- A California woman reveals to ABC News that she unknowingly married a Muslim extremist who helped set up what authorities say was one of the first al Qaeda sleeper cells out of their Orange County apartment complex.Saraah Olson says she watched as her then-husband, Hisham Diab, and his group transformed local teen Adam Gadahn into an America-hating fanatic who she says is the masked man who promised in an al Qaeda video message released in Pakistan late October that the "streets of America will run red with blood."

"I was just a stepping stone to a green card," Olson said. "I married a terrorist. I married somebody who did not like America, who didn't like Americans."
Gadahn, who met Olson's former husband at a local mosque, was "fresh meat," she said. "Someone they could control. Not only that, he's very unassuming-looking, he can do a lot of their tasks."
The voice, gestures and rhetoric of the video's "Azzam the American" were all familiar to Olson, especially the phrase "red with blood," which was one of the group's favorite sayings, she said.
And over the course of three years, Olson said, some of Osama bin Laden's top deputies would stay with her and her husband, including blind Sheik Omar Abdel-Rahman, who would later go to prison for life for his role in organizing terrorist plots against the United States.
Olson said she repeatedly tried to notify the FBI of her husband's suspicious activities, but that she was never taken seriously. "I'm in hell," Olson remembers thinking after she recognized Abdel-Rahman in connection with the 1993 World Trade Center bombings. "I have entered the bowels of hell and I'm going to be here forever. And I've only been married seven months. I've got a terrorist in my house."
The FBI said in a statement that counterterrorism is their top priority. "Whenever we receive credible information pertaining to terrorist threats against the United States, the FBI acts immediately to thoroughly pursue all such leads," the statement read.
Federal authorities say the couple's neighbor Khalil Deek, considered a major al Qaeda figure, ran the Orange County sleeper cell operation.
Diab, who obtained a U.S. passport after marrying Olson, left the country suddenly in 1998. He is now being sought by U.S. authorities and is believed by intelligence officials to be hiding in Pakistan with top al Qaeda leaders....

The honeymoon was short-lived, however. First, she said Diab insisted she wear the hijab, a head scarf worn by certain devout Muslim women, and conform to other strict Islamic customs.And the beatings came next, she said, provoked by what were deemed violations of her husband's strict rules, which including forbidding physical contact with any man. She says he hit her the first time just weeks after their wedding for accidentally bumping into the manager of their apartment building.
"You have to listen to me and I am God," she said Diab told her. "Follow the rules."
Olson's son Ryan, now a teenager, says he was beaten almost daily when he did poorly in the Arabic lessons he was forced to take.
"I mispronounced something and that set him off," the college freshman said. "And I remember he clasped both his hands together and just hauled off and hit me right square in the back. I remember the wind, you know, getting knocked out of me, crying out."
Ryan said Diab's cell tried to recruit him into their group and he would be brought to small meetings where the men would rail and plot against America.
"He wanted me to be just as extreme as he was you know, hate America, anything that his little group didn't like," he said. "I just can't really say I ever believed it. I just went along, just nodded my head."
And Saraah Olson admits she played a role in drawing up the papers for a fake charity, called Charity Without Borders, that the cell used to funnel money overseas. The organization would not be discovered or shut down until after the Sept. 11 attacks.
It was an act of desperation, Olson said. "I'm not proud of it. Not proud of it at all," she said. "I just knew that I lived in hell and I wanted out. And if helping him do whatever it was that he was doing meant that I wouldn't get hit, I was willing to do it at that point."
What a dumbass woman! I can imagine getting stuck in an unfortunate situation but remaining stuck?? Rather should it be choosing to remain stuck? Hello, this is America and you're an American woman not some helpless muzzie chattel.

I'm not too sure about this woman's innocence - for all I know she's playing some kinda 'game' herself. Getting beaten and stuff weeks into marriage by an illegal immigrant? Arabic lessons and beatings for the son? Why would any american woman stand for it? And an educated one at that, living in Orange county?! Was this woman deriving some kinda 'emotional payoff' from misery? I wouldn't rule it out. She's come out clean now only because jail would be the alternative.

voletti, she wasn't a dumbass, just scared. If you haven't been in that situation, you really can't judge her. I was in an abusive marriage for a long time, and I know just exactly what she meant when she said she was stuck. once the hitting starts, the verbal abuse goes with it, and you'll do almost anything to keep from having it happen again. I feel horribly sorry for her. It doesn't mean that she isn't responsible for helping with that charity, but still, my heart aches for her.
It's easy to be frustrated with women who fall for powerful men and then don't know how to stop being used by them. Shows a certain emotional and intellectual lack, but..........
What really makes me mad is that the FBI wouldn't take her seriously!
We see in movies where the dumb authorities won't listen to someone who is trying to tell them something important and you think, 'Aw come on. That would never happen. These 'people in charge' aren't that stupid and bullheaded'.
But it seems that they can be. So if you are going to report something, make it sound important. Give evidence, not just "I'm in hell here...", sounding like a simple domestic situation, not a terror threat.
We ARE dealing with mostly men here, in these positions, and COMMUNICATION is not their forte!
You have to spell it out and give them reason to fear for their jobs if they don't check it out. You can't just seem to be some 'hysterical' woman, someone they automatically have no respect for.

Why would the FBI investigate any lead regarding Islam? The FBI is undergoing 'sensitivity training' by CAIR..hello? They put some of the original CAIR folks in prison, however, our government is now legitimizing the organization and training our protectors in Islam. I live in the area, and our local newspaper, the Register, FBI, law enforcement are in complete denial. The paper not only ignores the controversy about CAIR and our own local terrorists (Adam and Hadayet, for instance) but prints puff piece profiles on CAIR, the local radical mosque and its leaders that omit any reference to their connections to terrorism or to radical statements they have made elsewhere.
I don't know if this woman is for real, but the PC culture here sure is.

Are y'all so scared that you have to put down others just to make sure you're safe? And safe from what? Don't answer 'stupidity', 'cause you've got that in spades, judging from the comments made.
The danger in these kinds of judgmental remarks is that the attitude shown is what keeps women like this in these terrible relationships. "I told you so!" is one of the most damaging statements ever made, because it pretty much ensures that the recipient won't admit to making a mistake ever again. That doesn't encourage anyone in a similar situation to ask for help when it's needed.
This woman ought to be praised and supported for being brave enough to step forward. What she's doing isn't easy, especially since enemies like hers can be nasty. The real point of this story is the fact that the FBI didn't take her seriously. Don't start bleating about feminism being so helpful until a woman like this can get an FBI agent to listen to what she's saying.

Actually, I sympathize with Paula Olson. She tried to make a marriage work, even if it's abusive. I've known both women and men in such situations (albeit the women are more numerous--there's something in the Y chromosone that lets us men walk away and rough it a little more easily).
As for the people who argue that as an "educated" woman she should've known better, I wonder. Our modern "educations" do tend to make us Americans so open-minded that our brains fall right out of our heads, splatter on the floor, and get trodden underfoot by every shmo who comes along.
I've come to believe that the problem isn't prejudice, for prejudices are the walls built by our own experience and the experience of others whom we trust--and hence they protect us. The trick is just making sure these walls have sufficient doors and windows in them. Today, American education has deliberately torn down all the walls, and now its products go out and face people whose walls have no doors and windows.
Finally, if you want to make a difference and get rid of the dumbasses who made such things possible, get elected to Congress or work hard at the law and end up on the bench. If you're a consular officer faced with a visa case, you have to do what the law will support--not follow your instincts.
Is there a photo of this woman available? I hate to sound bitchy, but Western females who convert to Islam usually have faces well worth hiding behind a veil.
There is a similar case here in Australia - an Australian woman (ex-army, believe it or not) married a terrorist in an arranged marriage - I think she knew him for a week or so, but as a good Muslim slave, she agreed to marry him.
Of course he turned out to be terrorist, suspected of coming to Australia to carry out a bombing in Sydney. And of course, he married her to access her army knowledge - but apparently, this thought never occurred to her. Until he left Australia ---
Where have these women been living for the past few decades? The mistreatment of females in the Muslim world is so well known that its a given, yet women keep marrying these guys and coverting to a 'religion' that regards them as cattle.
I find it very hard to feel the slightest sympathy for them.

This post has made me think of something....
I wonder if there are any dedicated anti-jihadists who have become muslims to try and infiltrate terrorist organizations. It would be easy for a beautiful woman to seduce a piggish muslim cleric looking for a 9th wife, just as it is easy for young men to get recruited by terrorists . I know I couldn't personally do it myself, because there's no way I could even pretend to follow such a blood-stained satanic cult, or even pretend to be nice to raving religious loonies saying nasty hateful shit about infidels and such like. But the more calm and collective anti-jihadists may be able to pull it off.
It's dangerous, and it would be extremely punishing to have to act like the same kind of vermin responsible for millions of murders... but in the end it could be extremely beneficial and rewarding for the participant, and it's certainly something we should all think about. Imagine being responsible, personally, for bringing down a plot to blow up the white house, hi-jack a plane, or anything like it. Imagine the sense of fullfillment you'd get, knowing that you personally saw to it that a major terrorist organization was dismantled, and for the arrests of terrorist scum involved in it, seeing the looks on there faces as they realised you'd betrayed them , just as those traitors betray the western countries that give them new lives every day.
The main danger of something such as this though is if the group you'd been part of was raided before you had a chance to expose them to the police, and you were arrested as one of them.
Worth a study folks.
DianeC, the homeliness or comeliness of the women involved should not matter. Maybe I've just reached the age when everyone under 35 is pretty to me (I am now feminist sympathizer, except on equal pay for equal work and suffrage), but the issue is that these women were used and abused.
Another comment. I've spent many years in Taiwan. Generally, nobody is more cheery and upbeat than the typical Taiwanese "Lao Ban Niang/boss lady" (老闆娘) with whom you deal in a store. After all, she wants your business! Years ago, when I wanted lamb for Easter, I went to a halal butcher to get it (this is pork, chicken, and duck country in spades, folks). Like most identifiable Muslims on the island back then, the man of the family in charge was ex-military from the Mainland. Well, the boss ladies with whom I dealt, while dressed like any other ex-North China women of their age, impressed me as being fundamentally sad people--even to the point where I was shocked at this recognition. This vignette from one of the ragged fringes of the Islamic world is something I think about every time someone raises the question of women in Islam.
Although plenty of women stay in abusive marriages because they are 'scared' (alot of them are scared of being alone) there comes a point where one MUST draw the line...the abuse of our children. There is no way on Gods green earth (first off that I would even spit in the direction of an arab/muslim man) that I would allow ANY man to abuse my children. This woman allowed some poor excuse for a man to beat her child....and that is NEVER excusable. I am in a second marriage and have 2 children from my first (also 2 with him) and (although he never would) if he were to abuse ANY of the children in any way he would be out on his ass, I would rather be alone and have my children protected than be with a man and have them be abused.
