MOSCOW -- A Chechen rebel leader accused of orchestrating deadly terrorist attacks against Russians was killed in a raid by security forces in northern Chechnya, military officials said yesterday, providing a boost to President Vladimir Putin in his campaign against the separatists.Aslan Maskhadov, 53, was killed during a "special operation" conducted in Tolstoy-Yurt, a village near the capital, Grozny, in the northern part of the war-torn republic, Federal Security Service chief Nikolai Patrushev told Mr. Putin in a televised meeting....

The death of Mr. Maskhadov raises the spectre of retaliatory attacks by Chechen militants, blamed for killing 430 people in bombings and other attacks against Russians last year....
It also silences what some considered to be a voice of moderation. Mr. Maskhadov had recently called for face-to-face talks with Mr. Putin. In February, he sought a weeklong ceasefire before the 61st anniversary of the Stalin-ordered deportation of Chechens to Siberia and Central Asia.
Russian officials had dismissed the ceasefire call as insincere and said violence by rebel forces continued in the tiny republic on Russia's southern flank. They have insisted that Mr. Maskhadov played a role in planning the Beslan school massacre last year and the 202 seizure of 800 hostages at a Moscow theatre.

Maskhadov's body won't be handed over to relatives - prosecutors
GROZNY. March 9 (Interfax) - The body of Chechen separatist leader Aslan Maskhadov, who was killed on Tuesday, will not be handed over to his relatives, nor will they be notified about the place and date of his burial, Russian Deputy Prosecutor General Nikolai Shepel told Interfax by phone on Wednesday.
"The law does not provide for handing over the bodies of terrorists to their relatives," Shepel said.
He said that before Maskhadov's body is buried, investigators must conduct all of the necessary identification procedures, which will take at least two weeks.

The story itself stresses the negative consequences of killing Maskhadov. But, the unbalanced nature of the story and neglect to context were not the greatest sins. The picture has now been changed, but for one full day the beaten shoulders and head of Maskhadov's corpse graced BBC Front Page. Of all the images in the world the BBC chose to project on their FRONT PAGE for an entire day the brutalized corpse of Maskhadov.
Why? Similar presentations of blood and gore are used for propaganda purposes in Arab and Muslim media and Web pages, as any browser of these sites knows. The images of brutality incite the audience with outrage, hatred, these are the hoped for responses. Rather than report and describe a story, one slants the story toward your point of view and then, wham, grotesque images to incite the audience and 'prove' your point about the evil, the demons, the butts of the story. This is what the BBC was obviously up to here.
I am a BBC critic and watcher, as folks here know, and I could not believe my eyes. The photo display was obviously outside the boundaries of standards of journalistic decency, number one, but the clear intent to incite outrage, revulsion and hatred against the Russians and sympathy for the Jihadists and murderers of Beslan; this looks to me to be nothing more than the product of a BBC Jihad department. Yes, there must be folks in this institution who willfully attempt to find ways to support the Jihad around the globe; there is evidence of that in my opinion.
The photo is now changed, and there are other stories on this killing, but the evidence of sinister forces within the BBC remain.

Chechnya has really calmed down in the past few months.
The russian paras , elite soldiers who were used in offensive operations against the islamist terrorists , have been withdrawn as the local forces are more than a match for the terrorists.
They stopped a Beslen type massacre a couple of months ago in Dagestan.
This area has been a great success for putin. Not that the dhimmified western press would ever tell you.
