In Angry Waves, the Devout See an Angry God

In Islam Unveiled, I discuss a recurring phenomenon of Islamic history: when disaster of any kind strikes, it is all too frequently interpreted as having been caused by a failure on the part of the people to be Islamic enough. So the result is a renewed fervor, and new miseries for non-Muslims inside and often also outside the Islamic state in question. It is beginning to look as if the tsunami may be another occasion of this. There is nothing wrong with focusing and reforming one's actions in the face of the reality of death; the potential problem here is that when the Muslims "wake up," they will direct their attentions not only to matters of individual piety, but to that other Muslim obligation, jihad. From the Washington Post, with thanks to Anthony:

BANDA ACEH, Indonesia, Jan. 4 -- Aceh's highly influential Islamic clerics have explained the giant wave that devastated this overwhelmingly Muslim region as a warning to the faithful that they must more strictly observe their religion, including a ban on Muslims killing Muslims.

The infusion of religious meaning into the tragedy, in a province already known as Indonesia's most fervently Muslim area, suggested the consequences of the Dec. 26 tsunami could extend well beyond the death toll. The sweeping destruction has torn apart the infrastructure on the northern part of Sumatra island.

The idea that the killing on both sides of a years-old conflict between secessionist rebels and Indonesia's military helped bring divine wrath could affect the way Aceh's 4.7 million residents view the central government in Jakarta. At the same time, the devout people of this region, who seem to have embraced their clerics' views, could demand even tighter strictures in Aceh, which is already governed by Islamic law, or sharia.

The extent of Islamic influence across Aceh has been on display from the moment the wave swept in from the Indian Ocean and flattened an uncounted number of towns, villages and neighborhoods. Down almost every road, beside almost every street, mosques immediately took in refugees, setting up tents and organizing food distribution before the provincial government or international aid agencies got relief operations up and running....

"God is angry with Aceh people, because most of them do not do what is written in the Koran and the Hadith," the collected sayings and actions of the prophet Muhammad, explained Cut Bukhaini, 35, an imam. "I hope this will lead all Muslims in Aceh to do what is in the Koran and its teachings. If we do so, God will be merciful and compassionate."

Bukhaini, surrounded by refugees camping on the grounds of his Baitush Shakhir Mosque in Banda Aceh's Ulee Kareng district, said people here were guilty of forgetting their obligation to pray five times a day and of concentrating too much on earning money rather than living according to their religion. Moreover, he explained, they offended the Almighty by entering into a conflict in which "Muslims killed Muslims" in contravention of Koranic strictures....

In last Friday's sermon and in statements since then, imams have said the disaster should be a lesson to Muslims to more closely observe Islamic laws, including those governing consumption of alcohol and relations between the sexes, according to Aceh residents who attended weekly services in their mosques.

Unlike most of Indonesia, this province enforces sharia, including a ban on public sales of liquor. But the atmosphere has never been as austere nor the enforcement as complete as in other sharia jurisdictions such as Saudi Arabia.

"I think people were making love before marriage, doing bad things, forgetting to pray to God," said Jack Solong, 25, a waiter and dishwasher at a popular Banda Aceh coffee shop. "God punished us. I believe that."

The cafe owner, Haji Nawawi, 45, who pulls down his shutters three times a day for prayers, agreed. He suggested that the disaster could persuade people to intensify their observance of the faith that, except for some Chinese Buddhists and central Sumatran Christians, nearly all of them share.

"Before the tsunami, all the people were full of bad conduct," he said. "Boys were sitting close to the girls. There was corruption in the government. This was God's punishment."

A number of people interviewed Tuesday in Banda Aceh shared Nawawi's convictions.

"We have to make a lot of changes in our lives, and this is God's way of letting us know," said Hetty Meutia Dewy, an agriculture student at Bogor University and a member of the Islamic Association of Students. "The imams have said it was a warning. They said God loves the Aceh people, but the tsunami was a warning to be better people.

Neva Zarlinda, an 18-year-old high school student camped beside Baitush Shakhir Mosque, said she also viewed the disaster as a warning from God and, as a result, planned to be more observant.

"I hope that I will pray more now, because I have done a lot of wrong things," she said, hanging around the government-provided tent where she, her mother, her father and her five siblings have taken up residence. "I seldom prayed. God willing, I will pray more."

Despite her resolution, Zarlinda did not bother with the head scarf worn by many Aceh women.

The Islamic Defender Front, a militant group that flew volunteers in from Jakarta to help in the relief effort, said its members were the first to clear bodies and debris from the gleaming white Baiturhahman Mosque, the main symbol of Islam in Aceh, which rises from a broad esplanade in Banda Aceh's city center.

"The mosques are central for Muslims," said Mohammed Maksouni, 36, a leader of the group, explaining why refugees instinctively flowed into mosques after they fled the wave. "And also, the houses were destroyed but the mosques were left standing."

Ansufri Sabow, 34, another member and college lecturer on mathematics and Islamic studies, said the tsunami could "cleanse the sins of the people" as well as caution them.

"God has warned us," he said. "Wake up. Wake up. Wake up."

UPDATE: More evidence of this phenomenon comes from this historical piece in the Christian Science Monitor (thanks to BigV): "Imams on the northwest coast of Java preached that the eruption was a sign of Allah's displeasure at infidel rule, and urged a violent jihad, according to Sartono Kartodirdjo, an Indonesian historian."

shiva:

I answered your questions (with links) on the Jan. 3 "Islamic Army . . . " thread. Please let me know if you saw my post.

Did any of these people ever consider that blaming God for natural disasters is a blasphemy only slightly less heinous than harming others in God's name?

Also why is it that the 'devout' (PC for 'religious fanatic') nation of Iran suffers from such devastating earth quakes? Is that because God is a Sunni and not Shiite? Then again Muslims in Indonesia seem to have suffered the worst of all groups in the Tsunami. Maybe that is a sign that conservative Islam is the worst sin of all and that God was less wrathful towards non-Muslims?

Unfortunately this angry-weather-god mentality is not limited to Muslims. Just in the past few years I recall American fundamentalists Pat Robertson and Jerry Falwell making similar statements which blamed natural disasters in Florida and even September 11th on tolerance for homosexuals among others. The difference seems to be that most people, even other more conservative-minded Christians condemned them for such comments. How many Muslims would have the courage to condemn this profiteering on disaster by their co-religionists?

[Sorry I originally posted this under the wrong article by mistake.]

If Allah really punishes Muslims for not being fundamentalist enough why did the tsunami strike the only province in Indonesia that implements Sharia. If Allah is like these clerics claim, then Allah would have made the Tsunami hit non-sharia areas of Indonesia. Therefor what these clerics are saying makes absolutely no sense at all.

It is obvious that these particular clerics are trying to gain more social power for themselves by making the faithful more obedient to their every wish. Do what I say and you won’t get hit by another Tsunami they say. You weren’t obeying me enough so you deserved to die.

What a bunch of unethical parasites/clerics. Could a human being ever descend any lower ethically? I doubt it. They might as well loot the dead childrens bodies while they are at it.

Oh great, that is all we need, a reinforcement of their irrational thinking. Next they will be sacrificing virgins to appease the volcano god.

How any person with an operational brain in their head can refuse to acknowledge at least to themselves if not publically, that the imams and clerics are capitalilizing on a natural diaster to control and reinforce islamic loyalty is difficult to believe.

Perhaps I should change my name to ahmed and open a used car lot in muzzietown. The mind of someone who believes this allah did it lie is a mind that should enable me to rip them off blind by selling them pos cars..saying things like allah blessed this 81 civic etc etc. This is a snakeoil salesman's dream, a population of extreme gullibles.

But I regress, what is the purpose of these statements by clerics who claim that god did this? How do they know? Did allah tell them? Is it to avoid future disciplinary actions from allah if so then muslims better get in into a mosque ASAP and continually beg for their lives 24 hours a day. Or, is it more likely that the clerics and imams know this is a sham and a lie. The answer is of course they know. The purpose is to continue to propagate anti Western hate. Followers of islam are blatantly used. Note to muslims, with all that is known in science do any of these religious explanations really make any sense. Look to science and look for real logical answers to explain our world and who we are not an illogical superstitious belief. Come on, get real.

Somebody give CGW an 18k gold star for that one.

lol

These have got to be the dumbest people on the planet.

Respectfully, Mr. Spencer, I don't think this is an inherently Islamic belief. I am embarrassed to admit that one important rabbi in Israel also declared this to be the case, citing the number of young Israelis who travel to Thailand after their IDF service and who engage in "sinful behaviour". There have also been more than a few Christians saying this as well. Also, after the WTC, if I recall correctly, there were a couple of American evnagelicals who made headlines by announcing that the tragedy was a punishment from G-d.

I'm not trying to apologize for Muslims or anyone else who says something like this. I find it ludicrous that any religious leader could try and use a tragedy of any kind to make points with his own coreligionists. I just don't see it as a peculiarly Islamic belief.

The cause of the earthquake was the shift in the tectonic plates in the pacific the tsunami was the result of the earthquake. G-d ( the G-d of the Bible and the Creator ) put this all in motion at the creation but does not stand in heaven picking us off at will. To muslims, do you believe that your god is evil? He would have to be if you believe he wants to kill little children and other innocents. This was a completely natural event.

This story I already knew about.but it did not hurt to read it again. Also I know exacly what Catherine means with her line spider killer.I would just like to come to the defense of all the good spiders out there,I do not agree with genocide of spiders,so I would like Catherine to target only the Jihadi spiders.I also think we should be careful with spider as we could have some good allies amongst them.

TSOHANOAI: The Sun Bearer God. Crosses the sky every day lugging the sun on his back. When he gets home he hangs it on a peg, where it remains until it's time for the next morning's commute.
Was absent father of twin War Gods NAYANEZGANI and TOBADZISTSINI, to whom he eventually gave magic arrows to defeat the demons
NAYANEZGANI: War God known as the Killer Of Enemies.
When twin brothers NAYANEZGANI and TOBADZISTSINI were born, dad was not around. As they grew up, mother was somewhat vague. She wasn't sure if she was Goddess of the Moon or the Earth, but it was something that went round. Perhaps it was Time.
So the likely lads set off in search and came upon a mysterious hole. It led them to the underground abode of Spider Woman (See KOYANGWUTI). Well, that was a bit of luck. She knew all about their quest and warned them they were in for some nasty ordeals. Then, because Spider Woman is really a big old softy, she gave them a magic feather each.
No sooner than they had reached the surface when Pow! They were abducted by a fire-eyed chief who scared the living daylights out of them. And worse. Without their magic feathers they would not have survived the subsequent poisoning, steaming and being stuck on spikes. This was very bad manners, they thought, as they had not even been introduced, but it seemed rude to ask.
After a very tortuous time, their captor, impressed by the lads' stoical bravery, told them his name was TSOHANOAI. "Dad!" they exclaimed, and then it was family re-union time. He was so proud. "What do you want to do with your immortal lives?" "Kill Demons!" they whooped. "Good lads!" he cried, 'you've passed your physical and here are some weapons for you - sunshaft spears and lightning. Oh I'm so proud of you!"
And they all lived happily ever after. Even the fated demons couldn't complain as they all turned into harmless animals.
TAIOWA: Lazy Creator God. The only thing he made was another Creator God. SOTUKNANG As soon as SOTUKNANG was created, TAIOWA passed the buck. "Can you do me a little favor? Go and create the Universe, there's a good chap.
SOTUKNANG: Left with the thankless task of creating the universe, he roped in Spider Woman KOYANGWUTI and a couple of handy twins. They were all kept busy making the world, the sea, the stars and the air, while TAIOWA sat on his lazy behind with his feet up.
Finally the world was complete, with beautiful forests, mountains, rivers and clouds. KOYANGWUTI added the finishing touch: animals, fish, birds and people. A magnificent effort! What a shame that mankind behaved so badly. The whole world had to be destroyed.
SOTUKNANG's team sighed and tried the whole thing again. Working a little less enthusiastically than before, they made mountains, rivers, plants, clouds, animals…
Finally mankind was placed on this not-quite-so-magnificent Earth. Guess what? Widespread disobedience again. There was nothing for it but a great flood and attempt number three.
Earth. Mountains. Sky. Plants. Animals. Mankind. Disobedience. SOTUKNANG was now a little miffed. No wonder TAIOWA had passed the buck. He flooded the world and got ready to try all over again.
Finally, on the fourth attempt, mankind behaved himself. Sighs of relief all round. …
" She had lots of trouble with her mankind prototypes malfunctioning and misbehaving. After many attempts, she finally released Human Race Mk V, revision 12a. That's us.
But SOTUKNANG is keeping a very careful eye on us
And the tsanami is just a little reminder......

Subject: Opportunity as the seas recede....

It’s often been said that out of disaster comes hope and out of chaos comes opportunity. The Tsunami’s that ravaged Southeast Asia this last week exemplify both. Most notably they give the West a chance to bring hope to a forgotten people and an opportunity for the United States in the War on Terror.

For so long the third world has seen Western Powers, most notably the United States, through the prism of its ability to wage war and ability to create an exclusionary civilization. Now hundreds of sailors and marines aboard aircraft carriers, akin to floating cities are embarking on the largest operation of its kind in Southeast Asia since the Vietnam War, only this time not to wage war but to fan out and provide hope through airdrops to remote areas and clinics to save hundreds from dying of simple infections.

As rebuilding begins and entire cities start over, the opportunity arises not just to rebuild but to do so in a manner that raises up communities and improves their access to proper shelter, preventative health care, and strong civic institutions. One of the most formative pioneers of building upon disaster relief to help communities leapfrog ahead was a maverick humanitarian expert named Fred Cuny. In Guatemala, following a massive earthquake in 1976. Cuny taught villagers how to rebuild their houses with simple low cost techniques that would increase their resistance to earthquakes. In a city under siege by snipers Cuny built water purification systems in the tunnels surrounding Sarajevo that helped save the city from falling to Serb forces. He later disappeared in the Russian province of Chechnya, but the ideas he spearheaded can be applied to helping tsunami victims with great effect.

Instead of handing out aid after initial relief efforts a smarter alternative would be to sell it at a negligible amount to existing merchants. By doing so you keep the commercial sector viable in the face of new imported goods and discourage the practice seen in Somalia of merchants financing warlords and bandits as they see their existing turf threatened.

There is also an opportunity for a ravaged infrastructure to leapfrog ahead in communications by using cell phones instead of landlines, or satellite internet access in schools and windup low-power radio as a cost effective way to bring a world of knowledge to the most remote patches of land on earth.

As aid flows in we can distribute it through newly elected city councils advocating the inclusion of both disadvantaged women and religious elements of all faiths. Doing so helps ensure accountability and communal responsibility. As a Veteran of Operation Iraqi Freedom assigned to a civil affairs unit I had the opportunity to witness the formation of the local neighborhood councils where Iraqi men and women, pastors and muslim clerics began the lurching progress toward grassroots democracy, regardless of many policy blunders by senior Department of Defense officials on the national level these efforts have helped elect local leaders that are seen as both legitimate and a refreshing alternative to Baathist rule.

Every touchdown of a navy chopper delivering relief supplies to the Indonesian province of Aceh, ravaged by both Islamic fundamentalism and civil war, is a defeat for the recruiting efforts of Al Qaeda affiliates like Jemiah Islamiya. Each act of humanity by Americans weakens the rhetoric used by fundamentalists as they attempt to win the hearts and minds of the Muslim world by painting the West as an enemy to all with little regard for the humanity of others. In parts of India communities of Muslims, Christians, and Hindus that saw tension are now replete with scenes of mosques and temples turned into sanctuaries for all survivors regardless of faith.

As millions of dollars of aid flows in the opportunity to help lift communities out of poverty through micro-loan development is immense. In Bangladesh, Grameen Bank, began giving out small loans to women’s co-ops that started their own small business ranging from weaving to building stores. The program has helped villages and most notably women lift themselves out of poverty and avoid the corruption normally replete in developing countries. It’s foreign aid that even a Republican like Senator Jesse Helms could support.

When Americans resume vacationing in Southeast Asia (an even better deal given the decline of the dollar against the euro) they can help encourage fishing communities to move away from destructive practices like logging and stun fishing to sustainable eco-tourism. Joint US–Host Nation military cooperation can serve not only as a basis for improved diplomatic relations but also encourage increased human rights awareness among local military forces which in turn increases trust between citizens and the military. That trust can increase cooperation on law enforcement and counter terrorism that keeps us all safe.

Hope survives and opportunities abound to surge forward in improving humanity as disaster presents itself. America can continue to shine as the beacon of a city upon the hill but only when it remains ever vigilant that its supremacy carries responsibility to insure the well being of its citizens by being a consistent advocate of remaining committed to its ideals even when it may not be politically convenient to do so.

You are closer to the truth than think,up until recently this is exactly what they where doing. Not from far me are two volcanos,Mnt Cemeru and Mnt Bromo, they are both very active. So every so often they sacrifice a cow,and throw the head into the volcano hoping to fool the volcano god.
May be the volcano god finaly caught on he was being cheated on.

Ok, in Christianity salvation is a free gift, you cant earn it, you can only accept it.

So for some Christian to turn around and claim if life has its ups and downs, well your not holy enough, goes against what Jesus said. Jesus never said, follow me and you will never have a hard time. If that would be the case, we as people would be dammed to hell, it is only though trials that Christ is able to mold you in to his likeness. Diamonds are made under great pressure, without pressure they are just lumps of carbon.

We are to easy to led astray when you don’t know what God says about it.

Islam is different, in Islam you earn your standing before Allah.
So to keep it, you must make yourself holy and keep it that way.

The tsunami punished the bad people fits Mohammadanism, not Judeo-Christians.

The oldest trick in the book used by priest-practitioners to reinforce their social elietist standing...."it's all your fault"!
I'll have a mint, Kim.

I’ve read the posts asking for Jihadwatch readers to provide ideas for what we might do to help spread the word. From what I’ve seen so far, there are some great ideas and you have my complete support. I would suggest though that we’d be remiss in our efforts if first we didn’t recognize and show our tangible support and appreciation to Robert and Hugh for running the Jihadwatch site. They’re providing a great service and doing outstanding work--I think we should do what we can to help them continue that work.

With that said, I’M CHALLENGING ALL JIHADWATCH READERS TO DONATE $100.00 (OR WHATEVER YOU CAN) TO JIHADWATCH.ORG AND TO SEND AT LEAST ONE OF ROBERT’S BOOKS TO SOMEONE (FRIEND, FOE, FAMILY, POLITICIAN, ETC.).

There’s a donation link in the left column on the home page and a link at the top of the page for purchasing books.

Any takers?

This is typcial apocalyptic bullshit we have come to expect from religiously-insane Christians (about 20% of them) and religiously-insane Muslims (about 80% of them.)

Remember when Jerry Falwell said that he blamed the terror attacks of 9-11 on the homosexuals, the feminists, the abortionists, and the ACLU? (That's a rhetorical question. Of course most of you don't remember, since Falwell is a republican.) It was so outrageous that even the drug addict RUSH LIMBAUGH rebuked him, ON AIR. I remember hearing it myself.

So every time a tragedy befalls a Muslim, it "proves" that they need to be more Islamic, and every time a tragedy strikes an infidel, it "proves" that Muslims should take heed and... be more Islamic.

When the answer is always the same, no matter what the question is, shouldn't that tell the adherents something? Too bad there NO ROOM FOR QUESTIONING, DISSENSION, OR DEBATE IN ISLAM. Of course, if there WAS, Islam would've disappeared long ago. That's why the Imams and Sheiks are careful to maintain the strict control and blind obedience... if there was any real human rights or a Bill of Rights in a Muslim land, soon they would all be atheists.

Someone should ask the Imams why Allah didn't hit Israel, since there is no part of Israel farther than 30 or so miles from the sea.

No duh, dipshit. Maybe that can be explained by the little fact that you build your houses out of sticks and mud, and you build your mosques out of stone and block with no expense spared.

Reminds me of Iran... they don't have the wherewithal to build houses up to a decent seismic code, yet they have enough to build nukes. Too bad for them that they-like the "palestinians"-hate the Jooz more than they love their kids.

Wait-I've got it now!- MOSSAD sent a sub down and planted a nuke to MAKE the tsunami hit Indonesia! That's it! Remember: if it's good, praise Allah; if it's bad, BLAME THE JOOOOOZ!!!

Well, I don't blame you for being embarassed. But in defense of the way-way-less-intolerant-than-Islam Judaica and Christianity, read these parts again:

...one important rabbi in Israel...there were a couple of American evnagelicals who made headlines...

Compare that to how many Imams are using this to scare their sheep into a more radical flavor of what is already the most radical, crazy cult of murder, oppression, and mayhem in the history of the world.

In other words, don't try to equivocate Islam and Christianity/Judaica. There is no Muslim equivalent to Mother Theresa or Father Damien, or Gandhi, or Jesus, or St. Francis, et al. (i.e., "the good ones.") Maybe had the Sufi mystics been given enough free will, they could have produced someone worthy of adoration/worship, but alas... Wahhabism is replacing all the "less crazy" brands of Islam at an alarming pace.

Just wait to see what happens if muslims begin to fall ill from disease (which will come from dirty water, dead bodies etc of course) and they start reporting that the US is poisoning helpless muslims with the food and water they have donated...i guarantee that will be the next arab 'theory' to come out of the "brilliant imam think tanks"

Hate to say this, but as far as I'm concerned, Allah can kill as many of his slaves, er, believers as he wants to.

Just leave the rest of us alone, please.

Matthew 6:7

But when you pray, go away by yourself, all alone and shut the door behind you and pray to your Father secretly, and your Father who knows your secrets, will reward you.

Don't recite the same prayer over and over as the heathen do, who think prayers are answered only by repeating them again and again. Remember, your Father knows exactly what you need even before you ask him!

What a difference between the Christian prayer and the salaat.
http://muslim-canada.org/salaat.html

Like so many people of so many persuasions, it sounds like the crazy Imams are using this tragedy as a way to further their agenda. No matter what good or bad comes as a reward to virtue or vice, it's ALWAYS a handy place for a commercial. Stop me if this sounds familiar...

Clerics of all persuasions from the beginning of time have used this as evidence to motivate their followers: usually to repent. The definition of and practical application of repentance varies.
In contrast to all other organized religions, many Muslim clerics, however, will use this a a motivation for the furtherance of violence and murder, which to jihadis is a form of religious obligation.

Peace is the absence of enemies and they will gain favor in Allah's eyes and peace when we are all dead!

These guys are friggin' unbelievable. "FOOLS!! DON'T YOU SEE? THE ANSWER TO EVERYTHING IS MORE ISLAM. MORE SHARIA LAW AND MORE ISLAM. MORE PRAYER TO THE PAGAN MOON-GOD ALLAH! YEA, THAT'S THE TICKET!!!". Truly a waste of time, matter and space these imams are.

This would probably be the Negrito North Sentinalese, who were the original inhabitants of the Andaman Islands. There are only a few hundred left - I hope they were not too badly hit. They are still in the Stone Age; they have their own island and have no contact with the outside world. The British arrived in the Islands and used them as a political penal colony for Indian rebels. The Negritos (who look exactly like African pygmies) were employed to hunt down escaped convicts; they were paid in opium and rum. The Negrito race was almost completely wiped out by sexually transmitted diseases and other ailments which had been foreign to them. The small tribe on North Sentinel Island was never contacted by the British and somehow survived. The Indian government does not go there because they know the little tribe has no immunity to outside diseases. It is an incredible place, think of it... a Stone Age island completely isolated from the rest of the world! It's like something out of a movie! These people have been firing arrows at every stranger for the last 500 years -Good luck to them! Bloody Indians and Brits get everywhere! The poor bastards don't know what's going on probably, first they were hit with a wave and then the skies are full of Indian Army helicopters.

For more info on the almost extinct Negrito race...

I once caught a glimpse of another tiny Negrito tribe in the jungles of Middle Andaman - they are blackest human beings I have ever seen in my entire life. The native (Christian) Nicobarese are completely different. Still, I don't know why we're talking about this again. Nothing to do with Islam! Thanks for the link though.

The small Rengma Naga tribe of northeast India do not blame earthquakes on mortal sin. They believe that the sky is male and that the earth (his wife) is female. Every few years the sky gets horny and has intercourse with his wife, of course, this makes the earth shake. I believe that this is a far more realistic and probable explanation of earthquakes than those proposed by seismologists and Muslims.

I'm sure you're more up-to-speed than I am on the status of the islanders, but from everything I've heard, somehow the tribes of these islands managed to survive relatively intact (I guess they can tell from aerial reconnaissance). One report I read said that the islanders are so cued in to natural phenomena that they may have been able to have their own kind of advance-warning system and avoid total devastation of their population. Interesting, isn't it? I know it has nothing to do with islam, but the image of the guy with the bow and arrow was just too compelling. I don't think THAT tribe would knuckle under to da'wa - by word or by the sword - too easily.
