In Islam, the emphasis is on purity. The emphasis here is not so much on the fact that this poor woman is a victim, but that she sullies the purity of the community. PESHAWAR: A tribal jirga in Sindh has decided to kill a woman doctor who was allegedly gang raped in Sui to restore the “lost honour” of her tribe, a Pakistan Medical Association (PMA) official told a press conference on Wednesday. PMA President Dr Umer Ayub said the husband and in-laws of the doctor had told him of the jirga or local council’s decision in Gumbat Khairpur. He demanded the members of the jirga be arrested, and the alleged rapists of the doctor be hanged at Minar-e-Pakistan to deter such crimes. He criticised the federal interior minister for not visiting the woman doctor and her family. He also slammed the NWFP Assembly for not condemning the alleged rape.
Oh gawd! Here we are, in the year 2005, but you'd never know it, from stories such as these. So a woman gets raped, and she's to blame for bringing the community's "honour" into disrepute. I really don't get the logic of this reasoning. I'm trying, but I just can't wrap my mind around this concept.

And as for how a woman avoids rape, well she never ventures out of the house unless she is wearing a portable marquee and has a male escort. And even then she has her private parts sewn up, underneath a chastity belt.
And this is a doctor, a woman whose very reason for being out and about is to help the sick. Possibly the very men who raped her, or their families. At least the Pakistan Medical Association are on her side.

Read "The Arab Mind" by Raphael Patai. It's an old book but it explains the Arab psyche, and the Arab psyche is part and parcel of Islam, so it permeates muslims whether they're Arabs or not.

Honour Killing does happen in Pakistan... but it has nothing to do with Islam... It's in the culture of these people... These illiterate people were hindus few hundred years ago and were then converted to Islam. Does anyone remember the NBC prime-time TV story called "Forbidden Love" on the program Dateline NBC??? the young beautiful girl named Jaswinder Kaur (Jasse) who was born and lived in Vancouver, Canada and was then murdered by her relatives(mom and uncle) for having a love affair with a rickshaw driver??? they were not Muslims... its just in the subcontinent culture...

Would it do any good to point out how widespread so-called "Honour Killings" are throughout the Arabic/Islamic Middle East? Although honour killings were widespread in Hindu lands at one time, they are less so now. The same can not be said about Arabic countries. Honour killings are currently practiced on a regular basis in all Arabic countries. Particularly among Muslims.
I believe honor-killings were even done in Sicily. Difference is that Islam accommodates and shelters it. Like FGM, it is a great way to control and subjugate women, so they're not about to ban or restrict such a handy tool. Or at least not, too actively. If they don't come out and outright encourage it, they don't exactly come down hard on the perps. Slaps on the wrist at most. If honor-killing happens in non-Islamic societies it is an aberration or a leftover from an earlier, backward time; and has people working at stopping it, if they haven't stopped it already. As we all know, Islam has no intention of moving forward from those backward times. It likes festering away there, and insists on dragging everybody back there with them.
