Of course, this "little jihad" and "big jihad" talk recalls the concepts of jihad akbar (greater jihad) and jihad asghar (lesser jihad) -- the idea that the spiritual struggle within the soul is the greater jihad, with the lesser jihad being warfare. Of course, 20th century Muslim theorists revered by jihadists today, such as Hassan Al-Banna and Abdullah Azzam, reject this idea as based on a weak hadith, and stress the fact that in the Qur'an and Hadith, jihad is clearly warfare against unbelievers, and only secondarily anything else.
But anyway, in this context it is extremely unlikely that Mahmoud Abbas meant that it was time for Palestinians to begin a spiritual struggle. It is much more likely that his actual meaning was something far more sinister. From Israel National News, with thanks to the Constantinopolitan Irredentist:
Mahmoud Abbas (Abu Mazen) received just over 62% of the vote, and will take Arafat's place as Palestinian Authority chief - with a practically identical platform. Appearing before cheering crowds last night, Abu Mazen did little to allay Israeli fears that he is no different than Arafat. He said he dedicates his victory to "brother shahid [martyr] Yasser Arafat," to the "shahids and prisoners," and to the "Palestinian people from Rafiach to Jenin." The crowd responded, "A Million Shahids Marching to Jerusalem!"Abu Mazen also said that the period of the "little Jihad [holy war] had ended, and now the big Jihad is beginning." This quote led to a quaint exchange on Israel Radio's morning newsmagazine. Arabic-speaking correspondent Avi Yisacharov played the tapes of Abu Mazen's quotes, and then quickly said, "Regarding the future..." He was immediately interrupted by anchorman Aryeh Golan, who said, "Whoa, wait a second. What's this 'big Jihad' stuff?" Yisacharov gave a nervous chuckle and said, "I don't think he means a real Jihad, he just means the challenges ahead of reforms in the PA and the release of Palestinian prisoners by Israel..." Yisacharov similarly played a recording of a leading Abu Mazen supporter singing in joy at the results of the election, and explained that it was simply "an old PLO war song."
MK Shimon Peres, who is expected to be named Associate Prime Minister this afternoon if the Knesset approves the new composition of the government, said that Abu Mazen will have to apologize for this statement, "just like he apologized for his 'Zionist enemy' statement." Peres added that Abu Mazen was a "moderate, smart and experienced, and we have to give him a chance."
Yes, those apologies will take care of the problem. Is Shimon Peres blind, or does he just expect the rest of us to be?
Though rhetorical queries should ordinarily not be answered, Robert's query "is Shimon Peres blind, or does he just expect the rest of us to be" should be answered: Yes, and Yes.
A figure out of some I. B. Singer tale is Shimon Peres, a Fool of Chelm, who wooed his future wife by reading to her passages taken from not Keats, but Das Kapital. Peres's pronouncements on Peace, the Irrelevance of History, and the Glorious Future of Arab and Jew and Hence of All Mankind, have been collected; the result, called "Shimon Says" is one of the funniest Middle-Eastern items you are likely to find.
The funniest, of course, remains the eulogy written by Hamid Dabashi to Edward Said. Nothing could possibly top that.
HAS 9/11/2001 NOT TAUGHT US TO BELIEVE WHAT THEY SAY??
REMEMBER HE SAID??

Palestinian Leader Abbas Calls Israel 'Zionist Enemy' After Deadly Shelling

Tuesday, Jan. 4, 2005
BEIT LAHIYA, Gaza Strip – Two Israeli tank shells slammed into a field in response to Palestinian mortar fire Tuesday, killing seven Palestinians, including at least two children, in the deadliest incident in three months.
In condemning the deaths, Mahmoud Abbas, the front-runner in the campaign for Palestinian leader, called Israel the ``Zionist enemy,'' a marked escalation in anti-Israel rhetoric for the relative moderate. Abbas later came very close to the fighting, with two loud explosions going off nearby as he was about to visit survivors of the shelling at a northern Gaza hospital. Palestinian security officials said the explosions were set off by tank shells, a response to homemade rockets launched by Palestinian militants. Abbas' motorcade sped away.
The fighting began Tuesday morning, with militants firing mortar rounds that injured an Israeli woman. In response, tanks fired two shells that slammed into fields as farmers picked potatoes and strawberries, witnesses said. The military said the shells were aimed at nine masked militants involved in firing the mortar rounds.
There were conflicting reports on the ages and identities of the dead.
Dr. Mahmoud al-Asli, director of Kamal Adwan Hospital in the northern town of Beit Lahiya, said the dead were between the ages of 11 and 17. He named the seven victims and said six were from the Jaben family, including three brothers. An Associated Press photographer saw at least two children among the dead.
However, the Israeli military said Palestinian liaison officers gave them similar names of the dead but different ages. The military said it was told that six victims were 17 and older, with four or five of them belonging to the Islamic militant group Hamas, which has killed hundreds of Israelis in attacks and opposes the existence of the Jewish state.
Six people were wounded, including four in critical condition, doctors said. At the Beit Lahiya hospital, the floor of the emergency room was covered with blood, and several women fainted at the morgue's entrance.
A Palestinian farmer said from a hospital bed that the militants were leaving the area when the Israeli tank fired machine guns and shells.
``I was lying on the ground when the shooting started,'' said the blood-stained farmer, who gave only his first name, Suleiman.
``After it stopped, we ran and found body parts spread all over. One man I helped evacuate had lost his leg.''
Tuesday's incident was the deadliest in Gaza since Sept. 30, when an Israeli tank fired a shell at a group of gunmen in the Jebaliya refugee camp in northern Gaza, killing seven Palestinians and wounding 23.
Palestinian militants have stepped up mortar and rocket fire on Israeli settlements in Gaza and border towns in recent weeks as rival militant groups jockey for power ahead of a planned Israeli withdrawal from Gaza and try to portray the pullback as a retreat under fire.
Israeli Prime Minister Ariel Sharon has warned that the military would respond harshly to such attacks.
Abbas Embraces the Attackers
Abbas has asked militants to stop firing rockets, but he also has embraced gunmen during his recent campaign swing through Gaza and stepped up his criticism of Israel to reach out to younger and more militant voters. Held aloft by militants at some rallies, Abbas has said he prefers to co-opt the armed men rather than crack down on them as Israel demands.
Just hours after the violence in northern Gaza, Abbas harshly condemned the Israeli attack during a rally in the Khan Younis refugee camp in southern Gaza.
``We came to you today, while we are praying for the souls of the martyrs who were killed today by the shells of the Zionist enemy in Beit Lahiya,'' Abbas told thousands of supporters, using a term for Israel usually employed by Islamic militants.
Abbas was welcomed as a hero by the crowd in Khan Younis, which included many armed men. He also held a flag of Al Aqsa Martyrs' Brigades, a militant group with ties to his mainstream Fatah movement.
``We know the occupation has destroyed much and killed many, but our commitment will not be broken,'' he said.
'Moderate'
Abbas, who has criticized attacks against Israel, is viewed as a relative moderate and has the tacit support of Israel and the United States. His recent campaign rhetoric has caused some concern in Israel, though Israeli officials have refrained from publicly criticizing him ahead of Sunday's election.
An Israeli official said on condition of anonymity that if Abbas were elected, ``he will be judged by his actions, not his words, in providing security and fighting terrorism.''
On Monday, Abbas said at a rally in Gaza City he endorsed the claim by Palestinian refugees to return to homes they left during the war after Israel's creation in 1948. Abbas himself is a refugee from Safed, an ancient city in northern Israel.
In Israel, meanwhile, a clash between soldiers and settlers raised new concerns about how troops will manage when the time comes to dismantle settlements this year under Sharon's plan.
In Monday's incident at an unauthorized West Bank outpost near the settlement of Yitzhar, a soldier fired in the air during a scuffle with settlers, and an off-duty soldier called on fellow troops to disobey orders to tear down structures. Similar scuffles have erupted over the removal of outposts, but Monday marked the first time a soldier openly called for rebellion.
Sharon said soldiers who refused to carry out orders would be harshly punished.
``The law will be upheld,'' he said.
About 8,800 settlers are to be removed under Sharon's plan, a small fraction of the 244,000 settlers in the Palestinian areas. The government expects most to agree to compensation and leave before the deadline, but there are concerns that extremists might take their places in the targeted settlements and fight the military.

Abu Mazen was described on NPR yesterday as a "student of Jewish history." NPR was attempting to express the fact that Abu Mazen's doctoral thesis in a Soviet university consisted of a denial of the full extent of what we call, perhaps a bit too glibly, the Holocaust. He concluded that not 6 million, but fewer than 1 million, Jews, had been murdered. Some student. Some history.
Abu Mazen has no control over Hamas or Fatah.By the way, have they found Arafat's dosh yet??
"MK Shimon Peres, who is expected to be named Associate Prime Minister this afternoon if the Knesset approves the new composition of the government, said that Abu Mazen will have to apologize for this statement, "just like he apologized for his 'Zionist enemy' statement." Peres added that Abu Mazen was a "moderate, smart and experienced, and we have to give him a chance."
Abu Mazen, a moderate? He is a holocaust denying, Jew hater with blood on his hands!
This is like a bad dream. I tell myself this can't really be happening! But it is!
After all the damage Shimon Peres has done to Israel with the Oslo Accords you'd think he would be a persona non grata.
Here is a man who has no attachment to the land of Israel and subsequently has no compunction at giving it away to the professed enemy. He wants desperately to be accepted into the coveted arms of the EU. (Jerusalem will be an international capitol)
There isn't a steaming pile of BS he isn't willing to accept. He should have been committed years ago! But no, he is invited back in by Ariel Sharon who has also lost his mind!
This is a sickness people. A suicidal secular, post Zionist sickness
Hugh-
Your last words ("Some student. Some history.")reminded me of what Churchill replied when Hitler said (during the Battle of Britain -as the daring Spitfires were destroying the best of the Nazi airforce- thanks to the secret of radar), that the British would soon have 'their necks wrung like a chicken':
"Some chicken! Some neck!"
Sadly, with their current coddling of these crazies, the phrase takes on a different tone.
The Brits are turning chicken, and are unwilling to stick out their necks to preserve the roots of Western democracy and freedom begun with their Magna Carta.
Soon Tony Blair will be wearing a 'coffee filter' hat, and his wife the latest Soho-stylish chador, as they curry favor with their mocking invaders.
I suggest the Brits either stop the Islamic onslaught upon their 'green and pleasant land' while it is still manageable, or get ready for something that will make the IRA's bloody campaigns look like mincing tea parties.
To add another Churchill-ism:
"Victory at all costs, victory in spite of all terror, victory however long and hard the road may be; for without victory there is no survival."
Yisacharov gave a nervous chuckle and said, "I don't think he means a real Jihad”
of course not, he means more of those fake suicide bombers and more of those fake planes flying into buildings.
Well, so much for thinking!
The thing that is unbelievable is the jihadis say right up front what they mean and the western dhimmis are always telling us they mean something entirely different. G-d deliver us from the do-gooders.
