KANO, Nigeria -- Accusations by Islamic preachers that vaccines are part of an American anti-Islamic plot are threatening efforts to combat a measles epidemic that has killed hundreds of Nigerian children, health workers say.Government officials play down the anti-vaccine sentiment, but all the measles deaths have been in Nigeria's north, where authorities had to suspend polio immunizations last year after hard-line clerics fanned similar fears of that vaccine.
Nigeria, whose 130 million people make it Africa's most populous nation, has recorded 20,859 measles cases so far this year. At least 589 victims have died, most of them children younger than 5 and all in the north, the Nigerian Red Cross and the U.N. World Health Organization say.
Southern Nigeria, which is mainly Christian, had only 253 measles cases, and no deaths.
Health services are much better in the south. But the anti-vaccination sentiment in the north, evident from interviews with parents, seems to be a factor.
This news is just another confirmation of the paranoia which Muhammad possessed and successfully passed on to his followers.
This behavior is indicative of a cult following along the same lines as Jonestown and Waco.

Gaddafi will not free Aids medics

Libyan leader Muammar Gaddafi has vowed not to pardon five Bulgarian nurses facing the death penalty for allegedly injecting children with the HIV virus.
"How can we free the murderers of children?" he asked, in a speech to an Arab League summit in Algiers.
"Everyone coming from the West asks me to release the Bulgarian nurses. That means when our children are dying, it's not important," he said.
The nurses and a Palestinian doctor insist they are innocent.
They have spent five years in detention.
According to the Benghazi court which issued the death sentence, the six deliberately infected 426 Libyan children as part of an experiment to find a cure for the deadly disease. Forty-seven of them later died.
Meanwhile, the trial of 10 Libyan policemen, who the nurses claim tortured them into confessing, has been postponed for a second time.
A Tripoli judge adjourned the case until 26 April due to absences among defence team members.
Compensation
Two of the nurses and the doctor, who had initially confessed, later said they had been beaten and given electric shocks by police officers until they admitted their guilt.
The controversial affair has sparked protests in Europe and the US, and is one of the major obstacles in Libya's bid to overcome its diplomatic isolation.
In December last year, Libya said it would consider freeing the nurses if Bulgaria was ready to compensate the victims.
But Bulgaria has since refused, on the grounds that a payout would be tantamount to admitting the medics' guilt.
EU external affairs commissioner Benita Ferrero-Waldner has said that a conclusion to the HIV affair "would also be very good for the Libyans".
Maybe vaccines work; maybe they don't. But, if they do, the ignorant refusal by a small group of diseased people to accept vaccines has serious implications for the entire world.
It would be a good thing to eradicate measles before it works its way back around to us in an even more corrupted permutation. It would be an incredibly good thing to eradicate Smallpox .. almost fully gone from the world .. Ebola-like virus death toll rises
The Marburg disease causes fever, vomiting and severe bleeding
The toll from the Ebola-like Marburg virus in Angola has risen to 122, after a baby died in the northern town of Uige, a government spokesman said.
The virus, which first broke out in Uige province last October, has now spread to the capital, Luanda.
A health minister described the situation as "critical".
Angola has sought to allay fears over the spread of the virus, saying there was no need for people to leave the country or cancel plans to visit.
The South African-based Netcare Travel Clinic said travellers should stay away from Angola for at least a week.
However, Deputy Health Minister Jose van Dumen told the BBC that the situation had improved with the arrival of international medical aid.

The Marburg virus causes fever, vomiting and bleeding.
Health ministry spokesman Carlos Alberto told the AFP news agency the baby's 19-year-old mother died on Sunday morning.
"This is extremely serious - strong preventative measures are needed to contain this outbreak of Marburg disease, " he said earlier.
The number of people hospitalised with the virus has also risen by five to 132, including a Portuguese citizen and a 12-year-old girl in Luanda.
The outbreak is now approaching the most serious recorded, when 123 people died in the Democratic Republic of Congo between 1998 and 2000.
UN and aid agency officials are working with the Angolan government to contain the virus.
A pregnant woman was reportedly its first victim in the country's northern Cabinda province on Saturday, having travelled there from Uige.
The virus was first identified in 1967 among laboratory workers in Europe who had been working with monkeys.
According to the World Heath Organization (WHO), three-quarters of the virus' victims have been children.
The European Union announced last week that it would give $650,000 (£348,000) to fight the disease.
Its early stages are marked by diarrhoea, stomach pains, nausea and vomiting. As it develops, patients can experience chest pains, severe internal bleeding and eventually, death.

Hmmm. Back in the 18th century, Jonathan Edwards, shortly after accepting the presidency of the College of New Jersey, took a vaccination (in its primitive stage back then) and died from the complications--a martyr to science as well as a great man of God.
Maybe they need to print matchbooks and similar items with information in Hausa, Fulani, and such languages on what vaccinations are really for and how they really work, then drop them all over northern Nigeria. Maybe a few Muslim families, after seeing their children saved from measles, will say "Well, isn't our mullah a big dope!"

This is terribly sad. Most of the deaths were little kids and babies. And how awful for their parents to watch their kids' suffer and die. It's such a shame that this measles doesn't infect those clerics, and kill them instead. That evil vermin is the only thing that deserves to die, the ones ordering the death sentences for the babies.
Islam flourishes on such ignorance, paranoia and superstition. It's amazing how in this day and age you can have people believing such lies spewing from those clerics' filthy mouths. Perhaps the parents of suffering children don't actually believe these clerics but have no choice but to follow their sick orders. Afterall, we haven't seen Islam promoting freedom of choice. Such a shame that Islam has infected Africa. Poor Africa, suffering from the two worst scourges on the planet today: AIDS and Islam. I'm not sure which is worse.
All of Western medicine, when practiced on Muslims, is a plot. Western medicine should be avoided -- not merely like the plague, but because it causes the plague. Those free clinics full of Arab patients, that the Israelis, those putative mass-murderers, have been offering, those free obstetrical and other services that for decades have lowered rates of infant mortality among local Arabs and even Arabs outside Israel (Edward Said was not the first, nor the last, Arab whose pregnant mother deliberately chose a Jewish-run hospital to have her baby in, coming all the way from Cairo to do so). It would be better if Arab doctors, in Arab hospitals, offered all the medical care, and that Arabs no longer sought attention either from non-Muslim doctors in the Middle East, or in the Western world.
Why should any Muslim even have to worry, or endure the stress, of thinking that a non-Muslim doctor might be up to no good? Far better to end all such nightmarish doubts, by removing any cause for alarm. As for Western vaccines, Western CAT-scans, Western ways of performing surgery, Western magnetic resonance, Western drugs -- all tinged or touched with danger. All wisdom, including medical wisdom, is contained in the Qur'an. Better stick with that.
