Last year, while visiting a friend at Fort Jackson, the largest training base for the American army, located on the outskirts of Columbia, South Carolina, I took a walk around town. The cemetery outside the Trinity Episcopal church, noting down those celebrated names, so many of them Huguenot in origin (I recall reams of Ravenels).
Antebellum mansions, the handful that had escaped the mass destruction inflicted, quite unnecessarily, by Sherman in February, 1865. The magnolias in the garden of the State capitol. The museum, with its early Italian canvases, a legacy of S. S. Kresge, who liked to spread his art wherever Kresge’s stores were to be found – and at his death, one was to be found in Columbia, South Carolina.

And there was the campus of the University of South Carolina which -- now speaking as Senator Foghorn Leghorn –“s I declare has, Suh, the prettiest campus imaginable, with its green, and its South Caroliniana library, and those belles from so many Beauforts who, this being the modern south, without those Vivien-Leigh manors, and manners, are no longer content to study French, dancing and deportment, but these modern young women now come, Suh, I say proudly Suh, these young women come to the University of South Carolina in Columbia to study chemistry, and anthropology, and en-vi-ron-men-tal sciences. Yet, not a quarter-mile from the campus, on one of the thoroughfares, I spotted, on the second-story wall of a nondescript structure housing a Laundromat or fast-food place, a sign about Islam and a local mosque.

It was one of those "Et in Arcadia Ego" moments. Here, even here, where sweet magnolias blossom, round everybody's door, Islam had made its way.

And now we have the tale of what a single determined carrier-out of Da’wa can do in a single school, to his innocent Infidel victims, among the schoolchildren entrusted to his care. Should he be fired, forthwith, for violating the Constitution and carrying out religious instruction in the most aggressive possible way? Of course he should. And what will the ACLU do? Because if it comes to his defense, it should understand that exactly the same kind of behavior will be permitted to Christian teachers with a mission – and the ACLU doesn’t want that kind of thing, now does it? And precisely what are the doctrines of Islam which this man is inveigling his students into, little by little, starting of course with the seemingly-inoffensive Five Pillars of individual worship (shehada, zakat, salat, Ramadan, and hajj)?

The list of what this one determined Da’waist should, however, give pause. If he can do all of that, and if every Muslim is required to conduct Da’wa, not least in order to justify his living in an Infidel society that has not yet been turned into a Muslim one, then we must worry, greatly, about all the other efforts – in schools and at workplaces, in police stations and fire stations, in coffee klatsches and in soup kitchens, in post offices and in a thousand other meeting-places – at Da’wa by a relentless and determined group of people.

And it is interesting to consider the other prong of the Islamic attack on our ways. For who is it who for so long benefited from Saudi and other Arab largesse, and helped to misinform us about the nature of Saudi Arabia, and hence about the nature of Islam? For the hatred for Infidels that is taught in Saudi schools did not start after 9/11/2001, but has always been central to Saudi life, to Saudi sermons, and textbooks, and attitudes. And who was more influential in confusing matters, in hiding Saudi reality, in defending the Saudis, than a series of ambassadors to Saudi Arabia, some of whom promptly went to work for the Saudis after “retiring,” some of whom went to work even while on the job, angling for jobs for their friends as P. R. specialists for the Saudis.

It is at that same Columbia campus, near to that beautiful horseshoe, that the Ernest R. “Fritz” Hollings (no family connection to the “Fritz Hollings” mentioned in “Under Cover” by John Roy Carlson) Center for somethingorother is situated, and among the Great and Good of the South Carolina establishment, one must mention Crawford C. Cook, whose picture is somewhere on the campus, and perhaps listed at the Hollings Center. Hollings, of course, went out with a rant about “Jewish neo-cons” and has been consistently anti-Israel. Crawford Cook was a friend not only to Hollings, but to former Governer of South Carolina John C. West who defended the Saudis even while he was ambassador, and even while he was ambassador arranged for a P.R. job with the Saudis for his friend Crawford Cook. It is a tight little world, the world of Columbia politics, and West, Cook, Hollings, and others made Washington just a little safer for the Saudis.

So instead of the Horseshoe, think of a triangle. There is the Sunni Triangle, where American soldiers are being asked to fight and die because the government in Washington is still engaged in the Light-Unto-the-Muslim-Nations folly instead of realizing the war is a war of self-defense against Islam, and the best way to conduct that war is to do nothing to prevent the Muslim peoples from realizing that it is Islam itself that is responsible for the political, economic, social, and intellectual failures of Muslim societies – and then, perhaps, Ataturk-like, the more level-headed among them will work, quietly, to constrain (for there is no reforming) Islam.

And then there is the triangle in Columba: this local Muslim, working his relentless Da’wa on innocent schoolchildren, the well-paid and well-connected who used their political power and influence (West, Cook, Hollings) to muddy the waters when it came to the nature of Islam and the nature of Saudi Arabia, and the third part of that triangle – the young Americans training to go to war, but the war they train to fight at Fort Jackson will do nothing about the Cooks and the Wests on the one hand, those who curried favor, directly or indirectly, with Saudis and other potential Arab paymasters, and the local pusher of Islam in the schools. Both are dangerous, both must be stopped – at the low end, and at the upper end.

And those young Americans, especially the Reservists and National Guardsmen, who signed up to defend their homeland, in a case of absolute necessity, should not be sent to Iraq on what is now a fool’s errand (if American soldiers are to be used as a cold-blooded instrument of policy, even of misguided policy, the regular army is that instrument), , should be kept at home to educate themselves, and then others, and to watch vigilantly over both those who conduct Da’wa, and those who sell their offices and their influence – and one hardly knows which side of the Jihad-push – the paid propagandists and apologists, or the promoters of Da’wa – are more dangerous. But they are certainly more dangerous, here and in Europe, than the local Muslims in the Sunni triangle, whom the Shi’a and Kurds, if better armed, will be perfectly capable of holding in check themselves, without any further loss of American life. .

Meanwhile, this tourist guide to Columbia ends on a dendrological note: the trees in the Congaree Swamp, the last large-scale stand of primitive uncut trees in the United States, I say Suh, is certainly worth the visit for the Shagbark (Carya ovata) and the Sugarberry (Celtis laevigata) and the Water Locust (Gleditsia aquatica) and a thousand others standing as still as the Standing Stones of Callanish, and awaiting your visit. And so are the tiny churches, each more adorable than the next, that dot the side of the road as you make your way to the Congaree Swamp from Columbia, and here is the African Methodist Episcopal Zion Church right here, with its promised sermon – “I Am My Bro’s Keeper” -- which is a theme that appeals.

The Sleeping World Is Awakening To The Dangers Of Islam

This past week, I have received many responses from Muslims concerning my two most recent columns: ''Followers of Islam: Can You See the Blood on Your Hands'' and ''Here Comes the Arab/Muslim Outrage.''

In one breath, some the writers would call themselves ''intellectuals'' and then accuse me of being a Jew when I put tough questions to them that they could not answer. They maintained that as an American, I just was not intelligent enough to understand Islam. The mistake these ''intellectuals'' made is believing that I have any intention of ''understanding'' Islam.

It has taken me since 9/11 to realize that civilized humans cannot understand Islam. I am just overjoyed and somewhat relieved that the world is finally waking up in time to see the rabid dog coming its way disguised as Islam.

If Bin Laden has done one good thing in his wretched life, it was to poke a stick in the eye of the world by bringing his radical beliefs forward and urging his followers to commit violent acts. It has taken some time for people to begin taking a look at Muslims in their own areas, but it is happening. The French and the English are beginning to ask themselves, ''When did this happen? When did 6 million Muslims get here and what are they planning to do?''

Approximately 33% of the world is Christian and 20% is Muslim, based on figures for the year 2000. The number of Muslims is growing at an alarming rate. Muslims immigrated to peaceful, mostly Christian countries in Europe where they had large families that were reasonably safe from the ravages of their own strict religious teachings. At least these Muslims were safe until the radical element migrated from the oppressive Middle Eastern countries and began exerting its power over the masses and started menacing the indigenous populations that took Muslims in and welcomed them over the years. The mind-control of the clerics over the average Muslim is frightening and total.

This problem is most notable in the smaller European countries such as the Netherlands and Sweden, where a backlash against Islam is growing because of the strict Islamic laws forbidding mingling with the non-Muslim citizens of a country. In short, Muslims do not fit in. They are not allowed to fit in. The religious leaders lose their total control of the people if those people are allowed to see and experience the freedom that others enjoy. This is why Islam loathes democracy. Democracy steals the power of the Islamic leaders. It gives the people the right to think for themselves and thinking people might start to question their laws. Free people will question the absolute authority and power of the Islamic leaders over every aspect of their lives from birth to often violent death.

These days, it seems that anyone who speaks out against Islam runs the risk of being murdered, as in the case of filmmaker Theo Van Gogh who was shot, stabbed, and then had his throat slit by a radical Muslim in the Netherlands. Van Gogh had made documentaries exposing the brutality directed at women under Islam. Now, mosques and Muslim schools have been burned and the normally peaceful Dutch are considering closing their borders at the very least and perhaps even expelling Muslims from their country. As one Dutch citizen said on a blog, ''This country is a free country but we can’t even speak anymore without wondering if some Muslim will murder us.'' The hate and unrest towards the followers of Islam is growing. It is just a rumble now, but it will get louder as the killing and bombing continues across Europe.

A recent report on Fox News showed the hostility growing between the Swedes and their Muslim population. There are Muslim areas where firefighters and emergency personnel will not enter without a police escort because they will be attacked. Firefighters attempting to put out a fire in a mosque were stoned. The anger between these two forces in Sweden is growing and the most liberal country in Europe is contemplating the same action as the Netherlands. It seems Muslims feel their neighborhoods are not a part of Sweden anymore but theirs, to do with as they see fit. The Swedish government does not see it that way. In those pockets of Islamic rule, poverty is common, unemployment is high, and the clerics foment hate and point fingers of blame on the evil West for Muslims' lot in life.

In France, which has the largest Muslim population in Europe, Islamic clerics openly troll the streets seeking restless young men to indoctrinate and send out to kill for Islam. They weed out the weaklings by having them view videos of the actual torture and beheadings of human beings complete with the screams of pain and all blood and gore of a nightmare. They watch Islamic ''snuff films.'' This is what will be expected of them as ''warriors'' of Allah.

Here in the United States we have a different set of problems. America is just too large for Islam to overpower by reproduction. It has also been impossible to isolate its followers from the American population and American Muslims are far less likely to follow the path of death and destruction. Here, they take a different tact.

Radical Islam is rampant in the prisons, converting the worst of the worst so that when they leave prison they are unleashed on society as pre-programmed, radical Islamic killing machines. On the outside they appear as average Americans which allow them to move about the country unencumbered and overlooked. These killing machines wait for their orders to kill and terrorize, cared for and protected by the radical Islamic element within our own borders.

Muslims live in the past where they had their glory days of conquest and power. They often refer to the Crusades, which ended around 1300, as if they happened last year. I am constantly reminded of Wounded Knee and American slavery. Wounded Knee took place in 1890 and slavery ended in the 1860s.

Muslim writers love to point out the Spanish Inquisition, which was an over-reaction to the conquests of Islam in Spain and was just as much political as religious. The Inquisition officially ended in 1834. What they fail to mention is that it was not only Muslims that were persecuted, but Jews and Protestants as well. Muslims always see themselves as the only victims of injustice in the world. Muslims also fail to mention that the Pope tried to intervene and stop the Inquisition but was unable to exert his power on the political machine.

We Catholics look at this period in our history with shame, not pride. Belief in God or Jesus cannot be forced on someone; it must come from the heart. Forced conversion is not done out of love, but fear. Islam can control one's body, but it cannot control one's thoughts. Converts that are forced will not stay with Islam. They will leave it at the first opportunity.

This is knowledge that has escaped the Islamics. As they condemn the Spanish Inquisition, Islam is doing the same right now in countries such as Sudan. What Muslims are doing in Sudan is far worse than the Spanish Inquisition. Humanitarian groups estimate that since 1983, an estimated 2 million people have died from war and related famine in Sudan at the hands of the Islamic leaders. Anyone refusing to denounce Jesus and accept Islam is executed. Rape is used as a weapon. It seems that all modern-day Islam needs is a coliseum with some lions. Trapped in the past, Muslims call the coalition forces ''crusaders.''

Since the attack on 9/11 here in the United States, the enemy has been exposed. The havens of safety in Afghanistan and Iraq have been taken from the Islamics. In its fury, Islam has made many mistakes. The attacks in Spain and in Bali and murders in the Netherlands and elsewhere have made the world realize that Islam is not just the enemy of America, but the enemy of the entire free world.

Some people were foolishly saying that America deserved to be attacked but when death came to their shores, they were taken aback. They had welcomed Muslims with open arms and this is how they are repaid for their kindness? Some countries are instituting laws that make our Patriot Act pale in comparison. Threatening tapes released by Bin Laden have had the opposite effect.

Instead of cowering, the world is beginning to look Islam in the eye and say, emphatically and collectively: ''NO! This will not be allowed.'' If it was a final crusade that Islam wanted, they have it.

This story is especially worrisome to me because I live only 50 miles from Columbia, SC, but in a different state. It's still too close for comfort. I read on Town Hall about a year and a half ago that C.A.I.R. was opening a branch in Columbia, and that they were lobbying to change "Judeo/Christian" to "Judeo/Christian/Islamic." Islam had absolutely no influence on American values or culture and still doesn't. I hope Americans will not sit still and allow our culture to be polluted by Islam.

Muslim foes. Kidnappings. How the Barbary Wars foreshadowed things to come

Within days of his March 1801 inauguration as the third President of the United States, Thomas Jefferson ordered a naval and military expedition to North Africa, without the authorization of Congress, to put down regimes involved in slavery and piracy. The war was the first in which the U.S. flag was carried and planted overseas; it saw the baptism by fire of the U.S. Marine Corps—whose anthem boasts of action on "the shores of Tripoli"—and it prefigured later struggles with both terrorism and jihad.

The Barbary States of North Africa—Algiers, Tunis, Morocco and Tripoli (today's Libya)—had for centuries sustained themselves by preying on the maritime commerce of others. Income was raised by direct theft, the extortion of bribes or "protection" and the capture of crews and passengers to be used as slaves. The historian Robert Davis, in his book Christian Slaves, Muslim Masters: White Slavery in the Mediterranean, the Barbary Coast and Italy, 1500-1800, estimates that as many as 1.25 million Europeans and Americans were enslaved. The Barbary raiders—so called because they were partly of Berber origin—struck as far north as England and Ireland. It appears, for example, that almost every inhabitant of the Irish village of Baltimore was carried off in 1631. Samuel Pepys and Daniel Defoe both mention the frightening trade in their writings; at that time, pamphlets and speeches by survivors and escaped slaves had a huge influence on the popular imagination. James Thomson's famously rousing 1740 song Rule Britannia, with its chorus about how Britons "never shall be slaves," was a direct allusion to the Barbary terrorism.

Jefferson was appalled by this practice from an early stage of his career. In 1784 he wrote to James Madison about the Barbary depredations, saying, "We ought to begin a naval power, if we mean to carry on our commerce. Can we begin it on a more honorable occasion or with a weaker foe?" He added that John Paul Jones, the naval hero of the Revolutionary War, "with half a dozen frigates" could subdue the slave kingdoms of North Africa.

The year 1784 saw the American brig Betsey, with her crew of 10, captured by a Moroccan corsair while sailing with a cargo of salt from Spain to Philadelphia. Soon after, Algerian pirates grabbed the Dauphin and the Maria on the high seas of the Atlantic and took their crews captive. The situation was becoming worse because the British fleet had withdrawn protection of American vessels after the former colony declared its independence, and the U.S. had no navy of its own. Secretary of State John Jay decided to do what the European powers did and pay tribute to the Barbary sultans in exchange for safe passage as well as for the return of captured American slaves.

America's two main diplomats at the time were John Adams in London and Jefferson in Paris. Together they called upon Ambassador Abdrahaman, the envoy of Tripoli in London, in March 1786. This dignitary mentioned a tariff of three payments—for the ransom of slaves and hostages, for cheap terms of temporary peace and for more costly terms of "perpetual peace." He did not forget to add his own commission as a percentage. Adams and Jefferson asked to know by what right he was exacting these levies. The U.S. had never menaced or quarreled with any of the Muslim powers. As Jefferson later reported to the State Department and Congress, "The Ambassador answered us that it was founded on the Laws of their Prophet, that it was written in their Koran, that all nations who should not have acknowledged their authority were sinners, that it was their right and duty to make war upon them wherever they could be found, and to make slaves of all they could take as Prisoners."

The posting above makes one realize, with a start, that once the American Republic was founded, the very first military undertaking abroad was against Muslims -- the Barbary Pirates from Morocco to Tripolitania (present-day Libya). The American Marines, and the American Navy, are essentially a result of that decision by Jefferson not to have America ape the Christian powers of Europe that for a long time were content to pay tribute (a kind of "jizya" or protection money) to the Barbary pirates. As the quote from the envoy of Tripoli in 1786 shows, the attack on American shipping was justified because America was an Infidel land, and Infidels were fair play. Americans did not act as Europeans did, and instead built up their forces.

As for the French, they finally discovered that appeasement did not work, and in 1832 French forces conquered Algeria, and caused that land, for the first time since it had been conquered by the forces of Islam, to enjoy 130 years of agricultural prosperity and the fruits of civilization -- which agricultural prosperity, and which fruits of civilization, were entirely imported from Europe, and which have disappeared, along with the French, in the past 40 years. What is left is desolation, a poverty relieved only by the unmerited oil wealth, fanatical Muslim murderers, and a military dictatorship that parcels out money and jobs to the ruling elite.

There was nothing before the French, and there has been nothing after. And that is the way it is, or close to it, in Libya (before the Italians, and after), in Egypt (before the arrival of Lord Cromer, and after 1952, when the ancien regime that still enjoyed the benefits of the Cromer interregnum finally was jettisoned), in Morocco and Tunisia (again, holding on, barely, thanks to the French connection). Without the accident of oil wealth, the Arab and Muslim states would be sinking into nothingness, and their peoples would be regarded with indifference. And that is the condition which non-Muslims should work to bring about again -- not out of cruelty, but out of compassion for those who built Western civilization and who left it as a legacy to which, if we cannot add to it, at least we need not leave it undefended.

Here in France, alas, we are the biggest beneficiaries of the Maghreb's most potent export, and it isn't oil...it's people. Every day, boatloads arrive and the passengers head straight for the welfare offices where they are assigned apartments in the terrible ghettos that surround all French cities...they sign up for their monthly welfare benefits (the apartments are free)...and they extend, man by man and woman by woman, the domain of Islam into Europe. I see it happen before my very eyes. My compatriots just turn and look the other way. And while this is going on, day after day, the delegues in the National Assembly wile away their days inanely debating and passing new laws against "racism", "xenophobia", and "hate speech".

As an example of how depraved the muslim world has become, and since Hugh brought up the subject of Algeria, I'd like to add a annecdote about just how the French conquered the country. In the 1840's, facing a revolt, they brought over an illusionist named 'Houdin', from whom the great Houdinni took his name. Houdin gave the local warlords a demonstration of his "magic" by "catching" a bullet in his teeth.....a standard trick at the time. The warlords were so awestruck, being so backward, that they immediately laid down their arms. If I were muslim I'd be red-faced with shame as concerns this story. Think of it! A WHOLE country captured thanks to a cheap two-bit "magic" trick! You just can't get any dumber than that. Even the Aztecs would have been skeptical, for heaven's sakes!
