PARIS - Islamic militants under investigation for allegedly planning an attack on the Russian Embassy in Paris had other targets on their list, including the Eiffel Tower, police and judicial officials said Wednesday.Three men, all Algerians, were detained Jan. 11 in connection with an investigation into a network of Islamic radicals supporting Chechen rebels, the officials said on condition of anonymity.
More than 20 people have been jailed in a series of arrests since December 2002 as part of an investigation into the network. The investigation revealed an alleged plot against the Russian Embassy and a planned chemical attack.
On Wednesday, judicial officials confirmed the three arrests, which were first reported by the daily Le Parisien. The newspaper said attacks in Britain were also allegedly planned and that those arrested in France had links to a group of Islamic radicals in Spain.
According to judicial officials, the three men said among the targets was the veritable symbol of France, the Eiffel Tower. Also targeted were a clothing store in the central Paris district of Les Halles, which is a commuter link packed with people, Israeli interests and police stations, officials said.
Say it isn't so...I thought the Quran forebids
knocking down the Eiffel Tower and the Statue of Liberty that was partly designed by Gustove Eiffel himself.
Oh,and the Quran forebids using "Down syndrome" victims as suicide bombers as well.
If I'm not wrong, Jihadis planned to blow up the Eiffel Tower already in the 1990s, but were stopped. Does anybody have a link to this?

I concur with justamonof4; I remember this incident well. The terrorists hijacked the plane and wanted the pilots to fly it into the Eiffel tower. The pilot made an excuse they didn't have sufficient fuel and landed at Marseilles. The terrorists learned their lesson and took flying lessons for Sept. 11.

If they did eventually destroy the Eiffel Tower (and I wouldn't be surprised if that happened), what would France's reaction be? Would it wake them up to the danger & realities of Islam and make them come down hard on clerics and demand that Muslims in France either be loyal to France or get out? Or would they grovel and turn the blame on themselves, for "victimizing" the downtrodden, oppressed Muslims in France, and decide French people needed to learn more about Islam to understand their Muslim citizen's angst?

Yup. That's what the nihilist philosophies teach. First, they castrate their followers' ability to produce, then they tell them to destroy those who are able to produce.
The shining example of nihilism is Islam, but there are others, including those in charge of our own educational system.

The tower was part of the World's Fair held in Paris France,the sleazzy Government workers spent so much time trying to scam buyers for the scrap metal value that is was sold a few times to suckers fooled by conmen,after the eyesore gave fame to France, travel became accessible to the commoners and Parisians grew to tolerate the structure.
The tower of Pisa had two functions,as a look-out post it helped protect the village from the enemy and as a disguise for their water supply tower it protected them from poisoning the water supply to force a surrender.
It is interesting to note that this piece of news, about terrorists' intentions of blowing the Eiffel Tower passed almost unnoticed in the media here. I only saw a tiny frame about it in an inner page of "Le Parisien".
This coincides with the media's tendency (certainly dictated from above) of ignoring, minimizing, banalizing and distorting information. A simple example is the way they never mention anymore the origins of a peron who committed a crime. A few years back they still said on the news "a frenchmen by the name of Muhamad Abu Ali has tortured and murdered his elderly neighbour" for example. Today, they are not allowed to say the name (unless it's a real french name): of course, they are not racists, are they.
Up to a couple of years ago, whenever there was a TV reporting on prisons, you could see that the majority there are arabs. Now they only show the french prisonners.
up to recently, in programs about misery and people demanding and receiving social aide, housing and allocations, it was almost always arab huge families, often illegal, living in a small apartment, but obviously in better conditions then those they had in their home country, and presented on TV here as poor victims of a heartless selfish society. This theme was used so frequently that I guess the effect started turning around, especially as the extent and the depth of the french social system's bankrapt became more and more obvious. It was getting more and more obvious where and to whom this money goes.
And since then, suddenly, everytime the TV shows a the poor, it's always french people.
The weight of funding the arab babies born here in accelerated rates and their families, granting them free health and education services, and then places in prisons, is hidden away from the eyes of those brave french people who had worked all their lived and who were disowned of their retirement pension because the national pocket is empty.
When the media talk about the extremly violent groups of arabs breaking lose in town or in one of their neighbourhood evacuated from french people and where even policemen don't dare step in, they just say "les jeunes"- "the youth"- making it sound almost like a naughty and mischievous cute little teenage rebellion.
The french are in such a deep denial, partly guided and deliberate, that I'm afraid that even busting the Eiffel Tower will not make a difference. They'll probably attribute it to some fanatic little section having nothing to do with all the other muslims here, all so peaceful, loving, integrating, contributing with their "culture" to the variety and richness of the country...
