Spy Agencies Fear Some Applicants Are Terrorists

From the LA Times, with thanks to BHall:

WASHINGTON — U.S. counterintelligence officials are increasingly concerned that Al Qaeda sympathizers or operatives may have tried to get jobs at the CIA and other U.S. agencies in an effort to spy on American counterterrorist efforts.

So far, about 40 Americans who sought positions at U.S. intelligence agencies have been red-flagged and turned away for possible ties to terrorist groups, the officials said. Several such applicants have been detected at the CIA.

"We think terrorist organizations have tried to insinuate people into our hiring pools," said Barry Royden, a 39-year CIA veteran who is a counterintelligence instructor at the agency.

Also, three senior counterintelligence officials said they feared terrorist groups may be trying to place an "insider" in America's fast-growing counterterrorist planning and operational networks as part of a long-term strategy to compromise U.S. intelligence efforts.

The officials added that it was still unclear if anyone had been assigned to infiltrate U.S. intelligence to commit espionage for a terrorist group. No one has been arrested, and no one has been linked to any new "sleeper cell" of suspected terrorists in America.

Well, Holy Shiite... you "must be kidding"

Pardon the pun.

That's one way to sucker them in, get their DNA, pictures, etc. Too bad the CIA didn't think of rounding 'em up that way in the first place .. old Mossad trick .. or maybe they did. Yahoooo! Another conspiracy theory in the making.

Why go to such effort, they already have George W in their back pocket, Bush family is friends and business partners with the Saudis', the chief financiers of Muslim terrorists, mosques and subversive Islamic litearature.

Why Prince Bandar is called Bandar Bush by the family, has slept 14 times in the Lincoln Bedroom, is the only foreign official that has a direct line to Dubya, and let's not forget that Dubya helped the bin Laden Saudis get out of this country in the three days after 9-11.

Sad ;( but true.
'

On topic Infiltration: How Muslim Spies and Subversives have penetrated Washington Book is on my next to buy list, I wonder if it goes into detail as regards the Bush Saudi conspiracy aka House of Bush HOuse of Saud: Secret relationship between the worlds two most powerful dynasties

Giour~ please do spend your money as you see fit- the rest of us will pursue books on the topic of Jihad, by creditable people like Mr. Spencer.

Mr. Scheuer, he of pseudo-“Anonymous” fame, who was supposedly “in charge” of the Bin Laden desk, was clearly not up to the task. Instead of low cunning, he offered a kind of Boy Scoutish, or rather Cub Scoutish, simplemindedness, and clearly understood nothing about the theory and practice of Islam. His every remark showed this. Yet apparently he was kept on for many years. The C.I.A. needs to have a cadre created, or expanded, of people who will be given the necessary leisure to read widely in the history of Islam – and particularly to learn something about its teachings, and about Jihad-conquest, and about the very similar treatment, through time and space, of non-Muslims under Muslim rule. They then need to be trained in the fissures, or disgruntlements, within Islam itself, and learn as well of the points of obvious weakness that can be emphasized, both to non-Muslims all over the world, who are grossly underinformed about the nature of Islam and to those who may have been born into Islam without really having studied its history, or having been sheltered from its real nature by a combination of fear and filial piety, and who might, if they were properly shaken by events (as so many Iranians, both in exile and in Iran, have been, not by anything non-Muslims have done, but by what has been done by Muslims, and in the name of Muslim, during the quarter-century of the Islamic Republic of Iran).

One hopes that the C.I.A. is not pulling any punches about Islam. If it echoes the nonsense from the government, about the “extremists” in Islam, and continues to offer a sanitized version of Islam – instead of the Ibn Warraq or Ali Sina version, that which many articulate ex-Muslims, the equivalent of Soviet defectors, could provide – then there is not much to expect from those on whom we rely for our own security, and from whom we have a right to expect at least as hard-eyed a view as was taken by the secret services of America and England with the Nazis and then with the Communists. All pieties, all vagueness, all denial of reality, really has no place. Whatever role it may have in public diplomacy (and it has been a grave error to define the current, and continuing, and endless but manageable conflict as a “war on terrorism” instead of as a “war against the Jihad.” The latter formulation would be true, and still maintain the veiled notion that we are fighting not Islam but “only” the Jihad. And even that formulation, while much saner and more realistic, needs to be amplified: the Jihad has many instruments, and the three D’s – Da’wa, demography, and dhimmitude – are more potent, in the end, than intermittent terrorism.

Does the C.I.A. possess a sufficient number of agents who understand this? Is it making use of those who have an intimate knowledge both of Islam, and of all the techniques of those who form the small army of apologists of Islam? What use is made of Maronite, Copt, or Jewish native speakers of Arabic? What use is made of other secret services with longer experience in the relevant areas, including the French and Russian and British and Israeli intelligence services?

Where is the John Roy Carlson (author of “Under Cover”) who will infiltrate various Muslim groups, and write a story that will electrify a mass audience – or are the mass audiences that existed once so jaded, or so unused to reading, or so unwilling to recognize that a world war quite unlike any that has ever before occurred, so that it is difficult to recognize, is not only now underway, but has – largely undetected – been underway for a long time, but only since 1973 have a concatenation of events, These events include, but are not limited to: $8-$10 trillion in oil revenues to Muslim OPEC states; the large-scale unopposed movement of millions of Muslims into Infidel countries; the redefinition of the Arab siege of Israel as a “struggle between two tiny peoples, etc.” or, still worse, a “struggle” by the “Palestinian people” against “occupation” (not one of the words or phrases can withstand critical scrutiny, but repetition has pushed them into our hapless consciousnesses), and the clever use of “islamochristian” Arabs as front men (Naim Ateek, Hilarion Cappucci, Hanan Ashrawi), all helping to obscure the real nature of the “Palestinian” and Arab and Muslim hatred of Israel, not as an “occupier” but rather, as an Infidel sovereign state and, what is more, one on land that was once clearly part of dar al-Islam (though that should not console those of us who live on land that never was, for the entire world ultimately must belong to Allah and to his People; no other result is possible); the widespread use of Arab oil money to buy influence among politicians, diplomats, C.I.A. agents, journalists, public relations experts, and others, all of whom have helped conceal, with great success, from the peoples of Europe and America, the tenets, and the history, of Islam, and to keep tied up in knots even the most modest of efforts to limit, for example, the use of Saudi money to pay for mosques and madrasas all over the Western world, and to promote the spread not only of Islam, but of that version which is even more virulent than the others (but this should not be interpreted, as some have, to suggest that “only” Wahhabi Islam is the problem, because we have only to look at the Shi’a in southern Lebanon or Iran to see otherwise).

One hopes that the C.I.A. itself has not been infiltrated. It is clear, from the reading list of General Vines, for example, that whoever supplied it (John Esposito? Peter Bechtold of the Foreign Policy Institute? Who, exactly? This needs to be investigated), was not about to let General Vines or those American army officers to whom he would in turn recommend that list, --a list of dangerously, and even willfully misleading books on Islam—learn the kind of things that he would have learned had he read Ibn Warraq’s “Why I Am Not a Muslim,” or consulted the website of Ali Sina (www.faithfreedom.org), or read Bat Ye’or’s “Islam and Dhimmitude” and “The Decline of Eastern Christianity Under Islam.”

The most important task is that of pedagogy. The C.I.A. has to have people who will be able to fully inform themselves, and not to worry constantly about a lawsuit from CAIR or similar groups. Certain home truths have to be understood and communicated. Those entrusted with the task of protecting and instructing us cannot allow themselves to be inhibited, in the slightest, by those whose loyalties are with Islam, and with the Jihad to spread the power and dominance of Islam, however it is pursued.

Bush works for America, period.

Whether you agree or disagree with his direction, i really take umbrage at the suggestion that he works for the Saudis, or the Israelis, or the oil companies or...etc.

To suggest that the guy is anything but a patriot of the first order is ugly, stupid and wrong.

There is lots about his policies, mainly domestic, that i disagree with strongly, so i'm not an obvious supporter at all.

You are so right Hugh.
I doubt that the hard eyed realism we need in our governments, foreign services and military re islam is yet in place.
The longer these instruments of our society remain in some dreamland of wishful thinking, the more dangerous the world becomes, and the tougher the ultimate battles will be. All not unlike our slow acceptance of the danger of the nazis, and that failure to appreciate the danger early cost tens of millions of lives.

What this article tells me is that Islam and its followers should not be in America. Islam clearly should never have been allowed into America in the first place. As I have stated over and over here, Islam constitutes conspiracy to commit murder and conspiracy to commit genocide; permitting followers of Islam into the U.S. is discriminatory in that many American statutes deny Americans the right to and capacity to conduct many activities that Muslims do (imagine if YOU conspired to slaughter non-members of YOUR religious denomination!).

Inasmuch as Americans and their government are the targets of islam's jihads and always have been, why would Americans cling to the illusion that Muslims can be safely be included in the fabric of American life? My apologies to the philosopher types who cling to the notion (or delusion) that Islam can be reformed to exclude its inherent ideological violence.

With regards to our government agencies and their problem in attracting Arab-speaking persons who are NOT terrorists maybe it's about time that they investigated the possibility of enlisting Jewish people (many of whom do speak Arab and are rarely if ever terrorists). Who will clue them in? Who is going to make them listen? Can they?

Anyone who applies to the CIA for an analyst track job should be suspect. Janitors in NYC make more money. In fact, the CIA may be a case of getting what you paid for.

Giaour-

Focus on not just your conspiracy theory, but all of them. Every administration has them. Every family has them. I am sure that I could find people that know you that may say the "Giaour has a alterior motive or did when he did this or that".

Before you get lost in my rambling, understand that the problem has been going on longer than one administration of either party. Longer then you have been alive, and longer than America has been a country.

Don't pick just any one political party or administration....pick the truth. Are'nt you interested to know when this started, and why? Why would you settle on a the possible error of one person, and then feel comfortable? Look at the flip side. Do you actually believe Osama was the creation of this movement? Again it has been around since before Columbus discovered America.

The problem is the hearts of man.

When men want to do evil they will do it. Today it is Islam (not terrorism). We have had communism, nazism etc, etc. The fight today is for the hearts of men. Not finger pointing....no matter what political party.

You make a point that I find is not politically correct. I believe that a person of authority and/or a politician should have their personal life scrutinized in order to stand in that position of authority. Because what a person is in their heart is what they will represent in public. Any time a public person has morality issues pointed out, the media says stay out of their personal life. But your conspiracy theory says that we should examine a persons personal life and personal ties. May I ask you, are you consitantly fair with this advance or are you reserved for people or issues that you like to hear?

Have you asked yourself did Michael Moore that pointed out alot of these conspiracy issues have a agenda? Did he make a lot of issues to appear to be fact? Did'nt he point out these issues as a way to "reveal the truth"? Is he interested in the truth?

Then ask yourself a bigger question. Why has not Michael Moore started a movie about the UN? The oil-for-food scandal. If it is true that the UN and possibly the Security Council had their votes bought by scandalious money, then would'nt that actually been what caused the Iraqi war, not George W? Think about this. George W. said if everyone stood unified against Saddam we would not have to go to war, but we would put it on the table. So by not voting with us the Security Council forced George W's hand. Now if the Security Council had sold their vote, they in turn stood unified with Saddam and thus caused a war. The conspiracy in the making would be a Michael Moore movie.

Search for the truth in the bigger picture, not in issues.

It is time to stop shooting the messenger.
Even a reviled messenger such as Michael Moore occasionanlly makes sense.
Giaour brings out what is one of the Fundamental Questions in the war against wahabist infiltration in the US and western worlds.
WHy Is a foreigs state, namely SAUDI ARABIA, permited to spread its tentacles of poison without restraint , into the educational, fincial and media estblishments of AMERICA?
Why is it allowed without challenge to nurture the vilest Islamofascist clerics to spread wahabism into the thousands of mosques it has established with little opposition on US soil.
Why are its organisations such as Cair MSa, AAI , who hide under the false mantle of civil libertarianism allowed to stiffle the exercise of free speech amongst muslim and non muslims alike and even worse to stifle the reporting of Muslim outrages.
Is it not a simple truth that the main purpose of Saudi arabia (apart from maintaining its corrupt status quo) is to use its huge wealth to spread wahhabism amongst American muslims and to destroy and replace American democracy?
Is that so hard to recognise?

Until America deals with Saudi , ther will be no answer to the problem

WHy Is a foreigs state, namely SAUDI ARABIA, permited to spread its tentacles of poison without restraint , into the educational, fincial and media estblishments of AMERICA?

Constitution of the United States of America, Amendment 1.

Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof; or abridging the freedom of speech, or of the press, or the right of the people peaceably to assemble, and to petition the Government for a redress of grievances.

ratified effective December 15, 1791

The problem with Mohammadanism has to be solved while staying within the limits of the Constitution.

Giaour,
my contention would be that Bush and Co., naively, think that they have some friends in Saudi Arabia and Egypt.
This is a dangerous mistake, similar to some made by Israel, France etc., all thinking in western terms.

If the Turks and the Kurds are talking alliance, which one web site is suggesting, some interesting things could happen:
Kurdistan, with chunks of Iraq, Syria and
Iran, backed by Turkey and U.S.
Turkey takes a big chunk of Syria as well.

This would diminish both Iran and the arabs, two worthwhile results, and weaken hizbollah in Lebanon, palestine, Syria.
All America's enemies would lose big time, and Turkey, with Kurdistan as a firm ally, would be a real force in the area, and a relatively pro American one, especially after U.S. help in this reordering of things.

I would love to see this happen.

'Bush works for America, period'-: perhaps.

But the Saudi's pay better. Just in case you havn't noticed, so far just about every American president starting from Peanut-Carter (my favorite asshole) has received tens of millions of dollars to build his own mausoleum, library or monument!

You think Bush junior is going to miss out?

ummagumma,

"Hire only apostates." And how do we tell the real ones from those who are saying they are?

The hiring of CIA personnel is a deeply flawed process, to say the least. Everyone who tries to get in is suspect, and I have read but can't confirm that up to 2/3 fail the polygraph. So who gets hired? Youngsters with Bachelors' degrees who led lives so pale that they have nothing to conceal from a poly. Small wonder that, as Robert Baer complains, the service is notably well-manned in Mormons. Just as impressionable and uneducated young reporters quickly learn to parrot their editors in order to stay employed and give an impression that they know something, so do these young analysts and operatives. This, perhaps more than anything else, is why CIA products are a joke in the Intel community, and why a significant chunk of the CIA's former operations responsibilities is being shifted to Special Ops.

Anyone whose CV says "It is reliably reported that I have a BA in International Relations" should be considered highly suspect.

I am afraid if you circumvent the Constitution by outlawing Islam, once the anti-Christian left gains power again, then the Christians would be outlawed next, along with guns. It just becomes a big long slippery slope after that.

Israel has survived for 57 years, despite, 57 years of terrorist attacks and numerous wars. To suggest that our chance of survival is slim, is a bit of an overkill.

Yes Bar, your right.

But Israel does not have the American Constitution and every Jew knows what's in store for them if they don't keep a lid on the situation at all times.

(sometimes I'm not too sure about that, though. Seems that Israel is it's own worst enemy.)

However: With regards to the global Jihad I am convinced that we can use existing laws to outlaw most of their attempts to conquer our society(s). But we have yet to find a lawyer (or a group of high profile lawyers of Dershowitzes caliber) and the $$$$$'s of curse that would allow us to take the hatemongers on.
