TEHRAN, Iran – Iran confirmed for the first time Monday that it converted 37 tons of raw uranium into gas, a key step ahead of enrichment, before it suspended all such activities in November under international pressure.The confirmation means Tehran is in a position to quickly start enriching uranium if it chose to end its suspension of enrichment-related activities. It comes at a crucial time, with Europe trying in fragile negotiations to seal an agreement to ensure that Iran's nuclear program does not produce weapons.
The Europeans agreed last year that Iran could finish converting the 37 tons. Iran had begun processing the material in a rushed attempt to do it just before the suspension.
Mohammad Saeedi, deputy head of the Atomic Energy Organization of Iran, told The Associated Press that Iran had processed the uranium into UF-4 gas. If processed further into UF-6, the material could be fed into centrifuges and enriched, allowing it to be used either to produce electricity or make nuclear weapons.
"We converted all the 37 tons of uranium concentrate known as yellowcake into UF-4 at the Isfahan Uranium Conversion Facility before we suspended work there," Saeedi said.
Nuclear experts say that when fully processed, the 37 tons of yellowcake can theoretically yield more than 200 pounds of weapons-grade uranium, enough to make five crude nuclear weapons.

There are 70 million Iranians which makes for a large pool of talent to draw from. Unlike the Arabs, Iranians are capable of organized coherent science. They are culturally suited for it and many Persians are from same genetic stock as the Hindus. So they have the smarts to set up a nuclear bomb making program. They had a lot of technical help from the outside. Blueprints too. But I think they're smart enough to do it on their own by now.
For what it's worth, converting UF-4 to UF-6 (uranium hexaflouride) is a deadly and tricky business. They screw this up and it could kill them. About 31 people were killed at Los Alamos in 1945 during this process. By the way; I won't shed any tears for them if they do screw it up.

I can only speak for what America has struggled to stand for and that is freedom, freedom to practice whatever religion you belong to. You can go to any large city in America and find Islamic Mosques,Buddhist Temples, Jewish Syagogues, Mormon Temples, Catholic Churches, Baptist,Protestant, and Methodist Churches and many more all over and even next to each other. People go to, and attend services never having to give a thought to refecting any thoughts of antismitism in these places of worship as they go and pray to God, Allah, or Buddha in their own way. This is what America is all about, respecting the rights of others to belong to any religion of their choice without any threat of persecution. You have the right to be an atheist if you so choose as well. But we are Americans first and we have to respect the laws of America. The US Constitution calls for a respect of religion and that the government cannot make any laws against its practice. America gives equal rights to both men and women without discrimination and this is why America has become so successful over its 230 years of its form of Goverment and Constitutional history. Freedom and the right of free expression without suppression is an innate desire in people from all over the free and democratic world. It is a land void of dictators, and despots because a democracy is a government controlled by the people and for the people and It is this simple human desire that draws people to come to America from all parts of this ever shrinking planet. People risk their lives everyday to come and taste the freedom that this country offers, and that in lies the strength of America.
