Please know that your article would in a healthy America be both allowed, which it is but ALSO rejected by most, if not all free-thinking people of good will and conscious. But America is being undermined by people just like you such that we cannot hope that your deadly poison will go away, rather it can only grow and become more destructive as time goes by.

In just a few short years, the crazy views you assert have become all but mainstream in America and Europe as greater numbers of Moslems pour into Western societies. You and the many like you are dangerous and in a position to spread the view that you share with many in the Islamic world which has brought much destruction to so many-- that is the objective, isn't it?

You can create myths and fables as well as delusional comparisons using metaphorical language designed to compare Moslem mass murders to our own historical figures. But the reality is that you are a product of the culture you are promoting, you cannot be expected to see what the belief system you are stealthy spreading really is because you are not exceptional, you are in fact very typical of what one can expect from the Moslem intellectual community and that is indeed a shame. When debate gets too hot, Islamic intellectuals and the rest cry "Hate" and "Islamophobia"!

There can never be a compatible version of Islam to the West because most of Islam's adherents are not capable of genuine intellectual objectivity or rigor and prefer rather to acclimate the West to slowly accept Islam as is, not bring human rights or justice to a supremely intolerant religion.

Many Moslems leaders choose instead to create, fabricate and manipulate, apparently a cultural trait-- all with the long term object to steal what it is that does not belong to them, that includes history itself.

They create fantastic stories such as Moslems came with Columbus to America, or early Indian tribes were Moslem influenced or Islamic Spain was an Islamic paradise, and believe the lies.

After Arabs voluntarily fled Israel almost on the day of its founding, it took some time, but the world was conditioned and made to accept the new "palestinian" people created to justify the endless violence of the jihad whose objective of course is the extermination of the Jews and the insertion of an Islamic state in the place of their historic homeland which predates Islam my thousands of years.

And the Europeans think their Moslem partners in the new Euro-Arab entity known as Eurabia can long be accomplices to the charade that multicultural thinkers have flim-flamed the citizens of post-Christian Europe to believe, that Moslems can emigrate to Europe and co-exist peacefully with their non-Moslem fellow citizens (they are sheeps to the slaughter and they don't seem to be aware of this despite the abundance of clues), please show me evidence of where this has ever worked and don't say Al- Andalus, I'm not a dhimmi yet.

All the while their Arab "brothers" looked the other way rather than accept these people as refugees, war and death preferable to joining the ranks of the human race as decent equals, not imperial conquerors hell bent on world domination.

Yet, you are called a "professor" and employed by Northeastern University and Islam is unbelievably accepted as the "Religion of Peace". Adolf Hitler said it best, "The bigger the lie, the more people will believe it."

I dare ask, how does it feel to be a fraud, a charlatan whose true feelings must be hidden as you go through life an operative to a fascist ideology whose world-wide acceptance defies logic, whose roots are drenched in blood and injustice and deception and whose legions have created a bloody world? Europe as well certainly is headed towards enslavement, starting with France, in the quest for a revival of a medieval Islamic empire. This is your great hope I would imagine.

You "Professor" Alam, should examine your conscious, but that exercise would only reinforce what you believe, that Islam has the right to enslave (to you enlighten) and convert by force all who do not abide by its more hateful, contents.

You are again a product of your civilization, you are not the exceptional, genuinely intellectual scholar and disciple of truth and knowledge as sadly few other courageous Moslems have demonstrated by HONESTLY looking at Islam.

The standard expectation that many have of Moslems is that most act in the spirit of jihad even if not engaging in acts to directly overthrow non-Moslem governments. You would agree that many would not lift a finger to prevent those acts that are committed in the name of Islam almost daily.

You partially fit that category by being a deceptive agent of corruption, BUT masquerading as teacher of knowledge. There is much for you to be ashamed of here and more for us to fear.

I hope you have what we call an epiphany as only Moslems themselves can begin to attempt to re-route Islam from the course which is taking all the world towards the abyss.

We have some extremely intelligent and articulate authors here who do not stoop to anything like the level of the professor above who displays little but the vileness and ignorance of an uneducated peasant. Truely, in the marketplace of ideas, the professor's work belongs in the day-old fruit bin. And the professor himslef, if I may indulge a literary leaning, would look better in what John Gay calls a "Newgate Garland."

As for Robert Spencer and crew, good on ya! Some time soon the whole of the foul rag and bone shop that is islam and its toadies too, will be seen as a pig that's worn off its lipstick, if I may be forgiven for mixing up my metaphors. No? Professor Shahid Alam is one of many primitive Muslim academics who hides behind impressive credentials but has the mentality of a scimitar-weilding jihadist. It is easy to visualize him in full Arab regalia astride a handsome steed, poised to fulfill his Islamic destiny. No matter how educated Muslims are, they're all jihadist savages at heart. He is out of his element in America---why is he here?
His prime task is to poison young American minds, as if our own distinguished, Marxist academia are not already doing an excellent job of that. His job is to plant seeds of hate and confusion, to propagate his disdain for the country in which he chose to reside, and to promote the fallacies of Muslim victimization and persecution. He and his many Saudi- funded colleagues, who are planted all over the country in our most prestigous universities, were sent here to spread their vile religion and promulgate revisionist Islamic history. Why would someone who hates America so intensely choose to live here?
This insidious charlatan should be deported. Let him teach Economics to Muslims in an Islamic country. They are in dire need of education and no American university needs a radical Muslim professor to teach Economics or anything else.

Saddam is actually a very rare name. There were a number of incidents of people calling their children Saddam Hussain after the Gulf War when he was seen as sticking up to America. But not much else before or since.

Osama is a long-established, perfectly respectable Arabic name.

Shahid (long a, short i) means one who bears witness (to the truth). Shahid (short a, long i), meaning martyr, isn't a very common name. Neither is Jihad.

As for Muhammad, the Prophet (peace and blessings upon him) is associated with many and varied virtues, not just fighting. I'm sure that for most Muslims who name their children this, they could be thinking of many things besides jihad (if the latter at all) when they name their children this.

For some reason I think rational debate should be based on concrete evidence and facts proven by accepted scientific criteria only.
I think injecting a competing religious dogma(satan etc) into the argument is counter-productive. And if it is a dominant theme in the argument it calls into question the credibility of the "research". For some that is enough to reject the conclusions, based on a knee-jerk reaction of which leftists are known to have concerning religious belief. Whether that is wise or justified is irrelevant.
I know that leftists are prisoners of their own dogmatic thinking, and that leftist theories cannot stand up to objective scientific scrutiny either. Except for one aspect--- Marx was right about the "opiate of the masses".

Of all the inappropriately named articles, M. Shahid Alam's "Testing Free Speech in America", takes the Holiday fruitcake.
Apparently Mr. Alam needs reminding that the promotion of his theories on the examination of the 9-11 attacks in Dissident Voice and Counterpunch in no way constitutes "testing free speech" in America - this is a free country where people have the right to criticize the state and its policies, no matter how ridiculous or disingenuous they may be.
As far as being "shut out" by the mainstream media, Mr. Alam's inflated sense of intellectual merit blinds him to the realization that perhaps his theories and positions simply do not merit the attention of the mainstream media. For all its failings, the media has at least shown here that it has the good, common sense to turn a deaf ear to the displacement, moral equivocation and nihilistic propaganda coming out of the mouths of pseudo-intellectuals such as Mr. Alam.
Sahid Alam imagines himself a victim of some self-imagined conspiracy to silence his "radical" positions, all the while slandering the same rights and freedoms of others to express their own positions as "hate". It is remarkable, for someone who fancies himself as an intellectual colossus, how he foolishly reveals himself, not the mainstream media or Jihad Watch or Little Green Footballs, as the TRUE enemy of free speech.

To go to a dictionary to find the meanings of my comments that alam is a vile and ignorant peasant, et c. is to miss the point so entirely that I'm not going to respond at any length. If he claims our mythologies as a way of insulting us, which seems to me to have been his purpose, then I respond by likening him not to some Marxist parody of the Nobel Savage but by refering to Alam in terms he will hate because he recognizes himself in them. If you're so free with your time that the result is leafing through your dictionary for pendantries, why not use your time instead to pas out leaflets to your neighbors to show them what the professor says about those who murdered ours? Or, if you really must pick pedantically, figure out the purpose of the post before you do so. You got the diefinitions right but you missed entirely the meaning. So what's your gain? And what more do your neighbors and community members know about this monster in there midst? all you've done is piss me off.

I have right wing friends who smoke weed, take x, and voted Bush; i have left wing friends who are very religious and others who are totally non-religious.
Things are just not that neat and it helps to remember, i think, that each fingerprint is different. No two of us are alike, and our understandings or awarenesses of reality are equally diverse; categorization into left, right and center, while useful, is also deceiving.

We have found common cause, an enemy that we all, from our various places, recognize, and together we will fight, and win.

Let's cut each other some slack, give each other some respect, and appreciate those, from wherever they are on the political spectrum, who are with us in this defining battle for the future of civilization on this planet.

Granted, bits my own response border on the hyperbolic: the PUK ought to be as subject to ethical criticism as any other band of angry men with guns. Nonetheless, there are still startling differences between them and Al-Qaeda, and the differences are a direct consequence of their governing ideologies. The point I'm trying to get through to the good professor here is that not all violent movements are created equal, nor are all responses to "oppression," whether real or perceived... a principle I've always thought was self-evident, speaking from the left.

I keep making this distinction to my fellow leftists, asking the same leading questions I ask the professor, and none of them ever seem to get it. There is something terribly wrong in my house...

In light of your recent article drawing a comparison between the 9/11 hijackers and America's Founding Fathers, I'm curious how you feel about the Kurdish resistance movement in Iraq, Iran, Syria, Jordan and Turkey? In case you're not familiar with their cause (and I suspect you aren't), I'll let you in on a little secret. They've been doing exactly what you demand; that is, they have been acting against "American surrogates in their own countries," and doing so "politically and with courage" for almost 30 years now. Their plight as the largest population of displaced Muslims in the Middle East is a direct consequence of Ottomon, British and French colonialism. Arguably, they have every reason in the world to consider the West an adversary; after all, we supported (and continue to) many of the regimes that have been oppressing them. Especially in Iraq; we were backing Saddam when he gassed their people at Halabja, and we double-crossed them by reneging on our pledge to back their revolution in 1991. So, if any group of oppressed and impoverished Muslims has just cause to be mad at us, it's the Kurds.

Yet, isn't it curious that they've never done any of the things that the people you're defending did? They never hijacked airplanes. They never issued fatwas calling for the death of all Americans everywhere. They never made or distributed snuff films of the gruesome execution of their captives. They never targeted humanitarian aid workers or election organizers. They never claimed their plight was the result of a Zionist conspiracy. They never made the arrogant claim that they spoke for all Muslims everywhere. They never tried to export their revolution to Western streets; no, instead, they sent emissaries to the West, begging for help from both private sector and government quarters. They saw outsiders as potential allies, not metaphysically evil demons. In the areas of Iraq they managed to take over, they didn't create a police state, like al-Sadr and Zarqawi did; rather, they created a multi-party secular democracy with free speech rights, secular government and equality for women.

In other words, they behaved in every regard like a band of true freedom fighters, having much more in common with America's Founding Fathers than did the 9/11 hijackers (who in fact had absolutely nothing in common with them, except perhaps for their endorsement of slavery).

Now, professor, remember -- the Kurds are all Muslims. They've been directly oppressed for nearly a century by the forces of colonialism, and after that, by Western support of Arab dictators. Yet, they don't act like the hijackers of 9/11 or the throat-slitting butchers of Fallujah.

And my question to you is, why? After all, if your analysis is correct, the two groups would seem to have much in common. Yet, there is a stunning contrast in their tactics and their rhetoric. What is the source of that contrast, professor? Have you even noticed it?

It's also worth remembering that other liberation movements by oppressed people did not act like your heroes. South Africans didn't do any of this. Neither did Europeans under communist rule. Or the Indians under British rule. Nor are the Tibetans doing it today.

Again, I ask you, why? What is the cause of this stunning difference, professor?

There's a simple answer: the cause is ideology. Genuine liberation movements like the Patriotic Union of Kurdistan are galvanized by progressive ideals, and they act accordingly. Death squads like those you defend are motivated by reactionary ideals, and they, too, act accordingly.

The only political movements that have ever engaged in the kinds of violence you defend are right-wing ones. The Nazis did this, both before and after they seized power. The Ku Klux Klan did this sort of thing. The 9/11 hijackers and "insugents" of Iraq are just the same.

THEY ARE RIGHT-WINGERS, professor. Autocrats and fascists commited to a reactionary ideology of the Master Faith. I daresay, they have duped you with their taqqiya.

The 19 men who hijacked those planes were not the Jeffersons and Madisons of Islam. No, professor, they were its Nathan Bedford Forrests and its Adolph Hitlers. So are the false "insurgents" of Iraq, who never showed any courage when there was a real tyrant running the place. The fact that you seem unable to distinguish right-wing death squads (the people your article defends) from genuine freedom fighters (the civilized Kurdish resistance you ignore) discredits anything you have to say on the subject of politics. The point as it began was that Alam is festering because of what he percieves as personal criticism,and his spewing was generating some publicity. In my own cute little way I tried to turn up the pressure on him since he obviously reads comments here to fuel his rage. It would have been lovely if others had built up the fury for him so he continued to rant in public. instead, off we went to the dictionary to quibble, leaving the professor to find something to scream about somewhere else. So, at the end of the day, what did we gain?
