AMSTERDAM — Police are reportedly investigating a possible connection between the man suspected of killing Dutch filmmaker and columnist Theo van Gogh and the terror network al-Qaeda.The Netherlands-born suspect — identified as Mohammed B., 26, holding Dutch and Moroccan nationality — also had contact with eight other men arrested on Wednesday on suspicion of terrorist activities.
The arrests were made as police raided B.'s house in Marianne Philipsstraat in Amsterdam-Slotermeer and four other homes in the Dutch capital on Wednesday. Police seized computers, videos and literature.
The men are suspected of being part of a criminal gang, but it is not yet clear if they are also being linked to involvement in the murder of Van Gogh, who was shot and stabbed on an Amsterdam street at about 8.45am on Tuesday.
They were identified by their nationality — six Moroccans, an Algerian and a Spanish-Moroccan. They are aged between 19 and 27.
B. is reported to be an acquaintance of the eight suspects, having stayed at the raided premises. The authorities previously arrested several suspects at the raided homes in Amsterdam West and North last year on allegations they were involved in the bloody terror attacks in Casablanca.
Amsterdam chief public prosecutor Leo de Wit said the men arrested on Wednesday were not among those arrested last year.

I am simply amazed at the reach of al Qaeda. I would suspect that while the organization does have global reach, that at least some of these groups that say they are affiliated with al Qaeda are simply "wannabes." I think these suspects may fall in this group.
The reason I question al Qaeda involvement is that individual assassination does not seem to fit with their overall modus operandi. They tend towards large bombings in urban areas where they can get the most media exposure and body count.
This does not seem to fit in that mold, indicating either a shift in their M.O., an independent attack outside of their al Qaeda obligations, or that this is another group entirely.
I think it a big mistake to feel the necessity to tie every jihadi to al Qaeda. It's the ideology of political Islam that is the enemy and restricting its identity to a single organization obfuscates its scope. Hizbu'allah, for example, is more pernicious than al Qaeda. The Iranian mullahs that founded Hizbu'allah even more so.

Al-Qaeda is getting weaker by the minute. The whole world is watching how the Netherlands handle the Van Gogh situation. Smack these animals down hard, life in prison (he would receive the death penalty the States) for the killer and many years in prison for the others. You must make an example out of these islamic bastards that this will not be tolerated. They need to be made aware of exactly who it is that runs things in Dutch country. Is it the Dutch authorities that are in control, or is the immigrant "guests" that are in control? If they don't then the muslims will make a mockery out of the Dutch judicial system. They will have a license to get away with even worse crime against her OWN citizens. I can hardly believe how the governments in Europe will let immigrants urinate all other their laws and customs. I think you really have to look at all jihad attacks on Europe as "Al Qaeda" ( the organization the BBC claim didn't exist....on a show called the power of nightmares ironically airede after the BBC nightly news in which the non-existant group were mentioned at least four times).
