Malaysia's prime minister wants enforcement of Islamic morality laws to continue despite a public outcry over a raid early this year on a disco by religious department officials, a news report said Saturday."There is no need to abolish these laws, only the enforcement methods need to be improved," Prime Minister Abdullah Ahmad Badawi was quoted as saying by the New Straits Times newspaper.
Human rights and opposition activists criticized the actions of religious department officials who arrested 100 Muslims at a Kuala Lumpur disco in January for alleged indecent behavior.
The disco patrons claimed they were locked up at the department's headquarters for 10 hours, and accused officials of humiliating the women in the group by commenting on their attire and taking photographs of them.

How long can people go without the freedoms they have gotten a taste for? And can see in movies, on the internet, throughy videos, t.v., etc.?
When the choices are looking at the bent over mufti rear ends of the guys in front of you five times a day, and only the hands and blandly scrubbed faces of cowed women around you- or Britney Spears, Jennifer Lopez, Beyonce Knowles and Jessica Simpson bringing the Islamic Paradise down to Earth, with music on the disco dance floor, somehow I'm betting that the puritannical Koranic republe will meet the same fate as Oliver Cromwell's England.

These "morality" laws are nothing but an excuse to exercise their infantile, sick hatred and fear of women. Note the humiliation they heaped on the women. Ooooh, big, macho men. Does that make you feel empowered and studly? When you degrade and humiliate women? Islam is the perfect haven for men who have major issues with women. Like an insane asylum. So when something so innocuous like a disco comes along, they feel so threatened. It would be hilarious if it wasn't so disturbing and hurtful to others.
And what of the Christian morality laws in the UK, US and other European countires?

I distinctly remember George Bush saying a few years ago that sodomy laws in Texas should not be enforced but kept as symbolic.
How many conservative christians here are willing to say that their morality laws are OK but Muslim ones are not or that the 'reasoning' of the Malaysia PM is despicable but when from Bush it is sound?

Christian morality laws certainly are no longer a significant factor inhibiting freedom in the United States and certainly are nothing like Shariah restrictions in Muslim countries.
Yeah, Bigsleep, hopefully the conservatives will lose in Malaysia. As for the "backlash" coming in Iran, do you know something I don't? Is it wishfull thinking? I mean, I'm hoping for a backlash in Iran too, but I don't expect one and it sure as hell doesn't appear "imminent."
