Official: Zarqawi Eludes Capture; Computer Discovered

Let's hope the computer contains valuable information. From ABC News, with thanks to Kemaste:

Apr. 25, 2005 - Jordanian rebel Abu Musab al-Zarqawi -- Iraq's most wanted fugitive -- recently eluded capture by American troops, but left behind a treasure trove of information, a senior military official told ABC News.

On Feb. 20, the alleged terror mastermind was heading to a secret meeting in Ramadi, just west of Fallujah, where he used to base his operations, the official said.

Task Force 626 -- the covert American military unit charged with finding Zarqawi -- had troops in place to grab the fugitive, and mobile vehicle checkpoints had been established around the city's perimeter. Another U.S. official said predator drones were also in flight, tracking movements in and around the city.

A source who had been inside the Zarqawi network alerted the task force to the meeting. Officials deem the source "extremely credible."...

What the task force did find in the vehicle confirmed suspicions that Zarqawi had just escaped. The official said Zarqawi's computer and 80,000 euros (about $104,000 U.S.) were discovered in the truck.

Finding the computer, said the official, "was a seminal event." It had "a very big hard drive," the official said, and recent pictures of Zarqawi. The official said Zarqawi's driver and a bodyguard were taken into custody.

The senior military official said that they have since learned Zarqawi jumped out of the vehicle when it passed beneath an overpass, presumably to avoid detection from the air, and hid there before running to a safe house in Ramadi.

Jordanian 'rebel'-, Jordanian what? Who wrote that?

I saw Bush kissing the Saudi's today.

Any Baruch Goldsteins out there?

First off it looks like the US and coalition troops are getting closer to catching his dumb ass....as he gets more and more brazen in his attacks he makes it more likely that he will either be captured or killed, its the odds....second, i hate to get off topic, but i ask anyone who reads the post, to check out a most awfull, disgusting and distressing site i have ever seen as far as im concerned.... www.forsakethetroops.info .....it must be run by liberals who support the terrorists....i read the stuff that was on the page and i was so disgusted and angry that i had to get up from my pc and work off my anger on my excercise machine....and these people are "Americans"???....i think they should be found and either deported to one of these "peace loving and tolerating" Mulsim countries that they seem to support, or they should be thrown in a pit filled with starving wolves.....better yet, as they seem to think that the US troops are such horrible beings, maybe they should be given over the US Marines, or maybe the Special Forces troops and taught a little lesson.....frickin liberals....How i loathe them all.....nuff said

It is more likely that the site is operated by Islamists who have created a cyber-Tokyo Rose to demoralize the troops and people like you and me. The gormless liberals who have bought the Michael Moore line that the opposition to the occupation is representative of the Iraqi people liberals opposed the war because they thought doing so was in support of "peace", they do not relish the death of American troops. They want them brought home ASAP. (There are some liberal/left types, myself included, who took the minority view that intervention was long overdue and warranted.)

Try to take heart in some recent news including the fact that the cretins who shot down the SkyLink helicopter the other day were turned in by Sunni citizens and that a signficant segment of the Sunnis are also doing a 180 degree on participating in elections and government.

As for Zarqawi and Co., perhaps things aren't going all that well as some of the recently captured "insurgents" were Shias who were helping him out for the money and promise of being made "emirs". They may be prepared to support each other under certain conditions (as did Hitler and Stalin), but when push comes to shove, arrangements like that will fall apart as one challenges the other for control.

Zarqawi is using Euro's instead of the good old reliable US Greenback? Has the Dollar suffered that much in world opinion?

Jeff~ some aritcles by islamists on that very issue:

*runs back out the door* My job involves travel between three cities, fun stuff! Sometimes I can get by the apartment for a few minutes...

American civilian authorites can catch Ted Kazinski, Ted Bundi and Ted Kennedy, as well as assorted Chicago mobsters, but the whole US military cant catch Zarqawi, even when they know he is only a half mile from them... A long sentence a short idea....I cant be too critical, I'm not there and dont know the circumstances. Maybe the military should brush up on more "creative" planning to capture guys like Zarqawi...

I just looked at the site. This has to be shut down! 706,000 hits to date but I'm not sure I trust their counter.

If this site doesn't qualify for hate speach I'll scream!

I asked information for the phone number for these scumbags, but I was refused the number with a statement that the customer has asked that their number not be provided!

Seems to me the Pentagon, the Senate, the VP, and the President ought to know about this!

Next thing to do is call the internet providers to have this site shut down. Maybe the Syracuse police should know whats going on here!

BillR:

If there is any scent whatsoever of raising money for terrorism, you might want to refer this site to the Internet Haganah which goes after such sites with a great success rate. Not sure what can be done about "hate" sites based in the US other than scream at your congressman and senator, especially if the site makes clearly seditious statements.

Update:
Called Syracuse police department. Asked to file a complaint for a hate speech web site. The guy I spoke with was a veteran of 23 years, but he said the complaint must be made by someone in Syracuse or locally.
I called my local police department to file a complaint, and the woman taking the complaint said that they would and could do nothing about the site.

I became agitated and asked if our conversation was being recorded. She said yes and I asked if sedition and hate speech was against the law. She did not know. I asked to be informed on the status of my complaint before the end of the day.

Fat chance!

Compare and contrast:
A Muslim claim of hate speech and a WASP claim of hate speech.

Why let it out that they found his computer? That seems really foolish!

Geeez,.... is this story life imitating art or what? Anyone been watching the series "24"? Who is imitating who?

yes, this guy is like Habib Mahrwan on "24" !! Just
one step ahead of the U.S Forces. Lets hope the
real life version mission to capture does conclude
successfully by the end of the tv season !

Jakester, you asked: "Why let it out that they found his computer?"

I think it was a great move. Everyone who even THINKS their name or picture or any other information about them is on that computer are going to be pretty angry! By releasing that information, they instill doubt in every one of his associates' mind's in Zarqawi's trustworthiness and spread fear that YOU'RE next which drives them from their jobs and whatever other 'cover' they may have been operating under. Then, you go look for those who haven't showed up for work since you released the information. Works for me.

The ones we don't catch right away will either distance themselves from Zarqawi thereby depriving him of much of his support network, or they'll try to kill him the next time they see him for committing such a major screw-up. And, Zarqawi knows this so.. he's going to now be extremely paranoid about even his most trusted confidants who are going to start viewing him as a liability. Either way, he's now lost his personal computer and his files. He's losing his network, his people, their trust, and most importantly, his self-assuredness. Next mistake may be his last. Wouldn't surprise me to learn that his headless corpse turns up in the gutter of a back alley in a Baghdad slum.

Waterdragon and BillR....oh believe me im not anywhere discouraged by that scumbag website....not by a far shot....if anything stuff like that just makes my resolve that much stronger to see the American and Coalition troops kick these sub-human Islamic scum's ass all the way back to the stone age...ooops, they already live in prehistoric times as it is...lets say kicking their dirty asses into oblivion...much better....and waterdragon, i hope i did not offend with the liberal crack...you may be the first liberal leaning person i know who seems to express support for what America is trying to accomplish in Iraq for the opprressed Iraqis who do want true freedom from Islamic scum....most liberals i know only seem to think of themselves first and fuck the rest of the world....i mean, i know America doesnt want to be seen as the worlds policeman, but how much brutality, MURDER, rape, pillage, do you let go, pretend it isnt going on behind youre back???....who else will do something???...the UN???....oh pleaseeeeeeeee, talk about spineless.....The E.U.???....sure, and the French will learn to all bathe and shave their armpits....the Chinese???....they would just nuke these other people right from the start and the UN would say NOTHING....but America goes in and trys very hard to minimize civilain deaths, which in wartime are IMPOSSIBLE to avoid for those dummies who say it is when bullets are flying and missles and bombs are falling, and the US gets spit on by the friggin pansy ass Europeans and the Michael Moores of the world and i for one and SICK of it....The US govenment needs to step back, take hands off, and let the armed forces in Iraq do its job right....nuff said

looked at that site Billr...what a bunch of rot. Bet it's muslims. Whever writes that stuff is full of vitriol. Viciousness actually is more like it. This is beyond even normal(?) American, America haters. It's some kind of mentally degenerative toxidity. Burning indigestion is one of the driving forces of Islam. Thats why I suspect muslims. Or it could just be the results of a bad burger. Either way, it's bowl-u-lar and this person needs a laxative bad. Those who become full of it will eventually evacuate...a lot...hahaha...happy diarrhea (Allahrrhea to muslims) to forsakethetroops, and may you make frequent trips to the throne of Allah...dont forget to flush...Allah watches for stuff like that...

Elusive?...Slippery?...Who the hell was in charge of this operation and have they never seen COPS? We can catch a guy stealing a car and run his ass down when he bails out (getting sued for excessive force in the process) and watch it all on the evening news but we can't catch this guy? Frustrating...

"Almost" only counts in a game of horse-shoes.

It would be refreshing to read a single report of a "catch" instead of a stream of "almosts".

Jeff M-

The euros being used by Zar-coward are likely part of the ransom that was paid to 'unknown terrorists' in the deal made to 'free' the communist woman Italian 'journalist' -who was released a while back. (Her not-too-swift secret agent mediator was killed by U.S. checkpoint guards when they recklessly approached our wary troops who correctly opened fire on the vehicle... a pity they didn't get her, and not the Italian agent, since I suspect her motives, the reality of the 'kidnapping' and her intentions.)

Thanks Italy.

I think they'll have this s.o.b. Zarq by Memorial Day.

And I hope it is a serious squeeze session to loosen his diseased lips, with Iraqi interrogators doing the asking and 'motivating'.

And a long, slow, excrutiatingly unpleasant payback for his reign of bloodthirsty murder.

The expert researchers at LGF said that Michael Crook has a website:http://www.michaelcrook.com/theweblog/
I for one don't know if it's the same guy, but same name.

Mahdi, your analysis is bang-on. Does everybody want to know why al-Zarqawi escaped? It's because once the U.S. forces realized the find they had in their hot little hands, they let al-Zarqawi go on purpose. There was no point in putting friendly assets in harm's way for one man. Once word gets out on the street that Zarqawi has been severely compromised, then his death at the hands of his Muslim "brothers" will probably a matter of time. So al-Zarqawi can take his chances, or surrender to U.S. forces if he wanted to stay alive. Remember kids, this is the ME where what is impossible today becomes a feasible scenario tomorrow. Just for context, does anyone remember the Enigma machine that the German navy used in WWII? Capturing an intact working Enigma machine was considered far more valuable than an captured enemy sub and/or it's officers who ran the ship. As for that silly site, it is like a big sound signifying nothing. I agree with waterdragon that it is likely a plant by our enemies. Everybody, keep your heads up! Victory in Christ is near!
