In the restive Pakistani province of South Waziristan an Islamist by the name of Abdullah Mehsud commands an estimated 200 fighters. On October 14 Mehsud masterminded the kidnapping of two Chinese engineers working on a dam project for a state-run Chinese company and were taken to a mud hut in the Chagmalai area of the province. From the hut, the kidnappers negotiated with Pakistani forces while receiving telephone instructions from Mehsud. The negotiations ended with a Pakistani assault on the hut during which one of the Chinese hostages was killed. Pakistani forces immediately set out to capture Mehsud, previously unknown to the Pakistani government. The name Abdullah Mehsud, however, did ring a bell halfway around the world at Guantanamo Bay, Cuba where Mehsud had been an inmate until March 2004.Elsewhere, halfway between Pakistan and Cuba, in Denmark, a man named Silmane Haj Abd al-Rahmane told Danish national television on September 26 that he considered Danish soldiers and government officials legitimate targets for terrorist attacks. Abd al-Rahmane also said he plans to travel to Chechnya and join the jihad there. Abd al-Rahmane had also been a detainee at Guantanamo and was released to Danish authorities in the beginning of 2004. When asked about the contract he had signed before being released from Guantanamo in which he had committed to refrain from terrorist activities, Abd al-Rahmane answered: “They can use that contract as toilet paper over in the United States”. This kind of rhetoric is not only heard from freed prisoners living in western democracies.
Shortly before a prisoner exchange between Afghanistan and Pakistan, on September 12, Umara Khan, a Pakistani national who had been jailed in Afghanistan after he had been captured while fighting for the Taliban told a reporter: “I am proud of my decision. I had come to Afghanistan for jihad and I succeeded. I will go to Iraq and continue my jihad against Americans until I defeat them”. In October, Israel Defense Force soldiers arrested Imad al-Kawasme, commander of Hamas in the city of Hebron. Kawasme orchestrated many terrorist attacks including the August 31 suicide attacks on two buses in Beer Sheba. Al-Kawasme had previously been in an Israeli prison between 1994 and 1999. Islamist militants, wholly committed to their ideology, are not reformed by imprisonment.
The fact that Islamist prisoners are repeat offenders is not that surprising when one understands that they are ideological criminals that base their actions on a utopian ideology. Jihad, in their eyes, will eventually lead to a perfect Islamic world, in which Muslims rule by Islamic law. They strongly believe that their actions in support of jihad are not only religiously justified but are in fact a religious duty.

Interview: Geert Wilders-the new Fortuyn?
At last, a politician with the courage to speak the truth openly. And for it, he may be killed. From UPI, with thanks to Ali Dashti:
The Hague, Netherlands, Dec. 1 (UPI) -- Geert Wilders is a marked man. Ever since the slaying of Dutch filmmaker Theo Van Gogh on Nov. 2, the controversial anti-Islam politician has been living in fear for his life. He has had 20 to 30 death threats -- including one offering 72 virgins in paradise to any Muslim who beheads him -- and after the brutal murder of Van Gogh, Dutch police are taking no chances. Wilders is driven to a different safe house every night in an armored car, is permanently protected by a posse of bodyguards and only sees his wife two or three times a week. "Politically it's quite an interesting time, but personally it's terrible," he tells United Press International in a rare interview in the Dutch House of Representatives in The Hague. "Every morning I wake up, wonder where I am and what's going to happen to me. It's like the worst B-movie ever."
Wilders, a 41-year-old former speechwriter with a boyish face and a shock of peroxide-bleached hair, says he is afraid for himself and his family, but refuses to be intimidated by the mountain of death threats. "I will never make any restraints on my freedom of speech. On the contrary, I will be even stronger and tougher saying the things I have to say because if we choose to moderate our voice or stop talking about these subjects, the people who use violence, bullets and knives to get their way will win."
When it comes to Islam and how to deal with the Netherlands' one million Muslims - more than 5 percent of the population -- Wilders certainly pulls no punches. "I have a big problem with Islam but not with Muslims," says the populist politician, who has worked and traveled widely in the Middle East. "I believe that democracy and Islam are totally incompatible and will always be incompatible. There is not one country in the Middle East which is a democracy or is governed by the rule of law."
Like Pim Fortuyn, the openly gay former columnist who rocked Holland's cozy political establishment with his anti-immigration rhetoric before he was gunned down in May 2002, Wilders believes Islam is a "backward religion" that has not gone through the same reformation as Christianity or Judaism and makes no separation between divine and earthly powers. "The political culture of Islam is retarded, and we should keep it as far away from us as possible. It is not our culture and religion, so it should not become dominant in the Netherlands or Europe."
With studies predicting that if present trends continue Muslims will become the majority in the Netherlands' four largest cities by 2020, Wilders says the only way to prevent the native Dutch from becoming a minority in their own land is to halt all immigration from non-Western countries for five years. "The day there are more Muslims than Christians in the Netherlands, I will leave this country whether I am a parliamentarian or not," he said. "I wouldn't feel it was my country any more."
Wilders says he has no problem with the majority of Muslims who are "moderate and have nothing to do with terrorism." But he believes the Dutch government should follow the example of Britain, France and Germany and be "as tough as possible with the growing minority of radical Muslims," which he estimates makes up 10 percent of the Muslim population.
Describing radical Islam as "fascistic" for preaching that "all non-believers have to be eliminated," the outspoken politician says: "I am sure we will lose our country -- if we have not lost it already -- if we don't show who's in charge in the Netherlands, what are the boundaries of our law and what happens when people step over the mark."

2. Spent an inordinate amount of time discussing the
“5 pillars of Islam”.
3. Had an “Orthodox Christian” priest speak to the
class…who informed the students that all religions are
based on Islam.
4. Told students that the United States is a
Judeo-Christian-Muslim” nation…according to the
beliefs of the founding fathers.
5. According to the student, Arastu is a passionate
Muslim and is the sponsor of the school Muslim student
group and was instrumental in having a portion of the
school library set aside for Muslim students to pray
each day. (There are no such accommodations for other
faiths.)
So…we have a CAIR officer, sponsoring the school’s
Muslim student group, bringing in speakers who falsely
claim that the founding fathers desired the fledgling
United States to be a “Judeo-Christian-Muslim
nation”…requiring students to create Muslim
pamphlets…learning about the five pillars of Islam…
Just when do we Americans wake up to the threat of
militant Islam in our public schools? When is
“enough…enough”? What will it take to get parents,
teachers, administrators, and the public to protect
the public schools? We saw with our own eyes the
evil of radical Islam on 9-11…we’re seeing militant
Islam rear its ugly head in Europe on an almost daily
basis, why would we want to allow those problems to
grow and fester here?

FBI reports Guantanamo 'abuse'
Alleged incidents include physical abuse, 'intense isolation'

A reports says the FBI witnessed extreme interrogations of terror suspects at Guantanamo Bay.
WASHINGTON (CNN) -- A memo from a senior FBI counterterrorism official has outlined three alleged cases of abuse in 2002 that FBI agents had become aware of while serving at the Guantanamo Bay Naval Base prison.
The complaints included allegations of a female interrogator grabbing a detainee's genitals and bending back his thumbs and a prisoner being gagged with duct tape.
Another complaint talked of a dog being used to intimidate a prisoner and jailers subjecting the same prisoner to what the FBI official called "intense isolation" in a "cell that was always flooded with light."
The memo was written in July 2004 by Deputy Assistant Director for Counterterrorism Thomas Harrington, and was directed to Maj. Gen. Donald Ryder of the Army's Criminal Investigation Command.
In the first incident outlined by Harrington, an FBI agent was present in an observation room while an interrogation of a detainee was under way. A "Sgt. Lacey" (the memo says her first name is unknown) entered the room and ordered a Marine to duct tape a curtain over the observation window, thereby blocking the view of the interrogation.
On a monitor showing the view of a surveillance camera, the FBI agent saw the sergeant "apparently whispering in the detainee's ear, and caressing and applying lotion to his arms.... On more than one occasion the detainee appeared to be grimacing in pain, and Sgt. Lacey's hands appeared to be making some contact with the detainee," the memo states.
Later it says the Marine who had been in the room came out, and the FBI agent asked what had happened.
"The Marine said Sgt. Lacey had grabbed the detainee's thumbs and bent them backwards and indicated that she also grabbed his genitals. The Marine also implied that her treatment of that detainee was less harsh than her treatment of others by indicating that he had seen her treatment of other detainees result in detainees curling into a fetal position on the floor and crying in pain," the memo states.
The memo included another incident from October 2002 that involved a detainee being "gagged with duct tape that covered much of his head," according to an FBI agent's account. A contractor observing the detainee's interrogation told the FBI agent the detainee "had been chanting the Koran and would not stop."
The final case involves FBI agents allegedly observing a dog being used in an "aggressive manner to intimidate a detainee," who was subject to what the FBI official called "intense isolation" in a "cell that was always flooded with light."
The FBI memo says at least the two first incidents were known to some Pentagon officials as far back as January 2003, when a U.S. Air Force captain referenced them in a timeline concerning the reported use of interrogation techniques.
Interestingly, the memo discusses a debate between FBI and Defense Department officials regarding the treatment of detainees.
The author, Harrington, said he wrote the July 2004 document because he said he had no record that the FBI's "specific concerns regarding these three incidents were communicated to DOD for appropriate action."
An FBI official confirmed the memo was authentic but refused any further comment.
Imprisoned
Many detainees at Guantanamo have been held without charge and without access to attorneys since the camp opened in January 2002. The United States has imprisoned about 550 men accused of links to Afghanistan's ousted Taliban regime or al Qaeda. Four have been charged.
The Associated Press reported it too had seen a letter from Harrington to Maj. Ryder but listed the two alleged incidents involving the same man -- relating to the dog and the period of isolation -- separately.
Ryder is the Army's chief law enforcement officer who's investigating abuses at U.S.-run prisons in Afghanistan, Iraq and at Guantanamo, AP said.
It said that three of the four incidents mentioned in the letter it saw occurred under the watch of Gen. Geoffrey D. Miller, who ran the Guantanamo camp from October 2002 to March 2004 and left to run Abu Ghraib prison.
Last month, Miller was reassigned to the Pentagon, with responsibility for housing and other support operations, AP said.
The ACLU released internal government memos Tuesday that underscore the friction between the FBI and the military over interrogation methods, AP reported. (Full story)
The documents are among 5,000 that the New York-based American Civil Liberties Union received under two Freedom of Information Act requests, the group's executive director, Anthony Romero, told AP.
In one document obtained by the ACLU and seen by AP, an FBI agent recalls Miller wanting to "Gitmo-ize" the Abu Ghraib prison, where photographs surfaced of U.S. troops forcing Iraqi prisoners to strip and pose in sexually humiliating positions. Troops often refer to the U.S. naval base in Guantanamo as "Gitmo."
Commander: Allegations taken seriously
Brig. Gen. Jay Hood, the current commander of the mission in Guantanamo, said allegations of mistreatment and abuse are taken seriously and investigated, AP reported.
"The appropriate actions were taken. Some allegations are still under investigation," Hood told AP.
None of the people named in the letter are still at the base, a Guantanamo spokesman told AP, but it was not clear if any disciplinary action had been taken. The letter identified the military interrogators only by last name and rank, and mentioned a civilian contractor.
Lt. Col. Gerard Healy, an Army spokesman, told AP the female interrogator identified as Sgt. Lacey was being investigated, but the Army would not comment further or fully identify her.
The U.S. military says prisoners are treated in accordance with the Geneva Conventions, which prohibit violence, torture and humiliating treatment. Still, at least 10 incidents of abuse have been substantiated at Guantanamo, all but one from 2003 or this year, AP reported.

WASHINGTON – Was it a bird? Was it a plane? Was it a sign from heaven?
That's what Carrie Devorah wants to know after she inadvertently photographed some mysterious blue light images hovering heavenward while taking pictures of the lighting of the Chabad menorah on the first night of Hanukkah last night on the Ellipse in the nation's capital.
"I took this shot as I was walking to get into place," she said. "For those of you who know D.C., you will recognize the two red lights to the left as being from the Washington Monument. And you will know there is no building that tall to the right of the menorah where the two blue images are."
Are they lens refractions? Are they planes from National Airport? Devorah isn't sure.
"I was fascinated by the stage light silhouetting the menorah," the photographer explained. "So I walked as close as I could – shot with my wide angle lens. ... I noticed the blue images when I returned home."
Devorah says she took three photographs in sequence and the blue images – the mystery lights – are ascending in the sequence.
Devorah was in the news last spring when her brother Chezi was killed in a terrorist bus bombing in Israel.
She wrote about her experience and her loss in a WorldNetDaily commentary.
Still feeling the loss, Devorah takes comfort from the mysterious lights.
"Messiah? A sign? Blue angels?" she asks rhetorically. "All I know is it was fortuitous on a day I was needing to see ... one set of footsteps in the sand, a sign I am being carried."

Bush Gives Palestinians $20 Million

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - The Bush administration on Wednesday announced it was giving $20 million in direct aid to the Palestinian Authority to help it through a financial crisis.
A senior Bush administration official said it hoped the aid would encourage additional donations from other countries "at a time when the Palestinian Authority is in desperate need of budget support to pay its bills, maintain stability and allow it to focus on the larger question of governing."
The Palestinian Authority is facing a severe financial crisis due to falling tax revenues during four years of violence which has paralyzed the Palestinian economy.
The $20 million in direct aid was to be announced during an international donors conference for the Palestinians in Oslo.
It is part of a push to help the Palestinians before their Jan. 9 election, at which President Bush hopes the Palestinians will elect a democratic leader willing to negotiate peace with Israel.
"The upcoming Palestinian elections have made a functioning Palestinian Authority more important than ever," the official said. "The United States has a national security interest in helping to end the ongoing violence and terror in the Middle East and to make progress toward the president's June 24, 2002, vision of peace."
The money is to help pay utility services, including the payment of arrears to Israeli utility companies.

Pakistan: Victim of 'honor punishment' turns to education

On a stifling summer afternoon two years ago, the cotton fields next to Mukhtar Mai's mud-walled home echoed with the brutal gang-rape of the young woman, ordered by an unofficial tribal jury to atone for a crime alleged to have been carried out by her 12-year-old brother, Abdul Shakoor, himself raped by the thugs 12 hours earlier.
That was June 2002. Today, the same fields echo with the innocent chorus of 115 grotty-faced little angels: girls, 3 to 12 years old, in the first school the 3,000 inhabitants of the dustbowl village of Mirwala, 460 kilometers (285 miles) south of Islamabad, have ever seen.
The 12 hours that followed Shakoor's gang-rape scorched Mai's soul forever.
In a perversion of the eye-for-an-eye concept of justice, still enshrined in Pakistani law, the leaders of the local Mastoi clan, falsely calling themselves a tribal jury or jirga, ordered four of their own men to do to Mai what they alleged her brother had done to their sister: rape.
The jury-decreed rape of Mai threw the international spotlight on to the scourge of 'honor' punishments in Pakistan, where, according to records, at least 2,774 women have been killed over the past four years by fathers, husbands, brothers, sons and neighbors accusing them of bringing shame on their families.
It also shed light on the frequency of gang-rapes in the rural belt and the arcane tribal justice system.
In the first six months of this year, 268 women were raped or gang-raped in southern Punjab, according to records. Another 52 women were killed in honor punishments by their husbands, brothers, and fathers. Some 18 women and children were burned in acid attacks, the records show.
Most victims have trouble getting police to hear their tales, let alone file charges, and often their families forbid them from going public.
In the case of Shakoor and Mai, the story began on the long hot day of June 22, when a group of clansmen gang-raped and abducted Abdul Shakoor, and, when confronted by police, defended their actions as retribution for his allegedly "molesting" their sister.
At sunset they sent a delegation to the mosque to direct his father and uncle to bring Mai to them to apologize on behalf of the family, in front of 200 fellow tribesmen, for her brother's "illicit" behavior.
"I went with my father and uncle to the Mastois' place. The jirga leaders said: 'Lay your hand on the Koran, make an oath, and apologize for your brother's sin. I felt safe because they had made a promise to my father and uncle in the mosque," Mai said.
"I did as they said. I apologized in front of all the people of the jirga. Then they snatched the Koran from my hands and the head of the jirga commanded the Mastois: 'Go and do unto her, what her brother did to your sister'."
As the crowd fell away in the deepening summer dusk, Mai's protesting father and uncle were tied up, she was dragged screaming into an unlit hut, and four men took turns raping her....
When she emerged near midnight, her rapists untied her father and uncle. The two men said nothing as they walked her back home through the lanes of the empty village, her clothes in shreds.
"In that 12 hours my life totally changed," Mai said.
"I will never forget that experience. This is a lifetime trauma."
People respond in different ways to any trauma. According to Mai, "some do it with art, some through property or wealth. But I decided, with the help of God, to do something that gives me mental satisfaction and spiritual calm".
So instead of allowing herself to be the victim, she embarked on a mission to bring learning to girls who would otherwise only ever know cotton fields and domestic chores, in the hope that society will change.
"She saved my respect," her mother said later. "We love her even more since the attack."
Mai has turned her fate around from that of victim to facilitator. News of her case was picked up by the national and then the international media and, with the spotlight on her, she received $8,300 in compensation from the government, a massive sum in Pakistan.
This enabled her to become one of the most powerful advocates of girls' education in a country where 72 percent of women cannot read or write, according to Unicef.
"My first priority after that experience was to educate the next generation, because if I had been educated then that attack would never have happened," she said. She would not have allowed it to take place.
Two summers on from that dreadful day, Mai is running Mirwala district's first-ever school for girls, set up with the compensation money, where the village girls study math, science, the Koran, English and the national tongue, Urdu, from early morning to just after midday, six days a week. Boys learn the same lessons at another school she funded about two kilometers (1.2 miles) up the road.
"Life has no charm for me... but I must live until I die. So I want to develop this region, raise awareness and educate the people of this region," Mai said.
"If I can achieve that, then my life will be a success. If there was no ignorance among our people, that incident would never have happened. I want to educate every girl so that if she has a husband who gives her food twice a day but beats her three times, she can leave him and earn for herself and protect herself and will never be helpless."...
Rights activists in Pakistan say honor killings have flourished in the past because killers know they can buy their freedom after a murder conviction.
That is not the case today and nor have Mai's four rapists and their three accomplices been treated lightly. They are on death row, awaiting an appeal.
She is unforgiving.
"I want all of them to die," she said.
"I will never forgive them. They can cut off my limbs, but I will never compromise."

Yvonne Ridley, the British journalist who made international headlines three years ago after her dramatic capture and release by the ousted Taliban regime in Afghanistan, believes her life completely changed to the better, thanks to Islam.
What started out purely as a research about Islam following her release turned into a soul-searching trip that culminated with the firm conviction that Islam is not about oppression or violence, but rather peace, tolerance and understanding, she recently told Malaysia’s English-language The Star newspaper.
Embracing Islam in August 2003, the Sunday Express journalist admitted that she used to “work hard and play hard” and was a “prolific drinker”, but found herself now healthier, happier, and more content.
“And my girlfriends can see this, and they ask: ‘What is this that has changed your life so much?’ And I say it’s Islam. And they say: ‘No, really, what is it?’”
Ridley was in Malaysia last week to raise funds for the UK-based Islamic social service organization Al-Khaaem.
“The whole experience had taught me a very valuable lesson, and that is not to believe propaganda that powerful people in powerful places want us to believe.”
On Sept 28, 2001, Ridley, then 43, was trying to cross illegally into Afghanistan from Pakistan.
She was held captive by the Taliban. She was eventually released in October and went on to write about her unique experiences in a book entitled “In The Hands of the Taliban.”
In the book, she spoke about how she was treated with great respect and courtesy by Taliban members, who used to call her “guest” and “sister.”

Ridley told the Star that she really thanked God that here captors were the Taliban and not the Americans.
“When I look back at my experience now, and I see the shocking images of Guantanamo Bay , and the horrendous images and stories emerging from the Abu Ghraib prison , I thank Allah I was captured by the most evil and brutal regime in the world and not by the Americans.”
Ridley, as an anti-war activist at the time, recalled how the US intelligence sent a dossier to Taliban alleging that she was a spy to silence her anti-war movement.
“Had I been shot or executed, this would have helped justify the bombing of Afghanistan. It would have further demonized the Taliban. I was told by one intelligence officer: ‘Don’t take this personally. It wasn’t against you,’” she said laughingly.
In an interview with IslamOnline.net before accepting Islam, Ridley said that the wonderful thing about Islam was that “you have a direct link with God. You don’t need a conduit or a middle person. Peace and love to all.”
Ridley has become a fervent anti-war campaigner since her release.
She has supported the Stop the War Coalition and traveled around the world addressing anti-war gatherings.
She is a founding member of Women in Journalism and the patron of British organization Stop Political Terror, which looks into the welfare of Muslims in Britain, especially those being held in the notorious Belmarsh and Woodhill prisons.
Ridley still writes for the Sunday Express and also for Muslims Weekly in New York.
She is currently involved with the Islam Channel, a satellite broadcast that started about a year ago in Britain.
Hijab in Parliament
An active member of the nascent Respect political party in Britain, Ridley hopes to be the first female Muslim politician wearing a hijab in the parliament.
“I stood as a candidate in the European elections and we got a quarter of a million votes nationally,” she told the paper.
She continued: “It didn’t translate into a seat but we are going to be fielding candidates in the general elections which may be held in May next year.
“What is particularly significant is if I am successful, I would become the first female Muslim politician to sit in Westminster and probably the first woman wearing a hijab to sit in the houses of parliament.”
But Ridley knows that there is still a long way to go, though encouraged by the support of many Britons, who believe that Prime Minister Tony Blair has let them down.
“There is a ground swell of support from people who feel as though they no longer have a voice in the party headed by a British prime minister who appears to prefer to take his orders from Washington rather than from the people who elected him.”

The prisoners in Guantanamo Bay detention should never have been taken there. It soils the military to even have to pretend that such terrorists deserve anything but a firing squad when captured, since, as anyone who understands the history of armed conflict realizes -those not in uniform are considered 'spies' and can be summarily executed.
That the military intelligence services wanted to squeeze them like rotten fruit for the juicy details of their upcoming plans is tactically and strategically understandable, but this work should have been left to the captives' fellow Muslim brothers in Afghanistan. Actually, True Brit, you are close to it, but not quite. I doubt she went through hypnotherapy to acquire this way of thinking. What Yvonne Ridley is probably the victim of is called "Stockholm Syndrome." This is what people who are kidnapped often go through to try and survive in a kidnap situation. Out of extreme fear and trauma, they try to identify with their captors and "understand" them and their motives. In the process, they see them (again, they have to do this in order to survive psychologically) as good people who are really just "misunderstood." I would say that this is what she was, and is still, going through.
If you think about Patty Hearst and her kidnapping by the SLA, you get the same picture. She, after being held for several weeks/months was found not only siding with the SLA, but also standing in the bank with a gun trying to rob it. This is what Yvonne Ridley is living out. I feel sorry for her.
