From the LA Weekly (thanks to LGF), a story called "White Muslim," about Charles Vincent, an American convert to Islam. As I have remarked about converts many times, this man approached the Qur'an and Islam without preconceptions. Why does he think what he does about jihad?
Dressed as he is in an Islamic-style tunic and a white kufi, or cap, with an untrimmed ginger beard sprouting from his handsome, classically Californian face, Vincent may look unusual, but he certainly isn't alienated, or for that matter, alone. In the United States, there are estimated to be roughly 80,000 white and Hispanic Muslims, along with a far greater number of African-American ones. In France, there are perhaps 50,000, according to a secret government intelligence report leaked to the French newspaper Le Figaro. (A Muslim resident of the racially mixed Belleville district of Paris told me that out of every 100 Muslims one sees there, 30 are former French Catholics.) The report stated that conversion to Islam "has become a phenomenon [in France] that needs to be followed closely." A recent study commissioned by Jonathan ("Yahya") Birt, a Muslim convert and the son of a former director-general of the BBC, put the figure in Britain at a more modest 14,000, and there are similar estimates for Spain and Germany. More people are converting on all sides of the globe -- from Australia and New Zealand to Sweden and Denmark. At the moment the number of converts can only be called a trickle, but it is steady and gathering in power...."Why shouldn't you listen to music?" I asked.
"Because it takes up valuable space in my mind, space I need for the entire Koran rather than Michael Jackson's 'Beat It' or something nonsensical like that. These things are not going to benefit me in the hereafter, they will only be held against me."
Mateen Siddiqui, vice president of the Michigan-based Islamic Supreme Council of America (ISCA), a Sufi Muslim organization that has many white adherents and keeps tabs on fundamentalist Islam in America, calls that "a very hardcore, Taliban-style belief. I wouldn't say it's militant, but it's very extreme. The problem is it can often lead to a militant attitude in the future." According to the ISCA, the majority of mosques in the United States have been taken over by radicals who preach the dour, restrictive version of Wahhabi Islam financed and championed by Saudi Arabia.
Funny. When I said that in talks at the University of North Carolina and Oakland University in Michigan, the Muslim students in the audience were incredulous. It was as if they had never heard of Saudi Arabia.
"If you go to an ordinary Islamic country," Siddiqui told me, "they don't act like that. Most Muslims watch TV, take pictures, listen to music . . . The same is true of a lot of the people who go to the mosques in America. The people who go to them are normal Muslims, but the people who run them are very strict. If a new Muslim comes, they will grab him and indoctrinate him."...Vincent denies that he has been manipulated by anyone in the mosques he goes to, or by his Arab acquaintances. On the contrary, he says that he and his Moroccan friend discovered -- rediscovered in the latter's case -- Islam and the Koran together. Nor does he think much of Sufism. "Be careful of that stuff," he told me in his kindly way when the topic came up during one of our first conversations, a frown furrowing his brow. "I'll just give you a little example of what I mean by that. The Prophet Muhammad, salla 'alayhi wa sallam [peace and blessings be upon him], anything that came out of his mouth was recorded, just like you're recording now. And he said this religion will break up into 73 sects, and all of them are going into the hellfire except for the one on the true path of true religion. So when it comes to Sufism, it's not anything I would consider to be . . . For me, I can't consider that being any part of an article about Islam."
"So you consider yourself a Sunni Muslim?"
"I would say I was a Muslim following the one true path."...
As we headed down FDR Drive, with the East River streaming past us on our left, the conversation turned to politics. It was a week or so before the presidential election, but Vincent said he had no intention of voting. Democracy is based on compromise, he told me, and Islam does not compromise. If he could vote for an Islamic state, he would, with Saudi Arabia as the model. Asked about Taliban-era Afghanistan, he replied cautiously that he didn't know enough about it to comment. It is his fervent hope that early next year, in the company of a million or so other Muslims, he will be able to go on the haj and circle the black stone at Mecca. "Besides wanting my parents to become Muslim, there's nothing I want more."...
But perhaps there is no need to say anything. When I asked Vincent what he thought about al-Yaqoubi's statement, he answered, with a touch of defiance, that he felt just fine about it. "I do wish the American troops would be defeated," he told me, adding, "I'm a Muslim first, and I just live in this country." (If he could find a bumper sticker that read "AGAINST THE TROOPS," he said, he'd put it on his cab.) And were he ever to find himself in the Middle East, let's say Iraq, would he fight against American soldiers? "If there was a jihad," he replied evenly, "I don't see how I could not join in."

Correction: the Black Stone is not what pilgrims walk around. The Ka'ba is a building, which consists of a single room as I understand it, and various "dignitaries" (like government officials) are taken inside it on occasions. The Black Stone is in another part of the same mosque, and pilgrims are supposed to touch it if they can, but many can't due to the mosque being overcrowded. This may be one reason why Muslims like to do Umrah at other times of the year, rather than Hajj alone.

Osama Bin Laden Appalled Over Michael Jackson Member Of Islam

Al Jazeera television has released another Osama Bin Laden video, this one clear proof the Al Qaeda leader is alive, as it deals in a direct way with current headlines.
In the approximately 12 minute video, Bin Laden expresses consternation that Michael Jackson may have joined the Nation of Islam, on the grounds that "someone like him could easily make Muslims look weird, threatening, crazy and dangerous. We don't need guys like that."
Jackson, charged with several counts of child molestation, has, according to media reports, recently joined the Nation of Islam and even hired members of the group to act as his bodyguards.
Bin Laden called Jackson's membership in the group "dangerous for Islam, dangerous for the world and dangerous for all the kids over here on the Afghanistani/Pakistani border." After adding the requisite "Death to America" segment to the video, Bin Laden again stressed that welcoming Jackson "into the fold could really do damage to Islam's PR. I mean, that guy's just scary, you know? I would not let even one of my 45 children near him. What are the average Mr.and Mrs.USA going to think of Muslims now? Before they probably just thought of us as regular folk, you know, like on an episode of 'Leave it to Beaver,' only maybe a little bit swarthier. But now, you know, if that whacko Jacko guy joins they're going to think we're unhinged and they're going to be really, really terrified of us. Thanks a lot, Jacko!"

In short, you can only respect people and their ideology if it treats you with respect. I'm tellin ya, it'll be the New Thing! Cool clothes, exotic names, sanctioned rape & pederasty--what could be more attractive to our younger generation? No drugs/booze or music, though, that could be a deal-breaker. Don't put it past Islam to relax the rules a little like they did for terrorists.
This is what happens when you forget your own people's faith. Something has to fill the void and Islam may be it.

Here is one salient point made by an D.C. imam:
"We have a very big problem in the Muslim world. The problem is ignorance. We don't know Islam," says Muhammad Al-Hanooti, a Palestinian-born imam and a leading American-Islamic scholar who consults for groups such as the Muslim American Society, a national group based in Falls Church. "Unfortunately, you can hardly find a Muslim who spends hours studying the Koran," Mr. Al-Hanooti says.
Reading this quote, one problem of islam in the US (and this may extend to all other liberal democratic countries as well) is that the bulk muslim immigration to this country came upon the rise of fundamentalism and increased anti-Americanism in their native countries, such that many of the current U.S. muslims have followed blindly a religion they were born into and never gave it much thought except for the automaton performance of calendar based religious rituals (much like many Jews and Christians I know). In fairness to this group, these muslims may not share the current fundamentalism of their native country for that may be the very reason they left. I came to know many Persians (Iranians) in Los Angeles who escaped before the rise of the fundamentilst ayatollahs for whom islam is as much a part as their life as my religion is to mine, that is reluctantly acknowledged upon "holy days."
Now before any of you scorch your keyboard with rants of my being an apologeticist, let me add more quotes from the end of the cited article.
"Kamal Nawash, founder and president of the D.C.-based Free Muslim Coalition Against Terrorism, has criticized Muslim leaders in the United States and abroad for not aggressively opposing terrorism. His nonprofit group seeks to eliminate support for Islamic extremism and terrorism, and advance secularism in the Muslim world by supporting Islamic-reformation efforts. "The Muslim leadership has not done nearly enough to combat extremism and terrorism," Mr. Nawash says. "We [Muslims] have to take the lead in the war of ideas to combat terrorism." "It's not enough just to say, 'These other people are deviants, and they are misinterpreting Islam. It's not us,' " says Mr. Nawash, 34, a Lebanese who immigrated to the United States at age 9 and has become a naturalized citizen. "Maybe the accusation that we have a problem with terrorism is true. At a minimum, maybe it's true that we are not doing enough."
Mr. Aalim-Johnson says "terrorists have hijacked the religion." "We have to go and teach people about what the religion is, what it looks like. Most of us, as Muslims, are more annoyed [by terrorists] than you are," he said. "You wish you could go and shake these people and say, 'What the hell are you doing? Where did you get this from?'"
I think the JW group would answer that last question: it's the Koran, stupid! If Al-Hanooti says its imams are not studying the Koran, then muslims in the U.S., no matter how good their intentions, will be able to give an answer to Aalim-Johnson.
For muslims to exist in the western liberal democracies, it will take nothing more than a great schism such as occured between the Roman pope and the Eastern patriach in the eleventh century. A schism of fundamental dogma between the fundamentalist islamic states and the islam of the western liberal democracies needs to occur.

UK Action Alert: Educating Robert
Tonight I had the pleasure of (almost) hearing a denunciation of Jihadism on BBC Radio 4 (The UK’s ‘station of record’). Robert Killroy Silk (an MEP and erstwhile BBC chat show host) was on the panel of ‘Any Questions’ a weekly discussion program.
He made some pretty strong statements against Arab states, same kind of stuff that got him fired from his role as a BBC presenter. He was then invited to declare that all cultures are equal which he refused to do (referring to the treatment of women in the Middle East). At the last moment he blinked. When the sycophantic presenter almost begged him (listen for yourself!) to say that it is not about Islam he lapsed into some moral equivalence.
Still this was one of the clearest challenges to the PC thinking about Islam that I’ve ever heard on Radio 4. Judging by the hysterical reaction of some in the audience it almost gave them a heart attack. We need more of this!
Muslims in the audience came up with the usual stuff. ‘You don’t understand the concept of Jihad’ and ‘Islam is a peaceful religion’ (Which the dhimmis nervously applauded!) You could tell they were rattled though.
Regardless of what you think of Killroy’s politics, he needs to be encouraged to keep saying these things. He also needs to be nudged to cross the last PC frontier: Identifying Islam as part of the problem. Something he declined to do tonight, but which he came very close to!
Again you don’t have to be his greatest fan, but remember: This is a guy that knows how to grab and keep media attention. He has to potential to be a key leader in the anti-Jihadist struggle in the UK.

An Open Memo to Charles Vincent and all others contemplating "converting" to Islam:
Islam has no factual basis on which to rest. It is entirely THEORETICAL whether Al-lah exists, or if the Islamic view of the afterlife exists--or for that matter whether ANY afterlife exists. It is theoretical at best that the Qur'an was the result of 'divine' revelations to Muhammed. You cannot authenticate any such claims made by Islam. They are therefore open to debate--and doubt.
There is a difference believing something is true and knowing it is true for a reality. Americans celebrate Christmas on December 25th of each year, and that is a fact. Believing there is a Santa Claus is another matter.
Therefore you have no way of personally knowing whether ANYTHING in the Qur'an is true. Its teachings might very well NOT be true at all. I would personally like you to show me one of those talking trees and/or talking rocks mentioned in the Qur'an that ultimately betray the 'cowardly' Jews to Islamic 'justice'. Talking rocks and talking trees are both mentioned in the Qur'an. And they obvously do not exist. Yet millions have bought it. And some killed others --with conviction--because they bought it.
In all probability you would not spend your life savings on a business scheme whose outcome of promised success could not in any way be verified or authenticated in any way. But would you participate in a murderous global JIHAD OR HOLY WAR that would slaughter millions of human beings? You, sir, are gambling with your soul. And you could lose it.
Just suppose for a minute that what you read in the Qur'an is FALSE. Imagine if the Arabs have propagated a vast fraud to make themselves prominent in history and global politics. Would you still feel compelled to participate in jihad?

The "Black Stone"* IS what Muslims on haj DO walk around, since it is embedded in a corner of the Ka'aba 'building', and they all circle that as they follow Allah's ineffable command to:

*This mysterious "black stone" is supposedly a pre-Islamic meterorite that the polytheistic tribes of the (pre-Saudi) Arabian desert fought among themselves for 'divine' posession of. And, at some point, it was smashed to pieces by one clan, and then 'glued' back together by another. (Although, they are not sure if is really the same stone, or a merely 'symbolic' substitute to 'calm the peasants'.)
I guess a stone falling from the sky was pretty impressive stuff to people who thought that the firmament only extened up about a mile, and then housed djinnis and angels if you went any higher.

I've wondered about that very thing myself. I also wonder how many of them are converting to Christianity. I know a few but I'm sure there are many more.
Some comment on "converts" and the degeneration of Islamic civilization (since Hugh, in DW, raised the issue of Islam's debt to the Dhimmi communities).
Perhaps the ultimate problem with Islam is that the Qu'ran is fundamentally two things:
(1) An attempt by Muhammad to "unify" Abrahamic religion by poasting together a hash of folklore, misconcpetion, and shopworn heresies.
(2) A military manual on the conquest of Arabia.
The former accounts for why Islam is intellectually bankrupt; and why Ibn Rushd had to posit a two-storey epistemology of knowledge of the creation (found by reason) and of the creator (by revelation),a division of knowledge which both Moses ben Maimon and Thomas Aquinas, interestingly enough, denied. My guess is that familiarity with both the Qu'ran and the Old and New Testaments, plus review of the then-available non-biblical sources on early Christianity and intertestamental-Rabbinic Judaism has to show Islam in a very poor light.
The latter accounts for why Islam is either at war or in decadence. The military-political aspect of Islam's sourcebook makes it impossible for it to ever creatively accept minority status without coming into violent friction with others.
My guess is that Vincent and people like him, being told that God is dead, went out and sought another that might be a little more lasting than the liberty, equality, fraternity, the general will, the dialectic, historical necessity, chance and necessity, and various determinisms which post-Christians have erected as idols.
People like Vincent and Wacko Jacko are uprooted individuals adrift. They're the children of a culture that decided it would celebrate the bizarre and rebellious; so they themselves made careers of rebellion and eccentricity. Frankly, I think Islam is now "fashionable" for the same reason homosexuality is--liberal opinion is trying oh so har to "atone" for how it once viewed such things.
People do go in and out of Islam--like everything else. There are African-American, Euro-American, and Hispanic-American "in-and-outers" who return to Christianity as well as "swarthy" people (a lot of Mideasterners could class as "white" or "black" according to the canons of your vintage-1960 Anthropology book) who leave Islam, too.
Anyone contemplating joining Islam needs to seriously look at the concept of 'kaffir' of 'kufir' (spelling??) and 'infidel'. Then look carefully at the Islamic attitude towards the Kaffir and the Infidel. It won't take long to recognize the contempt with which Kafir and Infidels are held in the Islamic mindset. One of the characteristics of a cult is to develop a contempt in the convert for the people he associated with in the past.
I found the part about this guy wanting to have his parents join Islam interesting. He is obviously a little uncomfortable about his parents being Najis or Unclean just because he found this new religion.
Wake Up Man!! The parents who loved and nurtured you are just as clean as they ever were and they are certainly just as good as they ever were.
He should think carefully. Does he really want to hold so many old friends, family, and aquaintances in such contempt. Did the country that provided him with the ability to chose a religion and lifestyle become something to hate. There are plenty of enlightened Non-Najis clean muslims in the hovels of Dhaka and Karachi and other Islamic Paradises.
I am a proud infidel and I will make my decision about people on the 'content of their character' (to quote Martin Luther King) and not the type of religion they follow. I would ask Charles Vincent or any other convert if they are ready to join the world of hating the 'other' guy. This seems to be a central point of Islam.

What I really meant to add was that Mr. Vincent should go try these places out and see if they are actually cleaner than the culture that nurtured him. Should people and places be considered najis or unclean based on whether they are islamic or not? This is a bigotry that one must swallow to be a muslim.
