"Terror confessions on TV grip Baghdad," from the Times UK, with thanks to Jeffrey Imm and RB:
This is Terror in the Grip of Justice, the latest television hit in entertainment-starved Iraq where it is too dangerous to venture out at night and street life ends at last light. It is also the latest weapon in the Government's propaganda war against the insurgents, aimed at exposing them as the enemies of ordinary Iraqis and cautioning those tempted to join them....In one riveting episode this week, a gloating interrogator, barely able to disguise the venom in his voice, sought to cast a motley bunch of alleged insurgents as criminals unworthy of the name of Mujahidin (fighters in a holy war), a word with honourable connotations in the Arab world.
A suspect who confessed to receiving payments from Abu Musab al-Zarqawi's insurgent group in turn for killing policemen was asked how he spent the money. "On booze and clothes," he said.
"You call yourself a holy warrior but you drink?" spat the interrogator. "You discredit the name of jihad."
Then, like Jerry Springer delivering his "final thought", the interrogator addressed his own homily to those at home: "For those who say we are discrediting the jihad, I swear by God, if it was a real jihad, we would be leading it....
I feel so reassured! But others in Iraq have not felt so sanguine about this:
Insurgents have begun a propaganda counter-offensive, denouncing the tapes as fakes and threatening to impose "God's justice" on the station's employees - a threat apparently made real with the killing of Raeda Wazan, an anchor-woman, last month.
Yes, of course! Any propaganda counter-offensive worth its salt must include murder!
Morning all!

'Fenton and his colleagues had been tracking stories about Al-Qaeda and its allied networks for more than a decade, but they rarely reported what they knew on network news –"because much of the time, our bosses didn't consider such developments newsworthy." Fenton notes that in the three months leading up to 9/11 Al-Qaeda was never mentioned in any of the three evening news broadcasts. Fenton himself had fought in vain to interest CBS in an interview with Bin Laden.'

Anyone seen any data anywhere as to the percentage of "resistance fighters" who are native Iraqis vs Saudis, Palestinians and other usual suspect nationals?
You may recall that Zarqawi's biggest fear about the elections, etc., was that his band of thugs would encounter bad PR if they set about murdering the locals in efforts to impose a Wahhabist theocracy on them.
Imagine what the world would be like if the Western media launched a propaganda war against terrorism (similar to the wars they’ve launched against large corporations and Republicans).
Of course, Bill Gates and George Bush never issued a fatwa, and those bold hard-hitting media types are terrified that they’ll be the next Theo van Gogh or Raeda Wazan.
They’ll continue their usual pro-insurgent propaganda. But we can dream.
Waterdragon - Most of the Jihadists are Saudis
"The Global Research in International Affairs Center in Israel, a highly reputable and reliable think-tank, has published a paper titled "Arab volunteers killed in Iraq: an Analysis," available at e-prism.org. Authored by Dr. Reuven Paz, the paper analyzes the origins of 154 Arab jihadists killed in Iraq in the last six months, whose names have been posted on Islamist websites."
"The sample does not account for all jihadists in Iraq, but provides a useful and eye-opening profile of them. Saudi Arabia accounted for 94 jihadists, or 61 percent of the sample, followed by Syria with 16 (10 percent), Iraq itself with only 13 (8 percent), and Kuwait with 11 (7 percent.) The rest included small numbers from Jordan, Lebanon, Libya, Algeria, Morocco (of which one was a resident in Spain), Yemen, Tunisia, the Palestinian territories (only 1), Dubai, and Sudan. The Sudanese was living in Saudi Arabia before he went to die in Iraq."
I'm disappointed to say that the interrorgators quote as presented on this website is misleading:
The ENTIRE quote says "For those who say we are discrediting the jihad, I swear by God, if it was a real jihad, we would be leading it.
YOU SEE HOW THEY ARE KILLING INNOCENT PEOPLE AND RAPING UNDER THE COVER OF JIHAD? THE REAL JIHAD IS NOT RAPING AND KILLING, IT'S REBUILDING THIS COUNTRY ALL TOGETHER".
Changes one's perception a bit, no?

Thanks. I misread that report the first time I saw it and assumed the numbers only parsed the foreign jihadis and not the entire group.
A sampling of 150+ names is a rather small one, but even applying a generous margin of error, the low percentage of Iraqis among the "glorious dead" is extremely telling, isn't it?
If the "resistance" was really the popular national movement that the usual suspects would have us believe, you'd think they'd account for the majority and not the other way around.
No wonder they're so desparate to recruit jihaddists from wherever. Maybe Dr. Mack is right (the Honeypot Theory).
