BUFFALO, N.Y. -- An Islamic civil rights group Wednesday accused U.S. border agents of religious profiling after dozens of American Muslims were searched, fingerprinted and photographed while returning from a religious conference in Toronto.Some of those stopped said they were held at the Lewiston-Queenston Bridge for six hours or more with no explanation.
A spokeswoman for Homeland Security's Customs and Border Protection said agents stopped anyone who said they attended the three-day convention, titled "Reviving the Islamic Spirit," based on information that such gatherings can be a means for terrorists to promote their cause.
"I asked `If I refuse to give my fingerprints, what will you do?"' said Galeb Rizek, 32, who claimed he arrived at the border around midnight and was held until 6:30 a.m. "(The agent) said, `You can refuse, but you'll be here until you do."'
Rizek, whose family owns a hotel in Niagara Falls, said he is a frequent traveler across the border and has never before been fingerprinted or photographed. He described one woman, traveling with her young daughter, who protested and sobbed through the fingerprinting. The little girl cried as well.
"It was kind of dramatic. You really feel like a criminal and you haven't done anything wrong," said Rizek, who was born in the United States.
"The image of a room full of American Muslim citizens apparently being held solely because of their faith and the fact that they attended an Islamic conference is one that should be disturbing to all Americans who value religious freedom," said Nihad Awad, executive director of the Washington-based Council on American-Islamic Relations.
The group demanded an investigation by Homeland Security officials.
CBP spokeswoman Kristie Clemens said 34 people were stopped at the Lewiston crossing and four others were checked at the nearby Rainbow Bridge in Niagara Falls. They were held for an average of 2 1/2 hours and offered coffee and tea, she said.
Clemens acknowledged the inconvenience over the additional security measures, but said with the threat of terrorism, there was no room for error.
"We have ongoing credible information that conferences such as the one that these 34 individuals just left in Toronto may be used by terrorist organizations to promote terrorist activities, which includes traveling and fund raising," Clemens said. "As the front-line border agency, it is our duty to verify the identity of individuals _ including U.S. citizens _ and one way of doing that is fingerprinting."
Mo Rizek, 19, said frustration among those held for several hours boiled over to anger.
"Everyone was yelling," he said. "Some people had a 10-hour drive back to Connecticut in front of them, people had to go to work in the morning ... Every single person there was a U.S. citizen."
He said one of the messages of the convention was how to change for the better the way people feel about Muslims post-Sept. 11.
One easy way to do that would be to cooperate with such inconveniences without complaining about profiling. The bottom line is still that if you are not doing anything wrong, you have nothing to worry about. Americans must accept these irritations as an unavoidable price of living freely and securely in America today. I myself have been stopped and searched many times at airports, and have never complained about it, nor will I ever, even if I were held for hours somewhere and had to miss my flight.

It's a major border crossing and border delays or extra scrutiny by immigration or customs officials is NOT-I REPEAT NOT-UNUSUAL.

As a Canadian, it bothers me to hear some of the comments regarding my beautiful country. It hurts mostly because the comments are true. I only hope that Canada's politicians and it's people wake up soon. Very soon.
I sent a letter regarding my thoughts and feelings regarding Canada/Islam/Shariah to many, many of our politicians a week or so before Christmas. The only response that I got was from one politician asking for my address. I sent it and haven't heard anything since. I guess since I'm not in his district, there is nothing that he could possibly do. Maybe I'll get some response after the holidays, but I don't think so.
I'm in the States right now visiting relatives. Even here, mentioning Islam and it's problems gets blank stares. People just do not realize what is happening. They see many very nice and friendly Muslims and base everything on those persons. They don't see that all these Muslims are the west's tsunami. It's a slow tsunami of Islam slowly invading and changing our society.
I myself feel sorry for many of these people because I firmly believe that most really do not know the problems with Islam. They've been taught to believe Islam is the greatest since they were born. It's a tough sell now to get them to see any differently.
Unfortunately for them, I must choose my culture, family and friends over them. Islam must be stopped by whatever means is required.
I'm beginning to think that my great country (Canada) will be going the way of so many European countries. We'll be an Islamic outpost waiting for the U.S. to make a mistake so that they too can be taken over. This is really grim.

There's a very easy solution to the situation with the Muslims who claim to be profiled at the borders or elswhere. It's just this simple, any Muslim that's annoyed by a few safety precautions should pack their bags and get their ass out of the country. Nothing at all hard about that.
If they have time to attend radical islamic conferences then they should have even more time to be turned inside out at the border.

I think that when the War started, most of us were shocked, surprised, and deeply hurt by Canada's response. It was like losing a beloved sibling to some sort of crazy cult--which, of course, is about what happened.
I was in a funk yesterday, but I'm more encouraged today; I think eventually Canada's patience and ours will wear thin, and eventually our policymakers will be pushed to the wall--quite possibly by citizens who see more clearly than they--where they will simply be forced to recognize that it's either "us or them."
Excuse me....thanks to muslims what was once a 10-20 min wait (on busy days) has now turned into a 30-60 min wait FOR EVERYONE which includes a border guard usualy searching your trunk and EVERYONE in the vehicle showing photo ID...the majority of people do not complain because we all realize that this is a sign of the times and is helping to keep us safer. In addition the border guards take their job very seriously...just try getting smart with them or acting like a jackass...even hesitating on certain questions can land you inside for hours (yes even if you are white and non muslim), your car can be taken apart piece by piece if they have the slightest suspicion about you. Do we know the whole story here? Perhaps mohammed (or whoever) in the lead car took exception to being asked "all those questions" (even though every person crossing is asked "those questions") and got snarky with the guy...worse perhaps it was a WOMAN doing the questioning and well he is a muslim MAN he isnt going to take any crap from a mere woman...even if she is a US govt official and armed...who knows why the entire convoy was pulled over, but for whatever reason THANK YOU to those employees at the border that are working hard to keep us safe.

Any Muslim who thinks that his "citizenship" is the last word on the matter, and that non-Muslims have no right to inquire into the real nature of that "citizenship" (a citizenship without loyalty, a citizenship of convenience, a citizenship intended to protect the Muslim who will work, in any way he can, to bring about the spread of Islam, and therefore, of a complete overthrow of all the Infidel institutions that flatly contradict the Shari'a or that otherwise are believed to be obstacles to the spread of Islam).
If any Muslim can explain how one can swear loyalty to the United States, and to its Constitution, including the First Amendment, and to do so without committing perjury, based on one's higher loyalty to Islam, we will all be grateful for this remarkable feat, this squaring of the Muslim circle -- or Sunni triangle, to increase the possibilities, geometrically.

Sadly Canada has not been a friend of the United States for a very long time. Most people are only now waking up to this fact. I have traveled quite a bit internationally, and have been verbally assaulted by Canadians more then any other group of people, not to mention the countless times I have watched Canadians make the statement "I'm not an American" when first meeting someone overseas, This is the first statement right after hello. It's only to sad that Canadians don't realize the reason they have it so good in their eyes is because who lives on their Southern Border.

Notwithstanding some of the negative characterizations of Canada and the "Reviving the Islamic Spirit" conference in Toronto over the holidays, fairness would dictate hearing from those who actually attended, and participated, in the conference.
One of the speakers, the head of the RCMP in Canada, addressed diversity, security, profiling, co-operation and peaceful ways to live together. An extended excerpt, and the full source, follows.

The following speech was delivered by RCMP Commissioner Giuliano Zaccardelli at the Reviving the Islamic Spirit Conference in Toronto, January 2, 2004. Several thousand Muslims from across Canada and around the world attended the conference.
"Let me begin by saying what an honour it is to address this great conference. I want to congratulate the organizers not only for the job they have done, but for the example they have set.
An example of bringing people together, of reaching out, building bridges, opening doors - and opening minds.
At a time when it would be easy to curse the darkness, you chose to light a candle and I want to congratulate all of you for such a positive and productive approach.
As Commissioner of the RCMP, I welcome your efforts to build understanding. And I welcome your contributions to helping us build a more diverse, representative and culturally-sensitive organization.
Let me look back for a moment before we look forward together.
There is no doubt that September 11th had a profound impact on all of us. In a few horrific minutes, priorities changed. Perceptions were altered. And people who had once been our neighbours and friends suddenly - and unfairly - became suspect.
No one understands this better than those of you in this room. The tragedy of that day has been used to justify hateful actions and words against innocent Muslims. There has been a backlash of violence and vandalism.
For many of you, these have been personal - and painful.
Those who single out Muslims for unfair treatment or unjust accusations seek to sow hatred and division. That is their objective. It must not be their achievement.
I can tell you in no uncertain terms that the RCMP considers such incidents to be hate crimes. They are serious criminal acts and they will not be tolerated. Together with our local police partners, we will investigate them thoroughly and pursue them rigorously.
The fact is that Canada is a country that embraces diversity and tolerance. Indeed, there are few nations in the world that cannot look to Canada and see their own reflection. We celebrate our different backgrounds, cultures and religions. This diversity makes us unique. Its ever changing composition keeps our country ever new. ...
We, as Canadians, have to find that great elusive Canadian way. You know, the Canadian way is alive all over the world and I just heard examples from some of the great folks that I just met here over the last hour. Unfortunately, sometimes the Canadian way is least appreciated in Canada , but yet the world is crying out for Canadian examples of how people come together in harmony in a peaceful way to solve problems.
I applaud Muslim leadership in this country for coming forward and working out the solutions in a peaceful way.
I applaud the wisdom of the Muslim leadership. People like Faisal Joseph, who was one of the first people in his community to condemn the terrorist acts of September 11. A lawyer in London, Joseph has worked hard to clarify some commonly held misconceptions about Islam, Jihad and the Muslim culture.
He has spoken out on how to improve the relationship between police and the Muslim community and how we might work together to fight against terrorism. The first step, he said must be to instill trust in these communities by being sensitive to the cultural differences that might make people uneasy about talking with police. And he warned against slipping into “racism and stereotyping,” which too often draws conclusions without evidence.
Let me state for the record, the RCMP will not tolerate racism and will not tolerate stereotyping. It is contrary to the Canadian Charter of Rights and Freedoms. It is contrary to the internal policies of the RCMP. And it is contrary to the values of our organization.
Crime has no colour. Or language. Or religion. How we enforce the law should not be influenced by any of these issues.
We must - and we will - seek to understand the unique challenges newcomers face. However, we cannot - and we will not - turn a blind eye to crime wherever we may find it.
In the RCMP, policing is criminal intelligence-based and values-led. And, we know that if we are to live up to our goal of being an organization of excellence, we must constantly strive to improve, constantly strive to do better.
