While European negotiators focus on Iran's development of enriched plutonium, U.S. intelligence officials say Tehran already has completed all of the elements required for an atomic bomb.The news has stunned President Bush, according to Geostrategy Direct, an intelligence news service led by national security reporter Bill Gertz of the Washington Times.
"It's an incredible piece of intelligence that overshadows everything we thought we knew on Iran's nuclear program," one U.S. intelligence source said.
Geostrategy says the intelligence information asserts North Korea this year transferred components to Iran to assemble a plutonium-based nuclear warhead.
The components were believed to have originated in Pakistan.
Iran insists its nuclear program is only for generation of electricity. But Washington contends Tehran's intentions are not peaceful, pointing to an enrichment program hidden from U.N. inspectors for nearly two decades before it was officially declared in October 2003.
The CIA has been tracking for the past two years Iran's efforts to enrich uranium for a nuclear weapon, Geostrategy reports.
All of the agency's assessments were based on how much technology and enriched uranium Iran had obtained for its first nuclear warhead.
While dismayed by Iran's efforts, the CIA believed Iran needed at least another three years before it could assemble an atomic bomb.
"Instead, the entire Iranian uranium enrichment effort appears to have concealed a much more immediate aim," Geostrategy says.
Meanwhile, the head of the U.N. atomic watchdog, Mohamed ElBaradei, praised Iran for its decision Wednesday to continue suspension of its enrichment program and to continue talks with the EU-3 -- France, German and Britain.
In exchange, the Europeans will present plans for economic and political incentives that will become part of a final deal.
Also, the World Trade Organization rewarded Tehran for its decision by opening membership negotiations...
In late 2004, says Geostrategy, the Iranian Revolutionary Guard Corps tested a command and control network that would permit a nuclear weapons warhead to be placed on an enhanced Shihab-3 intermediate-range missile.
The CIA believes Iran could immediately assemble several nuclear warheads for the Shihab-3 arsenal.
"This means that U.S. forces in Iraq and southern Europe are under immediate Iranian threat," Geostrategy says. "Israel and Saudi Arabia are already under Iranian nuclear threat."
The CIA first obtained reports in 1994 of Iran obtaining plutonium components from North Korea.
The latest information, however, comes from a new and far more reliable source, Geostrategy says...

I believe Geostrategy is known for making similar statements, but no substantiating evidence is released. And it just dies away, a rumor with no proof. Maybe they do, maybe they don't, but eventually they will. The US really can't stop them without starting another war and we are fighting on plenty of fronts now. BEIJING - More than 1,000 migratory birds have been found dead from the H5N1 strain of avian flu in China, far higher than previously acknowledged, Chinese officials said on Friday.
“Up to May 26 a total of over 1,000 birds have been found dead,” Jia Youling, director of the Ministry of Agriculture’s veterinary bureau, said at a press conference.
China had previously admitted only 178 birds died from an outbreak of bird flu at a nature reserve in the western province of Qinghai.
The dead birds include wild geese, gulls and cormorants.

UN weapons experts have found 20 engines used in Iraq's banned Al Samoud 2 missiles in a Jordanian scrap yard, along with other equipment that could be used to produce weapons of mass destruction.
Acting chief UN inspector Demetrius Perricos disclosed the discovery today in a closed-door briefing to the UN Security Council.
According to the text of his presentation, Perricos said a similar missile engine had been found in a scrap yard in the Dutch port of Rotterdam, while a request had been made to Turkey, which has also received scrap metal from Iraq. The discoveries raise questions about the fate of material and equipment that could be used to produce biological and chemical weapons as well as banned long-range missiles.
Perricos said UN inspectors do not how much material has been removed from Iraq since the war began in March 2003, and suggested the interim government may want to reconsider "the whole policy for the continued export of metal scrap" once it assumes power on June 30.
"The only controls at the borders are for the weight of the scrap metal, and to check whether there are any explosive or radioactive materials within the scrap," he said, according to the text of his briefing.
Afterwards, he told reporters that up to a thousand tons of scrap metal was leaving Iraq every day.
Perricos told the council that UN experts visited "relevant scrap yards" in Jordan and discovered 20 SA-2 missile engines, which are used in Al Samoud 2 missiles. His report did not specify the condition of the engines, or whether they were damaged.
The UN team also discovered some processing equipment with UN tags - which show it was being monitored - including chemical reactors, heat exchangers, and a solid propellant mixer bowl to make missile fuel, he said. It also discovered "a large number of other processing equipment without tags, in very good condition." The UN inspectors in Jordan were told that "brand new material like stainless steel and special alloy sheets" was being sent out of Iraq, he said. At today's closed council meeting, UN diplomats said many members expressed concern about items missile engines and other material that had been monitored by UN inspectors ending up in foreign scrap yards including Algeria, Brazil, Germany, France, Chile, Spain, Russia and China.

VIENNA - Iran secretly restarted activities that would help it enrich uranium, sparking further concerns among the international community that it intends to build nuclear weapons, diplomats said on Wednesday.

“Freedom, democracy and stupidities of this type cannot be carried over to any part, and these concepts are out of sync with the principles of Islam,” said Hasani, the imam who led Friday prayers in the main city of western Iranian Azerbaijian.

As long as we depend upon intelligence agencies to 'defend' America, we will find ourselves surprised at enemy developments. This approach to defense is naive; it forfeits initiative to the enemy because intelligence, by definition, is reactive. Intelligence observes and reports upon what it has observed ... to politicians. It is all about the past.
The way for America to win this war is through a very aggressive, pro-active, offensive strategy - carried out by our armed forces. Such a strategy will require the destruction of our enemies, not their appeasement. I was very upset when I heard President Bush recently announce that he was pleased that Putin was helping Iran with its enrichment program because he said that Putin was doing it to ensure that Iran does not go nuclear -- or some such nonsense. How foolish can he be?
The only hope I see is an internal overthrow of the mullahcracy in Iran, and I have heard that there will be major democracy demonstrations there shortly. The mullahs have just removed all the names of candidates except their own. Gee -- Putin must yearn for those old days, just like in his father's USSR. Only one slate -- but everybody votes.
This is another failure of the Bush administration and their intelligence and covert services, I believe, that they have not exploited and aided these democracy forces and worked for an inside out revolution and transfer of this dangerous technology to democratic hands.

i want to do something symbolic to vent my frustration and the only thing i can think of is to go to my favorite bookstore, buy a quran and burn it then leave it on the doorstep of one of the nearest mosques which is controlled by a bonafide wahhabi straight our of saudi arabia. this i know for sure. i probably wont leave it on the doorstep though but i still can burn it.
About three years ago, I remember Condoleeza Rice saying that North Korean would sell nuclear technology to terrorists if given the opportunity. Wisam Younis' sole ambition in life, he said Friday, is to kill Americans. So he claimed surprise when he discovered his car bomb had killed eight Iraqis and wounded more than 80 outside a Baghdad restaurant.
"We did not know that the attack would target innocent people and we were deceived," said Younis, barefooted and with bruised and swollen hands. He said they were taken in by enthusiastic ideas and money, adding that an insurgent leader promised $1,500 for the bombing.
The statement, which could not be authenticated, apparently refers to Jabr and al-Duleimi as the "two unbeliever apostates, followers of the worshippers of the cross, (who) have announced they are deploying 40,000 cowards and apostates in Baghdad."
There were stories in the mainstream press about Iranian acquisition of several types of warheads from Kazhakhstan in 1992. We know Iran received nuclear cruise missiles (allegedly witout warheads) from Ukraine.
Now North Korea, having transferred all its missile technology to Iran, forming the basis for the Shahab series of missiles (based on North Korean no dong and taepo dong missiles), is alleged to have transferred even more nuclear technology.
One "Axis of Evil" member arming another? Sounds probable given the past missile dealings between Teheran and Pyongyang.
I guess we'll find out eventually one way or another.

WatchfulEye has the right idea, especially point number 3. This is something that we can all do in our daily lives. Just stick to the facts and let your audience decide what conclusions to draw from them. Memorize lists of myths, like the top ten myths of Islamic tolerance or the top ten myths of women's rights in Islam, etc. Develop an "elevator pitch". Imagine you step onto an elevator and you unexpectedly find yourself standing face to face with the President of the United States. You have two minutes to make your point before the door opens again.

CGW, as a political observer developing an interest in the Middle East, I can say as an independent (on this issue), that utterly, completely and without any shadow of doubt whatsoever, that if Israel was nuked, Mecca would absolutely be obliterated. I would absolutely guarantee it. Actually, I would bet on Medina also; a sure thing.

There is a Koranic verse to fit every possibility, even for Allah 'allowing' the vaporization of the 'holy of holies' of Islam. (Maybe Sura 40:81 from "THE BELIEVER"?)
Of course it would be 'permitted' as an object lesson to teach the Muslims an important 'truth' about Allah's inscrutability and unpredictability.
In laymen's terms:
