Marriage fraud draws new focus after 9/11

Mr. Spencer:

Much as I cheer for what you and Anees Shorrosh are doing, I wish I could say that fraudulent marriage isn't just an Islamic problem. It is a huge, multicultural problem that arises because the USA likes family reunification. The easiest way to immigrate LEGALLY is to marry an American citizen or get adopted, prior to the age of sixteen, to one.

Yet, at the same time, American law essentially sees marriage as a piece of paper, and nothing more. Given that in Hawaii homosexual marriage is legal and that in New York a marriage between a man and a eunuch with silicone tits (aka sex-changer) would be registered, it seems a little preposterous to try to find out if marriages are bonafide. The immigration law of 1988 had a fraudulent marriages provision which says no unconditional green card unless you've been married to an American for two years or more--but in this age of "open marriages", what does it mean to be meaningfully married?

In addition to this, I understand that a Muslim man can initiate divorce simply by saying "I divorce you" three times to his wife.

Malafide marriage is a cottage industry in the Chinatowns and Little Saigons of America; it's been used by Israelis and Italians; it's exploited by Russians and Rwandans; we see it with Greeks and Germans. If it isn't used much by Canadians, it's probably because the Canadians blend in too well anyway.

Further, fraudulent marriage appeals to both the greedy and sexually adventurous among our own people, too.

All I can say is that I'm rooting for the prosecution in the cases you mention; and that I hope the USA again gets sensible about marriage being monogamous, heterosexual, and intended to last.

All over the Western world immigrants have been involved in every kind of fraud to obtain residency, or citizenship, but the problem is most acute with Muslims, both because of polygamy and because the laws of Infidel countries are viewed as simply irrelevant, not even worth discussing, to be observed only where one can be caught and if caught, punished. This fraud includes the kind of thing discussed above, where a woman "re-marries" someone else in order to get him residency papers. It includes the import, not of one wife, but of several wives, or in the Western world, of violating the law and continuing, as happens all over Europe, for Muslim men to take 2 or 3 or 4 wives.

Within the past week a friend, taking a taxi back from a major airport, was regaled by a talkative Somali taxidriver who discussed his 11 children, all in the United States, all getting all sorts of taxpayer-funded tutoring and medical care and housing allowances and so on, but mentioned that he had "only" one wife, while several friends of his, in the United States, managed to maintain four wives, listing only one of them as the "official" wife but stitching them around whenever something (medical care?) was needed for each in turn. He noted to my astonished informant that they all knew it was against American law and custom -- but so what? They managed to get away with it. What was most surprising was how readily the man revealed this, was even bragging about it. Clearly he had not heard that he was now living in a "police state," but was delighted with what he and his friends were doing. One wonders if the mayor of Lewiston, Maine, who a few years ago made the mistake of expressing doubts about the effect on the budget of the continued flow into Lewiston, an impoverished city, of Somalis hellbent on taking advantage of local largesse, had this kind of thing in mind -- but of course he received, at the time, only brickbats for stating the obvious.

Marriage is not seen in quite the same way -- especially when it is between a Muslim man and an Infidel woman. Saudi students have been informed (not that they needed it) that while studying in the United States they may find it convenient to make what, for them [a Muslim can divorce, in Islamic law, simply by uttering a phrase three times] is a temporary marriage, and which would not only take care of visa problems, but provide sexual relief. The girls in question can then be jettisoned (or not) simply upon return, by the student clutching his degree, to Saudi Arabia.

An article by Johannes Jansen, the noted Dutch scholar, "Islam and Muslim Civil Rights in the Netherlands" notes:

"...preference for a Dutch non-Muslim marrriage partner may also have economic grounds. This is, for instance, deomnstrable from the contents of a local Islamic religious mothnly, published in Arabic in Leiden. [Al-Shuruq, June 1991]In its discussion of the problems of 'marriage n exile,' machakil al-zawaj fi al-mahjar, the month explains that 'many oung Muslmi men marry Western girls because they wish to receive legal right of residence, raqhbat al-husul ala al-iqamah al-qanuniyaa. 'Having legal right of residnece,' with all the material benefits that it may produce,no doubt plays an important role in many minds. It cannot be denied that to many living in the West seems much more attractive materially than living in the Islamic world."

Politicians, particularly Labour politicians in England, seem unwilling to look too deeply into the nature of the marriages -- including the forced marriages of young Pakistani girls to older men in Pakistan, as well as the open secret of polygamy. They want votes. They are willing to ignore their own laws, to weaken their own country, to do whatever it takes to get Muslim votes. This is one more reason why the notion that Muslim "integration" into the West, which would only increase Muslim political power, is no solution at all. There is no solution. Islam and the non-Islamic world are immiscible. The former wishes to subjugate the latter. Not all Muslims share that desire, but a good many do, and there is no way to know when someone who does not share that view will change his mind. Betting the farm on fundamental good faith of "moderate" Muslims, under the circumstances -- 1350 years of circumstances -- would be ill-advised.

Thank you, Chairman Kyl, and members of the Subcommittee for holding this important series of hearings. Thank you also for inviting me to testify on the subject of terrorist penetration of the U.S. military and prison systems via corruption of the chaplain programs, and how it fits in with a larger foreign-sponsored campaign to build terrorist support networks inside this country.

I am testifying in my capacity as Annenberg Professor of International Communication at the Institute of World Politics, a graduate school of statecraft and national security in Washington. My expertise is in the political warfare of terrorist groups, not the theology of Islam.

Enemies of our free society are trying to exploit it for their own ends. These hearings ensure that policymakers and the public know and understand how our enemies’ operations work within our borders.

Chaplains are only one avenue terrorists that and their allies have used to penetrate and compromise the institutions of our civil society.

The recruitment and organization of ideological extremists in prison systems and armed forces is a centuries-old problem, as is the difficulty that civil societies have had in understanding and confronting the matter. While in tsarist prisons, Stalin and Dzerzhinsky organized murderers and other hardened criminals who would lead the Bolsheviks and their Cheka secret police. Hitler credited his time in prison as an opportunity to reflect and write Mein Kampf. Terrorist inmates and others communicate and organize among themselves and with the outside world via the rather open nature of our correctional system, and are known to do so in secret with collaborative lawyers by abusing the attorney-client relationship.

Chaplains are a vital part of military and correctional life, and until recently they have been above reproach. For several years, however, some of us have been alarmed that the small but important Muslim chaplain corps in the military has been harmed by those with an agenda that is more political than spiritual. This raises legitimate – indeed pressing – national security concerns.

….The Muslim Brotherhood is an international movement founded in 1928 that seeks the destruction of all state and geographic divisions, rejects the idea of the nation-state and all forms of secularization, and works toward creating a world pan-Islamic state with a government based on Muslim sharia law. Initially it was uncompromising in its rejection of secular society, but in recent years changed its strategy to renounce violence (“ostensibly,” in the word of the Egyptian newspaper Al Ahram), and to take over or dominate political parties, unions, and professional syndicates. It is technically banned in its home country of Egypt, but operates through cutouts. Al Ahram calls the Muslim Brotherhood a “political movement” because of its political goals.

The Muslim Brotherhood’s slogan is “God is our purpose, the Prophet our leader, the Qur’an our constitution. Jihad our way and dying for God’s cause our supreme objective.”

Springfield mosque faces investigation

SPRINGFIELD (AP) - Local Muslims are fighting to keep their mosque as the federal government investigates a link between the Islamic Center of Springfield and a benefactor accused of financing terrorism around the world.
The center is owned - on paper at least - by the Saudi-based Al-Haramain Islamic Foundation, which U.S. authorities accused of diverting donations to support a web of terrorist activities. The Saudi government dissolved the foundation in summer 2004.

NEW YORK — Can it be true? That Islamic schools in the United States teach hatred towards American Christians and Jews?
The Washington Post on Monday revealed that one such school outside Washington, D.C., uses textbooks teaching 11th graders that "the Day of Judgment can't come until Jesus Christ returns to Earth, breaks the cross and converts everyone to Islam, and until Muslims start attacking Jews."
Other accredited Islamic schools in America have world maps on classroom walls that exclude Israel. Some such schools promote class discussions that portray Usama bin Laden as "simply the victim of … prejudice" against all Muslims in America.

The evening at Dar Al Hijrah Islamic Center began cordially, with a dinner of lamb and rice for the head of the FBI's Washington field office and seven of his agents. But the mood grew tense after the guests were escorted to the prayer room of the Falls Church mosque for a town hall meeting.
"We need to know the definition of terrorism and terrorists," one mosque member told the agents. Why, asked another, had the FBI raided a Muslim organization that had helped him go on a pilgrimage to Mecca ?
A third member of the congregation said the FBI's informants were unreliable. He ridiculed its agents for warning his friend, a taxi driver who works 16 hours a day, that he was "moving around too much."
"Takbeer!" shouted the audience of about 80 people. "Takbeer!" The mosque official moderating the meeting quickly explained to the guests that the word "is a Muslim 'Hallelujah!' "
At some mosques, the angry questioning might have been considered imprudent. But not at Dar Al Hijrah, whose leaders have been outspoken in criticizing U.S. law enforcement actions against Muslims and U.S. policies in the Middle East

Hate at the Local Mosque

ORGANTOWN, W.Va. — Not long ago in my little mosque around the corner from a McDonald's, a student from the university here delivered a sermon. To love the Prophet Muhammad, he said, "is to hate those who hate him." He railed against man-made doctrines that replace Islamic law, and excoriated the "enemies of Islam" who deny strict adherence to Sunnah, or the ways of Muhammad. While he wasn't espousing violence, his words echoed the extremist vocabulary of Wahhabism, used by some followers to breed militant attitudes.
Like others who listened that day, I was stung by the sermon. It stands in chilling contrast to reforms taking place within Muslim communities nationwide. In fact, only months earlier at my mosque, my mother, sister-in-law, niece and I prayed in the main hall, an act of defiance that led to a reversal of the policy that women had to pray in a secluded balcony. Sadly, I have learned that the realization of an inclusive Islam is a fragile thing, even in this country. Americans need not look elsewhere to hear hate-filled rhetoric preached by fundamentalists. It resounds in our own back yards.

One afternoon, Mustafa Saied, a junior at the University of Tennessee , was summoned by a friend to a nearly empty campus cafeteria. The two settled themselves in a quiet corner, and Mr. Saied's friend invited him to join the Muslim Brotherhood.
"Everything I had learned pointed to the Muslim Brotherhood being an awesome thing, the elite movement," says Mr. Saied of his initiation in 1994. "I cannot tell you the feeling that I felt -- awesome power."
On that day in Knoxville , Mr. Saied entered a secretive community that was slowly building a roster of young men committed to spreading fundamentalist Islam in the U.S. A movement launched 75 years ago in Egypt , the Muslim Brotherhood has inspired terrorist acts, as well as social reform, throughout the Middle East and has chapters in some European nations. Until recently, law-enforcement officials saw little evidence that the organization was active in the U.S.
