This seems quite likely. From the Telegraph, with thanks to Jeffrey Imm:
The controversial policy of detaining foreign terrorist suspects without trial was a key tool in preventing Britain from being attacked by al-Qa'eda militants, senior security officials believe. The officials say that the emergency measure, introduced after the September 11 attacks on America, deterred scores of terrorists from entering the United Kingdom, and they fear that ending the policy will increase the chances of an attack here.Charles Clarke, the Home Secretary, told the Commons last week that he was bowing to a law lords ruling to end the detention of foreign nationals suspected of threatening national security.
In future terrorist suspects, including those with British nationality, would be subject to a wide range of "executive control" orders, including house arrest and electronic tagging. The officials said they would have to "wait and see" whether the powers would be as effective.
One security official added, however, that the threat from terrorism was as "real today as it was in the immediate aftermath" of the World Trade Center attacks. He said: "The terrorists knew that they could be detained indefinitely and so in many cases they stopped entering the country. It was simple but effective."
I grew up in Italy at the height of Communist terrorism, when someone was brutally murdered on the street virtually every day. I know what terrorism is like. I know that it is an enemy that cannot be reasoned with and can only be faced and defeated. And still I say that the British judges were right and that the detention-without-trial law was an atrocity. We cannot fight our enemies by debasing ourselves to their level. We have to fight not only for, but through, the law. If we lose, we lose. But if we make ourselves as bad as our enemies, if we descend from the level of political and legal morality for which we are fighting, then we have lost before we start. We are at war, nobody is denying that. And in war people die. What is important is that justice should not.
What about the 4 they just let go?.....seems their profile deepens daily......beleived to have trained in terrorists camps?.....my preference here would be to follow Michelle Malkin's internment suggestion......as stated we are at war and drastic measures are required.....how long before vigilantiasm is resurrected?.....let me express that not all are evil and mis-lead, they will need protection from us soon?.....seen CAMP PERRY on Lake Erie, it was not bad.....still their as a matter of fact.......hey we have to start somewhere dont we?........
Bush to speak at 1pm est., free Iraq:-).
Lets hope our Allies remain forever grateful and that we strive together forming our bonds forever more.
Tony Blair, the terrorist friend or is he blackmailed by the Muslims.
This just in from my English Correspondent:
A good article in the DT
They died – and now we sneer
By Leo McKinsry
Any objection to mass immigration or the destruction of traditional Judaeo-Christian moral values is deemed as racist, akin to support for fascism. As a result, in the name of multi-cultural tolerance, we have allowed the creation of the brutal, anti-democratic monster of Islamism in our midst.

Methinks the DT editors are reading Jihad Watch..
The MSM, in Britain atleast, is catching on to the dangers of islam. Late, but I hope not too late.
If we lose, we lose
This is 4,000 years of Western civilisation we are trying to secure, not a game of Parcheesi. If we lose, the Geneva Conventions, the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, and the US Constitution will be torched at the annual World Sharia Conference in New Mecca where New York used to stand.
Giaour
That can't be true; it wasn't reported by the BBC.
Charles Martel:If we lose, the Geneva Conventions, the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, and the US Constitution will be torched at the annual World Sharia Conference in New Mecca where New York used to stand.
Too true. This is not WWII; It is a far more serious threat then that.
Despite all the gruesome beheadings by muslims, which are truly barbaric, it is the assault on freedom, that really fills me and others on JW, with "blind" hatred. What the islamists are doing, is to shutdown freedom of expression, using murder or fear of murder, as a tactic. We cannot allow this. Hating the enemies of freedom is not a hate crime. In fact it is a righteous obligation.

Thanks for posting that op-ed from the DT, DP. At this point, we may have to depend on the DT to achieve justice for the New Jersey Copts, as our own spineless media couldn't care less about it.

I cannot agree with you. This is a war for the defence of Freedom, and in this war we cannot afford to lose, for this unique civilisation will not rise up again for another thousand years. Why unique? For this is the only one, that by design or happenstance, places the individual, rather then a tribe, ethnicity or confessional status, at its centre.
This is not a war of terrrorism. Terrorism is but a tactic, to impose on us dhimmitude ie servility and to subvert Freedom to sharia. In a war of such importance, it maybe necessary to temporarily remove constitutional freedoms, till the enemy is vanquished. We did as much in Britain in WWII for the duration of the war, against the Nazis. When they bombed our civilian cities, we gave back to the Germans more then they bargained for. There are no niceties in a war, particularly this one. We have to win, if not for us, then for future and yet unborn generations. And in such a war, there are no holds barred; the only thing that matters is to win. After victory, we can apologise, and even give some reparations, but only after we have won and secured Freedom, not just for us, but for many muslims trapped in a culture due to birth.
Paolo, just in passing, I was in Italy at the time of Left Wing terror. There is no comparison to what we face now. Communism though evil in its implementation, was at the very most utopian in its desire. Besides, it was a rational construct. The war with Islamic Jihad is quite another matter. Why do you think that a person as sagacious and world wise as Orianna Fallachi, is so concerned for the future of Italy, and Western civilisation. She absolutely hates islam and quite rightly so.
Paolo,
I hope you dont take my missive in anyway hostile. I have many friends in Italy, some of whom we will be visting yet again in a month or so, and they are just as concerned as I'am.
Suzan: Thanks. Here is another article in the DT worth reading.

I'm now more satisfied that I did not donate any funds to UN charities, but instead gave to a charity that helps those who really need it.
www.barnabusfund.org
It is a fact that the UN top slices a significant percentage as administation fees. You know all those incompetant but highly paid UN bureuacrats are also deserving of our charity.

Catherine: Thank you.
WE WILL WIN.
The DT is stepping up its campaign in highlighting the danger of islam.
There is no doubt they will be deluged with letters from muslims and their apologists. The DT like any public organisation cannot continue in the face what it perceives as public opposition to its editorial policy. I'm also sure there is an internal battle taking place within the DT as regards its present stance. The Editor will be under immense pressure from government, big business, letters from muslims and the LLL, to abandon this stance. The Editor needs our support.
We have often complained at the lack of involvement of the MSM on the major issues of this war. The DT is the exception.
It is up to us all, to offer support.

Losing is not an option. My family will not be under islams curse. There are people in the US who will fight this until their last breath, I am in their number.
If we lose, we lose? La di dah, no big deal, ho hum, eh? Wish I could be so flippant, but I can't.
The way I see it, if we lose, we lose a life worth living. We gain a hell on earth. It won't be a life, it will be an existence. Just barely. Look around at Islamic countries. Who in their right mind wants that everywhere?
Existing in humiliation, poverty, backwardness, degradation, in fear of being beaten, tortured, imprisoned or gruesomely murdered over the tiniest slight that some puffed-up, backward Muslim might feel.
Sorry, Paolo, I don't think you understand our enemy. You think they are impressed with us worrying about how we look? That they respect us for obsessing about following our laws to the letter? They laugh themselves silly over our stupidity. They take advantage of this. It is a weak, soft belly that they will strike. Their bloodthirsty, murderous, psychopathic "god" tells them to. Our laws weren't created to deal with Islam properly. It is suicide to rely on our laws, so it calls for extraordinary measures. We may not be doing things in the best way yet, we may be fumbling, making mistakes, refining things, but that's better than rolling over and dying.
The Law is the Law is the Law. Civil liberties should be upheld as long as we can afford to do so. But can we?
With Islam being the enemy and our leaders still kowtowing to the Saudi's for oil and money we do have 'a situation'...
Civil liberty shysters are gearing up to claim compensation for "victims of Gitmo"- this morning in the news a Melbourne shyster spoke very eloquently about the 'injustice' done to Habib (just released and repatriated with a private plane and large entourage), another 'innocent' Muslim cought in Afghanistan who was trying to find a 'good Muslim School' for his kids.
Hicks, this 10 time loser is still in Gitmo, but soon to be released. Of course the 'Mufti of Sydney'- Sheik Halali makes every effort to give them a 'warm welcome.
I say this: Civil liberties yes, but not for those who are so obviously determined to destroy everything that we believe in. Those who are willing to kill for the sake of a 7th century beduin tribal-phantasy of conquest and booty have no place in our society.I think it is irresponsible to allow these would be murderers back into society. They should have been shot, end of story.
I have a civil liberty to travel to work in safety, to earn my living in safety, to leave my daughter in school in safety, to worship in safety, to take my family out and about in safety.
If these detentions and the constant vigilance of every right-minded person in the country have prevented a terrorist attack then they have been justified. Do it again if necessary.
My liberty to say what I like, behave how I like, is curtailed already, I have no respect for those who mean my family harm.
