The first report I read about the SUV said it had Texas plates, which is completely different than the vehicle being registered in Texas. I can see the plates being quite easy to move around the world.

Of course, you may only need the VIN to register a car, in which case the location of registration is odd, but doesn't mean much.

Thousands of left-wing protesters chanting anti-American slogans have clashed with police and set dozens of shops ablaze at the start of a delayed state visit by US President Bill Clinton to Athens.

Swarms of pink locusts swept through the Egyptian capital on Wednesday, evoking the biblical description of the plagues which struck in the time of Moses.
The swarms of millions flew high above tall towers or swooped down onto treelined streets, where scared pedestrians stamped
on them or ran for cover.
The flying insects arrived from neighboring Libya after devouring the countryside in central and western Africa in past months. But locust experts said they were unlikely to wreak similar havoc in Egypt, where agriculture is a cornerstone of the economy.
"This is really horrible," said one man as he ran past a building where locusts, some of them more than 3 inches (7.6 cm) long, smacked into office windows or landed on cars.
Some of the locusts, which arrived and disappeared in waves, settled on shrubs and trees. Authorities battled swarms at Cairo international airport, but flights were unaffected
"They are driven by strong winds ... Under current climatic conditions they will not likely cause damage," Christian Pantenius, a locust expert with the United Nations (news - web sites) Food and Agriculture Organization (news - web sites) (FAO), told Reuters.
Pantenius said the locusts would not feed voraciously when the temperature was under 30 degrees Celsius (86 degrees Fahrenheit). Forecasts put Cairo's temperature for the coming days at below 25 degrees Celsius.
Pantenius said the locusts were arriving in medium-sized swarms. "They will very likely either die or migrate further to the south," he said, adding that the Saudi and Sudanese authorities had been alerted
The locusts appeared to be passing through Egypt and did not pose a threat to agriculture, Egypt's official Middle East News Agency quoting Agriculture and Land Reclamation Minister Ahmed el-Laithi as telling a news conference.
Agriculture is a key sector of the Egyptian economy, employing millions of people in the North African country, which has a population of about 70 million.
The locust swarms have already traveled on the wind from North Africa to Cyprus. They can form swarms of tens of millions, occupying hundreds of square kilometers (miles).

The fact the SUV was registered in Texas (or anywhere else for that matter) doesn't concern me. It sems pretty well established that organized rings of car thieves in North America target such expensive vehicles which, after being stolen, are moved to warehouses, or shipping containers, and are moved out of the country within days. Usual destinations are stated as eastern Europe, Russia, Middle East and Africa.

Captured base could be terrorist training camp

SALMAN PAK, Iraq — The rusted shell of an old passenger jet sat out in a field, its tail broken off. Good for hijacking practice, U.S. Marines speculated Sunday as they examined an Iraqi training base about 20 miles south of Baghdad.
The Americans also found a full obstacle course, as well as a three-story concrete tower draped with ropes, apparently for rappelling.
President Saddam Hussein's regime has said the camp, part of a larger military reservation in a bend of the Tigris River, was used for anti-terrorism training for Iraqi special forces.
But U.S. officials and others have long suspected the camp trained terrorists. Two former Iraqi military officers told the New York Times and PBS's "Frontline" in the fall of 2001 that Iraqis and non-Iraqi Arabs were brought here to practice hijacking planes and trains, planting bombs and staging assassinations.
U.N. inspectors looking for biological weapons reported seeing a plane there. The defectors said the plane was a Boeing 707. The one seen Sunday was not.
Another part of the base was Saddam's main biological weapons center before the first Persian Gulf War, U.N. inspectors learned in the 1990s. They said about 10 scientists and 100 other people worked on developing ways to deliver anthrax, ricin and other deadly substances over wide areas.
The Republican Guard 2nd Corps headquarters also is nearby, and some intelligence experts have said another camp trained young members of the Fedayeen Saddam militia in assassination, sabotage and espionage.
The military reservation sprawls next to Salman Pak, a town named for a 7th century Persian convert to Islam who was the prophet Muhammad's barber. Salman Pak, which means "Salman the Pure" in Farsi, died in the region and a shrine to him in the town attracts many Muslim pilgrims.
In attacking the military base, the Marines kept away from the nearby ruins of Ctesiphon, a Persian capital — its main architectural wonder, the third century, 99-foot-high arched dome of King Sapor's great banqueting hall, still standing.
Hours after Marines occupied the base Sunday morning, a tour of the suspected terrorist training compound found a series of curious sights.
Plastic chairs were bolted to the ground facing each other, creating a kind of classroom in a clearing in the woods. A nearby storehouse was filled with gas masks, Baath Party plaques and orange rappelling gear. Farther along, speedboats lay beached.
The passenger plane's fuselage lay alone. A fire engine sat at one intersection. Elsewhere, the twisted metal wreck of a double-decker bus stood near three decrepit train cars.
At U.S. Central Command in Qatar, Brig. Gen. Vincent Brooks said Marines raided the complex using information obtained from captured foreign fighters of various nations, including Egypt and Sudan.
"The nature of the work being done by some of those people we captured, their inferences about the type of training they received, all these things give us the impression that there is terrorist training that was conducted at Salman Pak," Brooks said Sunday.
He said the camp was "just one of a number of examples" of such training activity found in Iraq by coalition troops. "It reinforces the likelihood of links between this regime and external terrorist organizations," he said.
The base was deserted when the Marines reached it after bombing and shelling it through the night.
After intelligence officers finished searching the training camp, Marines began stuffing boxes and plastic bags with military IDs, pickaxes, Qurans, old uniforms, gas masks and a couple of soccer uniforms.
"It looks like guys are coming back from the shopping mall," said Capt. Glenn Van Airsdale, a helicopter pilot from Neenah, Wis.

Prof's Report Claims "islamic Terrorists Have Embedded Themselves in Canada's Arab Community" -- Islamic Congress Says It's a Hate Crime and Seeks Retraction

The publication of a news report today (September 9, 2004) by Robert Fife of the National Post containing assertions by Carleton University professor Martin Rudner that "Islamic terrorists have embedded themselves in Canada's Arab community," has Canadian Muslims outraged and fearful, says the Canadian Islamic Congress.

Rudner, who writes for the RCMP and CSIS on security and terrorism, is founding director of Carleton University's Canadian Centre of Intelligence and Security Studies. In the same news item, he is quoted as saying that "they [alleged Islamic terrorists] seek to recruit and raise funds, which they use as a base for operational activities against the United States and its allies."

Responding to Rudner shortly after the National Post story broke, CIC national president Dr. Mohamed Elmasry condemned his false allegations. "These kinds of inflammatory remarks are just another example of post-9/11 paranoia," he said. "Under normal circumstances, one could easily ignore Mr. Rudner's biased research, but assertions such as he makes in today's National Post continue to victimize Canadian Muslims out of all proportion to any other ethnic or religious group. It is a hate- crime."

"If Mr. Rudner has evidence or any information to back up his allegation that 'Islamic terrorists have embedded themselves in Canada's Arab community,' then he has a legal obligation to produce that evidence for law enforcement agencies," said CIC legal counsel Faisal Joseph. "And if he has no evidence, then he should not defame or slander Canadian Muslims with false allegations about increasing the national security risk tfor all Canadians. The CIC is taking all legal remedies and options into consideration, but will await a formal response by Mr. Rudner before exploring them."

"Freedom of speech and expression are indispensable elements of Canadian life, guaranteed by our Charter of Rights and Freedoms," Dr. Elmasry continued, "but there is a line beyond which certain views, constantly repeated and focused, constitute a real and present danger to specific groups of people. We at CIC believe Mr. Rudner has crossed that line into the area of hate-literature and it is shameful behaviour for a Canadian academic. Furthernore, by publishing his statements, the National Post become a partner and accomplice to his hate message."

"Whenever someone with a high public profile makes assertions that intentionally demean a certain group, such as Muslim Canadians, it is almost inevitable that a damaging backlash will occur among the uninformed," added Mr. Faisal Joseph.

"Instead of recognizing that the vast majority of any religious and ethnic community deplore and seek to eradicate terrorism, people like Mr. Rudner are constantly putting Canadian Muslims on the defensive, as if we are all guilty of 'terrorism' until proven otherwise," said CIC national vice-president, Mrs. Wahida Valiante.

I don't see the mystery here. The SUV most likely was stolen from a contractor and was going to be rigged as a car bomb to be used in Iraq. I have seen trucks packed up in the US and shipped to Iraq with US registration stickers on them myself. There must be hundreds of contractor vehicles with US registration over there by now.

Letter From a Fallujah Marine
Once again the blogger world has stepped up to the plate to do job the mainstream media is supposed to do - but seldom bothers anymore.

While U.S. and Arab media went-pedal-to-the-metal with the NBC video of a Marine in Fallujah committing the "atrocity" of defending himself and his platoon against a wounded terrorist, PowerlineBlog.com has helped put the incident in perspective, by publishing a letter from a brother Marine who describes just what our guys are up against. The moving account is beginning to make the rounds on talk radio, with WABC host Mark Levin sharing it with his audience Thursday night.
We thought it was worth doing the same:
Letter From a Fallujah Marine:
This is one story of many that people normally don't hear, and one that everyone does. This is one most don't hear:
A young Marine and his cover man cautiously enter a room just recently filled with insurgents armed with AK-47's and RPG's. There are three dead, another wailing in pain. The insurgent can be heard saying, "Mister, mister! Diktoor, diktoor (doctor)!"
He is badly wounded, lying in a pool of his own blood. The Marine and his cover man slowly walk toward the injured man, scanning to make sure no enemies come from behind. In a split second, the pressure in the room greatly exceeds that of the outside, and the concussion seems to be felt before the blast is heard. Marines outside rush to the room, and look in horror as the dust gradually settles.
The result is a room filled with the barely recognizable remains of the deceased, caused by an insurgent setting off several pounds of explosives.
The Marines' remains are gathered by teary-eyed comrades, brothers in arms, and shipped home in a box. The families can only mourn over a casket and a picture of their loved one, a life cut short by someone who hid behind a white flag.
But no one hears these stories, except those who have lived to carry remains of a friend, and the families who loved the dead. No one hears this, so no one cares.
This is the story everyone hears:
A young Marine and his fire team cautiously enter a room just recently filled with insurgents armed with AK-47's and RPG's. There are three dead, another wailing in pain. The insurgent can be heard saying, "Mister, mister! Diktoor, diktoor (doctor)!" He is badly wounded.
Suddenly, he pulls from under his bloody clothes a grenade, without the pin. The explosion rocks the room, killing one Marine, wounding the others. The young Marine catches shrapnel in the face.
The next day, same Marine, same type of situation, a different story. The young Marine and his cover man enter a room with two wounded insurgents. One lies on the floor in puddle of blood, another against the wall. A reporter and his camera survey the wreckage inside, and in the background can be heard the voice of a Marine, "He's moving, he's moving!"
The pop of a rifle is heard, and the insurgent against the wall is now dead. Minutes, hours later, the scene is aired on national television, and the Marine is being held for committing a war crime. Unlawful killing.
And now, another Marine has the possibility of being burned at the stake for protecting the life of his brethren. His family now wrings their hands in grief, tears streaming down their face. Brother, should I have been in your boots, I too would have done the same.
For those of you who don't know, we Marines, Band of Brothers, Jarheads, Leathernecks, etc., do not fight because we think it is right, or think it is wrong. We are here for the man to our left, and the man to our right. We choose to give our lives so that the man or woman next to us can go home and see their husbands, wives, children, friends and families.
For those of you who sit on your couches in front of your television, and choose to condemn this man's actions, I have but one thing to say to you. Get out of your recliner, lace up my boots, pick up a rifle, leave your family behind and join me. See what I've seen, walk where I have walked. To those of you who support us, my sincerest gratitude. You keep us alive.

It's more likely they were trying to target planes taking off or landing at Baghdad airport. Aircraft are most vulnerable there and within range of Jihadi weapons. It would be a big morale boost to them to shoot down a C-130 or something.

Iraq: Muddy Boots in the Mosque

Last week a number of newspapers published a picture of U.S. Marines
relaxing inside the Khulafah Al Rashid mosque in Fallujah after storming
it. The Marines, shown in full-battle gear trampling prayer carpets with
their boots, were members of Charlie Company, First Battalion, Eighth
Marine Regiment. Some were shown lying nonchalantly on the carpets of the
holy site, eating and drinking with their weapons next to them, or
brandished by those standing and still entering the mosque.

The photographer, Louis Binco, who took the picture, did his job. It was a very good shot, one for which he should be complimented. The Los Angeles Times, one of the many papers that published it, also did its job too. It
was part of a very good story.

But the folks in the military who allowed
those Marines to sit, sleep, keep their boots and weapons and have their pictures taken inside a holy site in Fallujah, did the United States a huge disfavor.

This picture has since developed a life of its own.

Just as those other pictures of abused Iraqi prisoners inside the now infamous Abu Ghraib prison, a picture speaks volumes during a war,
especially as it has now migrated from website to website, as well as being published repeatedly, sent and resent over the internet a million times to become part of a solid wall of hatred against America among Muslims.

Very few things can be more provocative than an enemy soiling your place of
worship, especially as it is sent out with the subject identification that
says: "Get Your Feet Out of My Mosque…"

I just can't imagine why they aren't also circulating pictures of Margaret Hassan's execution, or the execution and mutilation of the Polish-born Iraqi convert to Islam at the same time. Can anyone out there enlighten me?

I'm not surprised that a Texas-registered vehicle made it to Iraq. When I was in Guangzhou, China, there were lots of reports from the consulate about stolen cars from America being resold in China, including to agencies of the Chinese government.
