NEW YORK Lawyers for Mohammed Ali Hassan al-Moayad, a Yemini sheik charged with raising money for terrorism said American officials canceled visas this week for four men who were expected to become defense witnesses when testimony was set to begin.Al-Moayad and his aide Mohammed Mohsen Yahya Zayed are accused of raising money for al Qaeda and Hamas at Brooklyn Mosques and other places. Opening statements in their trial at Brooklyn Federal Court are expected on Jan. 25.
During a hearing on Monday, Johnathan Marks, Zayed's lawyer told Judge Sterling Johnson Jr. that he was told the visas for the men, who were from Yemen, had been canceled for national security reasons, The New York Times reported in Tuesday editions. William Goodman, a lawyer for al-Moayad, said he believed the visas were canceled the night before the trial was to begin....
Marks had written in prior filings that the Yemini witnesses could help bring a defense of entrapment by testifying Zayed had no inclination to support terrorism.
He wrote that one witness would testify that Zayed was opposed to the ``hooligans who claim to represent Islam but in reality distort Islam.''
Now that's interesting. I'd like to see him prove it. (Of course, if the judge is ignorant enough, it will be easy.)

NEW YORK -- A Yemeni sheik accused of funneling millions of dollars to terrorist networks warned U.S. agents that "Allah will bring storms" to America because of his arrest, according to newly filed court papers.
Mohammed Ali Hassan al-Moayad made the remark last year after a German court ordered him extradited to the United States to face charges he helped finance al-Qaida and Hamas, prosecutors said in the Brooklyn federal court documents.
The statements _ spoken in English to agents taking al-Moayad from Frankfurt to New York on Nov. 16, 2003 _ counter defense claims that he has no command of the language, prosecutors allege.
"Allah is with me," he allegedly told a detective. "I am Mohammed al-Moayad. Allah will bring storms to Germany and America."
Prosecutors have previously alleged al-Moayad was overheard boasting about his relationship with Osama bin Laden, saying in Arabic that bin Laden "tells me that I'm his sheik."
The government papers were filed in response to defense motions asking a judge to bar from al-Moayad's upcoming trial portions of transcripts of tapes recorded during a sting operation at a hotel in Frankfurt.

This is another example of dhimmitude--a form of suicide, in my opinion.
The interest charged on loans of all kinds is nothing more than rent; money is property like anything else. You get some money from someone, you pay rent on it, and when you are no longer using the other person's money, you stop paying rent on it.
It's a lot like renting an apartment or a car.

Note, first of all, Freddie Mac is NOT a government institution - it is a private organization who's stock is traded publicly, I assume through the NYSE (this will probably rule out any complaints about discrimination based on religious affiliation).
To find out if what Devon Bank is doing is legal, you would have to contact the State Corporation Commission of each of the states where Devon Bank is making this offer. I'm assuming it's already cleared the various SCC hurdles it would have to clear - these kinds of things are TIGHTLY regulated. Therefore I have to assume this is perfectly legal.
Another thing to consider, is that this may fall under the category of "minority lending". There may be special accommodations for minority lenders that may be otherwise inapplicable to other organizations who do not cater to minorities.
DC/Susan:
One question I'm not sure about is this:
If you applied for a no-interest loan directly from Devon Bank (not Freddie Mac), and were refused because you were not a Muslim, could you sue Devon Bank? You'll need the specific dope on this loan program to apply, obviously.
DC Watson knows an ACLU-type legal organization that might be able to answer this question, if the various SCC offices cannot.
Once again, I have to assume that Devon has covered its gluteus maximus on this, but I could be wrong.
Looks like quite a few phone calls and/or e-mails would have to be made to answers these questions for certain.
I would start with Illinois if that is where Devon Bank is based.

It is to be desired that our agreement with England on fighting the slave trade and the import of weapons to East Africa will have the shape of an international agreement. Such a document would establish limits for the expansion of the continued expansion of the Muslim and slave trading movement, by the moral impression by the accord of the two European powers so far engaged there, and also, more propably, will lead to the cooperation of the other European states engaged. I propose the exchange of notifications between us and Britain, in which we take upon ourselves the obligation, under the condition (p.412) on an equal participation of Britain for the same purpose, to fight the anti-Christian and anti-civilizatoric movement which has emerged over the last years on the African continent, and to recognize the prohibition of the export of slaves and the import of arms and ammunition as the most effective means, as it is only the possession of superior arms ans ammunitions which enables the Arab and Muslim minority to undertake slave hunts and wars necessary to obtain slaves, and to keep up the superiority of their race in Africa's interior.
The slave trade and the initiative Britain has taken to combat it, have been origin and incentive to the union of all elements interested in the matter, and which have made it possible to use Muslim fanaticism in the interest of this over one thousand years old tradition of African slave trade and to call on them for war. The effects of this movement, large and small, can be seen in the positions of the Mahdi, of Tippu Tip and in the rising number of murders of Europeans in Africa's interior. To transfer christianity and European civilization to Africa by armed force is not feasible because of the width of the country and of the climate. The indigenous population would be susceptible to the European efforts if it was not suppressed by the force of arms, the higher intelligence and the
cohesion of the Arab Muslims. We could outmatch the latter only, if we strike at the source of their superiority, superior armament and the realisation of their profits, by the suppression of the import of arms and the export of slaves.
Therefore I regard it a task no Christian nation should exclude itself from, to interrupt as far as possible the import of weapons and ammunition to Africa's interior and the export of slaves. This task shall be mainly taken care of by the two powers most interested in the Sultanate of Zanzibar, Germany and Britain; but to its complete solution it is recommended, to, soon, gain the cooperation of the neighbouring Portuguese government and of His Majesty the King of Belgium for the Congo Free State. It is also recommended to kindly ask the French government for their cooperation, in order to prevent arms import into the Congo area and in order to end the abuse of the French flag in East Africa by Arab dhows.
Your Excellency will request Lord Salisbury to confirm his approval with these opinions by a note to Sir Edward Malet, in order to cause the British navy to join in a concerted blockade of the Zanzibar coast, and, like us, but operating separately, to ask the previously mentioned governments to decree respective instructions.
