Alyssa Lappen at FrontPage takes us inside the twilight world of the propaganda jihad. Remember Mohammed Al-Dura, the little Palestinian boy who was shot dead on film by Israeli troops? You couldn't have missed it: the footage was replayed endlessly, and became the foundation of international outrage against Israel. But one inconvenient little detail is becoming increasingly clear: it didn't happen. The whole thing was staged by Palestinian propagandists, apparently with the knowledge and consent of major media outfits.
This one makes Memogate look like a walk in the park.
More than four years have passed since the picture of Mohammed Al Durrah was aired across the world, but the public still imagines the boy's Sept. 30 2000 presence at Netzarim junction in terms described by President Clinton in My Life:"As the violence persisted, two vivid images of its pain and futility emerged,” he writes: “a twelve year old Palestinian boy shot in the crossfire and dying in his father's arms, and two Israeli soldiers pulled from a building and beaten to death, with their lifeless bodies dragged through the streets and one of their assailants proudly showing his bloodstained hands to the world on television."
In short, Al Durrah should never have been juxtaposed with a lynching, much less by the leader of the free world. Two weeks after the Al Durrah tapes aired, two Jewish soldiers lost their way in Ramallah, where they were savagely beaten to death, their innards eaten by hysterical and frenzied crowds screaming Allah Akbar--God is great--and seeking revenge for the supposed death of the boy. Indeed, the Al Durrah case is nothing more than a classic Islamic incitement to jihad.
But evidently, the shooting was merely photographic. “The violence erupted after the Al Durrah incident,” notes Daniel Seaman, director of Israel's Government Press Office, who openly calls the incident a hoax, a staged forgery.
Since Seaman made this charge publicly in late 2002, few mainstream news media picked up the story. These include the European Wall Street Journal and New York Sun, which both ran columns in November, respectively by Stephane Juffa, the Metula Press Agency (MENA) chief in Israel and Nidra Poller, an expatriate writer in France.
Nearly two years ago, France 2 Jerusalem bureau chief Charles Enderlin -- also the vice president of Israel's foreign press association -- threatened to sue. On January 2, 2003, the legal adviser to Prime Minister Ariel Sharon wrote to Enderlin, noting that Israel is a free country. Seaman named neither Enderlin nor France 2. But if he felt injured by Seaman's remarks, Enderlin was more than welcome to take appropriate legal action. The counsel advised Enderlin, Israel has “reliable information” that the case was indeed a fraud, the counsel advised Enderlin, however. At long last, in November, attorneys of France 2 and Enderlin have sued in France -- not Seaman, not Israel, not Metula, not the Wall Street Journal, but “X.”
Before detailing French statutes making such a preposterous case possible, a brief recap of the Al Durrah hoax is in order. On Sept. 30, 2000, dozens of reporters and cameraman waited around for news as children lobbed stones, Molotov cocktails and heavy appliances from the ground and nearby buildings onto the roof of the only Israeli guard post at Netzarim Junction. In a superb investigative coup, renowned Israeli physicist Nacham Shahaf wrested three hours of raw September 30 news reels from Reuters and the Associated Press. These rushes show very clearly that the Israelis shot only when fired upon, and that Palestinians walked around without fear.
Another important fact shows too: The Israeli post was situated at a very wide angle to the position of Jamal and Mohammed Al Durrah--behind a Palestinian warehouse two times its own height.
In other words, even if the Israelis were filmed shooting, which they weren't, it was physically impossible for them to have wounded either Mohammed or his father Jamal Al Durrah, who were crouched, entirely out of view, behind a barrel topped by a cement cinder block. On the Al Durrah's side, moreover, the barrel has no bullet holes. If bullets penetrated it from the Israeli side, they did not come out.
Whoever shot at the Al Durrahs that day, it was not the Israelis.
Shooting footage was Talal Abu Rahmeh, a Palestinian stringer for AP and Reuters, who created the icon of supposed Israeli brutality. Abu Rahmeh said under oath that he shot 27 minutes of film. In tapes broadcast worldwide, he asserted that Israeli soldiers subjected the man and the boy to 45 minutes of withering fire, that Israelis intentionally shot the boy dead.
Abu Rahmeh said the boy bled for 20 minutes. The father said he was shot in the hand, arm, and leg and that his elbow and pelvis were crushed--and that a bullet ripped through his son's stomach and exited from his back.
But in the rushes, there is no blood on either the victims or the ground. The supposed 27 minutes of footage was apparently less than three minutes. Three hours of additional rushes from AP and Reuters obtained by Shahaf show much more besides.
At the rear of the warehouse, inside a hollowed out room, several armed and uniformed Palestinian Arabs were filmed on Sept. 30, 2000, talking calmly with directors. The latter then clear the area before takes. Since when do fighters take their cues from civilians?
Later the same day, at least five AP and Reuters photographers taped the same Palestinians firing through a large hole in the rear cinder block wall into the empty warehouse room they had quietly occupied hours earlier. At whom were they firing? The Israeli position was on the other side of the warehouse, in a building half the size. Given their lack of fear and the positive glee of bystanders, these men were surely acting.
Thirty people were reportedly killed and hundreds wounded that day, but the rushes show not one critical injury. Every evacuation was careless of its effects on the supposed patients. One man grabs his leg as if shot, but like the Al Durrah's remains unbloodied. He is then roughly loaded onto a gurney--on his “injured” leg. Another young man hands off a Molotov cocktail before being swooped into his colleagues arms and thrown into the back of a waiting prop--one of several Red Crescent and UN ambulances. Actors clap and laugh as its doors close. Others were caught sunbathing, talking on cell phones, standing nonchalantly, their backs turned to the Israelis. Clearly, these are mises en scene.
There is much more. Read it all.
UPDATE: Missketz kindly reminds me of this superb Atlantic Monthly piece also establishing that the whole thing was a fraud. (And here's a link for non-subscribers to the Atlantic, with thanks to Louise.)
Sorry Robert, but all these evidences are similar to , for instance, Irving's so-called "Evidences" trying to refute the Holocaust. So far AFP has stood by its story and this was not the first or only time that a child was killed in the battle between Israelis and Palestinians.
Let me get this straight, this was a HOAX? I remember the day I went to my Yemeni owned deli to pich up the New York Post. The owner began to weep at the front page photo depicting the killing. He asked me why the Israeli's did this.
Now it is proven all a staged hoax and the crickets can be heard in the journalistic world in response?
Those poor Israeli soldiers were butcherd in retaliation for an act that never happened when they were lost in palestianian terrotories and no one is held accountable?
This defies all logic that Israel is not accepted as the victim of a devious campagn to destroy it while the "palestianian" Arabs are a cause celebre world wide with their evil leader Yasser Arafat honored as their founding father and revered by the Arab world despite his blood satuariated hands give one pause.
Stop the world, I want to get off.
Seena,
The comparison to Irving is just a cheap shot unless you can prove the evidence that Lappen marshals in the article to be false.
The fact that AFP stands by the story may be proof of obstinacy, or complicity with the people who staged the event, and not necessarily proof that the story is accurate at all.
Please read the full article at FP and let me know where it doesn't hold water. I'll be right here.
Cordially

their innards eaten by hysterical and frenzied crowds screaming Allah Akbar--God is great
My, my. Supposedly halal-keeping Muslims eating raw flesh, presumably with the blood, of creatures supposedly akin to apes and pigs! Very bitter LOL.
I've lost most sympathy for the Palestinian cause that I ever had due to their love of this kind of viciousness; and if the al-Dura shooting does indeed prove to be a hoax, I'll probably look the other way every time Israel answers one of their provocations.
I look forward to the day when all the available footage about this incident is aired as an expose on national tv (I can dream). I remember this incident being covered on every major american t.v. network. My heart broke as I watched that child cower in his father's arms. The propaganda value of that footage - repeatedly shoved down viewers throats over a period of days was indisputable. However, it was soon reported that the investigation was underway and many questions regarding the incident were unanswered.
Over the years, it became clearer and clearer that this was nothing more than propaganda.
Propaganda that is sympathetic to the Pale cause is nothing new.
This years candidate for the award for 'dishonest' reporting is of similar ilk . . . see this link:
http://www.honestreporting.com/articles/45884734/critiques/The_Dishonest_Reporting_Awards_2004.asp
If not for web sites like JW/DW, honestreporting and MEMRI . . .I would be forced to rely on the drek that main stream media peddles as fact.
I look forward to the day when we hold the AP and Reuters accountable - as they are absolutely complicit with the "terrorists".
I think it is clear when one considers the overall proven nature and tactics of the Arabs and contrast that with Israel which has investigated and imprisioned their military personnel for genuine offences who you should give the benefit of the doubt to.
Israel IS the victim of an orchestrated attempt to manipulate world opinion against it, in this case by using the imagery of a hapless , cowering child. The evidence at FP convinces me that this was staged and I certainly know of several news events of recent publication which have shown the Arabs intentionally placing children into dangerous situations hoping that just an event could trigger world wide condemnation which can be brought to bear against Israel in the long term objective of Islamicizing it.
Use your heads, in a sane world, NO ONE WOULD NEGIOATE NOR TRUST SUCH A PEOPLE UNTIL THEY PROVE TO CHANGE THEIR WAYS PERIOD, NOT BEFORE.
Wasn’t there a similar event during the Bosnian war? There was lots of pictures (taken by a French-Muslim reporter) of a man who was obviously undernourished, standing behind a high barbwire fence, with several other people around him, who also looked like inmates. The implication was that he was either a Muslim or Croat in a Serbian run concentration camp. It turned out that he was a Serb who was suffering from Tuberculosis in a refugee camp. If I remember right the picture even made it to the cover of TIME magazine.
O.T.
Re: my above comments. I have some of the details wrong, but my drift is right. No muslim-french reporter was involved. Nor was the man a refugee. I will try to check my facts a little closer in the future. Anyway, have a look at the story link below. Propaganda at it's best.

wasnt the fatal shots fired from beside or just behind the palistinian cameraman.and the father was pleading in the direction of the camera,
Its like the hoax that Islam is a peaceful religion......HAhahahahahahaha....What a joke that is....
With that in mind, I think it is too bad that the Muslim religious leaders don't just join the rank and file they are encouraging and start blowing themselves up as well...
Seena, how many Palestinian children were sent to their deaths by jihadists trolling for world sympathy? Hint: the answer is "a lot". Recall the shooting death of a teenage girl in November- she had to climb across a barricade and crime scene tape, then pass through warning signs in Arabic, French, English and Hebrew in order to "innocently walk near a guard booth" swinging a bookbag. IDF soldiers fired on her, fearing that she was a suicide bomber. It was a reverse suicide mission, designed to create another wave of antisemitism.
I also remember the photo of Israeli soldiers training their rifles on a small child in Jerusalem, with headlines announcing that this was a "Palestinian" child being terrorized by the evil IDF monsters. When it came to light that it was in fact a Jewish child from New York who had just been attacked by an Arab mob and who was being protected by the IDF, the retraction was buried deep inside the paper- and it continues to be a convenient lie trotted out from time to time by the liberal sympathizers of "Palestine".
This is far worse, and G-d willing, the people who really did kill this child will be brought to justice. Forgive me for not holding my breath.
I wish I had a dollar for every conspiracy and "crime" the Israelis were never involved with...
...trotted out from time to time by the liberal sympathizers of "Palestine".
Like David Duke?
Libby's mom, if you are whining about sympathizers of "palestine" and think they are all liberal, you're only half right.
This whole charade is utterly despicable. The entire "intifada" has been a publicity stunt from day one, as has the entire era of "palestinian" suffering.
Since when do fighters take their cues from civilians?
It's called "propaganda."
KJ:
You are right. There are dupes on both sides of the political spectrum when it comes to Israel/Palestine (and the whole issue of the twin fascisms of pan-Arabism and Islamism), but do you ever think anyone will publish a book entitled, "The Nakba Industry".
You know that Jews, Israelis are an evil force worldwide! Why, they're responsible for the entire Muslim world's misery. Not only that, they are responsible for all recent acts of terrorism -- yes even that attributed to OBL, and AMaZ.
In Iraq, Saudi Arabia ... the Zionists have been busy, busy, busy! I heard that just the other day they were in Southeast Asia, and, that in many Muslim homes they slyly left a little gift floating in their otherwise sanctified toilet bowls.
The truth is, no-one else, no other people ARE and HAVE BEEN more willing to sacrifice their children by poisoning their minds and directly, physically putting them in harms way in order to perpetuate their "victim" status. That's how murderously evil they are, which is proportionate to their ENVY and HATRED of the Jews. Jews who despite their small numbers have and continue to make enormous contributions to ALL OF MANKIND! You know it and admit it indirectly when you ask to be taken to an Israeli hospital instead of a Palestinian hospital...
I understand the depths of your humiliation at not contributing one whit to humanity since you discovered "zero" despite your high numbers and oil reserves. I understand the insecurities of your male dominated, female subjugating societies. It's difficult to relate to full grown women when you are so attracted to boys and girls who can't intellectually trump you.
Get over it, you who sacrifice your children! Get over your hatred and start using some of that energy, that cunning to change yourselves and your society instead of devising new ways to "TRY" TO DESTROY ISRAEL!
Aww, what's the use ..
The al-Dura farce was phony from the beginning -- one had only to look at the absence of blood, the dramatic clutching by the boy, and of course, the position of the Israelis hundreds of yards away, and with a barrier between the supposed "victim" and the line of Israeli fire.
But this is not the first, nor the last, such phony atrocity stage-managed by the Arabs (the PLO has a guide-sheet for families of terrorists -- make sure that the women are weeping, that all the children are brought out, and that at least one is being held when the photographer for the Western news agency is there; it is all quite detailed, down to the last despairing ululation).
Of course the Israelis are not the only ones on the receiving end of this propaganda war. The Americans have been getting their own dose -- one which the hundreds of thousands of American soldiers in Iraq will never forget -- of false claims about the deliberate murder of civilians when, in fact, the Americans, like the Israelis, take enormous risks in order to protect civilian lives. In the recent retaking of Fallujah, the first place to be seized was the hospital, for it was from that hospital that, last April, all sorts of false charges were made, and continued to be made, about civilian casualties. It takes a while for sensible non-Muslims, rational, decent, naive Westerners, to begin to comprehend whom they are dealing with, and even when they experience it, they cannot quite believe it.
The Israelis have had to deal with it for years; the Americans, for close to two years. And of course, in another way, so have so many non-Muslim peoples subjected to Muslim aggression, ever since the media became the fixed object of Arab Muslim attention.
The al-Dura case is the most publicized, but it is only one among hundreds or thousands of phony atrocities, the fantastic conconctions and exaggerations of people who, day after day, commit the real atrocities in the Middle East, and elsewhere.
What needs to be examined, however, in this particular case, is the role of the French television station that has been lying about a missing "27 minutes" of footage (that never existed), and the role of the French reporter Charles Enderlin, who needs to be thoroughly investigated, as do many of those reporting from the Middle East, and whose tendentiousness and bias are now pushing into the realm of treason --treasion to the Infidel world, as their identification with the phrasing, and the worldview, of Muslims and their supporters, which one might have ascribed to antisemitism alone, is being demonstrated to such an extent as to represent a a source of confusion, and hence a threat, to the entire Western world.
sympathy?
We need to learn and keep in mind that word sympathy is in the dictionary between the words SH_T and SYPHILIS!!!

Ritual Murders of Jews in Paris
By Alyssa A. Lappen

In Texas in August 2003, Ariel Sellouk was murdered by a longtime Muslim friend. In France, one year ago, Jewish shopkeeper Chantal Piekolek and famed Parisien DJ Sebastian Sellam were brutally murdered within one 24-hour period. Sellam was the son of refugees from Morocco and spoke fluent Arabic. He met his death in his parking garage, en route to work. A Muslim he knew since childhood slit Sebastian's throat, carved up his face with a fork and gouged out his eyes. He then climbed the stairs to the Sellams' apartment and showed the horrified mother his bloody hands. “I have killed my Jew,” he said, “I will go to heaven.” Piekolek's 10-year-old daughter heard her murder while cowering in the shop storage room. Neither of these murders were reported in the mainstream French press. In all three instances, officials dismissed anti-Semitism as the motive. No motive? Shouldn't law enforcement officials call jihad a motive?

Religious Overtones Color a Murder in Texas
By SEAMUS McGRAW
The victim was a Jew, slaughtered in a Houston apartment, his throat slit so deftly with a 6-inch butterfly knife that he was nearly decapitated.
The killer was an Arab, a newly minted religious Muslim and the son of a millionaire Saudi businessman. He had been bailed out of trouble by the Saudi consulate after previous scrapes with the law, and in the hours after the slaying, authorities said, he plotted to flee to his homeland.
On the surface, the bizarre murder last summer of Ariel Sellouk at the hands of Mohammed Ali Alayed seemed to have all the elements of a classic hate crime, especially when viewed against the violence in the Middle East, continued uncertainty about American security in the wake of the September 11 attacks and the ongoing war on terrorism. But when Alayed appeared last week in a Houston courtroom to plead guilty to murder, there was no mention of terrorism or international intrigue.
The word "hate" with all its legal connotations was never even mentioned.
"It didn't help me," said Stephen St. Martin, assistant district attorney of Harris County.
"The hate crime statute would only enhance [the sentence] one penalty level, and murder is already at the highest level," the prosecutor said. "So I would just be stating something else that I would have to prove.... Why make my job harder?"
Precisely what led to Sellouk's gruesome slaying last year remains a mystery. According to police reports and interviews with the prosecutor and Alayed's defense attorney, the two young men met about two years ago as students at Houston Community College. According to his lawyer, George Parnham, Alayed was hardly religious at that time. On the contrary, he was a frequent customer at various local bars and often was seen with Sellouk, the son of a Jewish immigrant from Morocco. The two young men reportedly shared a fondness for darts and young women. Alayed was a guest at Sellouk's 21st birthday party.
A little more than a year ago, however, the two students parted ways. It is curious, Parnham acknowledged, that Alayed severed his relationship with Sellouk about the same time that he underwent a religious awakening and became an observant Muslim. Still, it is not clear whether Alayed's conversion played a role in the breakdown of the friendship. Nor is there any evidence that it had an effect on the mayhem that followed, Parnham said.
"I don't know if his religious conversion... played any ... role in what occurred," Parnham said. "I know of nothing... that would suggest that it was a factor, but... objectively speaking, you look at it, you put it into the equation."
What is clear is that the two men had no contact for more than a year.
Then, in early August, Alayed reached out to his former friend. According to police reports, the two young men spent part of the evening of Aug. 5 at a local bar. That Alayed — who now considered himself a devout Muslim and who, according to the laws of the religion, should have shunned drinking and drinking establishments ññ was in a tavern is just one of the baffling incongruities in the case, Parnham said.
"This case is filled with contradictions, and obviously that is one of them," Parnham said.
By all accounts, there was no acrimony between Alayed and Sellouk the night of the murder. The two left the bar together and went back to Alayed's apartment, a comfortable place in the upscale Galleria section of Houston that he shared with a roommate despite the $60,000 allowance Alayed received from his millionaire father.
Alayed's roommate, who did not know Sellouk, was home when the two young men arrived, sometime around 1 a.m. on Aug. 6, according to police reports. The roommate later told police that, as far as he could tell, there was no argument between Alayed and the stranger he had brought home.
Suddenly, the roommate told authorities, Alayed pulled out a knife and attacked Sellouk, slitting his throat with such force and precision that, as the gruesome autopsy photos would later show, the young man's head was nearly severed. Before he fled the apartment, Alayed told his roommate he was going to try to make it back to Saudi Arabia.
Though police arrived on the scene within minutes, Alayed remained at large for nearly a week before authorities found him hiding in a closet in a vacant apartment in the same complex where he lived. He was arrested without a struggle and later confessed to the crime.
Almost from the beginning, investigators suspected that Sellouk had been murdered because he was a Jew. The Anti-Defamation League also looked into the case to determine whether it was a hate crime.
Ultimately, Parnham said, such theories were "discounted." The defense lawyer said, "there was no evidence to substantiate the hate element."
St. Martin, however, was unwilling to rule out antisemitism as a possible factor in the killing. But, the prosecutor added, there may not have been enough evidence to prove it conclusively, and so he opted to try the case as a straight murder rather than a hate crime. "I'm not saying it was not a hate crime," St. Martin told the Forward. "I'm just saying that it would have been extremely difficult to prove that to a jury."
From the prosecution's point of view, it was a wise call. Even Parnham acknowledges that St. Martin's murder case against Alayed was nearly airtight. "The circumstances supporting the evidence in this case were overwhelming in favor of guilt," he said. Among the solid factors arrayed against Alayed were the eyewitness testimony from Alayed's roommate, Alayed's own confession and his attempt to flee.
There also were intangibles, said Parnham, that made him leery of a trial. Among them was the potential impact that Sellouk's family might have on the jury if they had been given a chance to testify.
St. Martin already had managed to inject Alayed's Saudi background into the proceedings during a hearing, when he introduced evidence that the Saudi consulate had posted bail for Alayed on minor infractions in the past.
In one case, the Saudi government forfeited $15,000 when Alayed failed to appear to answer charges of driving with a revoked license, St. Martin said. This time around, the court set his bail at $5 million — and the Saudis did not pay it. Nor did anyone else, and Alayed remains behind bars.
Agents from the federal Homeland Security Department reportedly visited Alayed in jail without his lawyer's knowledge. Homeland Security officials later told reporters that the visit involved matters of jail security and not the murder case. All the same, the meeting underscored what Parnham saw as post-September 11 suspicion, a trend that would seem to be working against his client. In short, it was clear that Parnham would have faced almost insurmountable obstacles in trying to defend Alayed.
"I think in today's climate, the Saudi Arabian issue and everything stemming from 9-11, I think that it was a factor ... when making a determination about whether or not to try a case before 12 Texans," Parnham said.
In the end, Parnham opted to, as he put it, "basically cut my losses and save as much of Alayed's life as I possibly could."
On January 12, Alayed pled guilty to one count of murder. Under the deal he cut with the District Attorney's office, the Saudi national, who could have faced 99 years in prison, will likely get 60 years when he is sentenced April 9.
It is entirely possible that the real motive behind the murder of Ariel Sellouk will never be known.
Even now, authorities won't speculate on a motive, a refusal that the ADL's Houston-based Southwestern chapter is willing to accept. "We are very concerned and feel for the family, and if there's ever any indication that this was a hate crime, we'd certainly take a second look and work with the family to deal with it," said Dena Marks, associate director of the chapter. "But at this point, we have to be satisfied with what law enforcement is saying."
The family seems to be satisfied as well. Michel Sellouk, the victim's father, who only a few months ago declared his belief that Sellouk was the victim of some kind of antisemitic rage, no longer offers any opinion about why his son was murdered.
All he is willing to say of the killer now, according to published reports, is that "something must have set him off to do this heinous act."
And despite the hours he has spent with Alayed, Parnham, too, is at a loss.
"We have had a number of in-depth conversations and obviously I can't go into it, but I will simply characterize my relationship with Alayad as extraordinary. That said, I've been casting about ... to answer the question 'Why?' I'm still casting about."

It makes the Dan Rather episode seem like lies at boy scout meeting.
For two years , enderlin has kept the rest of the film under wraps and the staging of this photo op is one of the worst transgressions in the History of news reporting. france 2 is by now well aware of this and has gone into damage control.
many groups in France are attempting to expose them . What is needed is a huge demo outside their headquarters in Paris.
It is virtually a scientific impossibility that the IDF killed the Al Dura boy, if indeed he is dead and has not been whisked away by the PLO to another location.
There are many sites that show these impossibilities - bullets do not travel around corners!
I remember grabbing my 6 year old son in my arms hugging him while weeping, my wife(ex)asking whats wrong; we turned to fox news so I could show them the footage; we all wept,we prayed and discussed issues right or wrong; our son grew much that day; as well he will grow with this.

Hello,
Can someone provide a source that establishes that members of the Palestinian mob that lynched the IDF reservists in Ramallah ate parts of their victims? Thanks.
Give Israel a break. Where is the harm in
letting a tiny nation of a few million survive
in peace ? Palestinians can always get a separate nation in the west bank without the right of return.
But that would mean peace. Maybe we are asking Jihadis a little too much.
