MENA, Saudi Arabia (Reuters) - Haj pilgrims pelted stones at symbols of the devil on Friday, with many saying they were targeting President Bush and other world leaders seen as oppressing Muslims.Last year, 250 people were crushed to death at Mena's Jamarat Bridge, but so far new measures by the Saudi authorities have averted any stampedes. This year, more than 2.5 million Muslims streamed into the area for the stoning, meant as an act of purification and rejection of temptation.
Saudi Arabia's King Fahd and Crown Prince Abdullah, in a joint speech, urged Muslims to shun terrorism which they said meant "warring against God and his Prophet," to follow Islam's teachings of moderation and forgiveness and to unite.
Many pilgrims said they were thinking of Bush and his allies while they were hurling pebbles at the site where the devil is said to have appeared to the biblical patriarch Abraham.
"Yes, the devil is Bush and that other one from Israel -- (Prime Minister Ariel) Sharon. And there's (British Prime Minister) Blair too," said Egyptian Tia'amah Mohammed.
"We throw the stones so we can vent our anger at them."
Many Muslims revile Bush for his perceived bias toward Israel and the U.S. occupation of Iraq. Anger at Sharon also runs deep over Israel's occupation of Palestinian land and Jerusalem, the site of one of Islam's holiest shrines.
British journalist Yvonne Ridley, who converted to Islam following her capture by the Taliban in 2001 in the buildup to the Afghan war, said: "During the stoning I couldn't help thinking of Bush, Blair and Sharon."
Syrian Ibrahim Hussein added: "I was throwing stones at the devil because through that we cleanse ourselves of sin. When throwing the stones you shouldn't be thinking of political issues, or Bush and Sharon -- that's for our prayers (against them)."

THE Chinese state-run propaganda machine is cashing in on the terror attacks in New York and Washington, producing books, films and video games glorifying the strikes as a humbling blow against an arrogant nation.
Video discs filled with lurid images along with dramatic opera music and even the theme from Jaws have flooded the nation's markets in the wake of the attacks.
Disc after disc bear the imprimatur of the Communist Party-controlled media. The most popular DVDs have been produced by the Xinhua information agency, Beijing Television and China Central Television.
Communist Party officials say President Jiang Zemin has obsessively watched and re-watched pictures of the aircraft crashing into the World Trade Centre. In the immediate aftermath of the attacks, workers at Beijing Television worked round-the-clock to produce a documentary they called Attack America.
Scenes from Hollywood films have been spliced between shots of the events of September 11, including footage from the 1998 remake of Godzilla, in which a monster destroys New York buildings.
As rescue workers pick through the rubble of the twin towers, the commentator proclaims that the city had reaped the consequences of decades of American bullying of weaker nations.
He said: "This is the America the whole world has wanted to see. Blood debts have been repaid in blood. America has bombed other countries and used its hegemony to deny the natural rights of others without paying the price. Who until now has dared to avenge the hurts inflicted by unaccountable Americans."
Officials at Beijing Television defended the video as an educational film that will meet market demand. A producer said: "There's this need for more information on world terrorism in the market, so we've got to meet it."
At the country's most respected bookstore, Xinhua Book Shop on Beijing's busiest shopping street, Wanfujing, crowds jockeyed around a table to buy discs. According to staff, thousands of copies of the video have been sold in the past month.
The shop assistant said: "Before people were interested in the movies but this is more compelling. What happened in New York could have happened in a movie but this is real life. It's better."
The many shops that stock pirated DVDs compiled in China and Hong Kong report that their most popular products are similar productions that use video graphics to show the United States suffering other damaging attacks on its tallest buildings and military installations.
On the unofficial films the commentary is even more callous: "Look at the panic in their faces as they wipe off the dust and crawl out of their strong buildings - now just a heap of rubble. We will never fear these people again, they have been shown to be soft-bellied paper tigers."
Elsewhere music shops are selling out of a bootleg version of the summer's top pop hit. The amended song implies that America deserves to suffer for its disregard for the point of view of countries weaker than itself.
The refrain says: "We guys are all Americans, our government is used to bullying people. We guys always have our hands on too much, this time our own people got hurt."
Bush needs to target his missiles at China too.

U.S. Penalizes Chinese Firms for Iran Missile Aid

WASHINGTON -- The Bush administration has quietly applied new sanctions against eight Chinese companies for helping Iran with its missile programs, a senior U.S. official said Tuesday.
The official, speaking on condition of anonymity, confirmed a report in The New York Times that said the State Department had served notice to the Chinese firms early this month. A North Korean company was also penalized. The official said the sanctions prohibit the companies from doing business in the United States, and ban them from obtaining licenses that allow them to export or obtain a patent for American technologies.
One of the companies was Norinco, China's biggest state-owned weapons maker. In May 2003, Washington sanctioned Norinco after accusing it of aiding Iran's long-range missile program. The company denied the accusation.

Israeli Aid Arrives in Sri Lanka and Indonesia

About three weeks after the natural disaster in Southeast Asia, an EL AL plane flew to Sri Lanka and Indonesia, carrying 85 tons of emergency aid materials, donated by Israeli organizations and companies.
The plane landed in Colombo, Sri Lanka, with equipment for emergency kitchens donated by the National Council for Voluntarism, Koach Latet, and the United Kibbutz Movement. The kitchens will provide hot meals for some 4,000 people a day. In addition, these organizations and Magen David Adom donated medical equipment to set up a mobile clinic. Along with that arrived another medical delegation specializing in trauma, which will give a week-long seminar to local professionals.
From Colombo, the plane continued to Indonesia, and unloaded there 75 tons of emergency materials, among them 16 tons of baby food, 20 tons of medicines, 30 tons of rice flour, water, sugar and grains, plastic sheeting and more, donated by various trade companies.
The local officials expressed their great appreciation for the Israeli aid, that will reach, amongst others, thousands of orphans who lost their families in the disaster

I rather get the impression that forgivness is not big in the Koran, especially for women who don't keep up with the moral virtue. Otherwise all those poor girls in Nigeria and Iran facing stoning once their babies are weaned would not be in such danger.

Did anyone esle catch the "Bullsh*t" in the western media about the Hajj proving that Islam is the fastest growing religion on Earth.
The claim was that 500,000 more people attended the ritual than the previuos recorded high several years ago.The fact is that the Hajj is a "Once in a life" expected part of the five pillars of Islam( sorry,5 parts of the idolatry that focuses on cleaning the body and not the heart) and only shows the Muslims that hadn't done it yet and in no way reflects the conversion rate.
But when you consider the rise in Militant Islamic violence against all people that don't fit into their version of Islam,it appears that Muslims now fear the extremists and the Hajj will be insurance to help prove they are one of the "True" Muslims and not one of those "Bad" Muslims from that Mosque down the road from theirs.
I'd like to see proof of these claims since the rate at which Islamists are slaughter other Muslims seems to negate any growth,plus some Imams assert that you're born a Muslim so a Muslim couple with two kids would mean a 100 percent increase in their growth.
It's like the tripe about Aids,in the begining of the issue demands for funding were based on numbers so when the cases went from lets say
200 to 300 ,the Gay lobby claimed there was a crisis since there was a 50 percent increase.
