I wrote about this case in Islam Unveiled. It is interesting in light of the way Muslims in the West tend to downplay the existence and implications of Qur'an 4:34.
From Expatica, with thanks to Anthony:
MADRID-The Spanish deputy prime minister has attacked the decision to free a controversial imam who was jailed for writing a book which advised readers how to attack women without leaving any marks.María Teresa Fernández de la Vega strongly criticised release of Mohamed Kamal Mostafa, who was freed after only serving 20 days of a 12-month sentence.
In an interview with the programme 'Ruedo Ibérico' on Spain's Antena 3 channel, the deputy prime minister said "this did not help to reinforce the line which Spanish society had adopted to domestic violence: zero tolerance".
She criticised the decision of the court in Barcelona to release Mostafa on Monday.
Women's groups have also attacked the early release of the controversial Islamic cleric.
Mostafa, the imam of Fuengirola in Andalusia, was jailed last month for one year.
But he was released and must go on a training course to learn about human rights.
Interesting. I doubt the course will deal with the Islamic roots of Mostafa's beliefs -- and if it doesn't, what good will it be?
"The Spanish deputy prime minister has attacked the decision to free a controversial imam who was jailed for writing a book which advised readers how to attack women without leaving any marks. [he] was freed after only serving 20 days of a 12-month sentence... he was released and must go on a training course to learn about human rights."
"...learn about human rights."
Yeah. Sure. Right. Like that's gonna happen. How many people do you know even in the United States who can define a "right"? Derive the concept of a "right"?
How many ordinary, everyday, practicing Muslims do you think would be receptive to the concept of "rights"?
Doesn't Spain realize that the very NOTION of "rights" is an IMMORAL one to Islam?
We gotta get'em while they're still receptive to the idea of "rights"--and we need to start with our own children.
I would suggest sending him to transfer him to a womens prison to learn about human rights."
Shiva - Transfer him to a women's prison --Now that would be justice . . .hmmm, how about adding the element of 'reality tv'? /
Qur'an 4:34
Men are in charge of women, because Allah hath made the one of them to excel the other, and because they spend of their property (for the support of women). So good women are the obedient, guarding in secret that which Allah hath guarded. As for those from whom ye fear rebellion, admonish them and banish them to beds apart, and scourge them. Then if they obey you, seek not a way against them. Lo! Allah is ever High, Exalted, Great.
It should be noted that when the Government of Sudan was recently confronted by human rights NGOs about its attitudes towards womens rights (evident in the shari'a laws based on Qur'an 4:34 and elswewhere), the GOS used the Freedom of Religion clauses in the ICCPR to deflect criticism and justify its positions. This should be seen as the disturbing precedent that it is - if shari'a is ever imposed on the Free World, there is nothing to say that womens rights will not be returned to the medieval dictates of the Qur'an and Sunnah. This means mysoginistic scum like Mohamed Kamal Mostafa will be able to abuse their wives and daughters with complete impunity.
This man belongs in jail, not in a sensitivity seminar that he will fake his way through.
The issue concerning the fourth Sura and wife beating seems to me so incredibly simple, and the issue goes right to the core of the point Spencer is trying to make: will anyone (courts, scholars, politicans in the West or Muslims anywhere) confront what the Qur'an literally says and say, "this is wrong", i.e. "what it literally says is wrong"? Can the question be any more clear than that?
Go to any 'moderate' Muslims web site, or to any Muslim Student Association web site in the US, and review the talk about the 'correct interpretation of the Qur'an' and all such babble, that is typically da'wa propaganda dribble. Well, address the question please; confront the text and just say, "no, this is not right, sorry".
Where are the moderate Muslims out there who want to protect women from getting the snot beat out of them because a Muslim man has taken 4:34 seriously? Where are you? Speak up. Either let everyone know that the text is wrong or give it some ad hoc spin (and make it good please) that will protect women throughout the world who have to live with the fact that people read this text and actually believe it comes straight from the mouth of 'the Messenger of Allah'.
Where are you folks? Where is that 'correct interpretation' of these 'revelations from heaven'?
Ooopppps, too late, one more woman bites the dust...
He should've been released from jail.
Then shot.
Spain is lost.
They may as well open the doors for the Islamic invasion.
Pelayo would turn in his grave if he knew!
Lets not forget that Muslims are asking themselves "I wonder what she did to drive her husband to beat her" ,the root cause of violence is never the fault of a Muslim,it's always someone else that provoked them to murder and beat females or infidels.
He served only 20 days of a 12-month sentence. Now there's a limp slap on the wrist with a wet noodle! Yes, this should scare the crap out of these imams and make them rethink their position on beating wives. Not! In an interview, Zapatero claimed he was a feminist. LOL! Yeah, right. Like all typical feminists, only when it comes to white European men's sexism, turning a blind eye & a deaf ear to non-European abuse of women.
Like an spanish you can imagine like I am, very ashamed, by in my country the ignorance is great and many people don´t know that in Koran the women beating is allowed, and if you say, you´re a racist, pray for my county, we will need, merry christmas to everybody
