From the Gulf Daily News, "Go-ahead for show," with thanks to Skeetstreet:
A LIVE performance by stars from the Arab reality TV show, Star Academy, is going ahead at a new venue and under a different name, sources told the GDN yesterday.Islamist MPs had tried to block the show, but sources said the Information Ministry gave it the go-ahead after seeking assurances from organisers.
It is understood those behind the event have promised it will be "decent" and respect the teachings of Islam.
As such, sources said performers would dress conservatively to ensure nobody is offended.
They added there would be a separate family area in the audience so that single men and women are not mixed together...
It is said the venue was changed to avoid a repeat of violence that marred a concert by Lebanese singer Nancy Ajram in October 2003.
Rioters went on the rampage outside that event, claiming the singer was provocative and against Islam.
One of the concerns was that the event, which went ahead at the BIEC, was too close to a residential area...
I made these comments over at JW on the Pakistan: Jihadis destroy music shops thread but I'll post them again, this time with spelling mistakes corrected.
The Islamic injunction against music is the one I personally found hardest to believe. I believe that, if pursued to this level it will be the tenet that finally convinces the unconvinced of the nature of the beastie that we are dealing with.
There was a children's program which many parents thought was far-fetched called Oscar's Orchestra. http://www.collingwoodohare.com/oscar/oscar.html
Although much of the background was reminiscent of the resistance against the Nazis (the city of New Vienna for a start) the death of music and song owed more to Islam than anything else.
Because there is a lot of music from Middle Eastern and Asian countries (much of which is Jewish or Indian), and the ubiquitous Yusef Islam (to think that at 12 years of age I was once part of a "Girl Band" at school whose only song was Matthew and Son. Needless to say we didn't last long) not many people are aware of this injunction, which was discussed a few days ago, OT with some of the Moslem posters. A lot of Moslems deny it's existence, or argue that it applies only to certain insruments or styles.
To quote from the site http://www.daruliftaa.com/question.asp?txt_QuestionID=q-12513589
"Young Muslims drive around in their cars with the music fully blasted. The increasing popularity of music, which is prevalent in our society, poses a great threat to the Muslims. Music is a direct ploy of the non-Muslims. One of the main causes for the decline of the Muslims is their involvement in useless entertainment".
And entertainment does not come much more useless than Pop Idol. Sorry I forgot Big Brother.
Because there is a lot of music from Middle Eastern and Asian countries (much of which is Jewish or Indian)
In Britain there is a thriving Indian music scene which is popular and successful and fills out nighclubs and concert halls and they are all run by Sikhs and Hindus. Pakistanis dont participate because their families view music as 'haraam' and associate it with Sikh and Hindu infidels.
This is one reason why people really need to understand the difference between Indians in the UK and Pakistani/Bangladeshi Muslims. Nothing could be a better example of the difference between Muslims and Hindus/Sikhs than this terrible, life suppressing hatred of music, the most primal and wonderful expression of life itself.

I had Bhangra in mind when I wrote that. My husband is playing Fairport Convention as I write this.
I once played Dave Swarbrick's The English Fiddler to a young Mestizo man. So infectious he could not sit still.
That's what Islam does not want.

With Pakistani Muslims the heat of the religion comes from the constant need to re-affirm Islam to make sure that Pakistanis do not lapse into too much love for the soft things of their culture which would make them get in touch with their infidel roots and make them realise that Sikhs and Hindus are human beings who celebrate life and their culture with their music and art. Hence the need to keep them away from that horror, the need to constantly purify themselves through Islam. Pakistani Islam is especially neurotic.
Art and music, the stuff of life and joy. Anything that despises these things, especially music, is to be despised itself. Anything that hates music is a belief system that is against life itself.
Choose Life.

My cousin has married into a Sikh family. I was speaking to her sister-in-law and she is a teacher in the Black Country. The Indian children at school wanted to learn Classical Indian Dancing. These girls are eight or nine years old. Once a week, a traditional Indian dance teacher would come to the school dressed up in sari's and put bells on the ankles of the girls and they would have lots of fun. It wasnt just Sikh and Hindu girls, all the white and Afro-Caribbean children loved it too, they joined in and loved dressing up and doing this traditional Indian dance, it was great fun.
Except for the Pakistani girls, who had to sit in another room all alone, because their parents withdrew them from the class because they believed it was corrupting and immoral.I suppose that their parents thought that all those Indian and black and white girls were in some way immoral, or training to be harlots just by dancing. Anyway, she said that the girls wanted to join in desperately, but they couldnt. It was a tiple sin; dancing, dressing up in nice colours, and most terrible of all, dancing the dance of the Indian infidel.
They just sat in a dull room, wearing their black hijabs, playing with crayons watching with a kind of yearning, as all the other girls in their class dressed up and danced and had fun.
I wonder what kind of depraved mind views eight year old girls dancing as something corrupting. I have never been able to get the image of those poor girls out of my head, isolated and desperate to be part of the gang, to have fun and music and colour and life. Its heartbreaking.

I could not agree with you more.
I posted a few weeks ago about 2 Moslem girls I saw out shopping with an older woman. The older woman had full black cape, although her face was free, both girls, who were about 6 and 9 wore long dull coats, and the older wore hijab. The two girls slipped into Claire's Accessories and I saw the older one fingering something pink and fluffy with a look I described as naked longing. The old crone barked something at them and they followed her meekly down the street.
Yet 35 years ago I was at school with many Asian girls mostly from East Africa. One day there was an almighty row over Kashmir which started in English and finished in Urdu with half the gang not talking to the other for several weeks. Then moved by the Bangladesh floods of 1971? and inspired by George Harrison,s Concert they got talking again and put on a fund raising concert of dancing and fashion. Which included the Moslem girls, one of whom I recall was part Persian. For years I have carried that incident with me as an example of humanity and friendship transcending politics etc. When I visit my home town as I do once or twice a year and see the grim black robes, I wonder if they are the daughters or grandaughters of my old classmates.
"Music is a direct ploy of the non-Muslims." Thus spake the imam.
Really! I do suppose that a turban does not lend itself well to being lined with tinfoil. But just a reminder, in case this most holy gentleman is reading, to make sure the shiny side is out.
Hmm...I would love to check out that show! Does anybody know if they are going to play this online (via video stream)?
I can only imagine the interview segment for "Arab Idol".
Interviewer: "And if you could have one wish to come true, no matter what it was, what would it be?"
Contestant: "Peace for the world. Except for the kufr; for them, only death, conversion or jizya in the eventual islamic caliphate. Can I say hello to my family and mahdam friends? Shouts out to Rasulallah!"

Muslim codes of morality... what hypocrisy. Many of the popular India Actors are Muslims (Khans) when they dance or sing nobody has any obejctions
Pakistanis dance to tunes to Bollywood songs. When they're own women go kissing Hindu actors in India there's a riot but when a Muslim actor kisses a Hindu actress Pakistanis relish it. It's nothing but anti-feminine crap. Probably Mohammed had an aversion to music. Thank God he had no problems with toilet seats otherwise Muslims all over UK would have been peeing and pissing in open. Pakis dont realise that they themselves r the descendents of Hindus & they share the same cultural heritage with Hindus. For years they wanted to believe that they were of Arab ancestry and Pakistan was a part of Persia. I read one Pakistani Grade 7 History book (Sindhi) which say that b4 1947 India was a part of Pakistan! Moreover many westerners believe (wrongly) that it is immpossible to diffrentiate btwn Indians,Pakis & Bangladeshi
Heres one quick guide i found on "I'm Not Paki"
an artice by a UK Sikh
:
Indian

Signs: Westernised, mixes freely.
Pakistanis
Features: Caucasian
Skin Colour: Ranges from White to Brown
Signs: Wears traditional garments often, puts "inshallah" in evryothr sentence, tend to mix within his own group, generally blue collared.
Bangladeshi

I dunno wether this is a true classification, but ethnically Indians and Pakis r related but Bengalis are of mixed Aryan-Burmese ethnicity.

Good Morning FM
Is there an on-line link to that article? I just tried the title on search and got the chavscum forum. Which I don't think is quite what you had in mind.
I know that the differences can be distinguished, but knowing the pickles I have got into by thinking a New Zealander was Australian (which are both recent descendents of my own culture)I am always wary of getting it wrong.
Now I can usually recognise a Moslem (hijab and fluffy beard are a bit of a giveaway)unless very westernised, but not whether they are from Pakistan or Bangladesh.
35 years ago my school friends all wore the same school uniform of skirt(it was the era of the miniskirt),shirt, tie and cardigan with navy trousers underneath the skirt. Afterschool it was shalwar kameeze and gauzy scarf, sometimes a sari for best. These days the only saris I see are worn by women of my own age, like my GP.

*lol* Come visit Pennsylvania Dutch country sometime :P But not on a weekend. The tourists are thick as flies and those roads haven't been widened since the 20s.
