The father of accused Ottawa terrorist Mohammad Momin Khawaja has published a scathing online rebuke of Canadian security agencies, accusing them of "a rampage" of arrest and torture. In a lengthy tract published on several Internet sites, Mahboob Khawaja, an academic whose son is the first and only person to be charged under the Anti-Terrorism Act, claims Canada is "terrorizing" its citizens…Mohammad Momin Khawaja, an Ottawa software developer, was arrested a year ago on allegations he was part of a plot to detonate an ammonium nitrate bomb in the U.K.. Several other arrests followed in Britain. British police claimed Mr. Khawaja met with co-conspirators in England between Oct. 1, 2003, and March 31, 2004, to ''cause by an explosive substance an explosion of a nature likely to endanger life or cause serious injury to property.'' British police seized a tonne of explosives during the raids. The father was teaching in Saudi Arabia at the time of the arrests and was briefly detained by Saudi authorities. In his essay, he says the war on terror is "a racist doctrine and unilateral plan of action aimed exclusively at terrorizing the Muslim people and nobody else."

When that idiot who had been arrested while photographing tall buildings in Toronto made his little protest with a hundred or more others- and took some more photos, after having been released- it got all kinds of coverage.

Who really knows? Ali Sina thinks it is more than 90%. But even if "militant Islam" is limited to those who would themselves plant bombs, what about those who would not do it, but applaud it? Or what about those who would not do it, nor appalud it (a very small number) but who continue to mislead Infidels as to the nature of Islam, out of un-sinisiter motives (ignorance, embarrassment, filial piety, the belief that "their" Islam growing up, say, in Tenafly, New Jersey, or Wayland, Massachusetts is the "real" Islam). Any Muslim who misleads about the nature of Islamic tenets, or who, by his mere presence, swells the political and economic power of Muslims in the non-Muslim lands, contributes to the Jihad.
Who, in fact, would be left out? Only the defectors, or those who are the secret defectors who, without mentioning Islam, do what they can to enlighten and warn, but don't dare touch the subject directly.

Given the number of known Muslim jihaddists from Canada (notably the four Khadr brothers and their dear departed dad, the Vancouverite who turned up dead in Chechnya while supposedly abroad to attend a friend's wedding in Dajikstan and the Montreal-based would-be Millenium bomber, but I know there are others), this is hardly a rampage directed at Muslims.

Why are the "real terrorists"? What about those that insist on including the teaching of religion in public schools, the inclusion of religion in commerce, religion in every aspect of life, forcing their religion on others through their dress, conversation, and so on, and look upon others that don't practice they do or dress as they do, or speak as they do with disdain. Of course Muslims aren't the only ones that do this, but Muslims seem to be in your face with religion, treating non-Muslims with disdain. They are the real terrorists.
I suppose we should all be glad that the KKK and the Nazis don't seek to be recognized as religions. How many new law protected rights in most civilized nations would they then have to pursue their brand of evil?

The word "antisemitism" is a description of a pathological condition; it was not invented by the victims of that pathological condition, and the phrase "Jews also have cried racism" disturbs. Given the history of the Western world, and much of the Muslim East, a phrase such as "Jews...have cried racism" which sounds as if it were all overblown ("the boy who cried wolf") or exaggerated or baseless, should offend everyone, whatever their background or beliefs or state of unbelief. Words matter.

The distinguishing feature of the Spanish Inquisition, other than its ferocity (though nowadays we all think not of the historian Henry Lea, but of Eric Idle or perhaps Terry Jones suddenly appearing saying "No one expects the Spanish Inquisition"), was the idea of "la limpieza" -- racial purity. It is not true that by conversion one could save oneself; the point was that, during that Spanish Inquisition, anti-Judaism transmogrified into something else -- hostlility not to a religion, but what was thought of as a "race." One point not treated by Netanyahu nor by others cries out for treatment. Why did this happen? What was it about Spain that led to such deep suspicion that "Marranos" (converted Jews) were necessarily hiding their real beliefs, and what lead those in the Inquisition to begin to think of such people as guilty not so much for their "beliefs" (the sincerity of any conversion not really susceptible of proof), so that it made things easier to begin to think of them as permanently guilty -- i.e., members of a guilty "race" which, unlike religion, was immutable and, accepting the idea that Jews were sinister and threats to Christians, were punishable whatever their proclaimed beliefs.

Even if one allows for some exaggeration in the Leyenda Negra about the villainies of the conquistadores in Spanish America, was there not a peculiar ferocity in how the Spanish conquered, and could that not reflect the kind of aggression that they had had to muster, or even to learn to emulate from their enemies, during the Reconquista? A not-quite mirror-imaging of ferocity in dealing with the Muslim enemy, and of fears that that Muslim enemy, capable of great and almost supernatural dissimulation, might have contributed to the transferral of that learned ferocity and those once-justified fears, of the Christians of Spain, to an easier and more vulnerable target -- the Jews, or the "converted" Jews, who needed to be found out from among the population of Christians, or New Christians. Surely the effect of the Reconquista on the Spanish Inquisition is worth some investigation.
At the moment the latest fashion in turning aside critical scrutiny of Islam is to pretend that it is simply a version of antisemitism. Take Karen Armstrong in "The Guardian" for April 6, where she attempts to defend Muslims from Europeans with their "Islamophobia" by equating the incipient hostility to them (despite a gigantic effort to dampen down such hostility), which is based on a rational assessment of how Muslims are now behaving in Europe, and how they have made life more unpleasant, expensive, and dangerous for Infidels. Though Europeans may not have studied the history of Islamic conquest, or doctrine, they cannot deny the evidence of their senses.
Antisemitism, on the other hand, is a pathological condition that does not require the proximity, or existence, of Jews to develop or fester in the brain). Another example is the article in the latest Chronicle of Higher Education by Sandor Gilman, who may know something about the history of European Jewry, but knows nothing about Qur'an, Hadith, and Sira, and nothing about the 1350-year history of Jihad-conquest and subjugation of non-Muslims. One hopes that before continuing in this vein Gilman will read Bat Ye'or, as well as the forthcoming "The Legacy of Jihad," and a lot more. As for Armstrong, she is hopeless.
