Among those arrested was an uncle who called authorities after seeing the suspected bomber's body in a newspaper photograph.
The suspect, Hassan Rafaat Ahmed Bashandi, was a student who became a religious extremist after his father's death, the Interior Ministry said....
In the tiny apartment, police found CDs containing data downloaded from the Internet on waging Islamic holy war and building bombs. At Bashandi's aunt's house, police found 43 fireworks from which the gunpowder had been removed....
Mamdouh Raafat, a neighbor who knew the family for two decades, denied that Bashandi was an extremist.

Well! They pray and read the Qur'an! How could they have turned out to be terrorists! It's...unheard-of!

From what passing mention there is on the national news, it appears he was in Africa spreading the Gospel, and thus may have been tracked by the bomber(s).
The new question then would be:

It is common in Egypt and other M.E countries that families of suspected "Islamists" are tortured in front of them in order to win confessions and the like. I'm sure that most of the commentators on this board approve of it, no?

They definitely got the zero 0 symbol from Indian scholars. Indian scholars were responsible for much of the work on the really big numbers, such as a million, which would not have been possible without zero. I can't remember whether the rest of the numbers were also from India or Persia. But the concept was certaining not original to the arabs.

Algebra came from India through Arabia to Europe. Mohammadanism certainly had nothing to do with its inception. There where three different types of arithmetic systems used in 11th century Arabia.
