Congressman: Terrorists Plan To Attack Power Plant. Government: No, They Don't

From AP, with thanks to Jeffrey Imm:

CONCORD, N.H. -- A Pennsylvania congressman who is writing a book about an Iranian plot to conduct an attack on the United States says a terrorist group in that country is planning to attack New Hampshire's Seabrook nuclear plant.

But state and federal officials are playing down the comments from Delaware County Republican Curt Weldon, reported this week in The New York Sun. They say they know of no specific threat against Seabrook.

"There is always that general possibility (of a terrorist attack on the Seabrook reactor)," said Jim Van Dongen, state Emergency Management spokesman, "but we haven't received any information that it's going to happen tomorrow."

The Nuclear Regulatory Commission said no particular sites have been threatened.

"As we have said before -- and it continues to be the case -- there has been no credible threat against a specific nuclear power plant," NRC spokeswoman Sue Gagner said. "We are in regular contact with intelligence and other federal officials on such matters."

A message seeking comment was left Friday morning with Weldon's press secretary in Washington.

Weldon, the vice chairman of the House Armed Services Committee, told The Sun that a source with high-level Iranian government contacts had told him a terrorist group in Iran plans to hijack Canadian airliners and crash them into an American reactor.

Reminds me of thatmovie "meltdown' where a bunch of terrorists takeover a calif nuke plant. Seems all 1 has to do is shut down the cooling system and the rector core will automatically overheat and explode.
Dunno how much of that is science and how much of that is hollyweird fiction.

In any case, nuke sites are automatically BIG targets and shud be extremely well guarded. From what i know some have been declared no fly zones.
What about the rest?

Many nuclear power plants are easy targets. A relative of mine sent me photos of one that he passed on a river in his small pleasure boat. He was close enough to the building to hit it with a baseball. Someone with weapons and intent could surely take over the plant. The number of soft targets in the U.S. is so great that our only option is pre-emption. You simply cannot protect every possible target in the U.S. Although I am critical of the TSA and a number of our other "protections", I must admit that it is fantastic that we have gone more than three years without a domestic incident. My hat is off to whoever is responsible for this record.
As to the use of "Canadian airliners" to attack U.S. nuclear power facilities, I have no doubt of the possibility. I think that many in "Canukistan" would see this as an opportunity to sell us more hydroelectric power.

And what policy of deterrence is possible in the context of this absurd, 'unspoken', 'unsaid', 'alleged', Jihad by this mysterious 'Iranian group'?

How can our government and people live with the daily threat of a WMD attack against the US without any kind of policy of response, because we have not identified the enemy in this war? This is ludicrous.

The war on terror is a lie. Someone has to say it soon. Terror is a method, not an enemy. The Iraq war and reconstruction project is not an effective strategy to defeat Islam. Yes, Islam. Pakistan is an adversary who either refuses or is unable to attack Jihadist bases inside its territory. And that is why Osama Bin Laden has not been caught. That is why Mullah Omar is still at large. The Islamic Republic of Iran is an enemy at war with the United States, likewise the PA, Hamas, Islamic Jihad, Hezbollah; and, because the war on terror is a lie, American citizens pay for it everyday, with taxes that do not effectively fight the enemy, by living with the daily threat of WMD terrorism. And to top it all off we have to live with the threat of censorship and alienation if we speak the truth. The situation is not as bad as it is in Europe, but any academic who dares to speak out against Islam must be ready for a fight and professional alienation in certain fields of study.

The war on terror is a lie. Someone must say it, and then let's get on with the reality of fighting Islamic Jihad in all its forms.

The facade must come down.

For reasons that I obviously would be foolish to talk about, let me simply say that the possibility of terrorists hijacking airliners and successfully causing a significant radiation release of any sort is remote in the extreme.

noprisoners, get your friend to attempt to gain access to those buildings.

And be sure to send his widow a nice floral arrangement.

JTF, attacking Pakistan won't deliver bin Laden.

Attacking Iran, on the other hand...

I am not suggesting an attack on Pakistan. I am calling for truth telling in foreign policy.

You're right JTF. The truth is the best policy. But, truth can be very unpleasant.Welcome to the Matrix.

With whom or what are really at war? The answer is obvious. The answer is Islam, Mohammedism, or whatever it is to be called.

As Munro Williams used to say, "The mind denies what is obvious to the senses." (This has become especially true in the last 40 years as psychotic levels of denial have become interpreted as liberated intellect.) What is uncomfortable, or frightening, or inconvenient, or threatening is denied by the mind regardless of how obvious it is to those not inhibited by such reactions, who are liberated from crowd hysteria, or who are disciplined enough to make rational decisions regardless of such reactions. Behold, the emperor wears no clothes, but to the self-deceived mind he is argued to be in magnificent rainments.

Behold, for fourteen hundred years, Islam has slaughtered or conquered all that has been in its path in its determination to impose itself upon the world while those who remain not Islamic are to be forced to pay a non-believers tax, the Jizrah or Jizyah. It has done so subject to opportunity and capability. It converted one fifth of the world by force of brutality. It is the nature of Islam that leaving Islam is punishable by death, and is so enforced in Muslim countries --as is an insult to Mohammed. Anything less than total worship and subservience is an insult.-- Robert L. Kocher

*LOL*

yeah dude. Fellow heros who've chosen the red pill over the blue one, we've a long and ardous struggle ahead of us. We're lucky, a majority in America unlike most of EU and canuckistan chose the red pill (voted red at least) over blue poison...

Voletti,

I love my Country (Canada, not canuckistan). Yes I have a sense of humor and canuckistan is fine as long as you're joking around.

Like you red voters in the U.S., there were many Canadians voting red. Unfortunately, there are more boneheads here than there are in the States.

It's truly unfortunate that we aren't fully supporting your anti-terrorist efforts. If Canada does not change it's course, you (the U.S.A.) may have to destroy us in order to save us (and by extension, yourselves). By that, I mean, our beliefs that all cultures can get along together with no problems is giving the Islamists a great foothold hear.

We now have Islamic telivision Al Jazeera and also the province of Ontario has allowed the laws of Sharia a foothold in that province.

Most cultures can and do get along fine, but the ones enslaved by Islam are not willing to play along. There is going to be much trouble before Canadians wake up.

I really don't know what to do. Something needs to be done before it gets worse (and it is most definately going to get worse).

God bless the U.S.A. and it's warriors.

The point of the article is the threat of an aircraft strike against a nuclear power facility. The odds of any significant radiation release from this type of attack are small. The rounded design of containment shelters would deflect much of the impact from a direct impact by an aircraft--and that's assuming a nervous and inexperienced pilot could guide a large plane against such a relatively small target. Finally, even were the cooling system damaged to the point where meltdown would commence (highly unlikely), there wouldn't be a major release of radiation. What this points out, however, is the fear value of radiation in any form--most people are irrationally frightened by the specter of nuclear release.

Yeah, I saw that, too. The picture showed the Seabrook, NH power plant. I used to live practically next door but I'm still in damn good closeness to it. I'm not sure they can hijack planes from Canada and actually do this. Unfortunately it's the MSM who keeps bringing this stuff up and I wish they wouldn't do that and give them ideas for they already have enough ideas. Based on bin Laden's tape, it seems to be Saudi Arabia is next on the list. I prefer they do it over there than here anyday. Keep the mess over there, not on our soil.
