How dare she suggest that police should pay more attention to Muslims than to Mennonites? From the Asian News UK, with thanks to Kaosktrl:
Home Office minister and Salford MP Hazel Blears sparked outrage when she stated that Muslims should just accept that they are going to be stopped and searched by police more than any other group. Speaking from the European Parliament in Brussels, MEP for the North West of England Sajjad Karim lambasted her comments as "disgraceful, yet enlightening".
"This is a declaration of the racist and Islamophobic intent and effect behind this governments terrorism legislation. It is a clear indication that the UK is now institutionally Islamophobic. No longer can the government hide behind empty words and promises that anti-terror legislation will not be specifically utilised against British Muslims."
Mr Karim, who serves on the subcommittee on human rights, and has been an outspoken critic of the UK's anti-terror legislation issue for some time, went on to state: "When the Home Secretary Charles Clarke announced his proposals regarding 'control orders' in January my main concern was that Muslim communities would be targeted and criminalised by the legislation. Ms Blears' comments have added extra weight to my fears. I am now in no doubt that the government's ideas on the safety of our country do not involve regarding Muslims as equal citizens."
"Ms Blears has said, in essence, that the state considers all Muslims a potential threat to the country. British Muslims are now guilty until proven innocent, and considered fair game."
Mrs Blears was reported to have told House of Commons committee examining the way the UK anti-terror laws are working that "there was no getting away from it", because the terrorist threat came from people "falsely hiding behind Islam"." Muslims face increased stop and search.
She denied her remarks were prejudicial to Muslims and claimed she had been misquoted.
