Mark Houser writes in the Pittsburgh Tribune Review, "The battleground: Europe has become a hiding place for terrorists"
Editors note: To find out what governments and courts are doing to stop the growing threat of Islamic terrorist groups in Europe, reporter Mark Houser visited Belgium, the Netherlands, France and Spain in March and April on a journalism fellowship from the German Marshall Fund of the United States. Today's stories are the first in a series of reports on what he discovered.Despite the brutal slaying of an Amsterdam filmmaker and tension broiling between Muslims and non-Muslims, Dutch courts continue a string of acquittals in terrorism trials.
Europe, the cradle of Western Civilization, also is a hiding place for enemies plotting its ruin.
The most infamous, Mohammed Atta, e-mailed U.S. flight schools and devised the airliner hijackings that would kill nearly 3,000 Americans on Sept. 11, 2001, while living in an apartment in Hamburg, Germany. A Spanish court is now deciding if an al-Qaida cell in Madrid helped Atta's group with money and a safe house...
America remains a prime target. In the apartment of one Madrid suspect still at large, Spanish police found detailed diagrams of Grand Central Station.
Another suspect had a map of Pittsburgh in his apartment. Investigators don't know why.
Europe has an estimated 23 million Muslims -- about 10 times as many as America -- mostly from the Middle East and North Africa. Some are recent immigrants; others were invited by the host governments in the 1960s to provide cheap labor and stayed...

Lets not forget something that Michael Moore
never want you to know, there were about 25,000 people that got out of the WTC buildings just after the first plane hit.
I took the time to research the event and here's some overlooked facts, there could have been over 100,000 people in those Towers during the peak period of dining, tourism and business hours for cleaning staff and delivery workers.
Also,in order to assure the time of departure and a full load of fuel for maximum damage the hijackers picked a plane that was reserved for its first flight out in the morning(this is a overnight stay on the tarmac ) and would leave
on time since there would be no delays to screw up the mission.
The time of the second plane appears to have
a special mission of killing rescue worker
along with persons in the Tower, this style of killing has been perfected by Palestinians that
detonate two carbombs, one to slaughter the local
victims and the second placed where the people flee to from the first bomb and time it to
kill even more civilians.
Moore's 911 movie failed to show the people jumping from the towers only to explode on impact when they hit the cement at about 120 Mph during the free-fall.
Moore did have a good point about Bush letting
Muslims leave America after the attack,Moore feels they should have been rounded up and interned until they could prove they had nothing to do with the Muslim hijackers, and THEN they could leave.
Lucky for the Arabs and Muslims Moore wasn't President at the time and there was a Texan that believed you're innocent until prove guilty
and non-Citizens have the right to exit the Country under their time of choice.
Whilst I am sure it is of no comfort to famalies that lost people on 9/11, the fact is it is quite incredible more people did not die. Osama was expecting a much bigger death toll, and had an unusual set of circumstances not unfolded on that day the death toll could have easily been 10X what it was.
Dr. Groundaxe,
You may credit the lesser death toll to American bravery and Yankee ingenuity.
Osama who?
US, Australian, and NZ troops have had to bail Europe out of a mess twice. Canada did, but they have given themselves over to the Muslims.
Maybe it won't happen for a third time when Europe becomes Eurabia. I for one wouldn't want to risk my neck, nor see my family members do the same, thanks to European "stupidness".
Let them stew. Those Euro's who disagree can migrate to the land of the free.
3rd time lucky
And what if Islamic Europe decides to wage war against Australia and America.
We have no choice but to bail them out.
Good work, Houser!
I wonder if such reports are distributed in Europe.
Houser's final paragraph has a nice ironic touch.
As the terrorism expert in Brussels explains to Houser that the problem of the Islamicization of Europe is not as bad as it may seem, suddenly the caterwauling noise of a Muslim muezzin erupts through his office's open window.
One of the most obnoxious noises on Earth.
(Something like a cross between a ram being castrated and a live baby rabbit being eaten by a feral cat.)
Europe cannot count on the rest of the world to save its ass again.
I say let them fight for their own lives this time.
It'll teach them that you do not invite those who despise you into your land, feed them, house them, provide free schooling and health care, and expect anything more than a healthier and more cunning killer of your culture to result .
Fools. Cowards.
(America has done the same on a smaller scale, but its people are better armed, just in case...)
Good idea to make all Muslims in USA pay an extra tax to pay for Technology for Training Against Terroras it has been proven beyond doubt that it is their peaceful brothers who have made this extra cost to taxpayer necessary
Emergency responders face an enormous challenge in having to prepare for many large scale, unfamiliar terrorist threats.
According to a 2002 FAS report, the United States must train:
1.7 million full-time and volunteer firefighters,
2.7 million nurses,
620,000 civilian law enforcement officials,
150,000 emergency medical technicians,
32,000 emergency physicians,
50,000 Army medics,
plus millions of other medical personnel and local officials of different backgrounds.
The national need cannot be met anytime soon without vastly improved training methods and tools.
The Federation of American Scientists’ (FAS) Learning Federation (LF) project focuses on research and development of Technology-Enabled Learning Systems (TELS) that can make learning more engaging, effective and accessible. Our Learning Science and Technology R&D Roadmap lays out benchmarks for how education technology can revolutionize how Americans teach and learn within a decade.
First responders, military medics and others can learn faster and better with TELS. Here we present some results of Learning Federation work in this dynamic field.
