LONDON - A British Airways flight from London to New York was forced to turn back Wednesday after U.S. authorities refused to allow one of the passengers to land, saying he posed a terrorist threat, the airline said.Flight BA175 was three hours into its journey to John F. Kennedy International Airport when it was forced to turn back to London's Heathrow Airport, where the passenger was met by police.
U.S. Transportation Security Administration spokeswoman Yolanda Clark said the passenger was traveling on a French passport.
The TSA said the man was a positive match with an anti-terrorism watchlist.

The question I'd like to ask is, why do these flights departing Heathrow always get (not just a little, but three hours!) airborne before they realize these passengers of interest are on board?!

This is a tactic used to defuse a potentially lethal situation in Airports everywhere. Just think about it; if your passenger draws a hit from the terrorist link then the airport will be evacuated planes de-boarded, schedules delayed and just total chaous through out and if others are with him they become lost in the crowd cowering to escape; on the other hand if you let him board and the flight takes off with no problem then anyone else with him can continue their journey on other ventures and airlines, once in the air the FAM (he is the one in a suit and tie) closes in and bam no where to go no way to warn others that we know:)
Chuck, I just about see your logic but I don't think these things are planned. I believe that of they are on the "do not fly list" they are supposed to stop them boarding.

A short update on the new site project.
Rabbit is currently busy putting all the information on the "clearinghouse" site. Once everything is given the final approval, it will be moved "Babypasta".
I can say, from all the information that was sent in and all the hard work everyone put in to this, it's going to be fantastic. I sent over 5 hours worth of data. And, have a couple more hours to send tonight.
The Mission Statement is completed, just putting 1 change in, But, it is exactly what the group stated they wanted us to represent. George Mason did a wonderful job on putting this together.
Now, the next section I would like to add is going to be called "The Experts Corner".
If everyone could forward over to me articles from the likes of Robert, Hugh, Daniel Pipes, Michelle Malkin, Ali Sina, Steve Emerson, Victor Hanson, etc., we will make a space for those.

Allowing a passenger to board a plane and take off is just asking for trouble. On a transatlantic flight, the airplane is fully laden with fuel. If a terrorism scenario develops at an early stage of the flight, the mind boggles at the catastrophe.
Then there is the matter of economics. A plane diverted half-way through its flight, is not a measure that airlines can go on tolerating.
This whole business of being alert for terrorists, overwhelmingly RoPs, is causing huge damage to the economies of the West.
The british authorities questioned the suspected moroccan and then let him go....
I would have just kept quiet about the whole thing,wait for the guy at the NY airport and arrest him,or kept an eye on him to see who he contacted and then arrest him and his american buddies.
What did you expect? It's one thing to arrest a supporter at a football match who shouts "The referee's a w****r" than a terrorist suspect. British Law is almost Sharia Law these days
This is another nonsense story. As you can see the British police (rated amongst the finest in the world) let him go after extensive questioning.
I thinks every so often the US simply wants to let off steam, want to show that they are in charge of their own country.
I think this is the only explanation. If he is wanted by the US why not let it land in the US and nab him there.
The US needs to think seriously abot the consequences of affecting the schedule of over 300 people going about their normal business.
I wonder what would happen if someone severly pissed off about having to turn back decided to sue the US admin about their conduct....and saying "well then don't come" doesn't cut it for me.

It's just plain silly to suggest the US just wants to "let off steam" in these cases. No doubt US authorities ARE considering the inconveniences these groundings cause.
Furthermore, you have to consider that once someone is on our shores, there are many legal entanglements that come into play. In many cases it is just easier to block someone from entering the country than to open that can of worms and wait till they land in the US.
BTW, you can't sue the US government for these policies, but you CAN thank bin Laden for them.
Don't expect counter-terrorism to be an exact science, there will be mistakes made, and situations and inconveniences such as these. That's the world we live in - we're not going to risk another 9/11 on account of complaints such as yours, no matter how reasonable they may be.
And remember, entering my country is a privelege, not a right.
