A self-confessed former operative for the south-east Asian terror group Jemaah Islamiyah today became the first witness to directly link the Indonesian cleric Abu Bakar Ba'aysir to the organisation.Nasir Abbas, a Malaysian, told an Indonesian court that Mr Ba'aysir had sanctioned the murder of non-Muslims, funded a terrorist training camp, and met the al-Qaida leader, Osama bin Laden. Mr Abbas described Mr Ba'aysir as the head of Jemaah Islamiyah, a militant group seen as being the south-east Asian arm of al-Qaida.
The accusation came during Mr Ba'aysir's continuing trial on terrorism charges. Prosecutors say that, as the head of Jemaah Islamiyah, Mr Ba'aysir inspired his followers to carry out the October 2002 nightclub bombings in Bali, in which 202 people were killed, and last year's attack on the JW Marriott hotel in Jakarta, in which 12 died. If convicted, he could be sentenced to death.
Mr Ba'aysir denied all Mr Abbas' testimony - the first to directly link the 66-year-old to Jemaah Islamiyah. Hundreds of Mr Ba'aysir's supporters jeered and shouted "liar!" as Mr Abbas addressed the court in southern Jakarta. "You are saying this because the police forced you to," one man yelled.
The US and Australia have both accused Mr Ba'aysir of being a terrorist leader in south-east Asia, and urged Jakarta to bring him to trial for a second time after he was acquitted of related terrorism offences last year.
Q: How many clerics dies in suicide bombings?
Answer: zero.
The clerics are the real masterminds, brainwashing gullibles into becomes footsoldiers (fodder, actually) for jihadi martyrdom. Thwe gullibles aren't innocent either but the clerics are the brains that keep growing new hands.

JAKARTA (AFP): The terrorism trial of Indonesian cleric Abu Bakar Ba'asyir was halted abruptly Tuesday as his supporters tried to attack a witness testifying against the alleged leader of the Jamaah Islamiyah (JI) extremist group.
The row erupted as Ba'asyir's lawyers scolded Mohammad Nasir Abbas, a former key member of JI, for repeatedly replying "no comment" as they cross-examined his claims the cleric was now the group's leader.
Police came to the rescue of Abbas, a Malaysian who served 10 months in prison in Indonesia for immigration offences, as Ba'asyir's supporters tried to grab him from the witness stand, prompting judges hearing the case to flee the court.

The government, even the head- honcho 'Bambang Yudhiyono'-
denies that Jemaiah Islamia exists. The media willingly portrays Indonesia as a place of 'moderate' Islam, only a small percentage (5%) being in fact militant or 'extremist'.
That is cerainly not the case. I would suggest that you have at least 50 per cent on the side the Islamic movement.

Bashir is as guilty as Hell but I remain unconvinced he will ever be convicted. Nah, this shark toothed Cleric will be let off with a warning[ for benefit of U.S and Oz] to continue preaching Jihad and enjoy home comforts of his young wife.

Fact is the shias in Pakistan have realised this simple truth "Finish the clerics, finish jihad".
Of course, in their case it ain't 'clerics' but 'sunni clerics' and it ain't jihad but 'sunni jihad'.
The cancer of sectarianism has bitten itself so deep into paki society that in the past few months alone there've been several attempts at assasination of the top clerics in the top madrassas - the mufti shamzai killing being the most prominent.

Why would would they be worried about Abbas' testimony being 'lies?'
The Qur'an SPECIFICALLY instructs muslims to deceive non-Muslims. Therefore, Indos should be THANKFUL that the man cannot be trusted, since if the infidels could not trust him, that would mean Muslims could. If the Indonesian police were getting this man to lie on their behalf, that would mean the infidels were being lied to just as the Qur'an requires! A lie will always be a lie. It wouldn't be beneficial to the 'infidels' really if Abbas' testimony WAS phony.
