I just received a form email from Daniel Okrent, Public Editor of the New York Times:
Thank you for your comments. Everything sent to this mailbox is read by either me or my associate, Arthur Bovino. If a further reply is appropriate, you will be hearing from us shortly.
The only problem is that I did not send any message to Daniel Okrent.
Likewise my friend Ali Sina of Faithfreedom.org recently received a hostile message denouncing him and his work, signed by...Robert Spencer.
Clearly someone or some group is using my name and email address. I don't think there is anything I can do to stop this, so I am stating it publicly here: messages are being sent in my name that I did not write. If you have received a message from me that contains foul language or departs from my stated positions, it isn't actually from me. If you aren't sure, please contact me at director@jihadwatch.org.
Dear Mr. Spencer,
Does this mean that you don't really need my bank account number to deposit a large sum of money that would otherwise be confiscated by the Nigerian government?
Rats.
Speaking of which, I've received several e-mails from someone claiming to be the daughter of some African dignitary who was jailed, and later died. Luckily for her, he left her a fortune and she somehow needed my help to obtain this huge sum of money.
Of course, I was offered a part of this treasure if it were to be recovered. My response to them was simple. "Lady, you got the wrong number, this is D.C. Watson, not Indiana freakin Jones.
This speaks volumes about the Muslim fear of Islam being exposed for what it really is.
Miss Moneypenny, I am ROFL!
Robert,
Well, now you know you are having an impact when people start to stoop so low as to impersonate you via email.
Lies and dopplegangery from some supporter of Islam?! No! Say it isn't so!
...
Remember this Mr. Spencer.....your enemy's ideology is based on a lie and as such it is nothing for them to lie to harm you....In Islam, the ends justify the means.....anything goes with that mentality!!
This just sounds like a clever way to attack. To cause confusion or hard feelings.
One of the dangers of the internet is that anyone can be anyone at any time. That makes it fun, creative and dangerous at the same time.
Muslims willingness to lie about almost everything, reminds me of a line in an old Paul Robeson movie. He was a native chief speaking to a British miltary officer. The Brit asked him a question and he replied. "Why, I would lie to most anyone if I thought it would do me any good, but I would NEVER lie to YOU, Mr Sandy, which also was a lie.
See any similarities???
I understand that you need to state that this is happening, as you should.
On a side note, this action taken by the perpitrator reflects the success that you are having and the light that you are shining on the subject. They are concerned by your success, and obviously visiting your site. Which if they are visiting your site, we should be having proper intelligant postings and not rantings.
It is almost like the game as a child, "hot and cold". The closer to the truth you get the hotter it will get. And if you are cold you are obviously not doing anything right.
Kutos to you Robert.
You do not stand alone....
This sort of garbage is happening to you all too frequently, sir. Look into some email authentication technologies.
One of the easiest and most effective authentication systems is a public/private key system invented by Phil Zimmerman. It is called PGP, which stands for Pretty Good Privacy. It can even be used to "sign" postings on this and any other comment board.
PGP is used by many human rights activists around the world to securely communicate. It is also used to verify the true source of messages sent via email and other channels.
If the returns are automatic replies, don't the originals have to originate from your email address?
Are you certain that the site has not been infiltrated/hacked? You could have a virus, someone could have gained access to your password, etc. You definitely need professional help with this.
Have you consulted Charles?
CeeGee,
If the site had been hacked, I suspect we would be seeing jihadist messages appearing on it by now.
All that someone needs to do to send a message from my email address is fill out a comment form somewhere and put in my email on the line asking for an email address. Then the form response will go back to me.
No hacking necessary.
Cordially
Robert Spencer
Mr. Spencer:
While you were drafting your response to me I consulted two "experts" (defintely not my area) who said essentially the same thing you did (although they elaborated on all the possibilities extensively). They agreed that there is nothing you can do to stop the phenomena as they are currently manifesting, (except perhaps an email authentication program as mentioned above? I didn't ask about that.).

These attempts to divide and conquer are so unbelievably primitive. I The average third grader does better than that!
D.C. says: Speaking of which, I've received several e-mails from someone claiming to be the daughter of some African dignitary who was jailed, and later died. Luckily for her, he left her a fortune and she somehow needed my help to obtain this huge sum of money.

Wow, D.C., She WAS lucky! Except that she reached you instead of some knucklehead...
We've had several of this kind of thing--one was the son of an "African prince" who was jailed and terribly tortured while in prison, and needed extensive surgery of the kind not available in Nigeria, so needed to come to the U.S and could we help with a small donation. Several others (all from Nigeria--what's going on over there?), like your lady, have stated they have large amounts of money in accounts but they need the help of U.S. citizens to get hold of it, and in exchange... Well, you know the drill.
We just junk all this sort of thing--don't reply at all.
These are called 419 fraud, after the appropriate section of the Nigerian penal code, even when they come from other African countries. I have had them from Zimbabwe and South Africa. I know of churches that got specially pitched "Christian" sob stories although one church organisation got one from a "devout Moslem lady"
NEVER reply, that just confirms that they have reached a valid e-mail address. Unless you happen to have the nerve of these reverse scammers http://money.guardian.co.uk/scamsandfraud/story/0,13802,1086308,00.html

Mr. Spencer-
I wondered why you were emailing to ask if I needed any of the 'enlargement treatments' you were offering.
I was about to email back saying, in the immor(t)al words of Groucho Marx: "I haven't had any complaints yet."
Glad this clears everything up.
Was this link in the email for real?
