CAMP FALLUJAH, Iraq - American commanders are fully aware that Iraq's insurgents exploit their policy of employing locals on U.S. military bases but insist the practice will not stop, though some security measures may be tightened.The vulnerability of the American stance was exposed on Dec. 21, when an Iraqi suicide bomber dressed in a military uniform detonated his explosives at a mess hall at Forward Operating Base Marez in Mosul, killing 22 people including 14 U.S. servicemembers.
Since then, security has been tightened at chow halls in some camps, with military guards demanding proof of identification more often and not allowing backpacks. Officials say they are constantly reviewing procedures to make sure such an attack doesn't happen again, but insurgents infiltrating camps is unavoidable.
"They're trying to infiltrate the base as much as possible, taking pictures, videos drawing diagrams, grabbing people who are coming off base to intimidate them into giving them locations where different facilities are located on the base or torturing them until they do tell them," said Lt. Col. Dan Wilson, deputy for current operations for the 1st Marine Division. "We know it is active and ongoing."...
One aspect the insurgents also appear to have exploited is the American desire to give Iraqi security forces a greater role, to treat them more as equals and to try to get them to do their jobs on their own, without U.S. supervision.
While Iraqis who work on bases are vetted, Americans acknowledge that they don't do security checks on Iraqi forces on base, instead leaving that task to their Iraqi counterparts.
"We don't do a systematic vetting process on Iraqi security forces, their government that does that," Wilson said. "There's a certain trust factor that goes along with the Marines working with them."...
American troops on the bases express widespread distrust about the Iraqis that work there, and have remarked that they all believe contractors are relaying intelligence back to insurgents on the outside.
But that won't lead to a change in policy, said Marine spokesman Lt. Lyle Gilbert.
"Contracting locals helps the economy. That's something we want to do," Gilbert said. "We want the Iraqi economy to flourish. We want them to have jobs, to have money, to get back on heir feet."
Gilbert said that closing off bases to Iraqis would be like "everybody in America closing their doors in fear and not going anywhere."

When I heard of that attack, and saw the video images, it made me cry. All those young lives snuffed out while just sitting down to eat. Our objective will be to spot these intruders with the aid of binoculars - telescopes - night vision scopes, and inform the U.S. Border Patrol of the location of the trespassers so that border patrol agents can intercept and detain them. Generally, we will not be confronting the illegal aliens. The tentative area of observation will be a 30-mile stretch of forested highlands, and lowlands along the San Pedro River.
I hope to bring serious media and political attention to this event. It will tune the American people into the shameful fact that 21st century minutemen/women have to help secure US borders because the US government REFUSES to provide our dutiful U.S. Border Patrol and Bureau of Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) with the manpower and funding required to do so.
I estimate the cost per person (for 30 days) could be as high as $3,500, depending on your travel, meal and lodging arrangements. I intend to stay the entire 30 days of this mission, however, that length of time is not a requirement to volunteer.

15 million is about the cost of a single jet fighter, or one of Michael Jackson's lawsuits, or a small office building in central NYC. It's probably about 10% of what America spends everyday on pet food. I am not saying you should give more, or less, but it really isn't worth getting hot under the collar about. For your government it is just a bit of loose change. If you want to save a thousand times more, pull out of Iraq! All of NATO piled into Afghanistan after your 9/11, and a whole group of countries followed the US into Iraq. Billions of foreigners were outraged at what happened in New York - and this is the way you talk about Europe, the rest of the world, and a crummy 15 million? Shame on you. I firmly believe you don't speak for the average American though. I think the EU donation came from the central EU coffers, but then many other nations made independent donations, even Greece sent a plane full of goods, so I think you will find (all in all) that the European donation will end up larger than the US donation. Not that it matters. The EU does not function like the USA, wherein the constituent states stay out of foreign affairs. It is not a central government. If you read that the "EU" has done this or that, that doesn't mean that is the full response of all the members.
America does get blamed for everything, most of it, I must admit is unfair. I spent years in South America, and met more Communists than I care to remember. They blamed their poverty on the fact that their governments did business with the USA. They also blamed Cuban poverty on the fact that the USA refused to do any business with Cuba! Fuzzy logic or what? I think this same problem is inherent amongst countless millions of young Muslims. They really do believe that Iraq was invaded for its oil, as an excuse to kill Muslims, or whatever. Nobody thanks you for the billions you spend and the lives you lose - and more important than thanks, there are no results to show for it all.
I think the USA really did go into Iraq with the best of intentions. But as they say: "the road to hell is paved with good intentions". This is going to go the same way as your military involvement in Lebanon in the 80's and Somalia in the 90's. I think that either the solution is genocide of Muslims (and then they would really have something real to bitch about) or isolationism. This half-way-house of petty skirmishes and long-term occupations is just helping the extremists.
The sad thing is, after this mess, Iraq will become another Iran and you're probably going to build some ugly black monument in Washington DC, with 2,000+ names on it of fine young men and women that died for nothing. I believe the Viet Nam memorial has a nearby statue of some soldiers trudging through a paddy field, where most of your troops met their demise. I wonder if the Iraq memorial will have a nearby statue of a group of soldiers eating at a table, or stopping a truck at a roadblock.

I would sacrifice my life to defend the United States against its enemies (we all know who those are). I did serve in the US armed forces during war time--to defend the United States.
Neither would I want to send a son or daughter of mine into harm's way to make life easier for the Iraqi people.
If the leadership of our armed forces continues in this vein, we will--as has happened many times in the past--build up entities that will one day come and bite us in the a**s.
As for winning the war against--ah--"terror" (as we cannot call our enemy by its real name), it doesn't look so good, while we care more for those who support or do nothing or little to stop this enemy than for ourselves.

Then, about 100 years ago, a strange thing happened, one of their own people converted all the tribes in the space of a few decades, and then translated the bible into Nicobarese. The conversion was completely indigenous and free willed).
It seems as if about 5% of the Nicobarese have been wiped out and about half are now homeless. These are special people as Christianity is rare in this corner of Asia.
The Nicobar Islands belong to India simply because they were part of the British Empire, although the Nicobarese have no linguistic, cultural or racial links with mainland India.
The islands are completely off-limits to the outside world and the Indian government has done nothing to develop the local economy. The last time I looked, there was not a single site on the internet dedicated to these beautiful and interesting islands.

Hey, feralee, I think just about everyone who posts here is discouraged. Many of us recognize that our government is so infested with Leftist P.C. that it is paralyzed in the face of problems such as this. If we lose this war, it will be because the Kantian Left has won, just as it did in Korea and Vietnam. If that happens, it will be extremely difficult to gain the support of the American people for another war--we don't like throwing our soldiers into a Waring Blender and pushing the "on" button.
Nobody loves a loser.
Already, many people recognize the seriousness of the problem, and that is, that the government is not able to carry out its constitutional duties to protect us from enemies, foreign and domestic. Here and there, private citizens are filling in the holes, as illustrated by the post by Catherine with the invitation from a group concerned about the invasion of our country by illegals.
In a way, I'm glad I'm old; with any luck, I'll not live long enough to see the Camelot that is the United States be just another flash in the pan of human history.

Folks, there are all kinds of natural disasters waiting to happen; he will survive best who relys most on reason to find solutions to the problems that arise from these unavoidable occurances.
That leaves the Muslims in a pretty hopeless place. Since Allah creates each moment separately from any other moment on a whim, and since nothing that happens in one moment has any causal relationship to anything that happens in the next moment, no prediction is possible (to them).
Just the same, I'd prefer it if we didn't have to wait for some natural disaster, like the supervolcano in Yellowstone, to happen to bring us to our senses.
By the way, the earthquake that produced the tsunami was very near the site of the ancient supervolcano "Toba" that blew its top about 86 or so thousand years ago, and killed all but about 5000-10,000 people on the planet.
Yellowstone isn't quite as big as Toba, but it's plenty big. The problem is that it had been found to have a fairly regular periodicity, and the time's about up.
Yeah, cubed, it is quite discouraging, this Iraq "war". I put the word in quotes because it's not allowed to be a proper war. An ugly, no-holds-barred war, which is the only way to do battle, if you have any hopes of winning. The insurgents are doing it the right way. No holds barred. And they get kudos from the anti-war crowd, who sit there salivating with gleeful hope that the US and its allies are crushed. Nyah, nyah, nyah, they screech like baboons. Yet our guys get dragged over the coals for "torture", and they have to hold back while being pummelled from so-called "holy" places, and follow suicidal rules and regulations, dotting every 'i' and crossing every 't' before they even think of making a move. The media is eagerly capturing every moment, anxious to catch a soldier not being very nice, so they can blow it all out of proportion on networks across the world with self-righteous indignation. I hate it. I just hate that our troops are hobbled in this manner. The rest of the world disapproves anyway. The Islamic world loathes us whether we're in Iraq or not. So go for it. Do what you have to do, to hell with world opinion!
I just don't think it's worth it. With WW2, we had people who were at least halfway normal to rescue from tyranny. In the Middle East, we've got brainwashed followers of a death cult who hate our guts and have been demonizing and denigrating us since they were in diapers. They're not worth the sacrifice. If it all eventually works, and Iraq miraculously becomes semi-stable, I can't help but think it'll be short-lived. If they won't be at each other's throats within a yar, I'd be surprised. And in will come someone similar to Saddam, or an Ayatollah, with a big grudge against the US and its allies.

OK now, this is just too much. To see my idol, cubed, give in to defeatism is just beyond the pale for me. YOU are the one who has often inspired and filled me with hope! "Reality always wins in the end." I comfort myself with those words, and with many others that you've posted here and at 6thcolumn.
Please, cubed, don't ever "gladden the heart of the ummah", but continue to inspire US with reason and the hope it [must naturally] engender.

Since matter can neither be created nor destroyed, and the current estimate of the 'age' of the known material [local] universe is about 14-15 billion years, we are all just 'teen-agers', cos-molecularly.
Age is something to 'do not go gentle into'. But hope that telomere research gets some traction soon and at least gets us Back to Methuselah, ASAP. I could use a few thousand years, to start. ("This primate lifespan is killing me!"-)
