BAGHDAD, Iraq - A car bomb exploded in a jammed commercial district Thursday, devastating the area and turning the sky gray as shops and restaurants caught fire in the most deadly of a string of attacks that killed 21 and included the assassinations of a general and a colonel on their way to work.Iraqis expressed growing fury at the relentless bloodshed, throwing stones at police and U.S. forces who came to the scene of the bombing. More than 90 were also wounded in Thursday's violence.
Sounds more like they're expressing fury at American soldiers and their "collaborators," the Iraqi police, to me.
The attacks came as U.S. troops were in the midst of a major offensive near the Syrian border, 200 miles northwest of Baghdad. Fierce clashes were reported with insurgents on the outskirts of the town of Qaim, where angry residents lashed out at U.S. forces."They destroyed our city, killed our children, destroyed our houses. We have nothing left," one man in Qaim told Associated Press Television News. He did not give his name and hid his face with a scarf to address the camera.

Five more American troops died in Iraq, two during the offensive Wednesday and three others when their convoys hit roadside bombs Thursday in Baghdad and surrounding areas, the U.S. military announced. At least 1,611 members of the U.S. military have died since the beginning of the Iraq war in March 2003, according to an Associated Press count.More than 420 people have died in the two weeks since Iraq's first democratically elected government was announced.
At the Pentagon, Gen. Richard Myers, chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, indicated Thursday that the insurgency could last for many more years.
"This requires patience," he said at a news conference. "This is a thinking and adapting adversary ... I wouldn't look for results tomorrow. One thing we know about insurgencies, that they last from three, four years to nine years."...
Except for this little jihad insurgency that has already lasted for more than 1350 years and counting...

that the U.S. military's thinking level is piss poor.

I spoke with a Professor of Theology that use to be a muslim. A question I had for him is "why are these people so willing to die for their religion"?
He broke it down easily. In many Western religions you get to heaven by accepting God, being born again or by being good.
In Islam you are to claim you are muslim, claim allah is god, and be good to muslims (you don't have to be good to non-believers). But there is a acception: if you are bad and have always done bad then you may still go to heaven, by claiming Jihad and when dying take out infidels. This advances you to heaven and cleans the slate. Of course there is the definition of "Bad", if a muslim rapes, murders, commits crimes, etc. against non-believers this does not qualify as "bad", this is "ok".
So, you can live wrong, rape, murder, conduct crimes and on your dying bed, claim allah and take a infidel with you and this is to make it all right.
The Professor said this is why where ever muslim immigrants have concentrated in the West they have the worst crime rates. But the West will not report or break down crimes based on immigrants or religions. This would be racist, even though islam is not a race.
The Professor also said this is one of the greatest ares that is advancing islam in the West. People that have low esteem, criminal life long careers, bad people, can join up and still believe they can go to heaven. So it has a element of being able to recruit basically un-moral people, that allows them to remain un-moral.
Now I now not every muslim is a bad person (according to you), then it is only a matter of believing in a false god.
Whilst all deaths are of course to be deplored (except those of Israeli Jews), according to the reigning politically correctness, I cannot in good conscience say that I do not deplore more the deaths of US military personnel than those of Muslims at the hands of their jihadist brothers.

The only thing worthwhile in Iraq is the oil. As long as our energy needs (and the interests of the power elite in the United States) hinge on this commodity, we cannot leave Iraq to stew in its own self-inflicted misery (Islam in all its forms). The only positive aspect of US actions in Iraq is the honing of its military effectiveness in combating the jihadist brotherhood. The lessons learnt in Afghanistan and Iraq will prove useful when facing the rest of the world that espouses the jihadist point of view.

This is to those congressmen still freaking out about not getting more advance warning about this errant plane over Washington on Wednesday: Shut up.
While you were bitching, F-16 jets were flying over the Capitol (search) to protect you. Capitol Hill Police — paid a lot less than you — were busy trying to evacuate you. Ditto the White House (search).
You may not like what's going on, but some — and I stress some — of you didn't waste a nanosecond to trash the very folks trying to protect your sorry asses.
One congressman even had the gall to say personnel were rushed out of buildings for nothing. Hindsight's 20-20, Einstein.
But it's a familiar rant: No plan. No procedure. No exit strategy.
Now whose fault is that?
Is there an orderly way to evacuate people when you have only a few moments' notice that those peoples' lives are in danger?
Maybe there is, look into it.
Fortunately your respective leaders, Senators Bill Frist (search) and Harry Reid (search), were kind enough to commend the D.C. police. I wish I could say the same of all of you.
I caught a couple of Democratic senators on our air, including New Jersey's Frank Lautenberg bemoaning no coordinated action. Still another congressman blasted the lack of protocol.
I'm here to blast the lack of something else: class.
Maybe you're right. But you're a senator. You're a congressman. Your body houses a brain — I think. Use it and quit shifting blame. Because the shift has hit the fan and some of you are sounding like whining, self-absorbed losers, who'd sooner blame others for not doing what you should have been doing all along.
To me, you sounded more concerned that you had to exit with the minions, than the fact that you and the minions survived.

Radioactive Missiles Found In Iraq

U.S. Army troops operating at a former Iraqi air base recently made a startling discovery: Russian made missiles marked with radioactive warning signs.
Army bomb disposal troops confirmed using Geiger counters that the missiles are indeed radioactive.
The discovery is not, however, considered the long sought after "smoking gun" of Iraqi weapons of mass destruction.
The missiles appear to be part of a cache of weapons supplied to Iraq before the 1991 Gulf war.
The Russian made R-60, NATO code name AA-8 Aphid, air-to-air missiles are part of a huge stockpile of former Iraqi Air Force munitions uncovered in over a dozen concrete bunkers.
The Russian made missiles are over 6 feet long and each carries 1.6 kilograms or about 3.5 pounds of radioactive uranium wrapped around a high explosive warhead.
The uranium is not pure enough nor in large enough quantity to be a nuclear warhead but it is dangerous enough, as you can see from the label:

Confessions of Al-Qaida Suspects Who Allegedly Planned Attacks Aired

AMMAN, Jordan - Al-Qaida plotted bomb and poison gas attacks against the U.S. Embassy and other targets in Jordan, suspects confessed in a videotape that aired Monday on Jordanian state television. A commentator said the plotters hoped to kill 80,000 people.
One of the alleged conspirators, Azmi al-Jayousi, said he was acting on the orders of Abu-Musab al-Zarqawi, a Jordanian wanted by the United States for allegedly organizing terrorists to fight U.S. troops in Iraq on behalf of al-Qaida. U.S. officials have offered a $10 million reward for his capture.
Al-Jayousi, identified as the head of a Jordanian terror cell, said he met al-Zarqawi in neighboring Iraq to plan the attacks.
The 20-minute taped program contained what were described as confessions by the suspects, who were arrested a month ago. Officials said four terror suspects believed linked to the conspiracy died in a shootout with police in Amman last week.

A major achievement: US removes 1.7 metric tons of radioactive material from Iraq

The material was taken from a former nuclear research facility on 23 June, after being packaged by 20 experts from the US Energy Department's secret laboratories.

The New York Times buries the story on page 11 (something about weddings in Massachusetts led the front page, bizarrely enough), and it's shot through with pro-Saddam spin:
The discovery of the sarin-filled shell appears to offer some of the most substantial evidence to date that Mr. Hussein did not destroy all of the banned chemical agent, as he claimed before the war last year. BAGHDAD, Iraq (AP) - A roadside bomb containing sarin nerve agent exploded near a U.S. military convoy, the U.S. military said Monday. Two people were treated for ``minor exposure,'' but no serious injuries were reported.
``The Iraqi Survey Group confirmed today that a 155-millimeter artillery round containing sarin nerve agent had been found,'' said Brig. Gen. Mark Kimmitt, the chief military spokesman in Iraq. ``The round had been rigged as an IED (improvised explosive device) which was discovered by a U.S. force convoy.
``A detonation occurred before the IED could be rendered inoperable. This produced a very small dispersal of agent,'' he said.
The Iraqi Survey Group is a U.S. organization whose task was to search for weapons of mass destruction after the ouster of Saddam Hussein in last year's invasion.

The United Nations has determined that Saddam Hussein shipped weapons of mass destruction components as well as medium-range ballistic missiles before, during and after the U.S.-led war against Iraq in 2003.

Polish Troops Find Sarin Warheads in Iraq

WARSAW, Poland (AP) - Polish troops have found two warheads in Iraq believed to contain a deadly nerve agent, but it is not clear what period the weapons came from, the Defense Ministry said Thursday.
The two warheads were found in early June in a bunker in the area controlled by Polish forces, and they tested positive for cyclosarin, a substance many times stronger than sarin, the ministry said in a statement.
