch landmark and is now awaiting trial.
Tawhid, which like most Muslim organizations has condemned Van Gogh's killing, said it was unaware Bouyeri ever attended.
In mid-June 1999, authorities believe, Sept. 11 pilots Mohamed Atta and Marwan al-Shehhi met during a conference on Islamic Puritanism held at Tawhid, along with Ramzi Binalshibh -- the man accused of coordinating the attacks on the United States. He's now under arrest in Pakistan.
Nice boy turns bad,eh! Happens all the time but only in ISLAM is a criminal called a 'holy warrior' who kills Infidels in the service of Allah and will be rewarded for it with 72 virgins/young boys. But then they are only copying their Prophet...
Next month on the 6th, Canada has a national day of mourning for 17 female engineer students that were murdered by a deranged loner with a rifle, the fact that he was of Algerian background and converted to Islam just before his rampage
didn't sem to show up in the media.
Today we have obsurb abuse laws that asume men are guilty because of the Muslim inflicting fear on females and making all men responsible since the media avoided offending Islam.
His suicide letter he wrote blamed all females for his problems and was angry females were in school getting educated for jobs they'll take away from men.
He was a ggod boy until the Quran got a hold of him, then Allah made it clear that he wasn't paranoid and that all women WERE out to get him and ruin his life, therefore they must be killed to avoid his future suffering .
Can you see a pattern here folks?
I would bet that the bomb that blew the doors off the school was set by a Muslim. That way they can claim that there is a cycle of violence, and they are no worse than anyone else. Pretty neat scheme, huh? Murder a non-Muslim, then blow up a bomb that ruins some doors that needed replacing anyway, collect insurance and renovate the school, and implicate the non-Muslims for terrorism. Meanwhile, the whole Muslim community gets off nearly Scot-free minus one Jihadist.
A Warning to all JWers
I'm astonished that, after all this time, my fellow JWers are still so susceptable to taqiyya and kitman. Anyone even CONSIDERING engaging the "hatshepsut" troll when it appears today should go back and read all of the threads from Nov. 6 & 7 JW articles and examine some of the egregious comments it made.
Now you are being targeted as potential da'wa subjects (Nov. 8 "Holland: mosques . . ." comments thread), and yet you simply accept the goodwill of this troll at face value. I recommend that you first examine its now-discredited comments on other threads (specifically the observations made by JTF), Spencer's warnings against addressing it or answering it in any way, and remember the familiar patterns exhibited by other muslim trolls. First they will "clear up our misconceptions", and if they fail to accomplish that, they finally resort to threats about eternal hellfire if they don't manage to cut off our heads first.
This troll has tried to hijack multiple threads on this site for its own agenda over the course of three days. It has been unmasked, and is a poser, [not what it claims to be, especially by way of profession and probably claiming convert status falsely as we see here frequently - some sort of da'wa tool; remember the "converts" who suddenly "saw the light" after September 11?] as most of them usually are. Please don't allow that to keep happening. You all know how to deal with muslim trolls. You should know the drill by now.
CGW:
Yes, for sure hatshepsut is a troll. Hand was tipped in the precis to the questionnaire. No respectful, legitimate researcher would operate in that manner, nor respond in the manner hatshepsut does (applying labels, etc.).
I offered him/her an annecdote about having engaged a Muslim co-worker on the topic of differences in dietary observances between Jews and Muslims that exemplfied the inherent contempt that has been taught to the latter for the former and hatshepsut offered the lamest of rationales imaginable.
Getting into p*ssing matches with trolls is dumb. Drawing them out to get them to further tip their hands does have a bit of a function.
Folks,
Please, PLEASE don't fall into the trap whereby you are persuaded that these terrorists are "nice" until they suddenly engage in hideous acts.
They aren't "nice," and they haven't BEEN "nice" since about the age of 6-7. Their intensive exposure to the principles of Islam from their earliest years has "primed the pump," and once they have passed puberty, there is little hope for change. It only awaits the pushing of a button to set off the terrorist within.
This phenomenon is much more than a simple psychological issue where a good man-to-man talk, laying out the facts, will lead to a "cure." There are serious neurodevelopmental phenomena involved, and any change, if possible at all, requires intensive intervention, with no guarantee that it would work.
There are a very few individuals whose minds, for a variety of reasons too long to address here, remain relatively immune to "brainwashing" of the kind we see in Islamia. Most of us probably have one or more of their books on our shelves today.
There are only three possible solutions to the problems faced by the civilized world today: 1) Destroy all Muslims; 2) Revamp Islam in such a way that the minds of its followers are not "hijacked" by irrationality; 3) Educate the children, from the earliest years, in the principles of a valid philosophy. By doing this, they will be able to view the current teachings of Islam through a different set of eyes, with a different pair of glasses. By doing this, they will be released from their intellectual/emotional prisons to live happily and productively on this earth, unlike the Dutch/Muslim terrorist murderer of van Gogh who said ". . .Allah will give you Eden instead of this filthy Earth."
Personally, I favor 3), followed by 2). For me, 1) remains unacceptable.
If one of these does not obtain, we, like Israel, will find ourselves in a defensive mode in fortresses for the rest of time.
"He began wearing traditional Muslim dress, grew a beard"
At the university I went to in the UK, people fitting that description were everywhere (and mostly engineering students as well... bit of similarity with some other people of note).
I knew one half-like that (not the beard bit just yet), from Pakistan, very friendly and good to get on with, but don't start anything about 9/11 with him or he'll go into a big long rant about how 4000 Jews didn't turn up for work that day (well, maybe they didn't... about par for the course though considering this is New York City and the financial sector we are talking about here LOL) I would not like to guess about what he'll be up to in ten years' time.
The scariest bit is that I have seen people working in AIRPORT SECURITY in the UK fitting that description... I think that there is a tragedy waiting to happen if nothing is done/they are not transferred.
Amsterdam city officials announced round-the-clock police protection for Islamic buildings. Ayhan Tonca, chairman of the Contact Group for Muslims and Government, said he'll ask today for permanent police protection, camera surveillance and undercover agents to help ensure the safety of Dutch Muslims -- about 1 million in a country of 16 million people.
Why are the police protecting Islamic buildings for God's sake?! They should be protecting native Dutch citizens from the onslaught of muslim fanatics. As always, muslims attack and kill non-muslims every day and are then "protected" so they can strike again!!! This is unbelievable!
Up here in Canada vandalism hoaxes are becoming the first assumption when reported in the news, just recently the Jewish community
had homes spray painted with hateful words on
front doors and cemetary headstones knocked over as well as the hateful words painted on them.
Not to be outdone, the next report on local vandalism was a Muslim
business owner that had the warehouse windows smashed from a firebomb and Swastika's sprayed on the wall, this was really odd and the truth came out that the Muslim wanted to make an insurace
claim to bail him out of a bad year for sales and used the public goodwill to play the victim.
Another case where a Jewish school was firebombed with a letter left behind blaming the middle east conflict for the attack and threatened
more violence. Three Jordanians immigrants were arrested and two were a "Mother and son" team handing down the family tradition of antisemitism.
Just after this attack a Mosque was reported to be firebombed,it happened at about 3:00am
and the fire was minor with "Jesus rules" sparayed on the walls.
OK folks, the custodian called 911 since he was in the Mosque but didn't hear the windows break
or any noise of a car leaving on the only road out from the area, also it was originally a one storey business office. So far(about 8 months later) no arrests have been made and this is not a rare case of the "Muslim crying wolf".
I wouldn't be the least bit shocked if the Islamists murder children or use them as sheilds to make the war on terror look cruel in the eyes of Americans. This is a ploy done by palestinians and it would be interesting to examine dead children and check to see if they were shot in the back by armed militants wanting to blame the IDF.

Europeans Face Tough Choices on Islam
NewsMax Wires
Sunday, Nov. 7, 2004
AMSTERDAM, Netherlands -- Europe's complex interplay with Islam appears to stand at a tipping-point, and the slaying of a Dutchman who made a movie critical of Islam could indicate one direction in which it is headed. "The Muslims say they're scared," said mourner Nicolette Toering. "No, we're scared."
Dutch authorities were investigating whether the chief suspect, a 26-year-old Dutch-Moroccan man detained shortly after the attack, acted alone out of rage or had links to wider extremist networks.
A five-page letter pinned to the body of Theo van Gogh, brutally murdered Tuesday as he was riding his bike down a busy boulevard in Amsterdam, called for Muslims to rise up against the "infidel enemies" in the West.
Other messages - later left at the sidewalk shrine where the 47-year-old filmmaker's throat was slashed - dripped with equal venom against radical Islam. "Enemies live among us," read one missive in a bed of flowers, votive candles and crosses.
The attack has underscored the hard political and social choices that European leaders face about Muslims and the wider Islamic world.
In December, European Union leaders will decide whether to overlook widespread public objections and move ahead with membership talks with Turkey, a Muslim nation of about 70 million people and a galloping birthrate that could push it past Germany's population in a generation.
European police agencies have sharply boosted cooperation against suspected Islamic terrorist groups following the March train bombings in Spain that killed 191 people. Washington's European allies in Iraq are reassessing their levels of military and commercial support following waves of attacks, kidnappings and beheadings blamed on Islamic militants.
EU officials last month signed the text of a proposed EU Constitution that still could face opposition from voters demanding a clear reference to Europe's Christian history.
But those big issues fade on the streets of many European centers. Here - even in places like tolerant Amsterdam - it's often expressed as a gnawing feeling that militant factions in Islamic immigrant communities are gaining ground and chipping away at values such as free speech and secular politics.
"There is a general feeling that a social collision is becoming inevitable," said Jan Rath, co-director of the Institute for Migration and Ethnic Studies at the University of Amsterdam. "People think it's been building for years and now finally coming to the surface."
The landmarks along the way included the 1989 death threat "fatwa," or religious edict, against British writer Salman Rushdie for alleged insults to Islam in "The Satanic Verses," the rise of neo-Fascist movements, the assassination of Dutch anti-immigrant politician Pim Fortuyn in 2002 and France's ongoing showdown with Muslims over a ban on headscarves and other religious apparel in schools.
'More Equal'
"My impression is the European voices that say, `Everyone is equal, but we are more equal than Muslims,' are growing," Rath said.
The Netherlands offers a good vantage point to gauge changing attitudes toward Muslim communities across Europe - which have grown more than 100 percent in the past 15 years, according to U.N. reports. Some sources place the Muslim population as high as 13.5 million in Western Europe, or more than 2 percent of the population, in addition to more than 6 million native-born Muslims in the Balkans.
Unlike the French or Spanish, the Dutch long had little direct contact with Islam apart from a colonial presence in distant Indonesia that ended in 1949. Muslim immigrants began arriving following World War II as reconstruction labor - as they did in Germany and other countries.
The workers, mostly Turks, assimilated well into Dutch society. Moroccans and other North Africans began arriving in the 1970s and 1980s, when more lenient laws allowed men to bring in their families.
But the situation in Holland was getting tougher. Jobs were more scarce - especially for the Moroccan immigrant children - and some politicians began trying to connect the rising crime rate with the swelling Muslim community: now about 1 million in a country of 16 million people.
Last year, a parliament member, Geert Wilders, pressed for a five-year ban on immigration from Turkey and Morocco. Dutch anti-terrorist agents, meanwhile, have intensified probes into alleged radical recruitment among young Muslims.
Van Gogh - a distant relative of the famous 19th-century Dutch painter Vincent Van Gogh - often tested the boundaries of free expression by denouncing Muslims in the most graphic terms. His last work, "Submission," a joint project with Somali-born lawmaker Ayaan Hirsi Ali, attacked the treatment of women under Islam.
The filmmaker's fans were as passionate as his detractors.
"He was trying to warn us about the dangers of radical Islam," said teacher Geert Plas as he visited the site where Van Gogh was ambushed. "Now maybe we'll listen. To me this is not just a small event. It's part of the World Trade Center and Madrid. We must see this."
The letter pinned to the victim's body also threatened death to Hirsi Ali, who has gone into hiding, and predicted the downfall of the "infidel enemies of Islam" in Europe, America and the Netherlands.
"The jihad (holy war) has come to the Netherlands," parliament speaker Jozias van Aartsen said.
The memorials that piled up on the dark brick sidewalk often crossed the line from sympathy to seething recriminations. "This is the true face of Islam," said a handwritten message. A framed poem called "Imam" ends with a stanza: "If you want to improve the world, start with yourself and your faith."
A banner waved from a fence: "Theo rests his case."
Christian prayer cards, crosses and biblical passages sat amid the flowers - a rare religious outpouring in one of Europe's most secular states.
"This doesn't just say something about the Netherlands," said Baukje Prins, assistant professor of social philosophy at Holland's Groninjen University. "It is an example of how international relations have become polarized."
At a mosque near the murder site, Friday prayers were dominated by talk of the slaying - sprinkled with worry about a possible backlash.
"We are in danger," a Moroccan man told a group of friends sitting in a circle on a carpeted floor.
"No, no," another man said. "We cannot give in to fear. This is our home now."
Moulay Idrissi listened and shook his head.
"I'm afraid. I can't deny it," said Idrissi, who emigrated from Morocco in 1978. "I feel respect for Muslims is falling away in Europe. When people have no respect, anything can happen."
A few hours later, suspected arsonists set fire to a mosque in the central Dutch city of Utrecht, but no injuries were reported.
A 22-year-old student, Abdul Salam, said he tries to tell Christian friends that Muslims have been in Europe since the Moors crossed into Spain in the 8th century.
"So I don't know what to think when people say I don't belong here because I'm Muslim," he said. "I was born here. I don't even speak Arabic. I am European. That's what I feel. That's what I am."
But Salam represents just one side of an internal struggle within Muslim communities in Europe, said Akbar Ahmed, a professor of Islamic studies at American University in Washington.
"Right now the West sees all Islam as a kind of monolith and wipes away all nuances," said Ahmed. "Some want to draw boundaries around Islam in Europe. Other Muslims want to deal with non-Muslims in a broad and tolerant way. It's not new to Islam. It's just new to Europe."

Jacques Chirac's Wrong War in the Wrong Place at the Wrong Time
Jerry Kotyuk
Monday, Nov. 8, 2004
A satirical piece about the French invasion of Ivory Coast
French President Jacques Chirac is a "misleader" who has made a rush to war in the Ivory Coast, causing needless deaths and injuries to innocent Ivorians and to the ill-equipped and poorly supplied French soldiers.
The horrific deaths of these soldiers are causing great sorrow to French mothers and fathers, and sowing seeds of doubt among untold millions of French citizens about this unnecessary war.
This war is a remnant of French militaristic and colonial oppressive power in the world. It is indeed the wrong war in the wrong place at the wrong time.
There is no threat to France from the Ivory Coast, and Chirac has acted unilaterally, without taking the time to work with our allies to raise a broad international coalition that would pass the global test. He has taken his eye off the ball of the real threat of global terrorism.
He has used excessive force of enormous magnitude in destroying the entire Air Force of the Ivory Coast. He has compounded his original arrogant error of sending troops by sending even more poor, young French soldiers to die on this cruel battlefield. I seriously doubt that Chirac's own children or grandchildren will be sent to fight in this poorly planned, incompetently run war.
Chirac's true motives in starting this unnecessary bloodbath are to steal the rich cocoa crop of the Ivory Coast, and to give no-bid billion-dollar contracts to his business cronies.
It is rumored that Chirac will even resume the military draft to raise enough troops to fight the growing insurgency in this far-off country.
These Ivorian freedom fighters are now threatening the lives of French citizens, and have already caused the death of another foreign national. Thus, their innocent blood will solely be on the hands of President Chirac.
Chirac has appealed for more help from the U.N., and the Security Council has bravely authored several new resolutions and condemnations of the fighting, calling for an end to the conflict. They have backed up their resolutions with the threat of an embargo and the the authorization to use "all necessary means" to to keep the peace. U.N. peacekeeping troops are on the ground there, but have not been involved in any of the hostilities.
I call for French misleader Chirac to prevent further bloodshed by pulling all French troops out of the Ivory Coast. He should give peace a chance, and if that doesn't work, I would be glad to assist him in calling an international summit. At this global summit, we will seek to understand the oppressed feelings of the Ivorian people, and look for ways of waging a more sensitive conflict.
Signed,
John F. Kerry
P.S. Am I eligible to run for president of France?
P.P.S. GWB just called. He said to tell you that if any of your French Mirage pilots drink too much wine and get really lost flying from Paris to Abidjan, they should not seek to enter U.S. airspace - we will not give permission for flyovers.
The recruitment methods are very similar to those of any cult - think of the Moonies or Jim Jones' Guyana compound. The only difference is the Islamists want to take over the world and kill any kufir.
OT, but does anyone have a clue about why the terrorist-targeted areas around Iraqi police stations, recruiting places, national guard offices, etc. aren't turned into pedestrian malls?
Anyone? Please?

Why such lack of coordination between police stations and the military in Iraq ?
When one police station is under attack,
you would expect that help would arrive by air
within a very short time - but nothing.
The assailants overwhelm the police stations and murder all within ( often the police surrender, obviously offered safe passage, and are then murdered ) - but never any help from the air ?
Why ?
Why are the good girls and guys not using modern technology to win the day ?
And why are we still allowing muslem immigrants into Canada ? How stupid are we ? I am truly afraid of the answer to that last question.
Oh, on the Ivory Coast interference by the French, the north, the rebels, are muslim; the south, the government, are Christian.
Even if there is fault on both sides, why undermine the government ?
cubed:
Not sure I understand your question. Are you asking: "Why are the terrorists targeting Iraqi police and national guard units instead of random civilans, like we see from terrorists in the West?"
As I understand it, the Iraqi police are being targeted for 3 main reasons:
1. To prevent the Iraqi government from being able to control terrorist held areas that we liberate.
2. To give the terrorists a free hand in drug-smuggling, kidnapping and other fund-raising activities.
3. To demonstrate to the Iraqi people that the government cannot protect them.
A few years ago Ideology was supposed to have died, meaning that we had beaten totalitarianism -Fascism and Marxism. Today we know that it has merely changed its form to Islamo-fascism and the so-called Anti-American Leftist philosophy to which are young people are subjected on a daily basis, wittingly or unwittingly, by their teachers in schools that are supported by the American taxpayer. The Left has become a partner with the fascists to bring down free and independent thought and behavior.
The ABÇs of Anti-Americanism

Islamo-fascist ideology is being pumped into school children around the world in both Muslim and non-Muslim countries. Marxism, though not a predominate ideology, is alive and well in China and Cuba and is enjoying a revival in other places.
Anti-Semitism and Nazi-style fascism is reviving in Europe side-by-side with Islamo-fascism. How then, can anyone be surprised that when the young are infected with a toxic ideology. All things considered, it is more surprising when they are not.

I tend to agree with C that this is really a surveillence move by Dams authorites while at the same time pacifying the mo's with so called "round the clock protection".
Yes Epg,
the volume of anti american hate in countries that should know better, mixed with growing nazi-style fascism, is daunting.
Islamofascism is everywhere, with its murders and threats, as it drives its way toward world dominance.
Europeans, in general, are much too over confident. It may take a lot of Van Goghs
for them to smarten up. And their anti-Americanism makes them blinder to their danger.
In fact, we are all too overconfident, or we would not be allowing more moslem immigrants to our countries.
It would be better for our governments to ban muslem immigration now than wait for lessons from the street.
I assume the subject of muslim immigration must be an ever important part of the dutch
political discussion, yet never a word spoken here.
I have some observations: Yes, the Qu'ran is a false book that glorifies violence. Yes, Muhammad cannot be a prophet of God. Yes, Islam has an exceptionally bloody history, with the Theo van Gogh murder being one more example.
Yet, the unidentified Muslim woman who spoke about radical recruiters in the mosques may well be one of those who accept that jihad needs to be surrounded with a host of regulations; and would prefer to live at peace with non-Muslim neighbors. This, and the case of the ALgerian-background immigrant in Ala-sux's piece brings us to the heart of the problem.
The West's embrace of a multicultural relativism for which tolerance is the chief and main political good is a bigger problem than every Muslim on the planet converting to machete-cult Wahabbism. A West with its moral underpinning and belief that some things are right and others wrong would be intellectually, morally, and physically well armed to send 1.5 billion violent Wahabbis back to the Empty Quarter of Arabia in pieces.
The fact that everyone but the perpetrators can be blamed for 9/11 and that the gunman of whom Ala-sux spoke expected his excuses to find a sympathetic audience exposes both the narcissism and the moral rot of modern Western education. Maybe this is why Da'wa is finding recruits in the West--not because Islam truly is an answer (no religion whose founder was a hands-on [and more] pedophile and who got a "revelation" ready made to hand him his disciple Zaid's wife really has moral answers), but because the West's own powers-that-be have disarmed the civilization they were elected to defend.
