LONDON (Reuters) - Security services have thwarted a planned attack on London similar to the March 11 train bombings in Madrid by Islamic extremists, the British capital's police chief said on Thursday."Thank God to date, and we have had to work extremely hard, we've thwarted attacks," Metropolitan Police Commissioner Sir John Stevens told the BBC.
Asked if his force had stopped a strike on the scale of the Spanish attack, he added: "Yes, I can't discuss it because of court proceedings -- but yes we have stopped a Madrid."
The morning rush-hour bombings on commuter trains killed 191 people in the most devastating attack in modern Spanish history, just three days before a general election.
The attackers claimed to represent al Qaeda in Europe.
Stevens said "a number" of attacks had been thwarted in London and "hundreds" of terrorist suspects were being processed in British courts, according to extracts on the BBC Web site.
He would not give any details.

I can already see the left wing Brit publishers wetting their pants at exclusive stories and handing out "advances" to these would be murderers.
Just after the Madrid slaughter,a Muslim in Canada was caught filming our transit system buildings and a major Subway station for pasengers changing trains.
Of course CAIR jumped to the aid of the man and screamed "Islamophobia" and "Racism" because lots of tourists video the transit system and tall buildings,they also organized a group-filming of our main Tele-communication Tower as a stunt for the media to mock the concerns of the Police since the Madrid murders frightened transit users.
The man failed to tell CAIR that the Police were alerted by a passenger overhearing his wispering in Arabic to a lookout while he used a tote bag to hide the camera. CAIR was also ignorant about his shady past in Egypt where his children were attending a Madrasah to learn the Quran. Oh and CAIR wasn't told about his videoing of Subway station enterances at several stops,he claimed his kids missed Canada and he was making a movie to send them,this was while both sons were under 10 years old and never travelled
around the city to actually MISS it.
Just wait until a Jihadist blows up a Station,CAIR will blame the Police for failing to make the system secure and allowed the Jihad just the the USA allowed the 9/11 hijackers to plot the attack while in their Country.

Sorry NOSSY, am not so optimistic... Police may have saved British Bacon this time but London is awash with Terrorists. Sooner or later, there is going to be a big attack with many casualities because unlike America, U.K is UNPREPARED!!
I have said this before but our experience of dealing with other terrorist threats means that security precautions are second nature to me now. But we must not become complacent. Neither must we let theoretical concern for the Human Rights of the perpetrators blind us to the practical concern for my human right not to be attacked on my way to work.
