A killing commanded by Islamic law

Although that is what this article is about -- "There was no option. This is what Islam commands us." -- the WaPo headlines this one "A Killing Commanded by Tradition." (Thanks to EPG for the link.)

Within an hour, the entire village would learn that the 25-year-old married woman had been discovered in a darkened nearby hut with her lover.

Within two days, Amina was dead -- killed by her fellow villagers April 20 after the men of the community ruled that she had violated Islamic law by having an affair with a neighbor....

Soon Amina's father, the elders and a crowd of villagers had gathered outside. Mohammad unlocked the chain and flung open his front door. At the back of the room sat his son, Karim, on a floor cushion.

Next to him sat Amina. Her expression was once again blank, Aslam said.

It threw Aslam into a rage.

"I shouted, 'What is she doing here? Give her to me! I will kill her!' " he recounted last week. "I was so shocked, and my Islamic dignity was so offended."

But the other villagers restrained him, Aslam and other witnesses said.

"We told him, 'No, no! This should be handled by sharia now,' " his brother Hashem recalled, referring to the Islamic legal code.

"Fine, I will give her over to sharia then," Aslam said he responded. "Whatever sharia says, I will do it."...

Under sharia, the punishment for adultery is death by stoning. But the code requires that there be undeniable proof of the crime -- for instance, multiple witnesses to the sex act, a confession, or other signs such as an inexplicable pregnancy....

But no one involved disputes that the villagers were unanimous in their view that according to the dictates of Islam, the proper resolution of the case would be for Karim, as an unmarried man, to be lashed and Amina, as a married woman, to be stoned to death.

Early that afternoon, one of the mullahs went to fetch a stick with which to whip Karim as Yousaf took his leave of the villagers.

Then they watched Yousaf's turban slowly vanish over a mountain path and, along with it, Amina's last hope.

Punishment

There are two, conflicting accounts of Amina's death.

According to her great-uncle Assan, after the shura reached its verdict, a group of villagers came to the dark storage room and took her away to be stoned.

"She knew what was going to happen to her," Assan said softly. "She was screaming and sobbing."

Amina's paternal uncle, Mohammad Azim, said he watched as the villagers forced Amina down a muddy path toward a patch of soft earth along a riverbank surrounded by stones, a few yards from the edge of the village.

It was a beautiful spot, shaded by an enormous tree and offering a charming view of the village clinging to the mountainside.

It was also an ideal place for a stoning.

"They dug a hole in the ground right here," Azim said, pointing to a spot in the clearing six days later. "Then they buried Amina up to her waist, with her arms pinned by her side."

Azim said Amina's hair was covered in a head scarf, and that she was crying in terror as nearly a hundred men gathered in a circle around her and began throwing small rocks at her head.

"I couldn't watch for more than a few minutes," Azim said. Instead, he said, he walked up to Amina's parents' house and waited with them in silence during the two hours it took to kill her.

Several villagers and Amina's mother said that they, too, believe she was stoned. And a few said they had seen the bloody hole after she was removed from it.

But no one else would admit to witnessing the actual stoning, much less participating in it. And the ground where Amina was allegedly buried to her waist showed little sign of disturbance six days after her death -- possibly because, as Azim and other villagers contend, they had refilled the hole and then the river had flooded over it, or possibly because the stoning never happened.

Several other villagers, including Amina's uncle, Hashem, tell a very different story.

Hashem said the villagers handed Amina over to her uncles, including himself and Azim. Their original intention was to hang her, Hashem said. But as they were leading her away, they became increasingly angry and started to beat her with their fists.

"It was dark," he said. "All of us were striking her, and then she fainted and we saw that she was on the ground and not breathing. Maybe she had a heart attack."

Whatever the means of her death, Amina's parents said her bruised corpse was returned to them sometime between afternoon and evening prayers that day.

Amina's mother, Nessa, said she did not grieve.

"My daughter was a criminal and a sinner who brought dishonor on my name," Nessa said hotly several days later. "And I should be blamed for her death, not anyone else, because I told my tribe they could kill her. I forgave them for spilling her blood."...

If Amina had been allowed to live, Nessa added, the shame of it would have forced Nessa to leave the only home she had ever known and a valley in which her family had lived for generations.

"But now I can walk everywhere in the village with my head high. . . . I'm happy. Extremely, extremely happy," she shouted. The tone in her voice betrayed no joy.

Then Nessa covered her face with her hands....

Amina's father Aslam, however, was released from police custody in Faizabad after a night of questioning, on grounds that he was not directly responsible.

Just before embarking on the long walk back to Gazon, he sat on a metal chair in a room in the police station, reflecting on all that had happened in the last several days.

Unlike the feelings of his wife Nessa, Aslam's anger at Amina had by now given way to sorrow.

"I feel so sad for her. She was so young," he said, as his eyes grew glassy with tears. "I really miss her now. . . . I will miss her voice, and our conversations in the evenings."

There was much he wished he could go back and change. "If only she had told me that she did not want to go back to her husband," he said. "I would have done something about it. I would have counseled her."

But he said he harbored no doubt that she deserved to die after she admitted to committing adultery.

"There was no option. This is what Islam commands us."

Sharia = death sentence to womankind.

These creatures are less than human.
What an evil, poisonous cult.

So, Shukri, what say you? Was justice served?

"There was no option. This is what Islam commands us"...yup...sure does dont it...

Disgusting. Islam abuses women, plain and simple. As for "restoring honor" I'd rather keep company with swine, prostitutes, and drug addicts than shake hands with a man that would kill his own daughter for having sex.

"I was so shocked, and my Islamic dignity was so offended."

I hope the webmaster and fellow JW fans will forgive me for my profanity, but what a petulant little pussy this man is.

I swear to God that my daughters marry a Muslim or convert to Islam over my dead body.

I notice two things: that people could choose to interpret shari'a more strictly, ie require multiple witnesses to the sex act, which would free them of the "responsibility" of killing most of these "offenders." It's similar to several Jewish laws, such as the one about the disobedient child having to be killed: the rules are so strict that no one ever falls under them.
I also notice that the mother does not seem free to express her regret at what happened to her daughter. If she did express regret or anger, suspicion would be cast on her. She must present a perfectly "honorable" front to preserve her life and reputation. Her husband is not subject to as much intimidation and has a little more leeway in what he can express.

What is wrong with these people ?!! Where is the love, the compassion ? These ignorant, primitive people are befuddled with islam.

Shirki won't ever respond to this one.

It would offend his islamic dignity.

Geoff

Another point: a woman can be stoned to death if there is "undeniable proof" that she broke the law of a god for whom there is no proof whatever.

Apparently, also, "undeniable proof" includes just finding that woman in someone else's house. "Bring your proofs, if ye are truthful"...I could go on, but it's too typical.

Imam Geoff
Lion of Man

Love and forgiveness are absent in the koran. Only death and destruction.
Again the question.... What kind of religion causes people to think that murder, mutilation, rape, etc. is a GOOD thing? Who is their god?

Let the west take note - this is the behavior of backward savages .......this is what the enemy would put on all men , it is typical of this cult .
Death is their beginning and death is their end .

This is the true face of the enemy that is at the gate .

Let the west take note - this is the behavior of backward savages .......this is what the enemy would put on all men , it is typical of this cult .

Geoff, there need not even be that modicum of "proof". A man can just kill his wife, sister, daughter, or any Jew/Christian/Hindu walking by (like one to whom he owes money or one that he has raped perhaps) and claim that he/she "blasphemed the Prophet" or "defiled the Koran" and no big woop; case closed. It happens all the time.

************************************************

Again the question.... What kind of religion causes people to think that murder, mutilation, rape, etc. is a GOOD thing? Who is their god?

Carolyn, it's not a question of who their god is. It's a question of whether their culture has advanced to the point of questioning the dogma and absolute authority of scripture/clergy. Christians did the same damn things: rape, rapine, murder, etc. until after the Enlightenment (and in varying degrees thereof).

No; I don't necessarily mean the "Crusades." I'm talking about The Albigensians, the sack of Cairo and Constantinople, the pogroms against Jews, the Heresy Massacres, the slaughter of the Knights Templar, the Inquisition, the witch trials, etc. etc.

Please note that I am not trying to equivocate Islam with Christianity. The transgressions of Christianity are nothing compared to those of Islam, if for no other reason that Islam is STILL DOING IT.

This is the problem with depending on religion to dictate one's morality system: if a leader in your religion/personality cult tells you to do something crazy, you may do it. Jim Jones said "Drink this poison and die."... anyone not in his cult would have said "f*** you; you drink that crap if you want."

This why I say one should always question. If it's the truth, it should stand up to critical inquiry. Islam doesn't. And I beg your pardon, because I know a lot of you will disagree, but Christianity and Judaica don't either. The best thing about Christains and Jews is that they DON'T obey the old scriptural fairytale laws, like murdering disobedient children, "witches", effeminate men, and fallen women.

"There was no option. This is what Islam commands us."

NO. There is always a choice. You should have taken her and your family to the American Embassy, renounced Islam, asked for asylum, and come to America to work as an interpreter for the US government. And get yourself some books by Jean Paul Sartre, Jeremy Bentham, and Ibn Warraq.

You could have stood up for your daughter's right to do as she chooses. It would have been much more honorable for you to choose to fight your own neighbors, even unto your own death, than to allow this DISHONOR to fall upon your own daughter; namely that you let a mob kill her without even lifting a finger in resistance.

You coward. You remind me of those chickensh*t Nazi cowards at Nurmberg. "I didn't have a choice. The SS would have killed me if I had disobeyed orders to kill all those Jews." Oh yeah? You should have chosen death, and there would be streets named after you and your brave honor. Instead you are just going to be hanged. (Unless of course you can make a break for Egypt of Argentina.)

kj~ in regards to what used to be done in the past, may I also add the 'Children's Crusade'- probably not many people know it ever happened, nor that when those kids (30,000 or more!) reached their destination on the Mediteranean coast, they were summarily sold into slavery by the people the leader of the troup had contracted with.

Hmp. Ridley Scott would love that one.

Folks, this is one example of why Muslims should be excluded from any office requiring an oath to uphold the Constitution.

Their "religion" forbids them from embracing the principles contained in the Constitution; the taking of the oath itself is "anti-Islamic."

Such an oath is required by judges, military members, many politicians entering office, etc. Such a prohibition would help stop the process of infiltration into our country's government (read Paul Sperry's book, "Infiltration") and substantially slow down the efforts of their fifth column.

This is every bit as important as the physical protection of our borders; this prohibition is an intellectual and moral equivalent of the "Border Patrol."When we left, I got dirty looks from the muslim parents. I am sorry but I cannot trust muslims period.

My apologies, Ummagumma--I agree totally that Muslims are not to be trusted, but I'm not sure just how your comment got where it is.

Islamic dignity? Quod est?

All the neighbors said the husband was a very kind, compassionate provider who respected women and was a gentle caring lover to Amina.

How do these animals live with themselves after doing this to another human being? There is honor in forgiveness and understanding. Having no mercy and killing this woman in one of the most cruel and inhumane ways possible is not.

As for "restoring honor" I'd rather keep company with swine, prostitutes, and drug addicts …

Yeah Gary, I read about that. That is what Christianity USED to do. Thanks to enlightenment thinkers, rationalists, and reformers, they stopped.

Christians USED to keep slaves. They stopped.

Christians USED to kill uppity women ("witches"). They stopped.

Christians USED to colonize and take over areas. They stopped.

Christians USED to (etc. etc). They stopped.

Now if we could just get Islam to join the modern world, maybe things would be all right.

I don't understand how this reflects Islam badly.

Doesn't the state have the right to put criminals to death? If so, might it not have the right to do so to adulterers?

I'm not saying I personally would like to see this penalty instituted; but if another soverign nation fells that this is so grave, in that it attacks the familt structure, who are we to judge?

If such a punishment does exist, however, I agree that it should at least be consistent and apply to the men as well.

Stoning, too, seems unncessarily cruel.

The point is, adultery being such a gravely sinful act, I understand a society putting adulterers to death. I don't like it, but I understand it.

Does anyone know what the corresponding punishment was in Christian countries of the Middle Ages?

The state may well have the right to put "criminals" to death, but sex, even with a person you are not married to or adultery is not a criminal offence. Religious people (hey, who knows, maybe even god) may see it as a sin but it hardly comes into the category of a capital criminal act. Don't even try and go through the mental gymnastics required to makes this OK. There is nothing OK about it. It is primitive, backward, savage, barbaric behaviour that mankind should be above by now. The fact that there are people in our modern times that embrace and even give succour and provide the apologetics to allow this to flourish churns my stomach.

Up until very, *very* recently all States considered adultery to be a crime.

And if you ask me it should still be that way. It's a violation of justice, the civil contract enacted at the marriage.

The thing is this: I don't feel that it's my place to label a given act objectively wrong unless it can be shown to be so under objective moral criteria.

I am a Catholic Christian; certainly no relativist, and certainly n ofriend of Islam. Nor am I what one would consider a "radical traditionalist"; I'm just trying to look at laws and customs like these without my cultural blinders.

Also, let me say that I do not believe that Islam is a religion of peace; I am no apologist for this religion, and I believe that many of its teachings are contrary to both natural and divine law.

That having been said, I am not convinved that the state execution of an adulterer is *never* justified. Maybe if we took this more seriously our marriages would not be in the shambles they are today.

I follow the prudential judgement of most Catholic bishops (including the Pope), that in today's circumstances the death penalty is seldom necessary in today's climate to promote justice or safeguard society against criminals. Whatever punishments the State should give to adulterers should be determined in this light.

And all this having been said, why is it so incredible to believe that God has not only commanded, but solemnly approved, of this kind of punishment (i.e. what Islam dictates)?

Biblical Jews punished adultery this way.

My point only is that the only way to fight against these kinds of laws is not to exploit them and point fingers (i.e. "This doesn't sound nice to me, so it must be bad"); we must attack the very foundations of Islamic claims.

Meanwhile, one does have to admit at least the possibiity that God could mandate the stoning of adulterers, and that such is not intrinsically unjust.

"I swear to God that my daughters marry a Muslim or convert to Islam over my dead body."

Sounds like something a Muslim would say . . .

(not *about* Muslims of course)

A very small minority of non-Christians not behaving according to Jesus Christ's example did some things in a very tough environment as a way of maintaining order and cohesion for their very early colonial survival. It doesn’t make it right but it’s the truth and the real Christians put a stop to it. Also, it didn’t happen near as frequently as the revisionist history texts and promoters like our pal kj would lie and say that it did.

The left have invented these exaggerations, distortions, half truths and outright lies about history. These myths are perpetuated with as much of a religious zeal that can be found in any extremist religion. But more likely it’s not simply believed (maybe in kj’s case it is) but rather it is calculated as an means to an end.

This continued phony anti-Christian propaganda and revisionism is concocted and promoted by cultural revolutions bent on eliminating the Church, families and all traditional institutions for their own liberal selfish interests.

The liberal left, through their infiltration of the educational system, the press and the entertainment industry, etc. continues to and has been walking hand in hand with enemies of the West with increasing voracity for the last 30-40 years.

The results: Higher numbers of violent crime, higher teenage suicides, higher numbers of unwed pregnancies, psychological trauma of abortion, family trauma, higher drug addiction, lower birth rates that in turn increase immigration and the list goes on.

Dominvs,

Please sod off. Thankyou.

Geoff

*The thing is this: I don't feel that it's my place to label a given act objectively wrong unless it can be shown to be so under objective moral criteria.*

What criteria are you using in this instance ? The superstitious dogma of orthodox religion perhaps ?

You are a dangerous idiot.

States have a natural right to prosecute crimes which threated the common good.

You don't see where adultery falls into this category?

Posted by: DominvsVobiscvm-

"Does anyone know what the corresponding punishment was in Christian countries of the Middle Ages?"

If they were acting as Christians, then they should follow Christ's teaching, "Let he who is without sin cast the first stone."

Adolphus Obfuscatum is funny--in a Jerry Lewis kind of way. Classical Liberal that I am, I still opt for following the foot-steps of my much maligned and distant relative William: March on those lands of savagery, beat them into subjection, rule them like ill-tempered slavemasters, crush any dissent, and in a hundred years they'll be as civilized as anyone on the planet today.

When do we win? When our enemies have stopped pleading for mercy to the point that they are us!

"If they were acting as Christians, then they should follow Christ's teaching, 'Let he who is without sin cast the first stone.'"

Traditional Christians have never understood this incident to indicate an absolute prohibition of capital punishment.

DominvsVobiscvm said: "The point is, adultery being such a gravely sinful act, I understand a society putting adulterers to death. I don't like it, but I understand it."

So who is the person without sin who will cast the first stone, or trigger or lethal injection?

Yes, people having consensual sex outside of marriage is wiping out western civilisation. I can see the mushroom cloud now.

**States have a natural right to prosecute crimes which threated the common good. You don't see where adultery falls into this category?**

I'm happy to report that I do not see any upside to stoning this poor wretched woman to death. It was a barbaric, savage act of violence committed by primitive, ignorant (barely) humans who have had their brains befuddled with superstitious nonsense. What next, burning witches ?

Dominvs Vobiscvm, who asks about punishment for adultery in medieval times -

Punishment varied from country to country, and depended on the social class of the condemned - but stoning to death was never a part of the legal code, although women who murdered their husbands were likely to be burnt at the stake.

In England, prior to the act of 1857, adultery was not grounds for divorce, so there was no legal remedy for an adulterous wife/husband. In some cases a woman may have even have had children by her lover and raised them with her husbands children. A wife could actually be sold in the marketplace for this crime.

Public penance was popular from early medieval times for a number of sins.

In the south of France, Eleanor of Aquitaine (in the 12th century) created the concept of courtly love and the most beautiful poetry and music were composed at her court, and in honour of her. She and her ladies accompanied the King on his Crusade to the Holyland.

Women were treated with increasing bigotry as the Middle Ages progressed, but nowhere in the western world were they buried up their necks and stoned to death.

Adolphus Obfuscatum is more than a mere urban legend in his own mind. Being twelve times more pious than I, and he, being trapped in a colostomy bag of tropes, I have decided the man knows all, sees all, he walks, he talks, he crawls on his belly like a snake. Yes folks, he the amazing Nazi apologist with all the answers.

How can these things be known to mortal men such as I? Voices, friends. Voices.

Domini,

how is adultery a sin or a crime?

A person's sexuality is their own. No business of yours or anyone else's.

You talk about adultery breaking up the family unit, but doesn't killing this woman break up the family unit, completely and irrevocably?

My first thought on reading this thread is that DominvsVobiscum is a muslim troll. Don't the arguments sound familiar?

during the two hours it took to kill her.

It is so horrible to read that. I sit here - and I can't even express how it makes me feel.

It's just too wicked

What they did to her - is FAR WORSE than what she did.

They took a life - and in a very BRUTAL way - that they did not give - no - nor can replace.

WOE be unto them!
