Wait a minute. He's committed to the "tolerant teachings and values of Islam," as well as to "Islamic Shariaa"? So I guess that tolerance includes the laws of the dhimma, the oppression of women, etc.

Form a committeee. Fill a room with "reasonable people" and ask them to define the term "tolerance", and you will learn that "Tolerance" is a complex and loaded term. Arguments will ensue, and soon you will have committee members calling each other bigots and intolerant unless there is strong leadership that mandates the definition.
Islam is such a system. They know what mandated definition of "tolerance" which disdains others and deems them impure and unacceptable.

I spent a week visiting some friends in Istanbul in January and I was fascinated by 'secular moderate, liberal' turkeys attitude to tolerance. It is not the intolerance that concerns me but the fact that they do not see it as such.
As an example, istanbuls archeology museum covers the islamic siege and conquest of constantinople. On a board, a series of bullet points are listed, including, the taking over of the majority of Christian churches and the conversion of them into mosques, including St Sophia, and then almost immediately after proudly declaring the muslims allowing the non muslims to freely practice their religions.
It struck me then that I was labouring under the impression that islam is intolerant and lies about it. It is in fact much more disquieting. Their is an amazing level of double think (The ability to hold two contradictory beliefs at the same time) in Islam. Yes it is intolerant by it's nature, but it's followers actually do believe it is tolerant.
A kinder, gentler medieval fascism.

Take away all the churches, but allow freedom of religion.
Allow "debate", but learn that not one single book on Islam has ever been written by Coptic Christians in Egypt.
Give full "rights" to religious minorities, but don't allow overt displays of that religion, nor permit them to repair their holy buildings nor construct new ones.
Be tolerant - but intolerant at the same time.

In a word tolerance = dhimmitude, not co existence, equality.

Words are tools by which to control humans.
Words are symbols.
They have different meanings to different peoples.

When we hear Bush say he wants to bring democracy to the world, we think he means our kind of democracy, but democracy means simply majority rule. Iran is a democracy, Saudi Arabia is a democracy (the majority - 100% in fact is Muslim, and Wahhabis are the majority Muslims).
