kj, I'm not for sheding a drop of American or other free -world blood for Iran or Iranians. Iraq has proven that the majority of people of that region have no appreciation for freedom or desire to be liberated from Islam.

I'm also definitely NOT in favour of any more invasions. They've been a waste of time - even if there were connections between Laden and Afghanistan and Iraq, which is not certain even now. Iran getting a bomb might be a different matter, but it's probably better to simply cut off that part of the world and let them find their own solutions to their problems.

As Western dependency on Middle Eastern oil declines with the advent of fuel cell and electrochemical technology (notably, Europe produces a fair bit of its own and even the US only gets something like 30% of its supply from the Middle East), so the West can dissociate itself from Middle Eastern issues unrelated to the survival of Israel. If the islamic nations choose to stew in their own juice, then that literally is none of our concern.

To bad the West is pushing forward full at throttle to become the newest islamic nations. Far from disassociating itself from the Middle East, the West is being colonised by it.

As far Israel goes, I think it absolutely crazy that the whole world is so concerned about a nation that wouldn't fill some counties in Texas. Besides Israel can take care of herself. Belizarius, you've got a point there: islamism is on the rise in the US. At the same time, though, it's also believed that something like 15-20% of all muslim immigrants to the West end up secularising, converting or simply abandoning their religion altogether, presumably within one generation. To say nothing of "re-converts" to Christianity and Judaism; those 'rediscovering' their religion. That's a lot of people, and a far, far higher percentage more than would ever convert to islam from any other religion. Demographically speaking, it'll never survive - certainly not in its present form. I say this not from idle optimism, but from the numbers themselves.

You have probably already read the latest story here "When Freedom gets the Death Sentence" but if not yet you might be interested by one of the comments, on the second page of the Deutsche Welle report about honour murders that :-
"most of the murders are often carefully plotted in the family with the support of all, including women. Usually the patriarch selects the youngest son to carry out the crime because he knows that judges in Germany don't usually give the maximum sentence of 10 years to a minor for manslaughter,"
There's method to this.

What it seems to describe is how the traditional extended family structure, as is know from Latin America to Africa to Southern Europe to India, might function if the pressure of law and morality were totally removed - if, that is, only the power and prestige of the family mattered. And OF COURSE the women would be as bad as anyone else in wanting the blood debt paid: every hour that the blood traitor lives is one more denial of their sick system of values and of the lifelong consent they have given to their own oppression.

As for the issue of rape, I would say that the very matter of will and consent is something of a Christian invention. You can find it discussed by St.Augustine, who comes to the conclusion that a woman who did not consent bore no sin. (Unfortunately, he does not seem to have got as far as an understanding of sexual automatisms, which mean that there can be pleasure even in rape, and that in turn can lead to a sense of guilt. Speaking as though sexual pleasure could be switched off merely by the will, he treats it as evidence of at least a certain amount of consent - thus doubling the sense of guilt carried by its victims. But this is at least a move in the right direction; if you read classical literature, you will not find a single description of a violent rape, let alone a discussion of its moral status, or its effect on its victims. It is as though it did not exist.)
